  1. I'm finding that Ohnogi interview more and more silly than I did before. This is what we get for living outside japan. We couldn't tell right away if the source is authentic or not so it's easy to get fooled. Even more so, interviews like this tend to color one's perception of the show. Atleast it did mine for a little while. I'd be happy if this is completely disproved. It'll feel weird to have the tides turn, the Ohnogi issue is filled with holes now. It is fun however to watch Gubaba "bury this Ohnogi-worked-on-MF-nonsense under 1000 ft of dirt, several layers of concrete, about 10m thick solid titanium-composite armor and a moat with sharks with freakin-lasers on their heads" from the sidelines.

  2. You all need to fill us non-fluent japanese readers about the contents of those links. I can't follow. What does this mean? Is this an episode commentary from Kawamori? What did the famitsu article cover?

    「一度かけた歌をつぎにかけるときは、それよりよく聴かせたいと思って

    (中略)わかりやすいところで『星間飛行』のキラッってのを

    聴かせるためだけに、12話が作られていると言ってもウソじゃありません(笑)」

But to summarize what I got from this thread, there is not enough evidence to point out that Ohnogi really worked on the second half of the series. I don't know shaloom and I'm not saying he's making things up but considering the amount of information the liner notes had, is it possible to be able to jot all down in complete details through a one-time listen to the radio? He must've recorded those interviews. Maybe? If he did, I wonder if he can share it with us to back up his liner notes.

I never understood the japanese credits at the end of each episodes, but Ohnogi should also be on the credits if he was one of the people who worked on a certain episode. Since noone here saw his name, right now, I'm also skeptic. :( Sorry.

  3. Yeah, I think five volumes seems to be what they're aiming for.

As for Aoki's art quality, I think the characters are actually beginning to LOOK like the characters, and not a bunch of 7-year-olds cosplaying. The mecha still isn't all that great, though.

That said, when he does a humorous story, like the "Macross F Outside Story" in Macross Ace, I think his art style is perfect.

Are there going to be scans? ^_^

  4. And, as Azrael hinted at, I'm happier with the harem ending than with Sheryl scooping up Alto, leaving Ranka and the dust, and causing all the most obnoxious of the Sheryl fans to crow and cheer and rub everyone's noses in how right they were.

That's scary. I'd rather have them do the harem ending than decide the winner based on a character's popularity, both Ranka and Sheryl, unless of course Kawamori finally decided it on his own. Off topic: Is Kawamori going to take charge in the movie? Or will it be Ohnogi?

  5. Wow, um, I'm not aware of that interview. I might be too outdated of the latest happenings. I wasn't even aware Kawamori wasn't in charge of the last episodes but Ohnogi. That's probably why a lot of fans turned against Ranka in the latter part of the series. I've seen a lot of fans confess that they liked ranka in the beginning but she became unbearable later in the end and sheryl became likable. I thought Kawamori changed preference. This explains it. I can't say I agree with all of it, with sheryl labeled as a mary sue, but I did enjoy your rant and felt like a lot of it spoke to what I felt after watching the whole thing too. I also felt there were some inconsistencies here and there with the characters' behaviors. The insertion of Mao Nome's connection to Sheryl did nothing to the storyline and felt like a last minute addition. Bilrer's dream in ep 16 and its significance was never explored. I wasn't a big fan of Ranka calling Sheryl from the dead since I thought that scene was overdone.

The interview confirmed that Ranka's potential was undeniable but ultimately in the end, it was never shown. She was made to leave Frontier, learn about her past, only to grieve and be manipulated. She had to be rescued in the end. All in all, I never felt like she "shone" for lack of a better word. I'm not blaming Ohnogi here aside from the good things that happened from his intervention, just the downside of it all is that Ranka's character suffered the most. And the worst part is, Ohnogi claimed that he was there to salvage her character. There could've been a better way to handle all these changes without neglecting any character. How many fans ended up hating Ranka in the end? The fans' reactions to Ranka were much favorable when she popped out of a VF in Galia and killed everyone with Seikan Hikou. My two cents since I think Final Vegeta's rant needs a bit more credit. ;)

B: Exactly who do you think?

HO: Well, I convinced Kawamori to let me do a Macross Frontier epic. His series has everything but that and Macross has always been epic. That's why I came.

To tell a director that his story isn't "epic", that can't not hurt.

  6. Just realized something...

What Ranka knows (before she left for the Vajra homeworld):

    - Sheryl and Alto went out on a date in Folmo mall; and Sheryl kissed him on the cheek

    - Sheryl and Alto hang out together a lot (gossip from Nanase)

    - Sheryl kissed Alto during the filming of Birdman

    - Alto and Sheryl were hugging on the flight deck of Mihoshi

    bad enough, right? BUT...

    What Ranka doesn't know:

    - alto broke his own vow not to go back to Saotome mansion just to see Sheryl

    - Alto comforted sheryl (ep22) and more or less promised that he will stay by her side forever

    - Alto (may have) decided not to pursue Ranka and join the SMS mutiny because of Sheryl

    - Alto (may have) this time initiated kissing Sheryl in her darkes hour

    - Alto and Sheryl sort of moved in together

    - Most, if not all, of NUNS knows that alto and sheryl were going out

    - Alto and sheryl shared another passionate kiss (ok, all the passion may have come from sheryl. but still...) before the final battle

    - Alto decided that if he had to, he would kill Ranka

AND all this after Ranka had already told him, in no uncertain terms, that she loved him.

if she found all this out, I wonder if she would have been as optimistic in throwing that challenge to Sheryl at the end.:p

Not "may have" Alto didn't leave Frontier BECAUSE of Sheryl. I think he was so happy when Ozma left him. Afterwards, he was always laughing with Sheryl and looking at her like a man in love. Sheryl looked happy too. They both were happy. That was supposed to be happiness. I think.

But but what Ranka doesn't know is....Alto joined SMS to protect her always. And Alto doesn't know that Ranka wanted to sing only for him. When I saw 23, I couldn't believe what I heard that Ranka and Alto have been into each other all this time, but one thinks she doesn't have a chance and one is just pretending to not notice until everything has become twisted. Then when you get to the finale Kawamori chooses to end things in a status quo. I heard he did have a solid resolution in mind and he thinks the triangle is not equal, but he thinks the open ending was for the best so that everyone wins.

    Hah, right.

  7. ARE YOU KIDDING? If you stick up for Ranka around here they take you out!!!

That's if you're in Animesuki. I stick up for Ranka and I'm quite convinced that Alto has been in love with her all this time (but was only playing dense) and I can back it up, but why waste any time? Kawamori had trolled us to no return so I doubt any kind of persuasion will convince anyone which girl Alto leaned more. Forget it.

What will happen to this board now? Are we going to hibernate soon until the movie airs which is more likely next year?

  8. I don't think it's an 'opinion' that Alto and Sheryl didn't have sex. It's a fact. Sheryl has a bodily fluid transmitted disease. Alto will be infected by now but there were no signs that he was suffering the same thing as Sheryl. It was strongly implied in 23 that Alto stayed with her because of kindness. Not pity, but kindness. Sheryl was too conscious of letting Alto get near her blood. To say they kissed in 22 is arguably possible but to say they had sex is in the realm of delusion. ^_^ Anyone want to poke fun at the 'salute'?

The unresolved triangle didn't keep me from giving the whole Macross Frontier 10/10. It was a fun ride. Sheryl may had more screentime than Ranka in 24, but it doesn't really feel like Ranka was put in the backburner in exchange. Ever since Ranka left in 21, she's the subject of everyone and we got a lot more from her memories and the outcome of her journey during those times. Between her and Sheryl, Ranka had more exposure overall. That's also why I feel no dissatisfaction from the series. One of the reasons I enjoyed this was because Ranka's story interests me. Not only because of her romance with Alto, but also because of the Vajra, her glowing abdomen, and the 117th research fleet.

There's also the subject of 'communication' and how a simple misunderstanding can lead to one of your nightmares. Michael's death was frustrating in all aspects but that's what makes it appealing. The frustration of "coulda" "woulda" "shoulda" reaches out of the screen and is able to get you.

  9. Got it. Finally. I believe Ranka's DYRL bless the little queen was hair raising in a positive way. It surpassed the original for me. Especially at the end where her voice reverberated everywhere and the way she delivered "mou hitori bochi ja nai". Splendid.

Anata no Oto's full version was amazing. They should've played the whole version in the final episode. Empty Diamond Crevasse and Blue Ether was on par for me.

Triangular fight on stage is truly interesting. They said it was a song for Misa? I think Yoko Kanno wrote it for both Ranka and Sheryl. First part refers to Ranka, second part refers to Sheryl.

Eh, the a capella and duet are put together pieces of crap that sound like trash. :p

OST2 on the other hand kicked ass. :D

Was missing some pieces and songs though. :(

-Ep13 Alto with Ranka and Piano Neko theme- I was wrong it's on OST2

I didn't hear it on the leak. Where is it on OST 2?

  10. Can you logically explain to my why Alto would run over to Sheryl while yelling "WAIT SHERYL, I" after Sheryl said "Let's stop pretending to be lovers" and confess his love about Ranka? Do you realize that makes absolutely no sense? This is the same Alto who said he would no longer run away in episode 23, the same Alto who told Sheryl before the kiss that people can't fly alone, oh wait let me guess he's talking about Ranka *rolls eyes*

I'll gladly explain it. The whole scenario so it's clear.

Sheryl saw through Alto which explained why she said that Alto finally realized it now, "so they should stop pretending to be lovers." Alto was surprised by her words despite of how he intended to apply it to her which explained the "Wait, Sheryl I."

Sheryl kissed Alto and said don't say anything more. Alto's face changed from a surprised expression to a sullen one. He knew what she was talking about therefore he dropped it.

"No matter what you say, I know I won't be able to sing." -- Sheryl.

It was because if Alto went ahead and said he was serious, Sheryl will know it would be a lie. If Alto said he was sorry, it's rubbing salt on wound. No matter what Alto says, Sheryl knows where his heart lies and instead of feeling rejuvenated to sing, it will lessen her resolve to sing.

"Make sure to come back, okay Alto?" -- Sheryl.

Translation: Don't die. Be careful. [No 'promise me' this time? ^_^ ]

I saw sadness in Alto's eyes but he didn't say anything. Shame on me for ever thinking this person was dense.

"Remember, a woman like this doesn't come very often." --Sheryl.

Translation: You don't know what you're missing! It's your loss, but we're still friends.

    Alto smiled and agreed.

Now to solidify the blurb I said up there. Listen to Sheryl later on.

"This is fine. I have no regrets. I'll just burn ablaze. All I have now are my songs and myself." -- Sheryl

She is fine like this. She has no regrets. If Alto and Ranka's resolution goes well in episode 25, Sheryl will say the same thing in episode 23. She "knew it all along." She is not expecting Alto to come back. The kiss was a goodbye kiss from her.

Alto OTOH is still as passionate when it comes to Ranka as he has always been. He never changed. His behavior in the battlefield especially when he saw her again spoke for itself. She was the reason why he chose to fight. It is no wonder he was passionate. Ranka and Alto has a score to settle. Round 1 goes to Ranka. How about round 2?

  11. After watching ther preview for episode 25 I believe those were

scenes of the credits for that episode... (Guess Kawamori don't want us to see anything from the Episode yet... perhaps the official page wont have any neither...). Does this mean that we will have RUNNER with those SDF style credits as well?

I hope my wish is fullfilled. I love "Runner" so much that I hoped to have the original or a new rendition of it in Frontier.

I wonder who will sing it? Megumi Nakajima or May'N? ^_^

It's even more suspicious that they have Yousei leak all over the internet while Anata no Oto full version's tightly secured, the same with how Blue Ether just came out of the, blue. Bobby has more chances of singing it than May'N. He already sang one of Ranka's jingles.

  12. 1 more episode to go and Sheryl fans (or ppl who think sheryl wil get the guy) out number people who think Ranka will by a whopping number of 80 vs 16.

I stand by my original vote of Ranka despite a "deceivingly" Sheryl scene on ep 24....but what can I say.... WE WILL SURVIVE!! :D

Won't it make you feel like special if out of the whooping 80 sheryl votes, the 16 ranka votes beat them flat out  I think that'll be funny. Peace peace peace.

  13. I was really looking forward to the song that Sheryl would be singing....

but I'm disappointed they reused the same animation from the first ep and just gave Sheryl a recolor. It's just a bit too obvious since they use the same sequences in the opening too

    -_-

In watching one of the raws, the strike from Brera went through the wing of Alto's plane. The passenger area looked like it was intact. What isn't clear is what happend when Alto's plane spiraled towards "Ranka-holo." When he had gone through it earlier, he was in some other dimensional container or something. It's possible that the plane we saw blew up no longer had Alto in it, setting up a Ranka/Alto encounter in the hive consciousness.

That's more likely it. The scene that we were shown today will turn out to be not the entire scene and they'll elaborate it next episode. I also expected Yousei to be sung but was also disappointed. Sheryl might sing it next time or never.

  14. Here's my attempt:

    that's life (kikameki?) /

    alto's dream /

    sheryl's thoughts /

    ranka's dreams /

sora wo kake (something about the sky) /

    next time, "anata no oto"

Instead of dreams, it's 'Ranka's song will fly/leap through the sky.' Something similar. Good good cliffhanger. It ended with me having a nonchalant taste to it, but this more or less proves that the last episode will be astounding.

Who wants to take a bet that sheryl's earring will make Alto transmit his sound to Ranka and wake her up? :)

  15. I think

the scene of Alto and Klan isn't as complicated as some make it to be. It is very straight to the point. Alto chose to protect Frontier over Ranka--the girl he joined SMS for. It's it in his flashbacks. To fight---Ozma flashback. To protect---a flashback of Ranka. Alto said that if Vajra is just going to use Ranka as a tool to kill everyone, then he will kill her himself. This is why Klan said, "is that your love?"

It was revealed that Sheryl all along knew that this is how things are. She always knew that there was something between Alto and Ranka---something that was hinted in 5, 10, 11, especially 14 when Alto set her aside for Ranka.

But wolfx, you may be onto something. Klan and Michael loved each other, yet, Kawamori screwed it up for the sake of emotional impact. What more for his main pairing? He will no doubt screw it up like he had never screwed anything up before.

  16. Alto's frustrations in the previous episode have to do with being so misunderstood. Ozma paints a reason about "protecting women" because he's "a man" that explains why he flies. Ozma talks about "being a man" from that perspective, which is something Alto finds objection to.

In this episode I think KlanKlan was trying to place her concept of "love" on him too and couldn't completely understand his decisions.

But Alto's concept of love may be very different. Maybe it's 'protection' or maybe it's loyalty, or maybe it's something unselfish... or something like "protecting Frontier, the home to all the things that he has loved and cared about."

Any man with a decent sense of righteousness will choose what is right before his own heart. I also see no wrong in what Alto had decided. If there is something I learned this episode, it's the fact that Alto

knows that Ranka was the reason he joined SMS. She's the real girl he wants to protect forever, yet protecting Sheryl and Frontier is the right thing to do. It is the "adult" thing to do. Alto is an adult. Ozma is a man. We put two and two together from their confrontation last week, and there you go. B))

I've always thought that Alto is not aware of the reason why he joined SMS, and he is just acting by mere instincts whenever he gets carried away for Ranka's sake. Michael knew that Alto was aware when he told him in 19 that "Being this dense is criminal". Who knew? Alto is not as dense as we all thought he was. So...that is quite a shocker.
