  1. Oh wow. I saw that VF-19 on Turbosquid years ago, and thought it was pretty great. I can't believe that it was his, and pilfered for profit, no less! Turbosquid has a pretty bad rep. Not only are users uploading stuff they don't own, apparently, but they also pay the authors (or burglars) a fraction of what some of the other sites pay.

  2. I like the out of focus Megaroad. I love the clothing and its coloring. I too am not a fan of the stars. I love analog art... who thought we'd ever have to say something like that? Working with markers/pens is a dying tradition.

I don't like Minmay's lipstick -- it makes the shape and angle of her mouth feel a little off.

I figured I do something besides gushing over the work, since I think it's pretty awesome. Maybe some feedback about what isn't working will make the next one even better?

  3. ProTools is the way to go for audio. And I believe ProTools LE is affordable. I don't know that I would record directly in Media Composer, and I've got no idea how limited Avid Studio is in comparison, though I must assume somewhat. But Avid owns ProTools, and the professional workflow uses both packages. Likewise, professionally, most people use ProTools or Logic in conjunction with FCP, though you can record directly into FCP. As for Adobe, there's Adobe Soundbooth and Adobe Audition, which integrate really well into Premiere. Then there's Sonar, which I used to use when I was in music, and when we did the soundtrack for Wulin Warriors. Ugh.

  4. Pondering upon Macross once again and after watching the second Frontier movie I came to the realization that the true villians of the story were essentially humans. So I'm going back to the drawing board for my villains for Macross Delta. But that's not too bad as I think I'm going to concentrate on finishing Odyssey first. In fact I'll definitely finish that one first.

I also bring to you this little nugget of fanfiction I found on Deviant Art, called Macross 2012-Insurrection. Not the greatest story ever but the writer seems to know most of his lore. What do you think?

I wouldn't feel too bad about. Frankly, as much as there was cool animation, music, and plenty of winks at fans in the Frontier movies (particularly the second one), the story was kind of a train wreck. There were a couple of nice character moments, but all in all... not the best bit of Macross storytelling. In fact, I think that if one had watched those movies without watching the series, it would barely make any sense, nor would there be much of a point to what did. Don't get me wrong, those concerts were cool, and the dogfights were sweet, and Alto and Ranka and Sheryl all seemed to act a little more mature here and there, but as far plot, and as far as story beats, it was a mess. I think this thing should get relegated to Macross II's alternate dimension. Or become an in-universe work of fiction.

Which leads me to this point: it wouldn't be derivative if you made another story where humans were the antagonists.

What I'd personally like to see is something more along the lines of a Miyazaki antagonist. That is, somebody who opposes the protagonists, and presents a very real threat, but who has a well-reasoned, and legitimate point of view. Bad guys that want to rule the universe are corny and simplistic usually. And actually, I felt like Frontier (in both versions) couldn't decide how to handle its antagonists. If Grace O'Connor and the Galaxy Hivemind truly BELIEVE that the future of humanity is as a collective consciousness, and it's not about "enslaving others to become their drones" then they're an interesting antagonist with a full-blown philosophy. If we take it a step further, and the Galaxy hivemind is ON to something, then we have a really interesting antagonist.

Take for instance, the 1996 film "The Rock". The primary antagonist, General Francis X. Hummel, as played masterfully by Ed Harris, is a sympathetic character with a cause you want to see succeed. His methods are problematic, but his ultimate goal is something you can pretty much get behind. This is one of the things that elevates that movie above its peers. The shower room ambush then becomes tragic, because up until that point, it was possible that things could have been defused and everybody might have gone home happy.

If you were to craft a story where humans -- regular, every day humans, not megalomaniacs or lunatics or sociopaths -- were on the opposing side of humans -- regular every day humans -- then you could tell a story that not only made for Valk on Valk action, but could be very poignant. Remember, the best sci-fi shows us something about ourselves as humans now. That's my two cents worth.

  5. You should look into whether Avid Studio can export OMFs. If it can, then the software will be compatible with wide range of higher end software as well, meaning audio mixes could go back and forth between Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition, Adobe Soundbooth, Protools, Logic, or Final Cut Pro. That would be extremely flexible for you (and for me!)

That's a turn around of the mesh with some more wrinkles added to the suit. I have to redo the texture now. I had stayed home today to receive a package that I scheduled to be delivered. They called me after the scheduled time and said, "so, when do you want your package?" Uh, how about when I scheduled it to be delivered!? Sheesh. Anyway, at home with nothing but Aria (and BBMIOS) to worry about.

  7. Had a chance to spend a little time in 3ds today. I added some folds and wrinkles to Rafe Townsend's flight suit:

It's obviously not done. I'll have to add more gathers around the knees, as well as the belt and legs, and the back needs work.

I've modified the mesh a bit, so I'll have to redo the texture, and also the harness/collar piece is now being occluded by parts of the suit.

  8. Are you CURSED or something, Hik? I think you're cursed. My advice: sell one of your more awesome models and flip that money back into some software. Sure, models tend to at least hold value or appreciate, and that software will be worthless in seven months, but, your computer will thank you for it. And everybody here will thank you for it, too, because we'll get to see/hear new work! Do it for the MW kiddies!

    Or not.

  9. Haha. Yeah, right? I've got models that I'm like, why is this still unfinished? I've seen guys bang out the same thing in 24 hours. Then I remember, oh yeah, everybody has different priorities and different responsibilities. There was certainly a time when I could spend all day every day on this stuff, and I'm sure there will be again. There are other times (like these past three months) when I haven't opened 3ds max once. Although, to be fair, I could have. And perhaps, today, after I deliver this color grade I will.

    Perhaps I will.

  10. Thanks for the feedback! I'm thinking about posting a revised version of Do You Remember Motown, but I'm also getting ready to maybe take a stab at another story, this time a little closer to the beaten path...

  11. I think the modeling work is pretty good. Nice detail. But I feel like there are certain elements working against your overall design. Obviously, the thing has a very big barrel chest, which is not necessarily bad. What feels strange to me is that the arms feel mounted low, and the upper arms and shoulders/deltoid segments feel really small in relation to the chest. It gives the robot a sort of "fat man with tiny arms" appearance, even though the lower arms and hands are fine. Also, the head feels a bit large. Perhaps not so much as a human, but we're at least used to the slightly more heroic proportions of giant robots (which tend to have at LEAST superhero proportions, where a character is about 7 or more heads high, if not crazy G1 Transformers proportions with tiny heads on massive bodies).

That said, I love seeing original designs, and this is going in a direction we haven't really seen yet, so I look forward to seeing more.

  12. Milia: "Listen to me, Chlore! The Zentraedi are living with the Micronian race in peace now..."

That's what I was referring to.

Yeah, he's right. I heard it too. I forgot that that was a Robotechism, since Micron/Micraan/Miclone is Macross. Also, it would be nice to know what the intent of Micraan was. Was it meant to be like american "micron" like a "micron telescope" or was it a shifted pronunciation of "miclone" like a conflation of small and clone, since the Zentraedi are known to be grown in cloning tanks traditionally. It's always been something that nagged at the back of my head. What is the intention of that word?!?!?!?!?!? I DON'T KNOW, DAMMIT!
