  1. Full frame is in my sight  . Trying to holdout for Nikon's next release D700x before copping the D700. This whole DX format is too confusing when trying to purchase lenses. Plus I'd rather switch while I'm still learning. More than likely will be selling the D90 and my DX lenses in the near future if anyone is interested.

Full frame will not only make your live easier with lens purchases. The bigger sensor means that there's room for bigger pixels which means you'll have better quality pics.

if you're going to go full frame be serious about photography go canon.

    fixed! :p

  2. oh lol.. ok, glad I stopped before making the engines 36 sided ^_^ Actually, on second thought, maybe the world needs a good high detail Gnerl model. ^^

a Hi-poly Gnerl would be great. I just got an idea for another project but I'll also need a hi-poly VF-1 for that. B))

  3. What's your definition of medium poly? I haven't done any new models for a while, and this might be something fast I can churn out to satisfy the itch. :)

1000 polys (give or take a couple hundred) should do for a fighter of this size. The Gnrels won't be close to the camera, but I like to keep my options open.

  4. The one I got from Chillyche is pretty low poly but it'll do for my current project. Just gotta figure out how to correctly apply a UVW unwrap modifier.

I you could provide a medium poly textured version I'd be mighty grateful. ^_^

BTW: That Glaug would be perfect for my current project to lead a squadron of Regults into battle.

Here's a little preview of my current project which is far from finished.

  5. Like the title says, I'd like to get my hands on a 3d model of the Gnerl fighter pod.

Doesn't have to be high poly, 3ds file will do, but a Max file with textures would be great.

I'm working on a new CG project with lots of Macross mecha.

    See my first project here.

    Thanks in advance!

  6. You have to give it a thorough cleaning every time you've used it or all the remaining goo will dry up and it'll get stuck. Just yank it good 'n hard one time and it'll break free again. It can hurt a little though.:lol:

The only problem is that it worked fine first few times and now it's stuck... :'(

What if I break it? lol there goes my $200..

  7. Tell me about it! It took months for me to compile a decent, and 'affordable' tripod/ballhead set-up and it still cost more than €600. This Gitzo isn't even a carbon version, those start at €450 for the one I'd need for my equipment.

I'm pretty much set for my racing photography with the 70-200 and the urban exploration stuff with the tripod for now. a fast ultra wide zoom is still on the wishlist, but it'll have to wait.

I haven't bought any Macross toys for little over a year now because all my extra cash is going into the photography thing. I'm even thinking about selling some of the toys to pay for the ultra wide.

I knew I needed to score a bag to protect my stuff and the fact that it was only 75 bucks made it a no brainer. I am learning quickly though that between collecting Macross stuff and this photography thing one is going to have to be placed on hold! I've got custom work out the wauzoo lined up, but I keep seeing what I could be buying "camera wise" if I didn't have to pay for the customs.

I am fiending for the Nikon 70-200 version that same Cannon L lens. I'm not going to even delve into tripods because I have seen how expensive they can be. I know there has to be something there driving up the cost, but I do not care to know right now; it'll just remind me of how much money I have to spend that I don't have  . Wish this stuff was cheaper.

It'll be June before I can afford 70-200, but that should do it for me for a while as far as lenses for what I plan to shoot.

I can then focus on a nice flash, the nikon camera grip for the D90, and a decent tripod.

  8. Good choice on the bag MacrossMan! You don't want to be spending extra cash on a new bag every time you buy an extra accessory for your camera.

Finally got my quick release clamp from RRS today so my tripod setup is complete.

I got the various componants from different stores and saved over €300 making it possible for me to have a pro grade ballhead for a consumer grade price. ^_^

  9. Great buy there anime52k8!

The 70-200 mmf4 is supposedly the sharpest telezoom lens on the planet. I chose the f2.8 because I wanted the extra stops available when I needed them. The 2.8 is still sharp as hell and I doubt my non-pro eye will notice the difference in sharpness. An L lens is quite an investment but you'll forget all about the money when you import that perfect picture into Lightroom.

  10. Yeah, went from the 30D to 5D MKII - might've stuck with the 1.6x crop if they had announced the 7D earlier! <_< But hey, it's full frame now and I can't complain!

Loved the 10-22mm, it's true about what people/reviews say, that it's an L lens in an EF-S body. If you have a 1.6x crop body and need an ultra wide angle lens, the 10-22mm is definitely the one to get.

I was seriously considering getting it, but with a possible 14-24 on the way, I'll be patient and probably get that.

ive sold my 17-40L, it just was too wide for my taste now. ive also sold my 50 1.8, while it was a sharp copy but it takes awhile to focus on subject though.

so the only thing is left now is my 1000 gram 24-70. im planning to get the faster 50mm 1.4 as my travel lens

Seriously? I'll take it as wide as it comes (I'm talking lens ngle not,... you dirty bastards!)

BTW. Here's a link to my Urban Exploration blog with pics. It's in Dutch but you should be able to navigate it. We've only visited three sites so far, at one of which we had to get out fast because of someone entering the building. Let me tell you, I almost pissed my pants when we heard the door opening.

  11. I asume you went full frame if you needed to replace the 10-22mm?

How was the 10-22mm? Is it as great as the online reviews say it is?

Personally I prefer to have a bit of an overlap between my lenses. I'm currently using the 16-35 with the 24-105. Needed a wide angle to replace the EFS 10-22mm. 14-24 sounds pretty slick though.
  12. hey dante, just get a 5d now

I just spent a couple hundred on a tripod and ballhead, no way I can afford a 5D right now. I wish I could though. I was kind of hoping the 7D would be full frame but I guess I'll have to wait a little longer.

Well, there is the EF 16-35 f/2.8L, great lens too.

I wish Canon would come out with a 24-70 f/2.8L or 24-105 f/2.8L with IS.

The EF 16-35 is great but it doesn't match with the 24-70 very well which I plan on getting eventually.

I just sh*t myself with excitement. I need to start saving up for this one... maybe Christmas next year.

(actually, I wonder what the chances are of getting a non-IS 24-70 for cheap will be once this thing comes out)

also, I'm ordering a new lens Monday, should be here by the 24th.

I was thinking the same thing. The 'old' 24-70 price should drop when stores get the new IS version in stock.

14-24, 24-70, 70-200 all with f2.8 would be the Holy Trinity of lenses AFAIC.

    What lens are you getting?

  13. My reason for choosing the Computrekker is because it alows me to put my camera in there with any lens mounted. In some conditions (beach) you don't want to have to change lenses to fit everything into the bag. Having enough space for two telezooms means I won't have to change lenses when I need to pack up. There's also room for any lenses I'll purchase in the future.

BTW: Canon rumors says there might be a EF mount 14-24 mm f2.8 L lens coming next year. That's the best news this years IMO.

I've been pondering what wide angle lens to get next. The EF-S 10-22 mm lens is great but it won't fit a full frame body I might get in a few years. The EF 17-40 mm f4 is great but it's not really wide enough for my needs on a crop sensor camera.

a 14-24 would be perfect cause it'll be wide enough on a crop sensor camera and it work great with the 24-70 mm I plan on getting too. God, what a perfect line up 14-24 mm, 24-70 mm and the 70-200 mm I already own all with f2.8! Can't wait!!

the computrekker is a nice bag, but honestly too big and cavernous for my needs (I highly doubt I'm going to need to carry two full size bodies plus half a dozen lenses.)

If I needed 1 bag to carry everything I'd be more interested in the compuPrimus. it's got room for a body plus several large lenses and a big separate storage compartment (I never liked the idea of throwing junk in with my camera/lenses). also it's got rear access with a waist strap like the flipside and side access like the fastpack so best of both worlds.

  14. I started out with a Fastpack 200 and loved it untill I got the big 70-200 f2.8 lens. I want the abillity to bring other non-camera related stuff when I'm on a daytrip without having to use another bag. Which is why I got the Computrekker AW. It holds all my camera goodies (incl. a tripod) with room to spare for future lenses and I can bring a laptop, waterbottle, a book etc. It's big, but I won't have to shop for a new bag for years to come.

  15. Wiki on focal lenght with comparison shots. ^_^

And another. Scroll down past all the math stuff to see some more comparison shots.

You'll still need to take crop factor into account with any focal lenght number you see. For Nikon that's x1.5, for Canon it's x1.6.

And here's my to cents on purchasing a lens.

    I see a lot of people buying a DSLR thinking they'll automatically get better pics and be disapointed when their holiday/family snapshots look just like the ones they took with their old point 'n shoot camera. There are three reasons for that;

    1. They only used the program modes. Forget about the 'landscape, portrait, sports program modes on your camera. Experiment with the aperture and timer priority mode and especially the manual mode. Only then will you use the full potential of a DSLR camera and get those shots that make people want a camera just like that.
    2. They got a slow cheap kitlens. Save up and invest in a good lens. Glass is more important then your camera's body because in a couple of years you'll want to get a newer body, but you'll be using your lenses a lot longer. In photography more money means better equipment means better pics. (You'll also need skill and creativity! B)) )

a cheap slow lens will not get you that blurred background (it's called bokeh, and the 'creamier' the better) you want when making a portrait of your kid and also it won't be as sharp as a good lens.

    3. They didn't invest in a stand-alone flash meaning every family pic has those awfull hard shadows on the walls behind the subject and red eyes.

Like I said, just my two cents and that's all I could spare cause I'm saving up for an extremely wide angle 10-22 mm lens. (which, with Canon's x1.6 crop factor means it's actually a 16-35 mm) ^_^

  16. My tripod arrived last week and I've ordered a, hold on,...wait for it,... Really Right Stuff BH-40 ballhead with quick-release clamp.

I noticed a local (Dutch) website has them on sale but it's really weird 'cause I ordered a separate ballhead and clamp and got 'em cheaper than the same pieces as a set. The ballhead was $238 and the clamp was $184 making my set $422. The store sold them as a set for $520. I'm gonna have to wait a few weeks because they have them on backorder, but I called them and confirmed the order for $422 (they sent me a pdf invoice). That's even cheaper than ordering from the RRS website shipped ($50) and taxed (%20 + handling fee)

    ^_^ <--me being happy
