Seems like a terible waste of time, and wasn't the video altered for RT as well? The Animeigo release can be found for a rediclously cheap amount.

I'm leaving my bit up. I haven't downloaded everything yet, but hopefully I can help out a little bit, at least until boinger is back up. I've been up and down for the last week or so, but always up unless I gotta take my laptop to school.

I always figured it was just something very low budget. The "special effects" we saw in the film could have been, at least in theroy, very easy, as well as cheap, to do. It could also have been a morale effort for the survivors/crew.
