  1. Someone mentioned "hair on the heart", which is apparently a saying of some sort that she'd never heard (nor have I). She took the comment to really mean that hair could grow on your heart (which would be some kind of negative medical condition) at the time, and apparently the person who mentioned it to her didn't correct her as to what it really meant. She only found out later that it was a saying and not a real thing. As a result, she's angry at the individual and is going to get back at them in some way.
  2. Bubblegum Crisis 2032 is a classic. But it's an older classic from the days before computer generated animation, so you may be excused for not recognizing the name. No comment on the parallel universe Bubblegum Crisis 2040 series... I thought it was episode 7? Wasn't episode 6 Double Vision? (i.e. the one with the singer who would have been Priss's replacement character?)
  3. Since it's inactive and sitting in a very deep hole in very rough terrain (i.e. all of the weird rock formations around its resting site), it's possible that even scans of the area might have missed the wreckage. The composition of the rocks in the area, coupled with the unusual shapes that they have, might have acted to interfere with any scans of the area that might have revealed the wreck. Or it's possible that the entire thing is in their heads. Something happens in Ranka's mind which causes her to go looking in that direction, and we don't know exactly what it was (I referred to it as a call earlier). It's possible that the entire thing is an illusion, although based on the previews of next episode (which show an intact SDF-class ship) I don't think that's likely.
  4. It might be. It's been a while since the episode 7 battle, so it's possible that the LAI scientists have managed to use Luca's scan data to come up with the new booster. My theory was that they got it off of the VF-27 blueprints that Leon received. But reverse engineering it from Luca's scan data is also a possibility.
  5. I get quite the opposite vibe. In episode 2 she's after him because he ended up with her earring during the performance. In episode 3 when she realizes that she didn't ask him about the earring (after they've all been freed from the shelter and have gone their seperate ways), she's actually quite annoyed that she's going to have to go talk to him again.
  6. Maybe, maybe not. But based on the advisor's comments, I think everyone's just excited. Even the Zentran on the base have heard about Ranka. Her appearence in Bird Human is apparently sending out shockwaves even beyond Frontier. So it's combination of... 1.) She's the new and exciting thing that everyone wants to see 2.) It's her very first live concert, so there's additional excitement 3.) Everyone's caught up in her Cinderella story of going from literally a nobody to galaxy-wide fame virtually overnight. In real life, point #1 tends to get people caught up in the excitement a lot more often than it should. And the rest of it is then able to build on that. There's even one Zentraedi that gets a nosebleed and then faints a split second later. It's also possible that the rank-and-file Zentraedi troops in the unit haven't really integrated into human society. In SDF Macross, we see the regular troops basically throwing temper tantrums when fleet morale finally starts to break down due to the influence of Earth culture. It's possible that the rank and file troops in the 33rd Marine Corps aren't much brighter than their compatriots fifty years prior.
  7. While the idea is amusing, keep in mind that Sheryl started encouraging Ranka in episode 3. At that point, as far as Sheryl was concerned Alto was just the jerk who'd seen her topless. It wasn't until episode 5 (after the Miss Macross contest was over) that Sheryl started to become friends with Alto. So Sheryl's encouragement of Ranka's singing career started before Sheryl became interested in Alto.
  8. I'm guessing that Brera reached the planet before Sheryl and Alto did, and was supposed to use the fighting as a distraction so that he could do his own poking around. Yeah, I understood that. It's just that it had to hurt. A LOT. As far as waiting until the next "Sheryl-on-top episode" goes, based on the one-line plot summaries released so far, Justice for who? Alto's the one that blew Ranka off without even a phonecall. Sheryl's been pretty nice to Ranka so far and hasn't got a thing to show for it except a new rival. Meanwhile, Ranka keeps trying to figure out how to catch Alto even though she's convinced that there's a relationship between Alto and Sheryl (there isn't, but Ranka seems to think there is).
  9. I'm sure she would have given her blessing. But that doesn't change the fact that... 1.) She enjoys flying with Alto (as seen in episode 2.) She's the one that arranged things so that Alto could realize his dream of flying in a sky with no dome But instead of getting to enjoy the fruits of her labor, she's so sick that she's unable to stand without using something to support herself. She goes to the trouble to set things up so that she can spend some time with Alto, and instead she's forced to cede it to Ranka due to the fighting and her illness. Class act or no, she's probably feeling just a bit miserable and put upon at the moment. Hopefully she'll recover enough that she'll get her own flight with Alto before they leave.
  10. The Kamjin clone doesn't. He's got more of a purplish skin, iirc. Presumeably it's just the clone stock used for the individual Zentraedi in that group. Also, the discussion in episode 11 between Cathy and Klan Klan indicated that this was a Zentraedi unit that had been at least somewhat unwilling to give up their bad old ways.
  11. Bah! People blame Alto for the VF he lost in episode 7, but fail to mention that if he hadn't lost that VF then Luca's would have been lost instead. Don't be hatin'! And from the look of things at the end of this episode, his VF was in amazing condition after his rather bumpy crash landing. There was no visible damage to the plane other than the dirt that he picked up as he played pattycake with the ground. Apparently that armor on the VF-25 works REAL good. A modern plane that performed that kind of landing would have left pieces all over the landscape. Even his wings were still intact. There's one thing that I realized somewhat belatedly and that I haven't seen mentioned (probably because everyone got sidetracked by the Macross wreckage)... Something appears to have mentally called Ranka, apparently from the wreckage. It wasn't a coincidence that she just happened to get out of the plane and make her way to the cliff while Alto was still evaluating the plane to see if the fuselage had been seriously damaged. Edit: And one last item. His fold booster stayed in orbit as well and is visible when his jettisoned armor folds up. That makes a convenient way to allow the plane to fly in atmoshere without the drag from the booster and still retain the ability to fold out (presumeably it can be reequipped without a hanger).
  12. That's been more or less the way that it's worked from the start, though - or rather the end result has been the same. Remember that in SDF Macross, the Macross performs a space fold and drags along a good chunk of the city, a number of enemy units, and Hikaru's plane.
  13. I think Micheal's status as a "womanizer" was irrelevant to the whole thing. And yes, I'm in agreement that Alto should have at least called Ranka. I stated as much in my original response on this subject. But the fact of the matter is that the circumstances of Ranka's gift weren't particularly well thought out either. Ranka contacted Alto to ask him to come to her special spot so that she could give him a bag of cookies? It seems to me that there was more in it for Ranka than for Alto. A friend of mine pointed out that Sheryl's the one who's really thinking of Alto in this situation. She's the one who sets up something that Alto will enjoy, and then goes to Alto. Ranka's trying to be nice in this situation, but the fact that she summoned Alto to her special spot to give Alto her gift suggests that she's thinking just as much about herself as she is about Alto (not that she's consciously doing so). What she should have done is what Sheryl appears to have done (I'll know for certain once I've got a translation available) - i.e. tracked Alto down at a location that she knew he'd be at, and offered the gift there. That still doesn't let Alto off the hook for not calling her, of course.
  14. If so, then she's doing a REALLY good job of not showing it. Given her outfits in episode 11 alone (not counting the bikini in 10, etc...), there's no way that she could be hiding something like that.
  15. I think Micheal is scared of what Ozma would do to him if Ozma were to learn that Micheal was trying to score with Ozma's little sister. Did anyone catch what Ozma said to Cathy? It sounded as if he was ranting over something related to Ranka. Messing with Ranka is definitely not something I would want to do with Ozma around. ^^;; I think Alto's uneasy around both women. I think he sees Ranka more as a "little sister" type of relationship, which would make her evident intent to get closer to him uncomfortable. And I think he's still trying to figure Sheryl out. Complicating things with Sheryl is that both Alto and Sheryl are proud and self-reliant, and these aspects of their personalities get in the way of actually opening up to each other (which is a requirement if they're even going to figure out if they're suitable for each other). junior
  16. Does it? Do we have any indication that it wasn't merely one more thing on the list to push him in Sheryl's favor? And he's not actually in a relationship with either girl at this point. As rude as it may have been to skip out on Ranka (he probably should have at least called her beforehand to decline), this opportunity is something that he may not see again for a very long time. If I have the choice between a 'once a year' opportunity or to spend some time with people that I see frequently anyway... ... the friends are probably going to lose out. Spend time eating cookies with a friend he sees every day or go partake of something he's been dreaming of doing for a long time? There's simply no contest. And I wouldn't at all hold it against him for going flying instead. Now if he regularly skips out on his friends to go flying then there's an issue. But we haven't seen any indication of that yet.
  17. No, she's still working there as of episode 10. Though who knows if she's going to STAY there after that episode... It's one of those things... I think it might even be used as an abbreviation for Japan at certain international events. It's also an anti-semitic slur (in that particular case, it's an acronym), although that's not very well known these days. In short, I'd hesitate to jump on someone for using it now. But at the same time it's probably a good idea to avoid it.
  18. No need to apologize for your English. It's not bad. And without even trying, I can think of at least one frequent poster whose English is so bad that in comparison it makes you look like you had a college major in the language. Unfortunately, while the fufonfia videos have been linked here before, I don't think anyone has taken the time to provide information as to what is going on in them.
  19. There's no doubt that Max is the best pilot in the fleet. And as noted, Hikaru himself is pretty good (iirc, it's Hikaru that Khamjin is really referencing when he mentions a superior VF pilot to Milia). But squadron leader duty is a lot more than just being able to fly well. It's also the ability to properly lead and coordinate the pilots under your command. For instance, the abililty to keep track of Kakizaki and make sure that no matter how brashly he acts in combat, either Hikaru or Max is nearby to help him out if necessary. Max and Hikaru are good, but presumeably they're among the best of the best on board Macross (particularly Max, who is probably THE best). One wonders how many Kakizakis there are in the fleet who don't have a Max and Hikaru around to bail them out of trouble. I'd be willing to bet that they outnumber the Maxes and the Hikarus by a nice margin. And so the lack of casualties in Vermillion is almost certainly a fluke. And imo that's born out by the occasional bridge comment that mentions losses among the other teams flying off of Macross.
  20. iirc, there are at least a couple of episodes in which the bridge crew mention teams having taken heavy losses or being wiped out in the fighting. So I'd guess that Vermillion team's record of zero casualties to enemy fire is a very noteworthy exception (even Kakizaki wasn't killed by enemy action). It would also be unusual for someone like Hikaru to be promoted to replace his squadron commander so soon. Given that he didn't join up until after the Macross left Earth, every pilot present in episode 1 would have more seniority than him. Part of the explanation is no doubt that Hikaru is an excellent pilot and leader (which gets you bumped up over a lot of other pilots), and is acknowledged as such by most of the other members of Skull Squadron (and that once again points to the idea that Vermillion team does better than most of the other teams). But there would also need to have been a lot of casualties among the experienced pilots in order for Hikaru to be picked as the replacement for Focker. It's highly unlikely that Hikaru would outperform everyone else in Skull Squadron to such a degree that he'd get bumped to the top of the list as Focker's replacement - unless many of the other vets had been killed in the fighting.
  21. Actually, I think they're under contract specifically to President Glass. Hence the dialogue in episode 7 between Cathy and the Quarter's Captain about the order coming directly from the President. As President Glass should in theory be the head of the NUNS (that's the way that it works in most countries, including the US), the difference is a subtle one. But it may be imoprtant later on. Remember that Frontier is currently in a State of Emergency. It was the attack on the Galaxy fleet that triggered the State of Emergency, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the end of that status will involve Galaxy. In particular, the operation to rescue the Kaitos and Dulfim wasn't the reason for the SoE. Instead, it's the overall status of things with regard to the Vajra and Galaxy. She's also mentioned her brother before during one of her panic attacks. Admittedly, I believe the previous time was during episode 3 when she found out that Ozma had been wounded. Yeah. I included the original Japanese text in my post over in the News thread in hopes that someone would do a better job of translating it than Babelfish did (and Super Ostrich has kindly done so). Two semesters of college Japanese probably wouldn't have let me translate that even if I hadn't forgotten most of what I'd learned by now...
  22. Given that we know that he's from the Galaxy fleet, I think people would have been more bothered if he HADN'T been completely borged out. What's the point of playing up implants on Galaxy if the writers aren't going to show it off a time or two? I suspect that the hook for Brera's character isn't going to be his cyborg body, but rather his apparent connection to Ranka. The implants add a little color to his character, but ultimately I would imagine that Brera's harmonica will be far and away more important to the overall plot than what he's got under his skin. Any number of possible reasons. It's possible that she was involved in something related to the film at the other end of the island. Mao in particular spends a lot of time in Macross Zero outside of the beach village, and there might have been an on set rehearsal for a scene at, say, the spring.
  23. What I got out of Babelfishing the summary on the official episode 11 page If it's Grace (and I'm still in the "wait and see" camp), then my guess is that the request was to have a replacement earring crafted for Sheryl. No, he didn't. You can see it long during the film screening segment at the end after Ranka gets the standing ovation. During Scene 47 he had it bound up and tucked behind his head. If you look carefully when he talks briefly with Ranka right before they dive, you can see it. I think Nanase has that view of what Ranka can accomplish (though for Nanase, Ranka grabbing Alto would probably be the secondary, albeit only slightly less important, goal). But I think for Ranka the two goals are completely independent of each other. I think starting next episode, though, Ranka's going to learn that chasing one goal is going to make it a lot harder to chase the other.
  24. I think the key word there is "basic". I'm not saying that Alto can't use it. Rather, I suspect that his useage of it would be rather clumsy in comparison with Ozma's.
