  1. Nadia was definately far more of a proto-Evangelion, hell, it even has Adam. I'd love to see Anno take a new stab at Nadia, without any of the meddling that hampered the TV series (island episodes, africa episodes, etc). Despite all the sabotage, it still stands as a beautiful series.

Maybe so, but I don't think there is any denying of the proto-Asuka!

Other then that some common themes (but which show up in all of Anno's work), the concept of "service". There's more, but not anymore then you'd expect from any two works in the same genre from the same director and screenwriter.

But there is no denying Proto-Asuka in all her glory, who begat Asuka, by playing her mother in Eva!

No seriously every Gainax offical crossover I've ever seen has pit Jung against Asuka, I'm sure that at least is intentional.

  2. Yeah, let's totally discuss this in a thread about Bubblegum Crisis on an anime forum.

Sorry, just posting the correction here for all to see who might be interested. Sadly tangental conversation is a part of life, wether the internet gods like it or not.

But yes back to the Bubblegum Crisis, anime haircolors or natural for the actresses which would you prefer?

  3. That must be why T2 is my Mom's favorite movie along with Green Fried Tomatoes.

you mean Fried Green Tomatoes! Based on the book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (movie is a basterdization of the book, even if the screenplay was written by the author of the book.. the Ruth/Idgie Lesbian thing for example is way more realistically handled in the book, and skirted around in the movie).

  4. Though he does list Gunbuster as number two, even if he goes on about the characters being some prototype for Evangelion...

Actually... there were themes that carry over from Gunbuster to Eva, and people do generally view Jung as the "Proto-Asuka", interesting fact Jung's Seiyuu voices Asuka's mother, I think that was intentional. But that and a view general themes, are all that they share in common.

  5. As Alan Moore said in The Ballad of Halo Jones, "Whatsamatter? Don't you LIKE girls?" :p

Is there anything wrong with liking both? :p

    Me likey...

Just seems that most of the movie-going audience doesn't quite as much. For every "Underworld" you have, what, maybe 2 dozen action movies with male leads? I'd rather spend two hours staring at Kate Beckinsale than Bruce Willis, but I don't know if box office numbers back that up for most of the people buying movie tickets.

Ballad of Halo Jones... wow, I think I read that when I was about 10... been a long time.

Actually, it might be due to the fact that there's a lot of girls who will let themselves get dragged to action movies just for the eye-candy of the male star. I know my Mom only wanted to see Crystal Skull because she thinks Harrison Ford is cute etc. Another good example is the convo in Densha Otoko where Hermes' friend as asking about Densha.

"Oh, he's like Tom Cruise, the last Samurai"

    "Actually, he's Japanese"

    "ah Watanabe Ken then?"

    "he's not totally unlike him"

    "oh so nothing alike then"

do we believe this girl went to see Last Samurai for for any other reason then hot guys?

So you loose on a potential market segment, guys will come for the action regaurdless of if there is bobbies or not. Some girls will too, but the straight girls out there who do not like explosions will want something else to entertain them while they are on dates with their boyfriends who do like explosions.

(the preceding post is a generalization, there are always exceptions but the marketing companies go for the generalizations).

  6. BGC pacing so... eight stand alone episodes in a single movie? The 2040 designs (aside from the re used hard suits) were painful.

I liked the 2040 designs, but found BGC more fun to watch. *shrugs*

Except that Mospeada is owned by an entirely different company, so it's a pretty big jump in logic to assume Mospeada will see a live action project as well.

Yeah, though, concievably it could be done as a cash-in It'd be interesting to see Tat Pro and HG pool resources to get a Tokusatsu produced and then do some Disney/Saban style editing to make an english Robotech version.

I somehow doubt anything like that will happen.

  7. Speaking of talking out of one's rectum, has there been any hate websites pop up over this new film?

I mean Trekkies used to be the benchmark for obsessive, nitpicking fandom. Is there any websites like pineisnotkirk.com or jtreksucks.com or anything like that?

There has to be some ridiculously critical website about the new Star Trek film, harshly criticizing J.J. Abrams and Co for some minor transgression that no one cares about. I'm in the mood for a good laugh :)

this is pretty old, but is it good enough for you? http://shatneriskirk.ytmnd.com/

  8. Wow. Way to overreact. You might want to check your Japanophilia at the door, because what I said is the truth. While Japan has an impressive film history, it's gone down the toilet in the last 15-20 years due to a variety of reasons. Too much time is spent trying to imitate Hollywood blockbusters and what you end up with is a lot of derivative garbage that looks like it's trying to be a big budget film but without the budget, actors who can't act and commercial film releases that look like TV shows.

I don't think this is quite fair, there are a number of good films that have come out in the past 15 years from Japan, to name a few Love Letter (the 95) movie, Shall We Dansu? (96), Shimotsuma Monogatari (2004)... I would say that the Death Note movies were pretty good for what they were, I could name many more enjoyable films. Just because something "looks like it's TV" or has a low budget dosn't mean it's bad. Sure Hollywood blows away the competion (Titanic and ET being two of the highest grossing movies in Japanese box office history after a pair of Miyazaki films), but there have been quite a few good emotional dramas and art films within the last 15 years.

This isn't so called "Japanophilia" talking, I watch films from other countries too, and I admit there is a lot of rubbish in Japan, but there are gems there too if you care to look for them.

P.S. Roger, kaiju and tokusatsu movies don't count as "good" movies.

Not so sure about that, I'd say at least the original Gojira was a masterpeice and Gojira Final Wars, was not a bad a movie either. Godzilla final Wars had the balls at least to try and tell a story in which the the big G was only a minor element... yeah it was mostly a (actually high budget for Japan about 10 Mill) action flick, with martial arts and mutants and crap. But it had a decent story for that kind of film and was just a ton of fun. So I think there can be good things done with Giant monsters if you try.

  9. Maybe because it's an example of how giant humanoid aliens who fight humans flying fighter planes has been portrayed in hollywood in the past? :)

oh god, I blocked most of that movie out... I remember them raiding fort knox and wondering why they didn't see the red line marking the state border when they crossed over.

How big were the aliens in it again? I thought they were taller then humans but not Zentraedi sized.

  10. Well, when abrams says things like "It is a brand new thing inspired by..." I don't think people should expect a 100% continuity faithful movie. DS9 and TNG already showed they're perfectly capable or reproducing the sets and look and feel of TNG. And if it wasn't some sort of reboot, I would have expected Abrams or the studio to correct all those film sites that have been calling this one.

Well essentially my understanding is that it is and is not a reboot at the same time, because we have characters who are from the next gen era (this romulan and Ambassador Spock) travelling back in time and mucking with things. Their stories are uneffected by the mucking because they traveled back in time, but everything else is thrown into a rebooted timeline.

We have Romulans fighting the Federation less then 100 years before Kirk becoming Captain of the Enterprise? = Divergent timeline

If they actually see a Romulan's face = Divergent timeline

So yes it's a reboot in that sense, why would they deny it... it opens the stage for an all new TOS era series if they want, but from what I've read in interviews and stuff they are taking care to pay attention to the continuity for things that matter and even incorporated things from some of the books like Spock's World.

  11. Are audiences too sophisticated these days for human-like aliens? In canon Robotech, if I'm not mistaken, there's no reason the Robotech Masters (and their creation the Zenraedi) have nearly identical gene structurs to humans right? It's just one big universal happy coincidence? Wouldn't audiences have a hard time these days buying off on something like that? I'm guessing if the aliens in this movie are going to be anything like the Zentraedi than the writers are going to have to come up with a reason why they so closely resemble man.

Actually depends on which verison of the Robotech Canon, they do talk in the Macross Saga about potentially having a comon ancestry... and in Macek's original plan for Robotech 3 the SDF-3 would have traveled back in time and the survivors would have eventually become the Robotech Masters.

  12. And the new enterprise doesn't look exactly like any previous enterprise, there are changes to every element... some, like the bridge and hull have extensive changes.

Yes and there are differences between the Pike Enterpise in both hull and interior to the Kirk Enterprise, and difference between the TV Enterprise and the movie era enterprise. So tacking on one more refit to the ship dosn't really bother me. (then again purely aesthetic changes in other franchises don't bother me either like the mecha redesign between Sakura Taisen and the remake Sakura Taisen Atsuki Chishio Ni (which made the second generation mecha, almost look like the 7th (or 9th depending if you count the two anime-only generations).

Anyway, using time-travel like I said it can be a sequal and reboot at the same time, from future-Spock's and the Romulan's perspective it's a sequal, cause he still lived out his original life, but from the perspective of the TOS cast, it's a splinter timeline/reboot.

In a way, again it's much like say Doctor Who, where the history of the Dalek's in particular acticvly got re-written a few times, or Legacy of Kain, where Blood Omen 2 only occured because of a time paradox caused in Soul Reaver 2.

  13. meh, from his quote it seems pretty obvious that Abram's take on this trek movie is like Singer's take on Superman Returns. Remain faithful to the original without being slavishly so and set it up for a new direction.

And while the designs may be retro, they're hardly TOS retro, completely different look and feel .

also, it's not just us here at MW calling this a reboot, every nearly every film media site is calling this a reboot.

I dunno, seems like it is and it isn't... since it has Spock from the current universe travelling back in time it is somewhat of a sequal, that sets up a new splinter timeline. There are continuities that have a lot more twists then that with time travel (*cough* Legacy of Kain, Transfromers, Doctor Who *cough*) where the timeline gets re-written semi-regluarly.

Also, Superman Returns was designed to slot in perfectly with Superman II, the whole Superman slept with Lois then erassed her memory after leading to her confusion with the kid etc. (from the lester cut not the donor cut).

To me it dosn't seem like a reboot because, they actually would not let Shatner play future Kirk since he died on screen (despite Shatner's really wanting to do it, and have them validate his coming back to life novels to make it work), so they obviously care about the extended continuity, but are using a similar idea to Enterprise's Time Cold War, to circumnavigate some of the baggage.

And lastly, why should the Enterprise look exactly like it does in TOS? From the pilot/Spock Court-martial episode we know the ship underwent at least one major refit before Kirk became the Captain, So the look is justified I think.

  14. Ironic or hypocritical? All things Georgish are grand but don't you dare touch my classic Trek? ;)

Honestly, I don't see why people get so out of joint about this particular case of a reboot, since all the classic stuff is still around. There's a case to be made against Lucas, I suppose, considering that he won't make the classic versions available, but that's not the case with Trek. Are people lamenting that there won't be anything more added to the Trek continuity they've loved so far? Do they think a reboot somehow invalidates everything that already happened? To me, that would be like saying "woe is me, now I can never watch From Russia With Love again, because it's not part of the new continuity so it never happened!" I mean it's all fiction... none of it ever happened.

Perhaps I need to be more fanatical... :p

Actually Lucas did put the original theatrical versions of the movies (even sans "episode IV" title on the first one) as extras on a more recent DVD set so they are available.

On the other hand, is there a an undedited DVD version of TOS? or just the version with the redone CG special effects and crap? I don't care much one way or another.

And I guess people like living universes... *shrugs*
