DHL man finally surrendered it today.
Haven't even gone through all the extras but I can safely say I'm one happy customer.
The video is thankfully unmolested. They didn't try to kill all the dust and grain, which would have killed all the other detail as well. And as expected there's LOTS of grain in that 16mm film. Could have used some more bitrate but the discs are already filled close to the brim.
I've only gotten around to watching SDF TV earlier this year and fell in love with it more than I expected. The BD box was very tempting because of all the extras but I was fearful of DNR ruining the actual watchability.
I'm extremely glad that this will be my definitive archive version. I'll need to make proper shelf space for this gorgeous box.
Comparison vs the only DVD source I have, which is the Galaxy-Network Remaster DVD rips: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/127283
A few sample screens:
And the start of silliness:

DHL seems to be giving my package a world tour

I think you're wrong. The rip is by Thora and they're most definitely not "idiots".
Thora only did Zero BD rips, not Plus.
There is no HD sources for Plus available to the public. Thus any "HD" release at this point is upscale and thus done by idiots.
-
Awesome! Hey, what about Macross Plus? Any news on a BluRay release? There is a 720p torrent rip of it out there, so where did that come from?
That's just idiots upscaling DVDs pretending there's an actual benefit out of the process.

Is anyone concerned that the video quality on the Blu-ray/PS3 combo disc might not end up looking too good? Just wondering if having the PS3 game on the same disc could eat into space that could've been used for video quality...
Nope. The game is 10GB at most and most anime BDs have a hard time getting past ~35GB for the main ~2hr feature.
Biggest one I know is delicously grainy Nausicaa which is around 39GB for 120min. DYRL is 115min and assuming the video stays similarly unmolested it'll fit just fine.
-
So can we expect metric tons of good pics showing up?
Or will this be a bit restrictive to that?
Would be ineresting to see just how much detail they're willing to put, especially in the cockpit.

Yay, order complete with CDJapan.
Hopefully no evil email this time.
-
Unfortunately this installment of FIRST is criminally short at 11 pages.
This brings back memories of following Hellsing.
You wait a month and Hirano gives you 8 pages.....
-
Should work out okay. I read up on cdjapan's requested item info, and it looks like they may actually be ordering direct from Bandai's store.
And today in my inbox I find...

Thanks for the info Keith.
Hopefully this actually works out.

Read the quoted text, the film elements aren't around anymore! Not surprising considering the video editing techniques they used at the time. All we can hope is that they've been able to reasonably upscale from a high quality analog master. It won't look great, but it could look decent.
Quote only says "master film for Flashback 2012 doesn't exist" because the whole thing only exists on video, so there is no "master film for Flashback 2012" and never was.
But the animation parts still had to be shot on film first before being telecined to video for editing with the other footage. That still has to be out there unless something happened to it, which is what I want to know.
As I said in my post on the first page, this is the same exact problem as Star Trek TNG. Shot on film but originally edited on video so it's been looking like crap for years. Now for the BDs they're going back to rescan the film and reedit everything again. Japan should be able to do the same with Flashback 2012.
-
2) Unfortunately, the master film for Flashback 2012 doesn't exist, so it will be an upconvert from the best quality master available.
Expected but still disappointing they're not remastering it properly.
Anyone know if they still have the film for the animated parts? Can this actually be redone eventually when they finally feel like putting the effort in? Or is it genuinely doomed to stay SD due to reasons other than time/money/effort?
-
I wonder if Flashback 2012 will be actually HD or upscaled. That was edited on video and has a ton of analog effects. They'd have to remaster it like TNG is getting now. Can Japan afford/bother with that?
-
So when exactly is this reprint starting?
Seems like a good time to start getting it for those that missed the original run.
-
I just hope the releases are spaced far enough apart to allow for saving in between.
Escaflowne and Gunbuster BD Boxes in February, SDF in May, hopefully a summer full of employment and paycheques after that before the super duper DYRL BD Box to supplement the delicious DVD box from 2007. That was the first thing I ever ordered from amazon japan and my god were those two little books worth it. What could they possibly include in the BD release?
-
nothing on bandaivisual's site regarding bd-editions of DYRL or Plus, yet.
hopefully when they do become available, the pricing won't be as insane as this TV's bd-pricing.
I'm pretty sure they'll spread out the releases. We probably won't get anything more than this and DYRL in 2012. Wouldn't be any fun if they gave us everything we wanted all at once.
-
are they joking with those prices?
Those are pretty standard for Japan.
I just hope they don't filter the hell out of the video for this release. The HD Remaster on DVD was very nice and unmolested, but sadly SD.
This will hopefully be the final definitive release.

Best news ever. Saving up is gonna be annoying though.

Thanks for the info

The Search-box is in the upper right corner of each page. Type in the word you wanna search for, then where, i.e. This topic, this section, this forum, etc..., then press Enter.
Didn't notice that you could do This Topic in the box. I just went straight for advanced search from forum front page
It's just a flight suit, or what they call, inner-wear. They don't really need it to use an EX-Gear.
Well I'm looking for what they seem to call the SMS Pilot Suit.Or at least Luca's chracter profile calls it that and has a sketch or two. I was hoping there'd be more. Seems issue #43 is what I should be trying to hunt down since that apperently covers space suits for all the eras. Maybe issues #19 and #9 since those have Ozma and Michael's profiles. Alto's didn't have any pilot suit pics.
Thanks!

I'm a bit late to the party but is there a searchable index of the Chronicle somewhere?
I'm looking for some reference for the Frontier G-suit, the stuff that hides under the EX-Gear. I know there's a 38 page thread before this one but I can't figure out how to search individual topics.
Any help would be appreciated.
