  1. That is a neat technique. But it would look strange in larger scale. I would say that the effect is it makes a 3D model look like cell shading. Which, when I think about it, might look awesome on Anime subjects. Most aircraft model builders try to get metal on their models. This would surely be something to stand out from the crowd.

  2. I have a 1lb. batch of QSI purple silicone RTV. On the catalyst bottle the mix ratio is listed as "100 parts base material to 10 parts catalyst". Isn't this the same ratio as 10 to 1? Or, is 10 parts catalyst the minimum amount to be used, even in small batches. I have been having trouble getting the stuff to cure when I mix up small amounts. I have made molds with other brands of material, so I understand the basics of measuring, mixing, pouring, silicone. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

It is the same ratio. But here's the thing...it's by mass not volume. So you need a very precise scale in order to do small volumes.

  3. There are SO many books on building and painting model aircraft that you shouldn't have to go through the pain us self-trained builders had to. But you learn more from mistakes than you would think.

  4. I was looking into a dimension Uprint. it prints is UBS plastic so The models would be pretty tough.

I think this machine is excellent for making parts that are mechanically functional. But I don't think the plastic used is very sandable.

The layer thickness of 0.010" is way too fat for what I would want yoo. That's just like layering up styrene sheets by hand.

I noticed that a lot of the sample photos are fuzzy.

  5. I wouldn't mind taking a stab at some sort of aftermarket update eventually; I think that the fixed flaps/slats on the control surfaces are begging for a correction. As for photo-etch, the last time I did some was 10 years ago and it was very, very pricy (mind you, it was stainless steel.) That having been said, if I can find a supplier with a better price, I'm all for it.

I haven't had it done in a while but it wasn't too terrible for a sheet of 11" X 14".
