Last I heard as space odyssey/operas go Macross borrowed from Star Trek, Starship Troopers, Battlestar Galactica, & of course Gundam (being that originally it was supposed to be a Gundam parody, just saying). Yes, it innovated transforming realistic robotics but a group of people going off into space was not a very original idea..

I'd be the first to admit that Tom threw a little cold water on me about Carl's participation in Robotech Academy but I still like to see this still get done. It sounds like they're revisiting the Southern Cross and showing more different factions of the Robotech Masters ala the Children of Zor..
-
Thanks Tom. I appreciate your honesty and candor..
Here's something a little off topic but I just had to share..A rare Carl Macek Sentinels interview..

Hey Apollo Leader,
Sorry I haven't been around lately... I do lurk from time to time.
I was actually at the Robotech panel at Anime Expo (not participating in it, obviously)
I have found this entire thread to be fascinating...
Robotech Academy... hmmmmmm, where to begin?
Please start at the beginning. As former member of HG maybe you have some insight on Robotech Academy?..
-
When it comes to re-designing old Macross characters well..They already done it..Rick & Lisa were redesigned for not only Sentinels but also Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles. HG already cross that bridge the rest is a moot point..

That's the fun part... they're ALL Harmony Gold's. Just at varying levels of "revisionist history" over the years. The one that I'm referring to is the oldest version, back before they started in with the retroactive arse-covering. Their original claim was that the Tatsunoko-supplied writers couldn't get their heads around the Robotech version of things, and tried to address the problem by relating everything to the original shows instead.
Every version of every failure story ultimately gets progressively revised by them to make them look better and displace blame to other parties. A few years ago they changed their tune from "Robotech: the Untold Story did poorly with test audiences" to "the test audiences loved it but the distributor didn't".
Kinda makes me wonder how they're going to try and dress the Robotech Academy failure up. They almost always tart the flops up with something about how it was a fantastic idea brought down by circumstance. It's gonna be hard to put a bow on a lack of support from the backers in the likely event they don't break $500k (and projections suggest they might not even break $300k!). Will they blame Creavision for not faithfully executing Carl's vision? Will they blame the backers for not supporting it enough? Or will they actually admit fault on their part for once?
Please send me the link that refutes everything I said. I love to know the "TRUE" story outside of HG's revisionist history..

It says it in the Wiki, HG gave detail charts of RT to writers Sukehiro Tomita & Hiroshi Ohnogi but where they wanted to center on new characters Macek gave it to American writers to refocus on the Macross characters..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robotech_II:_The_Sentinels
Nothing there says they were confused about Robotech. Yes they try to relate to the original three series but they wanted to write about new characters and not the Macross ones..
-
LLA might not be a "Stand Alone" release but it's not a DVD extra. It's part of a two movie collection..
Now from what I heard the reason for Carl Macek's "beef" with the Tatsunoko's writers wasn't that they were confused about Robotech it's that they didn't want to include the Macross characters and Carl Macek did.
-
I've yet to see evidence that Carl Macek had said Robotech was superior to Macross. I heard the interview he did for ANN where he said he barely altered Macross to be 1/3 of RT. He admitted he diminished Minmay from being "magical" like in Macross..
Also, LLA had a stand alone release; I have it coupled with the Shadow Chronicles Special Edition..
To be fair everyone calls the Robotech Masters leg of RT "Southern Cross" or Macross the "Macross Saga". Somehow "New Generation" is called "New Generation" and not Mospeada..

In my E-Mail a official description of Robotech Academy..
Announcing Robotech Academy!
We are proud to announce the next chapter in the Robotech saga! Based on Carl Macek's last project working with Harmony Gold, Robotech Academy follows the adventures of several cadets at the military academy. Under attack from strange forces called the Children of Zor, the cadets are sent on an odyssey around the universe, exploring the secrets of the Robotech Master: Zor!

Due to the lawsuit HG can't make derivatives based on the Mikimoto character designs or the original Studio Nue's mech designs. Fine create new character and mecha designs and use the Robotech: The Macross Saga names (Rick, Max Sterling, Lynn Kyle, etc.). Big West doesn't own the names that HG used in Robotech like Veritech or SDF 3..

How many months since the announcement and no more official news? Speculation can be fun but it's tiring with no more information..Starting to feel like vaporware..

The Sentinels will never happen due to it having the core Macross characters. I read the novels and the story was pretty cool and in some ways the novel story is a bit better than the outline that was in Robotech Art 3.
I don't see why they can't redesign the characters. Give Rick short hair. Give Lisa light blond hair. Give Max contacts. It's not hard. Though in part 2 of the AX panel video looks like a VF-04 Lightning flying around..
-
Maybe. But it just shows that they're incapable of creating fresh ideas that might revive their franchise. They constantly have to go back to their past to come up with concepts.
The fans want the Sentinels. I feel the reason why Shadow Chronicles failed that it wasn't the Sentinels. I thought Shadow Chronicles was close to the Robotech 3: Odyssey concept but with Sentinel characters. Even on the Macross side there's fans that want a continuation featuring the 1st generation characters and I guess it's the same for the Robotech side..

Just found about this. Talk about late to the party :-)
Half a million bucks from the fans to make a Robotech pilot based on an idea that's a quarter of a century old? LOL. I get the feeling that the people at the top level of Harmony Gold were laughing their pants off with this pitch. They must have absolutely no trust in them and then let them go ahead with their fundraising.
I hope one of 2 things happens.
1) They get their money (up to almost 63,000 today) and then we get to, (respectfully and without gloating of course), get to watch half a decade of development hell, production delays, personnel changes and other assorted CF's, until finally we get a pilot episode that will of course not result in a new series.
2) They fall well short of their target and the Argama guy decides to cut costs and puts the whole film/animation division on sale. He then get's a call from Mr. Funimation who makes a deal he can't refuse for the rights HG has on the Macross name overseas.
The Roddenberry family made some nice change selling Gene's old ideas... "Earth: Final Conflict"..The Sentinels is a 30 year old concept but that's what the RT fans want and it's probably RT's strongest story concept..
-
What gets me is that for years one of the complaints was there was no new series and now a new series has been announced people are complaining on how it's being funded. Though crowd funding seems to be the way smaller niche projects are being produced..
-
I'm not into Robotech bashing but this looks more like a cheap way to take peoples money than a serious first step into a series. No concept art or anything you see on any serious kickstarter. Just pay up because it says "Robotech" lol.
The running time of that fan made RT prequel HG killed was longer and they didn't ask for a dime.
No concept art?

It's like Mad Max meets Viva Las Vegas. Not a great movie overall but it has interesting concepts that'll keep you interested. I saw it during my Comcast digital cable days..

Is there a Marvel/FOX Cold War that may lead to Spiderman 3 being co-financed by Marvel & Sony and eventual Spiderman appearance in Avengers?..Rob Liefeld thinks so..
-
I wonder if Lionsgate gives the Power Rangers a "Batman Begins" style reboot..I'm kidding of course..
-
With his Macross Plus & voice acting days way behind him Bryan Cranston can concentrate on more mature and quality work..Ahem, Godzilla?
-
Watching Robert Redford and Samuel L. Jackson acting together was like seeing two seasoned veteran boxers go at each other..Great movie..

There was a rumor floating around a while back that CW was casting for Dick Grayson/Nightwing, which is very interesting. With the big teaser from last week it's pretty evident that Batman is indeed out there, and probably more experienced then Ollie. Dick Grayson could be past his Robin days depending on how long Batman's been operating, I would think it's more than coincidence that they reveal a pretty big and popular Bat-foe without setting up the possible introduction of an actual Bat-Family member. In case anyone cares, CW gave Girls co-star Adam Driver and Vampire Diaries Steven McQueen a chance at the role.
I think you're reading too much into the Harley cameo. It was just an Easter Egg because of Harley's involvement with the Suicide Squad. Yeah Nightwing was rumored or even teased but I think Dick still falls in that off limits area because of WB Movie Division..Didn't Deadshot & Bronze Tiger start out as Batman villains? Do they prove Batman exists in Arrow's world?
-
Very big news. Might be a tad bit early for this question but I'm gonna ask anyways: Is Shoji Kawamori involved or is this an independent Big West production ala Macross 2?
NEW MACROSS TV SERIES ANNOUNCED!

Love triangles..Pop stars..The Macross cliches are becoming very stale..Satelight needs to toss everything used in Macross and start fresh and that means it's time for a different voice and direction. I don't buy you have to have pop idols and love rivalries to make a Macross story. Macross R (The Race) should be animated..
