  1. Graham, this in an interesting question. Before we had kids, i always envisioned passing all my Macross stuff down to them eventually. And of course part of that involved viewing all the macross related goodness, SDF, robotech (ducks for cover), and M+.

But then along the way, we had twin girls! So the question becomes do I still get to do all this stuff, i mean, are they going to really be interested in space soap opera with giant transforming mecha? Most girls i know aren't - and my wife is about as girlie-girl as they get, so I have nightmares about Roy's 1S being dressing in Barbie clothes if the girls ever got their hands on my 1/48's!

On the other hand, i always thought that the macross mecha (and G1 transformers) were great because they were so creative - i wonder how many engineers were inspired by each of these toy lines to go into that field, so because of this i would give the girls at least a bandai to play with - who knows what it will inspire them to do!

Another issue that i have is that exposing them to anime will get them into cosplay. Last thing i need is for the girls to start dressing in skimpy sailer whatever outfits and have the anime boys ogling them.

And another point that gets me quite worried about exposing the girls to anime is the way girls are represented in anime. In Robotech, at least the women (Lisa, claudia, Millia) were strong women. In other anime, i.e. Ninja Scroll, women tend to be portrayed as weak and needing help - that's not the message i need conveyed to my girls - they need to kick ass, not wait for some boy to do it for them. Even M+ had this problem, with both Lucy and Myung being useless and being little more than objects to Isamu and Guld. And don't even get me started on hentai - now THAT crap gives me nightmares.

Any other folks out there with girls have an opinion on this?

  2. OK, since you guys brought this up, it reminded me of something that's always bugged me about M+. The fact that Isamu and Guld pretty rip up massive chunks of city during their dog-fight.

That could not have gone over too well.

    Just my randon $0.02 :p

  3. wicked ... i can put my bachelor of mathematics degree to some good use...

let X = the number of boys

let Y = the number of girls

    we know X / (X+Y) = .4

Solve for X to get X = (2/3)Y by multiplying both sides by the denominator (X+Y).

    we know X + 3 = Y

so plug in the value of X we derived above to get (2/3)Y + 3 = Y

    and solve to get: Y = 9

    plug Y=9 back into X + 3 = Y to get X + 3 = 9 to get X =6

    So X = 6, Y = 9.

    check: X / (X+Y) = 6/15 = .4 and Y / (X+Y) = .6 and X +3 = Y

  4. I love the inconsistency at airports - at laguardia last week, i got id'ed using my work ID badge going through the security gate. I actually had my passport in my hand about to hand it to the security person, and she said 'no its ok - I can use that ID'. I actually sent an e-mail to Laguardia's general e-mail address asking it that was SOP. Haven't heard anything yet. What a joke.

  5. What the hell?

Why are ppl bashing Yamato so much? Bottom line is this, you don't like it don't buy it.

At the time, we all loved the M+ toys because 1) they were M+ toys and 2) someone actually had the guts to make some good high quality M+ VFs. And yes, they are high quality. They had good articulation, good metal content and aside from a few QC issues, they are quite solid - all four of my M+ valks are still in great shape (19, 19A, 11 and 21 - All first version valks!

And at the time, we all loved the 1/60 line. We praised the sculpt and although some ppl did bemoan the detachable legs, we agreed that the lack of swingbars was nice. So I feel that comparing the 1/60s to an $8 transformer from wal-mart is quite unfair.

As for the QC issues of the 1/48, well, given the fact that they are far more complex than any other VF, I think the amount of QC issues encountered has been pretty good... I've had four, and the only problem I've had is a cracked part when I forced it in the wrong direction.

And its not like Yamato has just kept releasing the same buggy product. There have been improvements on nearly every version.

    Rant over.
