  1. So blowing 3% on our GDP for an obsolete fighter was a good move? There are so many other worthwhile things the government could have spent its money on, not just the arrow.

Like what? In terms of defense spending, I would think the Arrow would've been much more of an asset than what they got from the BOMARC-B. And I don't see how the Arrow would've been obsolete. Given upgrades, it probably would've lasted many many years - even the F-111 which was lambasted eventually found it's place and proved it's worth).

However much of it does rest with Avro, who initiated an incredibly ambitious project and made some fairly questionable decisions in the design process that led to massive cost overruns. The case is actually taught in public administration courses of how not to run a procurement project. A failure as epic as the Arrow was going to have recriminations no matter what. What happened with Avro was unfortunate, but it was largely the company's own doing.

In what way? Besides, wasn't it the RCAF that wanted the Arrow and initiated the program? And wasn't it the RCAF that wanted to gold-plate the aircraft? IIRC Avro Canada did everything it could to make sure that the Arrow would be a winner.

Now could Dief do something to soften the blow? Maybe, but there was no way for the government to save 14,000 jobs. A lightweight fighter project or something else might have been sustained. But then again should it have been Avro with its obvious failings in management? I'm personally skeptical. Canada was too small a market to sustain a major defence aircraft manufactor on the scale of Avro. Even in the U.S. major contractors were starting to fold in too. Its an unfortunate point in our history for sure, but I'm not going to gloss it over with a nationalist paint and romantic visions of our history.

I'm not an expert, but I would think it would've been better to stick with the Arrow and keep Avro (and all of the benefits that a high-tech industry could provide) alive than instantly crushing everything with a pen. Heck, Sweden who is just as small (in terms of market) as Canada seems to do just fine.

  2. Actually, the Hunter and the Vulcan were mostly of a similar time period to the Victor and Lightning. And with Spitfires, I guess it depends on what Mark you're talking about - I think the Mk. IX is the most elegant of the breed, but the later Griffon-engined marks can best be described as "beefy", and the original Mk. I had a faired-in canopy that to me seems less fitting for the lines than the slightly later bulged one. The bumpy Lightnings and Victors were later Marks too.

All of the V-bombers were gorgeous. The Victor particularly looks futuristic when I flip through ancient warplane guidebooks (dating from the 60s) with photos that are black & white.

With regards to elegant Brit warplanes, the best looking prop planes (WW2 and post-WW2) were the Merlin-engined Spitfires, the Centaurus-powered Tempest II and Sea Fury, and the twin-engined Mosquito/Sea Hornet. The worst looking plane was by far the Fairey Barracuda. I'll excuse the Gannet because it's an ASW plane.

For jets, the best lookers were (IMO) the Hunter, the Scimitar, the Lightning and the V-bombers. Oh, and ofcourse the unfortunately cancelled TSR-2. The Typhoon is nice looking too. But I'm not sure if it's accurate to call it a Brit fighter.

  3. In any category except looks. I swear that had to be one of the ugliest aircraft ever made. It's like every engineer in the British isles decided to start beating their designs soundly with the ugly stick after the Hawker Hunter was made.

I like the looks of the Lightning. Very macho looking. Love the odd shaped wings.

Lightning with Victor tanker (another gorgeous Brit aircraft)

  4. I was joking. We Brits never get to have anything nice. *sniff*

Edit - er - the Typhoon is actually in service, with several countries, at least. I'm not sure how up to date the Wikipedia entry is, but the Su-37 seems still to be largely a development article...?

    If only...you guys never cancelled the TSR.2... ;_;

Now that would've been something nice.

But hey, the EE Lightning wasn't too bad right?

The Typhoon isn't that bad. And it's probably unfair to compare it against the F-22 or F-35. I would assume it's more than a match against the latest Sukhois.

  5. now that whe are at the size! question:

i heard that the 1/60 VF-0 Yamato Series is just as big as 1/48 VF-1 yamato series

i have some if not alot trouble comprehending that :huh::wacko:

if anyone have a answer to this or can brush away the claim...

    please doo!

You mean in like these 2 pics? The light-blue one is a repainted 1/48. The one in the middle is the VF-0. The Hikaru is a 1/60.

    VF0S2.JPG

    VF0S1.JPG

Yeah, it's kinda odd. Some folks have stated that the VF-0 is close to the size of a F-14 Tomcat and the VF-1 is closer in size to the F-16 Falcon. If that's the case Yamato might have it right.

Look at the VF-1 in 1/144 scale in comparison to an F-14 in the same scale -

Notice the hugeness of the Tomcat.

*Note: None these pics are mine

  6. Agreed. Very cool song.

So who do you recommend for '80s JPop? I like a lot of late '90s JPop stuff, but my '80s collection is small and random...

That depends on what kind of music you like... but let's see...

Well, you can't go wrong with Anzen Chitai. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fz8e-lPJBrs

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPcIpV3gBUU

    PSY*S is good too.

For J-pop idol singers, there's plenty to choose from. Idol singers were all the rage during the 80's and Macross is indicative of that era. :)

Among my favorites (not including Iijima Mari) include...

    Oginome Yoko

    and

    Nakamori Akina

    and

    Utoku Keiko/Mi-Ke

  7. If you like '80s J-Pop, are you a Kome Kome Club fan? They're awesome.

I'm not a big fan of theirs but I do own one of their albums. The song "Roman Hikou" is a classic. I could listen to that song anyday.

  8. Don't encourage

Actually, i've noticed in the last few years how much "porn" is creeping into Akiba, for example. I used to go to some stores that were full of robots and such. Then all of a sudden, half the store is given over to dolls of girls doing questionable things dressed in all manner of leather items.

There's a pretty sick store in Akiba near a Yellow Submarine where grown men go to buy all manner of photos, soft-core videos and standees of girls just south of 13. I reeeeeeally hate that stuff.

What are you talking about? Porn has been part of Akiha as long as I can remember. I mean, what do you think those hentai doujinshi and bishoujo games are? For goodness sake half the stores in Akiha is dedicated to such things.

Admittedly there has been a slight increase in the amount of risque material now at Akiha. But then look at the current trends in anime and games. It all about "moe" right now.

  9. 1万と2000年前から愛してる某作品に引き続き、河森正治総監督にはお世話になっているんですが、いや~河森さんは相変わらず天才です。

    今回のバルキリーVF-25は今までにないカッコ良さ!

Rough translation: In addition to loving your works since before the year 10,000+2000, I've been indebted to Chief Director Kawamori. As usual, Kawamori-san is a genius. This VF-25 Valkyrie just has a utter coolness.

  10. 変形もプロポーションも完全再現すべく、ウチの開発担当者がバリバリ頑張っていますのでクオリティには期待していて下さい。

What's really said: "Our production staff is super hard at work in order to perfectly reproduce the transformation and proportions, so please look forward to the quality."

  11. I'd buy small, cheap and detailed die-cast models of nontransformable valkyries like the doyushas. But dang the doyushas are too friccking expensive. I'd pay for less than half the price. If Hotwheels were 9.99 each, i can't see why can't valkyries be about the same price range too. :(

You simply can not compare diecasts of VFs to Hot Wheels. There's a huge difference in detail, production scale, and buying demographic.

I suppose you can price at $9.99 but then I wouldn't be surprised if detail and quality went waaaaay down.

  12. IIRC a forum member here at MW once offered water-slide decals for Yamato toys. Does anyone have any extras they can spare? I don't know how much they're worth, but I'm willing to pay a few bucks.

    These Yamato stickers aren't holding up too well. ;_;

I particularly need a better decal or sticker of the "U.N. SPACY" on the leg.

    Any offers/help appreciated.

  13. Vostok 7, you have my support. Fighter mode is my favorite mode for ALL the variable fighters ever designed.

I too think the 1/200 variable fighters collection that Yamato will be releasing soon is a good start. I hope that the quality is better than the 1/144 F-toys Chara-works VF-1s. I like the 1/144 collectables but there's so much room for improvement.

I'd love to get accurate non-transforming fighter-mode only collectables in a scale larger than 1/200. 1/200 is a bit too small. Maybe something in 1/100 scale?

Or heck, how about 1/72 scale non-transforming diecasts? Priced somewhere like the fighter plane diecasts we see from companies like Dragon, Century Wings, Hobby Master, and the like. Around say $40-50?

  14. Hm.... I've got some loose joints on my HellDivers, but they're still a gorgeous figure and amazing fun... if you haven't already got one, you should def. pick up a Brocken... it's really a hidden gem in the line, but lacks accessories...

Without a doubt, Revoltechs are absolute fun to play with. I too recently got the Helldiver (as well a movie vers. Ingram). Both are very nice looking. The right leg on my Ingram is loose but it's not proving to be a major problem (the problem doesn't seem to be the Revoltech joint but rather the hole that it sits in).

One thing fun I did recently -

    ”Miura" Ingram :D

  15. Um, didn't Boeing try to get this deal in an underhanded way by hiring/recruiting an AF official involved in the tanker selection process? Which then led to a scandal that jailed the AF person and a Boeing exec?

Yeaahhh.... Boeing....maybe... if you had played fair, ya wouldn't be in this mess.

  16. Here's a Japanese review on CMs toy: http://gsr.seesaa.net/article/82903832.html

The toy in the review had issues with the front shaft - particularly with those pins just like the Collectdx reviewer (as you can see in the pics). The reviewer decided to make his own fix/modification.

The reviewer says he was angry at first but after making the modification, he's quite happy with it. :)

Though his hasn't broken yet, the probability of the windshield breaking is 100% says he.

Bandai's Action Base 2 apparently works nicely with the toy.

I've read a few Japanese reviews on the CMs toy and the general feeling is that the toy (mainly the bike) feels more like a prototype that was rushed out.

  17. They hopefully are changing their ways now though. Which means we might see other valkyries which they neglected in the past for the future like the stuff in macross 7 redone if we all knock on wood hard enough.

So why are the "yamato fanboys" unhappy?

What could happen is they never give up the license for macross F for others, and decide NOT to do other mecha which other companies are willing to do if they had the license so that's what I'm worried about. (ie like how we never saw the vf-22 that max and miria used in macross 7 or the black vf-22 that gamlin used in the mac 7 ova which is something I wish yamato could do but who can't due to no licence :( *sigh* It's the "sitting on the license but not making anything" that is the issue not that "they are not capable of quality" thing.)

I say don't worry about the future. What's past is past. Enjoy what's actually coming out NOW. There's no use moaning and worrying yourself silly about what may or may not happen. Much of it is out of our control anyways. Besides, it's better to be optimistic. :D
