  1. Better still, they've announced the GM Command and Alex NT-1 for the HGUC lineup. All that's left is the Kampfer and Zaku FZ.

No, we still need the space-use GM Command, and the GM Sniper II, in addition to the Zaku II FZ and Kampfer.

The Gelgoog Marine isn't too drastically retconned from that version, is it?

Yes, it is, and in the same style and relation that the 08th Team Zaku II has with the MSG Zaku II.

Where's my bloody HG plain vanilla Gelgoog?

The same place your bloody HG plain vanilla Dom is at.

Just mod the thing if you're that dead set against buying a Master Grade.

  2. Hang on a minute:

Nobel - Has large hair in the back

GP03S - Has boosters / wings on the back

GM Type C and Zaku F2 - Don't have a back heavy designs, because they are simply revisions of other designer's works

    Tallgeese - Large back boosters

Deathscythe - large back-moun ted wings / active cloak

Sandrock - carries a pair of large swords on its back

Taurus, Virgo, etc - all have very large shoulders

V - true, lacks a back heavy design

    V2 - wings

... Your criteria for "back heavy" is very, VERY open-ended. Basically, anything with something on its back qualifies as back heavy, according to that list. You also cite design rather than weight. GP03S, for example, is a space use-only suit. It weighs nothing. Therefore the concept of back heaviness does not apply.

I cited Deathscythe ver. Ka, NOT Deathscythe Hell Custom. DSHC, as well as the other "Customs" in Endless Waltz (minus Wing Gundam Zero Custom) are all Ishigaki refines of Katoki redesigns. If you're getting your designer credits from MAHQ, well, don't. DSHC isn't even very back-heavy; its wings extend to the side, with the option of folding around the body. This is in contrast to the Master Gundam, whose cloak collapses into two wing-like structures.

What the heck do shoulders have to do with back heaviness? You're stuffing Taurus and Virgo in the list... why?

As for V2... its "wings" are two thin beam structures (therefore weightless) generated by extensions jutting out from the chest and back. There is no weight here, thus there is no back heaviness.

Still, they still have prominent back-mounted features. That's all I'm trying to say.

Only a few of Katoki's designs have such prominent back features. If you want to really examine the designs here, you'll notice that Katoki puts the most noticable features into the legs and shoulders of his works, with heads following closely.

If you want to complain about back-weighted designs, load up a photo of a VF-1S with FAST packs attached, or any number of ZZ Gundam designs.

  3. yea you got that right about back heavy the EX-S is the worst , as you all probally know by now it needs the display stand , there is no way in hell that one is going to stand up on its own, the Wing Zero looks pretty back heavy but stands no problem really probally because the sheild and gun even it out in the front.

Ex-S is back heavy because those are capital ship-grade boosters attached to it's back. The design is meant to get in, disrupt enemy lines, and get out. That's why it has fuel pods attached to its shoulders in Ex-S mode.

Also, Gundam Sentinel takes place entirely in space. Therefore, weight has no bearing on the design of the space use-only Ex-S Gundam. Calling it back heavy has no meaning, unless you have something against logical design.

I'd say that's less of a new thing than a Katoki thing. Think about the other designs he's done, for example, the stuff from sentinel, or Master Gundam from G, or any number of others. They often have big backpacks or wings.

Well, let's think about that. Master Gundam, Ex-S Gundam, S-Booster Gundam, Wing Gundam Zero Custom, Wing Gundam ver. Ka... versus Nobel Gundam, Temjin, GP03S, GM Type C, Zaku II F2, Tallgeese, Deathscythe ver. Ka, Sandrock ver. Ka, Devil Gundam, Taurus, Virgo, Mercurius, V Gundam, V2 Gundam... the list goes on.

Most of Katoki's designs aren't back heavy. It's the back heavy ones that people happen to find most notable--which says something in and of itself.

  4. Just so no one gets their hopes up; the show in question is also a 5 minute short, just like the SEED prologue thingy that just came out with the DVDs.

Nothing to see here, nothing to be excited about. That animation quality looks TERRIBLE. And where's my Blue Frame Astray?

    Moving along...

  5. PS: what i particularly like about that shot, is you get to see what the frame around the engine looks like, in case anyone would ever want to do a maintinence diorama...

There are other angles and shots that accomplish far more than the last screencap. Eps 1 and 2 both show the engines without any armor on, and from a side view no less.

Edit: Now that we've solved this little problem... where'd wm_cheng go?

  6. Got them to work by cutting and pasting the URL.

As was said, shot 1 is the turbine/burner-ring. Wrong end of the engine. But Hase got it right!

Shot 2--shows the blades, but can't see the spinner at all.

Spinner: the pointy-rounded part in the middle of the fan, all the blades are arranged around it.

So I still don't have a pic of the 1st stage fan's spinner, which is the only part I'm concerned about. The only reason I brought it up is because it just looks so 60's-ish to me. Either Hase guessed, or Kawamori made a rather unusual choice for a modern spinner design.

Of course--a head-on view (which is what 99% of engine shots will be) won't help much, since you can't see anything but a circle. I really need like a cutaway, or a schematic of just the engine itself. (The best way to see spinners is to stick your head up the intake yourself--which I do whenever I can, but that won't work in this case) :)

Well, I said you need to copy/paste the URL. Told you it would work!

Alright, the spinner... screencap grabbed. This is from episode 2. You can see the spinner on the left side, just over some mechanic's shoulder. It's a side view, and it's the VF-0D's, but it's good enough.

  7. The minute Misa learns how to pilot a Q-Rau, I'm sure she'll get the recognition she deserves.

I'd rather see her in that red bathing suit standing on top of, or next to, a VF-0D. Give her the white high heels, too.

Who needs odd Zentradi mecha when you've got the most gorgeous plane ever designed?

  8. There's 3 drawings of Misa on the first page. None from Joseph though, I would love to see his rendition...

This is a great thread, totally forgot about it. I thought it was all Joseph's stuff but it's a lot of different artists.

    Let's see some more!!!

3 on the first page... and how many Millias on the other 7 pages? :p

I hope Joseph finds the idea interesting enough to draw.

  9. I'm getting "page unavailable".

Also, I said the fan SPINNER looked funny, not the fan blades.

Did you copy/paste the URLs into your address bar? They just loaded for me.

Either way, the screencaps are relevant; I'm not knowledgable in aircraft terminology and history, so I'm just guesstimating the name of the section in question.

  10. Huh.  That is an *old-school* fan spinner.  Looks like it's from the 60's.  (Hey, I've stuck my head up many an intake).  Wonder if that actually follows Kawamori's intentions/design, or is Hasegawa just guessing/swiping F-4 parts?

Military jet blades haven't changed appearance much over the years, it's really only evident in airliners.  Ever seen a GE90-115B's blades?  "Wicked" is the only way to describe them.

Well, let's solve this problem with a couple of screencaps. To view these, copy/paste the URLs into your address bar.

    Capture 1

That's the VF-0S' fan as captured from episode 1 of Mac Zero. At least, that's the scene that Stamen0083 was referring to. Now...

    Capture 2

This is a capture from Mac Zero ep 2. Raizo is yelling at Shin for his handling of his VF-0D during the training sequence. It's not really specified for sure, but I believe the fan blades behind him are the VF-0D's. This is for another person to answer, but given that they're both VF-0 series planes, I'm sure they'd use the same fan blades, even though the VF-0D isn't quite as fast or as good a performer as the VF-0S.

So, unless wm_cheng wants to scratchbuild the stuff seen in the first screencap, then the blades Hasegawa included are correct enough.
