  1. It wasn't terrible, and it was good eye candy, but the story just didn't do much for me. Looking forward to 7 and Frontier.

Frontier then maybe 7. Trust me. The only real reference to 7 in Frontier is smaller earlier dome colony ships, Sheryl saying "Listen to my song", and Ozma listening to "Classic Rock" from Firebomber in like 1-2 scenes.

  2. Okay, I know I said I wouldn't it, but I got bored of studying (I don't think I'm gonna do well on this midterm......) and updated the guide again.

    Keep goin!

And yeah, keep both spellings in there or at least refer to Britai some so Macross fans can at least know who the SDF-08 was named after.

And yes, the entire game uses ALOT of properly spelled Norse. I don't think you can go wrong in that case. Leon's callsign is "Seigfried-01" his rival Rod is "Odin"; and yeah several other references such as locations.

  3. I'm sure there was a good reason for doing that -- probably budget and time constraints. I'm just saying it would have been nice to have the entire series be animated in the same high quality as the episodes I mentioned, and it's not like it was impossible.

I'm probably in the minority on this, as I know a lot of people tend to be purists about these kind of things, but I would totally be on board with them doing a "masterpiece" version of Macross -- basically, keep the original series story, audio and dialogue tracks, and re-animate the visual portion to be of a consistent, high quality. Picture it -- the original series re-animated with DYRL-level visuals. I'd definitely go for that.

Yeah, even hardcore purists usually have a change of heart on a remake after seeing the Pachinko game SDF-M clips

  4. How do you find the Hunter Guild quests, I'm trying to the one for the VF-0S Phoenix and the Striker parts for the VF-1 is there like a marker to tell you where to go?

#1 Go here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6r3Sy1LnkpxSGJxOUR4VFVac0k/edit?pli=1 and look up your quest.

#2 Thank our own Zoroastres for this huge amount of translation work.

#3 Find out what type of quest it is.

If it's a delivery quest, such as "デリバリー指令" " Delivari " go to where you found it, (Right hand side of the linked notes) pick up the box behind the city, then match a map location to the in game quest completion requirements. (You do get a VF-1S skull squad Valk with nukes and improved burst micro missiles from doing all the Doren guild delivery quests, so yeah, it's important)

Sometimes there will be a blue circle on the map for these. You will have to gather the item to deliver inside the circle, then deliver to the location in the quest description.

If it's one of the "Hunter License C" "C級ハンターライセンス試験" Huntaa Liisensu ect then you will likely have to go back to a nearby dungeon. The name of the dungeon will again be in the in game quest description, such as Mimi cave: "ミ" near the starter town Doren

The purple icon ones are easy. Go to the spot on the map, look for the blue " ! ", click on it, and kill the baddie.

To progress, you usually will have to kill Bandit light carriers that are hovering right over towns so you can have access to the town.

Don't be a wuss and snipe carriers! You are a Valkyrie pilot, you are a bad ass. Play like one. Don't sit back and snipe, get in the tube, go find that Meltran and get busy! (Wait, what were we talking about? Oh yeah... Killing carriers)

While doing the below, continue to dodge and take cover if possible.

    • Start out with several full bursts of missiles to melt off the external guns, Reaction missiles are ideal for this (optional)
    • Find the reactor, underside rear, can't miss it. Unload your Gunpod into it, and dual fire with head lasers #3 weapon if you have em. Make sure you are critting continually. Shoot till it blows out.
    • Find the bridge, Gerwalk at eye level with the bastards, shoot your Gunpod at the bridge windows (also with laser if possible) till your hear people screaming for mercy (yes, I'm serious) as they die in a fireball. Again, make sure you are critting continually or you are shooting the wrong spot.
  5. O

For EVERYONE, I'd strongly recommend checking out the "Special Equipment" item list--those inventory items with the diamond/crystal (IIRC) icon confer special effects to you while their in your inventory, and a lot of them are quite nice. Shin's Tags, for example, give you +20 defense and +20 concentration. Be careful, though, because some equips have negative penalties, too--like -100 concentration for "ganesu's fur."

(And would someone mind checking for me to see if these bonuses stack?)

I have noticed on the special diamond/gem shaped items that are all trinkets or personal luck charms (Alto's fold quartz earring, Leon's photo of his sis, ect)

When you click on one, it turns light blue. I think this equips one and only one item. Can only have one light blue highlighted at a time.

Seems like I have been carrying these around for no reason. I have not confirmed on stats, will go do that now....

Confirmed. You equip these items. They do no good if you do not equip them, and you can only have ONE equipped at a time. The others in your inventory give NO stat bonuses. Put them away in storage.

I guess it does no good to have your cockpit filled up with sentimental crap.

  6. Nakajima Megumi really has a great voice, I hope she does more work in anime. She is in "Mondaijitachi ga Isekai Kara Kuru Sou Desu yo" but she is so deadpan you can't tell it's her.

Actually, she's in a series now, called, "Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren't They?", which I believe is about to end.

Yeah that's the "Mondaijitachi ga Isekai Kara Kuru Sou Desu yo"

Anime titles are too damn long these days. It's not cute anymore. It's just inconvenient now.

  7. KotouRanka-san.

    http://youtu.be/P3gHz59ZIhc

    Now that is amusing!

Originally when I saw the video still, I hadn't seen the next Kotoura episode, so I thought they had a cosplay scene! This is really well done,

    Particularly the animation overlays.

    Antibiotictab thanks for posting it!

  8. And for what it's worth, since my original post in this thread I have since finished about half of Macross Frontier. So far I'd give it an A.

Go watch the rest!!! Go now!

The only reason why I wouldn't give it an A+ is that it feels a bit funny to grade it higher the than SDFM.

    LOL religious devotion! Indeed sir.

SDFM is wonderful for it's time, and should be viewed with that in mind, just like Star Trek ToS.

Both available resources and technology of the era shouldn't detract from the story being told.

Watch the rest of the series 1-25 and the two movies before you totally pass judgement. The "impressions so far" are appreciated. Always nice to hear from people as they watch stuff for the first time.

  9. Kawamori didn't do the people... Masayuki was the character designer for Plus, and Yuki Nobuteru was the character designer for Escaflowne.

As clarification: I didn't say he was the Character Designer (Job title). But he did create the shows (as in "hey, I have an idea for a show, here are rough sketches of the characters, make this happen", then character designers produce production character designs)

But yeah, you are right, Yuki Nobuteru likely had more responsibility for the noses in Esca.

  10. So I watched Plus last night. It immediately stuck me as kind of cowboy beebop-y. I enjoyed the mecha design and animation, but the pointy noses and chins were kind of lame.

I also enjoyed that they had a Zentradi with some character development... but it didn't really feel like macross for some reason. It was like any other anime to me.

Also there was no real sense of a battle and the valks seemed like an after thought.

I really only admire the design of the VF-11B and C. The 19 and 22 are... ok. I don't like the 19's robot mode or fighter mode that much. The 22 is a bit better but it doesn't make me want to collect one.

Macross is all about love triangles, but against the backdrop of great conflict. I didn't feel like there was much of a conflict.

Correct. I have many friends that ended up watching Macross Plus because it is the only one readily available in the US, and fell out of love with Macross.

Hey, it's a decent show, yeah. But it's not epic. Badass? Sure. Innovative? Yep. But not fully in the spirit of SDF/DYRL.

Now, go watch Macross Frontier. Your concerns about Plus are corrected in major ways.

It's why I have been saying that Frontier is the only one to truly live up to/come close to the original.

And the sharp noses/chins are what you get when you have everyone's favorite Mech designer Shouji Kawamori do people. He does the same in the later Escaflowne. He seems to like to try and "Get away with" how long/sharp he can make noses. Nobody's perfect I guess.

  11. Theoretically Valkyries do not have a maximum speed in space, irrespective of gravity. However, I suspect that they do have a maximum limit, because after a certain speed, it starts to get extremely difficult to do your job (attacking enemies, protecting your friends).

However, Valkyries do have a maximum acceleration. Some (especially the newer ones) have eyeball popping rates that leave the comparatively slower (usually older) models in the dust.

Gravity is a variable, and depending on how large it is, how close you are, your vector and rate of acceleration, it could work for you or against you.

So, going back to your question: the speed of a Valkyrie in space is infinitely larger than Mach 2. But that speed is entirely irrelevant, because in space combat, it's your ability to change your vector and rate of acceleration/deceleration that matter the most.

Right. No friction in space, so there is no max limit other than relativistic speeds near the speed of light. There are the normal limits on acceleration; the slam of acceleration/deceleration G forces on your body or equipment, and engine limits on how fast you can change speed.

Once you near the speed of light, all sorts of messed up things happen and you literally cannot go faster. If you need more info on relativistic speeds, watch the character designer of Macross Haruhiko Mikimoto's other work, "Gunbuster: Aim for the top".

We always see new or old squad leaders start out space combat saying something similar to "Reverse thrust, match relative speed and engage in dogfight" in DYRL and Frontier (Then they deploy legs forward, break to match the speed of the foes, and shoot em down.) You can't shoot anything if you just zip past em at a stupid high speed.

In 2040 and likely earilier Valkyrie engines are powerful enough to easily kill the pilot if they are used long term full force. Modern engines can even do that now under the right circumstances (Rocket engine out of control, accelerating with gravity helping, ect). The G forces from quick acceleration can make scrambled eggs out of your eyes and brain. Hope you pass out from blood pooling first.

Queadluun-R's and VF's starting with 25 and later have futuristic inertia "canceler" systems that reduce the effects of acceleration on the cockpit "ISC = Inertia Store Converter". The Zentran version is the "Quimeliquola special inertia vector control system" only in the scarce Queadluuns. That's why Millia could flit around and dodge like nobody's business. Current Macross technology cannot fully cancel inertia, and the pilots do feel a reduced less lethal version of it.

Also assisting pilots in tolerating G-forces:

Having your entire body tightly enclosed with something that could put pressure on legs as needed (Quedluun-R, prevents passing out from blood pooling)

EX-Gear flight suits/cockpits (Likely same as above)

    Cybernetic full body replacement

  12. The GU-11 and other gun pods from it's era have the ammo belts wrapped around the cowling of the weapon. Where would such belts be stored on the airframe? Where would they find the time to have the internal motors spool the belt into the weapon?

Note: Friendly conjecture - at some point we are all just having fun BSing if it's not covered in official material.

They have onboard robotic hands specifically made for repair. (At least the "S" models, I wouldn't want Kakizaki trying to operate repair arms)

They would find the time for simple task of reloading a weapon around the same down time they use that repair ability I would assume.

Stored on the airframe? I wasn't saying that. If it's standard ammo, then it likely would be readily available, dropped into a combat zone in advance, or made available from small support craft on extended missions. But on the airframe? Quite a few Valks have optional two seat configs. When you take the extra seat out, that makes for a decent sized storage. (Would not be my first choice for where to keep the ammo in offline storage though!)

  13. There is no free battle mode or survival mode per se. You can fly around the maps getting into random battles. In some regions the enemies come in thick and fast so it's like survival mode, it can get difficult pretty quickly.

Agreed. Early game, just traveling the map is survival mode if you aren't careful on how you avoid getting in fights. There is a friggin ton of Bandit light carriers spewing Valks, beams and missiles that you either can take the time to kill or skirt around trying to scavenge enough gear to get by. It's a hellish world..... I love it.

  14. I

Oh, and Ranka wins hands down the Miss Most Annoying competition. Mylene has her bad moments, but at least she's not just a jellyfish with cute dresses. And she CAN play.

How annoying for someone to be paralyed with fear just because they watch someone screaming as they are slowly squished to death and pop open like a offal & blood filled jelly dounut. Darn pampered kids, just kick the intestines out of your way and carry on.

Yep, Mylene bravely faced those terrible foes that shot make-you-sad beams at people.

(Heh I don't mean to jab at Mylene, she's cool with me.... but comparing bravery Mac7 vs MacF... it's just not the same level of grim to be brave about)

Mylene & Ranka seemed like to me were examples of the current anime trend of cutsey girl-women that aren't allowed to grow up..

I think Ranka pulled herself together and "Matured" just fine for a civilian.

Frontier spoilers, obviously: (And an excellently edited vid featuring Battle Aimo without completely cutting the action)

    Even moreso in the movies.

  15. Well, I can't say I agree with all that he says, but some Macross coverage is better than none, right?

    http://kotaku.com/5990071/so-you-want-to-watch-macross-but-dont-know-where-to-start/gallery/1

I would link to that all over the place if it actually let you link to specific pages; thanks for the post tho.

    Macross Frontier:

Good For: Modern anime fans, classic Macross fans, and anyone who likes the music of Yoko Kano (Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Cowboy Bebop)—so pretty much anyone, really.

Not For: People who dislike joy.

"People that dislike joy" are a noticeable percentage of the population on these forums ;)

Grumpy old forum addicts that hate everything new.

    Kotaku called it 100%

  16. I have just started to watch M7 with very low expectations after seeing all the posts around the place about it, I will say its taken me 5 episodes to just begin to grow on me, it's different but it's not too bad.

Does it ever get past being a show about close ups of Basara's face...just joking...sort of.

Original series and M+ will always be my favourites though.

Yeah, it's not gawd awful, but it's definately not for everyone. And yeah... different. And like many others here have said, it's all about Basara. If you don't like him, you don't like the show. Simple as that.

Personally, I don't hate it. It's something hard core Macross fans should all watch. But I don't reccomend it to fans rediscovering Macross for early on viewing. IMHO it would make it a coin flip on if they continued to watch Macross or just give up on the universe.

Check in again with everyone when you finish the Original Mac 7 series (all of it before Dynamyte & specials) and let us know what you think of the last story arc plot and events.

  17. Whose more annoying Ranka or Mylene? At least Minmay was allowed to grow up..

    So annoying!

Even Mikimoto himself said she wasn't mature as a woman. Always telling people what to do, and it's almost always the wrong thing that will get people killed, then complains about it when she is ignored. Talks and daydreams about her perfect ex-boyfriend all the time. Insisted she could fly a valkyrie, grabbed the controls, then flipped it, screamed, closed her eyes, and crashed it. Then later insisted she should be put in control of a spaceship and got herself and 80,000 people killed or MIA. Oh wait, that was Misa. Sorry I am not sure who could even come close to this.

  18. Yeah, Type C is the way to play for me.

Lock on, slightly lead the target if it is moving perpendicular; when they stop or change direction, let go of lock just for a moment and relock to re-center the target and start shooting again and lead the other way if needed. I try and keep my Gunpod and laser shot speeds exactly the same and as high as sanely possible for ease of aiming & leading targets.

I so love knocking them out of the sky so they are crashed for a moment, then lobbing a Reaction missile at 'em when they are down and watch em burn in nuclear fusion fire while they try and get up.

Anyway, I won't be able to update again until Thursday night. I've added
a bunch of blueprint locations (not all, not by a longshot) and got
complete Guild Quest information/translations for Daoren, Britai City,
    Bowen, Yue, and Skuld.

More for us? Looking forward to it

:hail: Zoroastres - Thank you so much for your hard work!

  19. Mahoromatic is a Wandafuru series, so says i...

I have just watched 1-2 episodes of it.... I mean I want to like it, but the insane amount of annoying fanservice from the teacher character was just crazy. Wasn't even fanservice any character in the show wanted to see. Obaba Sensei. Normal fanservice is a good thing though.
Should I give Mahoromatic another try?

And thanks for not posting any unnecessary pics in this post. :D

You still on about that?
