It wouldn't be THAT hard for them to replace since it's a small, single piece of plastic. It does have tampo printing though so that might be a factor.

As far as I know, I'm the only one on this board that was dumb enough to rip the leg off. If I had loosened the screws, it probably wouldn't have happened. YES...I used too much force and was yanking extremely hard to try to swivel leg into position, and that's certainly the main reason it snapped; but those legs are just too damn tight. I loosened the screws on my replacement and (knock on wood) I've transformed it several times with no problems now. Sure, you can be super careful and keep the legs factory tight....but after going through what I went through, I don't see why anyone would choose to do that!

Not sure if amazon japan is an option for anyone, but it's been consistently available for around 30,000 yen. Has a pretty atrocious review rating though, so I don't know if that's affecting sales.
-
I also want to thank all the posters here for all the kind words. I appreciated the sympathy and solidarity. And of course, now that I have the replacement, the tips and advice came in VERY handy. If I hadn't been so impatient and had come here and asked questions first, I might not have broken it like I did. (Although still....damn that's one tight joint.) So thanks again for all the messages and advice.....I appreciate it!

I am absolutely thrilled to report that my story seems to have a happy ending. I got my package today from the seller. I examined it closely and it seems Bandai went ahead and just replaced the entire toy. The stress crack I gave it the first day isn't there. The re-glued fingertips I broke off aren't there. And most importantly, the LEG I RIPPED OFF is intact and whole. I think they just said "screw it" and threw a replacement toy in there. Now, I have no way to know if mine isn't made of refurbished parts from other rejects, but I don't care, cause I got it back and it's FIXED. Head laser is still intact! All the other parts, the pilot figures, the gun, all the missiles....those are mine from before. The box is even mine. The only thing that's different is the main toy. Thank god. Out of the box, it doesn't appear to peg together as flush as my first one, but hey, this one has two legs, so I'll take it. Tail fins are as pathetic as ever. Just looking at them makes them fall off. Bandai included an additional insert about the tail fins, so that's obviously a widespread issue. THIS TIME....I unscrewed the legs and gave the inner screws a bit of an unwinding. So far so good....in Battroid mode everything pegs together just fine. Still a little gappy in fighter mode but I'll live with it, and maybe it'll improve over time. I AM GOING TO BE SO GODDAMN CAREFUL WITH THIS THING. I really am thrilled. Man, did I luck out. I take back all the angry frustrated things I said when I got this toy the first day. I love it. I really do love it. I finally own a YF-19. Whew. After three weeks I think I can finally unclench.

Damn. Wish I'd have got that price. I'll know very very soon about the resolution of my issue. I'll either have a broken toy sent back to me....or a fixed one. I'm almost sick with anticipation. Ugh.

I am simultaneously embarrassed yet honored to become part of the vernacular like "Bandai'd." If I can help just ONE person out there not horrifically destroy a $300 toy, then I'll consider that a good deed. I am currently in the States for two weeks while my "situation" is unfolding far away, completely out of my control. I believe amazon probably would have replaced it with no problems, but apparently my amazon order was a 3rd party order. Sigh. The hits just keep on coming. My first message from the seller was that I broke it and it was my fault. So I asked "OK, where's that leave me? Now you have my money, my toy, AND the money I spent shipping back." His first reply was that he could offer a 20,000 yen refund, which I really wasn't expecting. But another message followed soon after that he was awaiting word from the Bandai repair center. So I'm just sitting tight I guess. It really sucks, but if it comes down to taking 20,000 yen back, I suppose I'd eat that last hundred dollars as an expensive life lesson in being SUPER careful with expensive toys. (A lesson you'd think you'd learn before your tenth birthday.) But maybe Bandai can slap a new leg on it? Either way, I have to wait and see now, and it's frustrating cause I won't be back in Japan for two more weeks, so there's a high potential to get screwed over. Anyway....thanks for reading my sad-sack status report.....I'll leave on a happy note and say I'm glad you're enjoying your YF-19s. However my issue plays out I really hope it can end with me having a functioning YF-19 in my collection too. I'd rather have the toy than the money at this point. I really did like it in the end.

Well, my busted toy is on it's way back to amazon japan. Nothing to do now but pray to the Toy Gods that I can get a replacement. The Toy Gods are fickle. Sometimes they are good to us, and sometimes they curse us. I know we've all had a share of both over the years.
-
Thanks to all of you for your condolences. The YF-19 was the most expensive single toy I've ever bought in all my decades of collecting. And to hear and feel that horrible SNAP....well, you can imagine the flash of horror/shame/guilt that causes. It sucks when you snap the leg off a $20 toy, but this? Ugh. Wonder if I'll even be a able to sleep tonight.
-
Well, I'm sending it back to amazon tomorrow. I honestly don't know what will happen though cause essentially I ripped the leg off a $300 toy. I don't know if I have a case of it being faulty or if I'm just an idiot. Even though I've been on an emotional roller coaster with this thing from day one, I really was starting to love it. It looks amazing in both modes (I never really cared for Gerwalk) and I thought I had finally figured out how to geeennnntttly interact with the thing. Obviously not. I'm crossing my fingers that amazon will come through for me, but like I said, for all I know they'll send the broken toy back to me.
-
Well, when I broke both fingertips off the regular hands, that sucked. When THIS happened, I honestly almost threw up. I'm still in shock. My fault for using too much force, but I think that leg had a problem too, cause it was always misaligned no matter what I did. Ironically, the model glue worked like a charm on the fingertips. But there's no fixing this.

Was transforming it. And here I thought I was really getting the hang of it. And then SNAP.
-
And.....thus ends my tragic and brief love affair with the YF-19.
-
Rainy as hell today in Tokyo wasn't it? I got soaked. I'm really turning around on this thing after my initial horrible experience. I think I might even be starting to.....love it.

Me again AGAIN. After I just posted that I was an idiot that didn't watch videos, someone posted another video and I realized that even when I thought I had it all figured out, I was STILL doing it wrong. Thanks to the video posted above, I tabbed the legs in to a different slot to get the fast packs on in fighter mode. It still took me an HOUR of fiddling around with the damn thing. I really do think mine has some factory imperfections that don't allow it to align properly. After an hour, I got all the fast packs in and the wings tabbed in the single tab that they go in. It looks a LOT better than I had it before...it looks like the guy's in the video. Still took me a damn hour though. But now the fast packs are on, the fold booster is on, Isamu and Jan are secure and on their way to Earth to interrupt Sharon's concert. Once all the frustration is over, it's truly a thing of beauty to see on my shelf. Man, my fingers hurt though...this damn thing has a LOT of sharp edges. Be careful. Still amazed I didn't break it.

Me again. I just spent the last two hours playing with this thing....and this time, it was actually FUN, not the joyless frustration of the unboxing. Now it's not quite like the scene in "Step Brothers" and we've just become best friends, but I really really am starting to warm up to this guy. I still have SOME tabbing/clearance issues. One of the legs just doesn't seem aligned and I can't seem to figure out where the problem is, so I really think it's somewhere in the assembly. However, after watching a lot of videos and taking my time, it's a lot better than it was before. I want to fully admit that almost ALL of the problems I encountered the first day were USER ERROR. Just me being impatient and uninformed. Thank goodness I didn't cause any permanent damage, just a crack on the main fuselage that I thought was supposed to twist 180 degrees cause I'm an idiot that didn't take 15 minutes to watch a video. Having said that, this is still a VERRRY delicate/fragile toy compared to what I'm used to. But now that I KNOW that, I'm starting to enjoy it more. I'm still messing up though. Apparently I didn't stow the hands correctly in fighter mode, cause when I transformed it today BOTH trigger fingers had snapped off. Thankfully there are plenty of optional hands. I reattached the teeny tiny trigger fingers with model glue but I have no idea if it'll actually hold. For now, I'm letting them dry and I put it back into fighter mode handless. My main gripe is still that I can't have the fast packs attached and have the wings tabbed in, and that's no user error, that's just the stupid design. I was about to display it with the fast packs and boosters in fighter mode, but I just can't stand seeing it untabbed like that, so I took them off. Fold Booster attaches just fine though, but it seems wrong to just have that on without the fast packs, although, that IS how it's shown on the box. Fast packs aside, I think I managed to get everything tabbed in both modes. Dear god, moving those metal hip tabs up and down for Battroid scared the hell out of me. I don't want to do that over and over. I still can't believe I haven't broken more off of this thing. One last thing....the tail fins suck. They just suck. If a butterfly so much as glances in their direction, they fall off. But at least they go back on, so it's just really annoying more than anything else.

Well, I tried to explain I'm a total novice with this type of collectible. He makes MP Megatron look like child's play. But in the last 24 hours I'm really coming around. Glad I didn't snap the damn thing out of frustration....your pics are gorgeous as always Ted!

PS.....I've taken over this thread in the last few days and I apologize for my keyboard diarrhea. But if anyone is interested, I want to refer you back to my original post from almost 10 years ago that explains my whole love affair with the YF 19. It's a bit of a long read but again, to mention "poop" for the second time in one sentence, if you need some bathroom reading and wanna read about a complete stranger's journey to get this toy, I'll post it here:
-
The opposite of my first few times!! It's getting better now...I'm more calm. As of now, the only casualty is a stress mark I put right in the center of the toy cause I thought the stupid thing was supposed to rotate 180 degrees. Whoops. As of now, I'm still keeping all the missiles and stuff cause you know how we collectors are...if I start parting out pieces, even pieces I don't use, it's always gonna be "incomplete" you know? Collectors can be sick in the head sometimes, can't we?
-
I still haven't come to terms with the fact that I spent $300 on this thing. It's not the worst product in the world but it's certainly nowhere near the best. I shouldn't keep calling it a "toy" either....it's a very delicate movable pre-built model. It's getting trashed on amazon japan, ratings wise. Obviously this was too rich for my blood. Like they say, if you have to ASK if you can afford something, then you obviously can't afford it. I'm not really in a position to be throwing $300 around on toys. I wonder if I would have just been happier all along if I'd just been able to get the Yamato 1/72 like I wanted back when it first came out. What was it, about a hundred dollars? At the time that seemed like a grand to me. I've got the 19 back in plane mode, on the stand, with no extra parts except the gunpod underneath. I've got it as tabbed in as I possible could without breaking anything. (I'll probably end up breaking it sooner than later I'm sure.) But for now, just looking at it, it's pretty lovely. I should try to be more positive, I guess.
-
Well, I changed it back to plane mode when I woke up and it was a lot faster. I'm getting the hang of it. Still finicky as hell and sequences where I accidentally ripped things off and had a mini heart attack thinking I broke the damn thing. Still can't get everything to tab in at the same time to save the life of me. The stupid thing was so expensive cause it has all these extras and options, and I'm actually just displaying it with nothing but the gunpod. I guess cause it's my first YF 19 I just wanna appreciate it's simplest look first, without the bells and whistles. Oh and the fact that the wings can't tab in to the fast packs on the legs almost gave me a stroke, so better to avoid it. I want to love this toy but I can't. It's still frustrating. And dear god was it expensive. I personally do NOT feel it was worth the money, no matter how many extra missiles it came with. But at least I don't HATE it. So that's an enormous step up from my four hour struggle last night. The packaging is absolutely wonderful by the way, but you guys already know that from pics and videos. I feel weird. On the one hand, I own a YF-19 toy. FINALLY. I am not exaggerating: I've been pining for one for two decades. On the other hand? Other than LOOKING at it on my shelf, it's not a pleasant experience. I guess it's like finally getting the hot chick you've been in love with for years to come home with you, and then you can't get it up. Or something like that.
-
Did....did I get it? Is it supposed to look so thin?
-
Well.....it's just there staring at me so I tried again, this time watching anymoon's Advance video. My favorite step was "OK, essentially BREAK the stupid thing by shoving the torso around the nosecone." I can't believe I didn't snap this thing in half. I had it in an actual gangly Battroid mode for a minute, but now I have the added pleasure of stress marks. Great. I actually started to click "return" on amazon but I decided to get back into fighter mode. Siiiiiigh. I don't know. I'm so conflicted. It's a fiddly goddamn ball of rage and blister inducing frustration. BUT.....it's the YF-19. And in fighter mode, without those dumb fast packs that don't even fit, it really does look lovely. It's only been a few hours. I'm probably just being rash. I'll wait and see how I feel later.
-
I'm sure I just need to chill out and calm down....give it a day or two and try again. As frustrated as I am there's no denying it looks beautiful. As long as you don't touch it.

Well I bitched and moaned and cried like a spoiled child cause I had to wait 24 hours for my stupid toy. Be careful what you wish for. After 20 long years, since my first breathless viewing of Macross Plus, I finally own a fully transformable toy of the incredible YF-19. The box was amazing. The presentation of the toy and its parts are great. I took it out...ever so carefully. This is my very first Macross toy and I've heard how fragile they are. But I was gonna transform it. What followed was perhaps the most frustrating, joyless, irritating four hours I've ever experienced with a toy. The only reason this thing wasn't smashed to a fine plastic dust was cause I reminded myself over and over and over: "$300. $300 frakking dollars a-hole." As far as I know, there's no QC problems. It's just the fiddliest frakking goddamn thing I've ever messed with and I own all the MP Transformers. I got it halfway to Gerwalk and pieces were popping off left and right. It was just this disgusting splayed out Cronenberg mess of a robot plane....horrible. I panicked and just decided to TRYYYY to get it back into a plane. Took well over 2 hours but I think I managed. The tabs just will NOT. frakkING. TAB. Just when I got everything about as lined up as humanly possible without snapping everything and it was a plane again, I decided to put on the fast packs and fold booster, stick it on the shelf, and never touch it again until I die. THE goddamn fast packs untabbed everything even worse!!! RRRAGGGJHHHHH.......is this Macross collecting??? Or am I just THAT stupid? If this is what it's like, why do it to yourselves?? Anyway, here it is right now but I'm so angry and frustrated I don't even wanna look at the goddamn thing.
