I'm not going to say I really liked it, but like you I went in with low expectations, and I honestly "enjoyed" it.  I'll have to see it at least once more, I'm pretty sure it crumbles under any scrutiny just like the others of the sequel trilogy, but I didn't leave the theater thinking I didn't want to see it again like I did with The Last Jedi.  My general impression after a rewatch this week culminating in The Rise of Skywalker, was that the sequels suffered from three things.  One, no concrete vision of where it was going.  I'm convinced that any JJ Abrams writing room consists of a bunch of people saying "You know what would look cool and/or mysterious!"  Then they write all those scenes together as a committee.  .  Two, one-upmanship, everything needs to be bigger and badder and more exciting than everything before.  "this doesn't make sense, but who cares, it looks cool!".  Three, as a result of the first two, there's no real story, just a few tangentially connected events in sequence.  Say what you want about the Prequels, and there is soooo much to criticize, but they existed to tell a story.   The sequels exist because Disney made a corporate crafted blockbuster that just happens to be set in a universe that so many people love.  nuf said.

This has also been largely my opinion of the Disney-era Star Wars. The movies seem to revolve more around acting like a theme-park ride than telling a story.

Watched an F-18 pilot review of the trailer.....he mentioned something that I'm not sure is actually true.  He said that it was his understanding that all the flying in the movie was supposedly real, then he got to the shot of the F14 and did not confirm whether it was real or not.

Was what he said about all the flying being real, true?  He seemed unsure about the F14 scene.  Or maybe it was real footage, but from before their retirement and just enhanced for the scene?  There's no way they got one flying again right?

Would be sweet if this movie was just a teaser for F14s coming back, but I know it's just wishful thinking, lol!

Pretty sure the Kitty is CG. It would take alot of effort to get an F-14 airworthy again from what I can tell.

    Here is CW Lemoine's take.

Just to reassure people, no hedgehogs were harmed in the making of hedgehog flavoured crisps.

I think. I mean, sometimes you'd get the odd one that served a dual function as a toothpick but...

Now I think about it, the NATO "If we give them silly names they'll sound less of a threat" possibility extended to helicopters too - Hip, Hind, Hokum (that one always felt deliberate)...

"Havoc" doesn't quite fit that mold then.:p I always thought NATO gave Soviet bombers the best callsigns. Backfire, Blinder, Bear, Blackjack, etc.

  4. I'm intrigued but some of the elements I've heard about in DS. From a design perspective, it looks fantastic and has almost a Shadow of the Colossus aesthetic. I've been a fan of Kojima since MGS on the PS1. ZOE2 was another big favorite of mine but around MGS4, his games started getting more out there and indulgent. Jingles' review of Death Stranding more or less affirmed my fears that Hideo Kojima had gone "full George Lucas" with no one there to tell him "no".

DS still interests me. I'm just having a harder time seeing it worth dropping $60 on.

:shok: Good Lord... you folks have some odd tastes!:D

could NATO at least stick to non-disparaging designations? "Su-57 Felon", "Mig-15 F***" [although this one became FAR more hilarious with Russia's "Anti LGBT Propaganda" laws], "Mig-21 Fishbed", "Tu-22 Backfire"

They're getting better ... but it's almost as if NATO doesn't like them! LOL

...although in the Su-25's case, wouldn't the NATO reporting name just make the French hungry?:p

Wasn't F***** meant to be the bundle of iron/metal pieces?

Thinking more about it now. Felon doesn't seem so bad given the stealth features of the Su-57. It's far less confusing then following each iteration of the Flanker family. (Flanker-B, Flanker-D, Flanker-E, H, etc.)
