  1. I posted here a little over a year ago about my successful attempt at de-yellowing my vf-25 dx. I basted it using salon care 40 cream in sunlight, enclosed in a transparent bin. Worked brilliantly. Since then, the valk was placed on a shelf nowhere near direct sunlight. However, I am sad to report that after a year the yellowing has returned just as bad as it originally was. Areas that were not yellowing before have now started darkening as well. This is a real bummer. Wish there was a permanent solution. :(

  2. So.. I have an older yf29 Alto that I got for a sweet deal some time ago. It was a little worn but still ok. Today I picked it up for the first time in several months and the legs tore apart at the waist joint. Looks like the plastic basically degraded and crumbled.. on a side note I was kind surprised that the legs, as weighty as they are, are held by such a small plastic joint. Seems to work for the 25 and 27 molds though so what do I know..

Anyway, for those of you that have a lot of experience with the 29 toys, do any of the Alto reissues have improved quality? Are the non Alto versions of the 29 better? Looking to replace mine. Thanks for any advice!!

  3. So, I've used the Salon Care 40 creme on three separate occasions and wanted to share my experience. All three valks were placed in direct sunlight after application. The difference each time was the covering. First time was was no covering. Second, parts wrapped in cling wrap. Third, piece was placed in a clear bin covered with cling wrap.

The first attempt was with a YF-29 Alto that had had noticeable yellowing on white areas. No noticeable discoloration on the red. I applied SC40 to the exposed areas and left in the sunlight as is. After 5 hours, I noticed discoloration did improve. I flipped it over and repeated. In all took 24 hours of exposure and multiple treatments. No damage to surface, tampo or any paint. Discoloration effectively removed.

My second attempt was with a VF-1J Max. Significant discoloration. Looks like it was left in battroid mode in front of a window. Blue chest was much darker than the rest of the blue pieces. Pretty much looked dark green. I decided to disassemble the valk to expose as much of the discolored surfaces as possible. I applied the SC40 to each piece and wrapped them individually in cling wrap. Left in the sun, expecting a slow process and checked after 6 hours. To my horror, the reaction was much faster probably due to the cling wrap. There were splotches of faded blue, lighter than the regular color. In addition, the cling wrap left some streaks of glossiness on some surfaces. Some areas of discoloration still remained while completely gone in others. I decided to call it a loss and stop and never do this ever again.

Some time later, I purchased a VF-25 Alto v2 on ebay, where the description said "Excellent S- Condition". I bought it for what I felt was a decent price. However, when I received it, it had obvious discoloration all over. Like the VF-1, looks like it was left in battroid in front of a window. Other than that, it was in great shape. After complaining to the seller, he was very fair about it and I got a significant partial refund. Needless to say, I busted out the SC40. This time, I put in in a bin and covered the top with cling wrap. I also put foil on the bottom to keep the light bouncing around. I kept it in fighter, treated the top, intending to flip it over later. Interesting thing happened, after 4 hours, about 80% of the discoloration was gone, even on the bottom where I hadn't applied SC40. My thought was maybe the vapor of the SC40 trapped in the bin affected those areas as well?? Anyway. I retreated and left it out for another 4 hours. After a total of 8 hours most of the parts were completely white again. There was stubborn yellowing on one of the wings where the discoloration was the worst. After another 4, I would say the discoloration was about 5% visible. I will probably try one more treatment to get ther rest out.

    Hope this was informative.

@Arbit - those wings look great!

@Hiryu -- looking great so far!  I desperately need some of that Tamiya curved surface tape!  Can you post a pic of it?!

Sure. Here are some pics I found on the web. It has a stretchy, plasticy feel to it. It will allow you to make some pretty tight curves depending on which size tape you use. The adhesion is really good. The paint lines look really sharp after removing the tape. No issues with seepage.

  5. Anyone else attempt the hasegawa vf31-j/c kits? Between matching the blue paint, the masking hell and rage inducing decals around the cockpit area, this is probably the most challenging kit I've tried. That said, my range of experience isn't too broad. Mostly Hase valks. I am enjoying it though and learning a lot from the experience.

Oh, and thank you Tamiya for the curved surface masking tape.

For sure! I was looking up some Tamiya colors last night and found shades of grey and a dark blue-grey that should work wonders for this kit! B))

Right now the 31A is semi-assembled & being held together by tape & gravity. LOL  The most insane thing to assemble was the pilot, otherwise your quality Hasegawa kit. B))

Absolutely gorgeous. Just got mine in the mail as well. Who says you need forward swept wings to be more "heroic"? Kairos is definitely my favorite Delta design. I'll probably turn mine into a red Miriya-ish variant.

According to Tochiro on the Speakerpodcast Hasegawa have announced that they will be kitting all of the valks from the Delta. So here's hoping.

The Wright Immelman VF-22 as well perhaps?

Banzai Hobby carries it, and I don't see discontinued anywhere...

And looking at it, it looks like the major difference is just the outer wing section and the paint/decals.

You could backdate the VF-31J to the A with a scratch built outer wing.

Tried to order from them. They ended up canceling my order because they didn't have any in stock. They seem to be one of those sourcing companies -- not sure if that's what you call it, where you order and they see if they can get it for you.

Dang.. I totally regret not jumping on the pre order. Didn't think these were going to fly off the shelves like the DXs. This variant is beautiful. Wish they would have used it for the main valk instead of the FSW. FSW is so played out imo.

Her voice was a bad decision for Walkure, in my honest opinion. It's a sentiment I've held since the beginning: her voice tends to drown out the other VAs/singers. Either she projects too much/doesn't know how to play with others, or the audio engineering/composing/mixing/etc. just didn't/doesn't know what to do with her. It's annoying to hear one of the nicer Walkure songs and her voice constantly forces its way to center stage.

I wonder if they intentionally wanted to make her stand out. In the show Mikumo basically walks into the group and stuns everyone and ultimately is revealed as the "Star Singer".

  10. So, like a lot of people, I was introduced to Macross via Robotech growing up. I've seen every other Macross show except SDFM and have never revisited Robotech. So I decided to finally sit down and watch SDFM for the first time. Here are a couple thoughts after getting through ~28 episodes.

    - I really got a sense of the youthfulness of the characters, particularly Hikaru and Max. The fact that they were supposed to be young came across effectively through the voice actors as opposed to Robotech, where looking back I felt like they were all grown adults who acted like idiots at times. Hikaru is much more likable than "Rick".

    - I wish story telling was still done this way. It's a bit slower, but I feel more engaged and I feel like I know the characters better. Looking back at Frontier and Delta, they are so fast paced that things barely sink in.

    - OMG are Max and Milia's voice actors the same ones in M7? Awesome!

    - Is it me or did the art/animation get really bad towards the middle of the series and then pick up again towards the end?

    - Protoculture actually makes sense now!! My world is blown! The context finally makes sense for the other Macross shows. Now I'm just anticipating getting the whole "SDF2" mess cleared up.

    - I'm really appreciating the various mecha in the show, destroids, etc, even the Zentradi stuff. Glaugs rule! I love different variants/schemes for the VF-1. Seems like now the focus is just getting out the next valk evolution and calling it "better" ala the stats treadmill.

    - Kamjin cracks me up with his reckless ways. As a child, I just remember "Khyron" being a less funny a-hole.

    That's it for now.

  11. So, I've spent the past month listening to all the Walkure albums. As many problems as I have with Delta, the music is not one of them. The fact that the upcoming movies will bring new Walkure music is already a win.

I have to say, Junna's voice blows me away. She is is in another class than the others. Not to take away from the rest of the group. Being able to sing, voice act and sing in character at that level is amazing in it's own right. #junnarocksme

I can't get past episode 5 of delta. It just doesn't appeal to me but not all of the macross series do. I was not a fan of M7 or Zero either.

M+ is life and Frontier was not perfect but very enjoyable overall.

I hope they make something closer to Frontier and M+ this time around.

This is how I feel as well. Although M7 grew on me as kind of a stand alone show, it was was nowhere near what I would have expected as a show following up plus.

my concern with the decal is color matching the blue and gray that you would use to paint the plastic.

Yes, this. I think I'm more excited about the 31A kit. That one comes with Arad's skull logo decal too which is cool. I also think this would look great in a Max paint scheme ala his VF-22 from M7, replacing the gray with that sweet light blue.

  14. I'm more of a YF-19/VF-19A fan so I'm not all that familiar with the details of the Kai, but is the neck supposed to be exposed like that in fighter mode? From what I remember of Mac7, I always thought that this area was flush with the top of the chest. I remember the Yamato Kai prototype being like that too.. Is there a cover piece that they forgot to put on for those HLJ pics?

    edit: here's a comparison
