She didn't do "Ai obeteimasuka?" Would have thought that would be included since she did Tenshi no enougu.

While we would always prefer the original, or atleast I would anyway, managing to hear her sing it live during the TAF concert really brings out the range she could achieve.

Am pretty sure that the only 2 original Macross songs she did were Tenshi and Pilot.

Mind you, Im pretty crap at remembering specific songs sometimes ^^;

I wish I could justify going back to Tokyo so soon...but since I was just there last month, I really can't.

I hope they do another concert like this for the 30th Anniversary...THAT, I'd be there for.

Id like to think that there would be one in 2012 ;-) That would make a fitting final Minmei concert imo.

But then again, the fanclub is pushing Iijimas line that she WONT EVER do a concert like this again.

Wow... awesome....am speechless.....still coming down from the high of the Nakajima concert last night too. This will be the 4th time Ive seen her live this year! hehehe.

But after 20 years of waiting Ill FINALLY get to see Iijima on stage!

I went to Megumi Nakajima's "Sound Rasberry" concert tonight.

Couldnt see anyone from the boards that I knew there, although I did see one fellow gaijin rush in at the last moment.

Anyways, as a concert it was pretty good, especially for 4500 yen.

We got most of the usual suspects - Seikou Hikou, Anata no Oto, as well as My Boyfriends a Pilot and Tenshi no E no Gu (REALLY good version - I was getting Flashbacks to Flashback 2012, hehehe). The only song missing in action that was noticeable was Aimo.

Overall I'd say there was a 50-50 split of Macross songs and her own stuff, which is understandable now that Macross F is over. Megumi was a little more aggressive in her singing style than previously (its amazing how much she has matured as a live performer over the past 12 months) - I swear she can give May'n a run for her money as far as sass is concerned, and she does good renditions of both Minmay songs and Voices from Macross Pluss. She just keeps going from strength to strength. (She taught the audience a special dance too - Yes we were coached by Ranka in dance...hahaha). It will be interesting to see what May'n has been up to at her next concert in August....

The big reveal of the concert was the first ever performance of a new song for the Macross Frontier theatrical release in November. The song is called 'Sou da yo' (That's right!) and is (despite the name) a slower ballad. Of course it was written by Yoko Kanno and Maaya was apparently involved in it as well. So keep an eye (ear?) out for it at the end of the year!

And on a side note - those who had purchased Megumis new DVD got a pass to shake her hand at a meet and greet after the show. It was more meet than greet (the handlers gave each person no more than 3 seconds before herding them on) but it was just enough time to shake her had and thank her for the concert. I don't think I'll ever wash my hand again .... (eeew?)

A Western release? Of a Japanese concert? Let alone a concert featuring music which costs so much to license that the original series never makes it out of Japan?

Hope springs eternal, but then theres just outright sillyness.

Besides, if it gets a DVD release at all, why not just import? ;-)

AFAIK, Firebomber went to a chinese event (can't remember if it was Taiwan or Hong Kong) where they had a great big fanbase. I believe it was Taiwan.

I can see how it can stop scalpers but i still don't agree with this lottery system. But meh its Japan and i heard its quite common for concerts.

Yeah its far from a great system and often forces people to joing various fanclubs just to stand a better chance of being selected. But considering the size of the fanbase and the sheer number of people here in Japan, its probably as fair as the system can get given the circumstances.

Usually a Japanese address/contact details/credit card (sometimes) are required to go in the draw, so its not particularly gaijin friendly (Some sites wont even let you register if your name is in English). Then again, its not an international event really. Its a Japanese event and the focus is on the Japanese fans.

Certainly causes a lot of problems if you dont live in Japan, unfortunately.

First Yoko Kanno concert and now this. I have to say that this year is very good if it goes about some great shows.

Now the only hope for me is to wait for a DVD with this concert. Well, if it will be ever released on DVD…

Well, while theres no guarantee that it will come to DVD (after all, the last big Macross concert in 2007 didnt), at least its all music from shows by the same license holder, so it has a far better chance of being released than the Yoko Kanno one does IMO.

More than a little crazy - first the Mac F concerts, then the YK concert and now this.

At least theres two performances this time and they are being held ot Makuhari Messe which is a HUGE convention center. Hopefully getting in shouldnt be too difficult.

Well, since I started this thread I suppose I kindof have an obligation to put some thoughts down.

First, lets get the negatives out of the way. There was no Kiseki no Umi. There was no Triangular. There was no Lithium Flower, despite the fact that Scott Mathew was there. And, in my opinion, there was a bit too much Macross F and not enough Maaya.

But all of the above complaints come with one caveat – the concert was not about Maaya or Scott Mathews. It was not for Mac F fans or Bebop afns or GitS:SAC fans.

No, the concert was by Kanno, for Kanno, about Kanno. It was her moment to shine, a moment only made possible due to the overwhelming mainstream commercial success of the Mac F OSTs. So huge was this success that the powers that be at Bandai, Victor Entertainment, Geneon, etc allowed her not only to do music from her most popular works live, they also allowed footage from said series to be played as well. This in itself was a huge thing since companies dont normally cooperate on that kind of stuff here.

But anyways, the show was about Kanno. From her initial appearance rising out of the ground in the red leather coat that the Seatbelts live recordings in 2001 made famous; sprinting from the piano mid-song to reveal the Warsaw Philharmonic in the back stage; dancing around in a chicken suit while stealing a cats tail; to revealing herself as Gabriela Robin to the audience without warning or explanation – this was Kanno's show.

She toyed with the audience, faking them out several times over – starting with the intro chanting from Dance of Curse only to switch into a Turn A Gundam track before changing to Macross Plus and then, finally, back to Dance of Curse. Major singers did backing vocals, some did covers that were completely different to their past works (Nakajima with Voices), while others just sang the main chorus 6 times and nothing else (Aquarion).

Many of her most popular songs were shortened and chained into medleys. Why? Because this was her music and she was saying “try hearing it like THIS.” In fact, the majority of the songs were so intertwined that it would be next to impossible to seperate them for any sort of CD release.

In short, it was Kanno at a stunning creative peak, performing on multiple levels. This made for a concert that was just as much a performance as it was a recital.

And it was absolutely brilliant. A once-in-a-lifetime kind of event.

I wont list set lists here. Others have far better memories for stuff like that (and Im amazed that anyone could remember ALL the songs played while also taking the time to groove along). I will, however, list some of my personal standout moments:

-Hearing full versions of Blue, Call me, Call me, and What Planet is This? (complete with audience participation). Mai Yamane was a brilliant spark of continuous energy.

-Maaya singing chorus for Origa.

-Anything by Origa – absolutely brilliant voice. As powerful live as in the studio.

-Nakajima doing a cover of Voices that was VERY close to the original version.

-May'n doing possibly the best live version of Diamond Crevasse ever.

Steve Conte and Mai Yamane doing Rain together. Finally both versions rolled into one!

-Seeing Maaya do Yakusoku wa iranai in person.

-Conte and Maaya duet (complete with surprise ending)

-Kanno revealing the Warsaw Philharmonic.

-And of course, Kanno singing Moon. No explanation given, none asked for, none necessary.

Aha, so YOU are the guy he was referring to. Its a good think you had a ticket handy because that twat booked his plane ticket before even knowing if he could get into the concert...sigh...kids these days.

Im heading out to meet a friend from Aus who is flying in for the concert tonight. I think I'm going to take him to Eva 2.0 tomorrow. Its my 2nd time like a Kanno concert, seeing Eva on the big screen is one of those things you can usually only do in Japan ;-)

Heres hoping they have some decent merch at the concert on Tuesday - some Tshirts and posters are what Im after so fingers crossed.

I saw Tokyo Jihen at Zepp Tokyo about a year and a half ago, and it was a similar situation. Clearly, someone managed to get something through, since one of the songs from that night showed up on YouTube, but I have no idea how they did it.

Yeah, and yoou have to wonder how sucky it would be to stand there trying to film instead of actually enjoying the concert, you know?

Well, they are pretty harsh on photography in concerts here. At the Mac F concert I even had to conceal a camera to take pics of cosplayers in the lobby. Theres usually a bag check and sometimes a metal detector at these kinds of events from experience.

But still, you never know...

Not to sound like a wet blanket, but having already been to the Mac F concert, Im hoping for a wider range of Kannos works with this one. The Warsaw Philharmonics presence points to a lot of Escaflowne and Turn A Gundam imo. I think 10-20% Mac F tunes overall would strike the right balance.

Oh, and for anyone not going, jump on Amazon Japan and grab the May'N concert DVD. Its the closest youll get to a Macross Concert - awesome little disc that even features a guest duest with Basara!

But buy it please, dont DL it. Theres little enough live Macross stuff as it is - we need to support it as much as possible.

Who knows, maybe we will get more Kanno or Mac concerts in the future!
