Have you even seen episode 5?! Guess not. If you had, you would've seen what the hell I'm talking about.

Apollo Norm launches fighters from the top hangar and from the side domes. They slide out and have 6 launch tubes pointing up and 6 more pointing down. So that's another 12 tubes. That makes a total of 48 launch tubes.  Given that aside the massive hangar on top, they're the same as Andromeda, there's a chance Andromeda has the same lateral launch system.

As far as Yamato goes, I haven't implied anything. Didn't even mention it in that comment.

So far we haven't seen either Andromeda or any of the Dreadnoughts actually launch fighters so I don't know where you're getting the idea that they launch them from the ventral hatch.

Maybe you should actually see the episodes before becoming confrontational and getting in people's faces.

    Here's a visual aid.

The model sheets for both Andromeda and Dreadnought lack any mention of side bulge launchers, and considering how thorough those are, I doubt they have them.  In fact, the description for the ventral hanger states that it's for the launching and retrieval of planes and description for the side bulge on both Andromeda and Dreadnought state they're the housing for the missile launchers, so it's far more likely that the side bulge launch mechanism is unique to Apollo Norm and her sister.

    Side bulge:
Multiple missile launcher—A missile launcher equipped with a total of 16 units on both sides.

    Ventral hatch:
Ship's opening for arrival and departure—Arrival and departure hatched for on board aircraft.

    miLPVFs.png

    Side bulge:
Short torpedo launch tubes—Short torpedo launch tube equipped with 12 gates on both sides

    Ventral hatch:
Aircraft/internal boat arrival and landing—Landing and launch for onboard aircraft and internal boats

Note that the panels to the left and right of Dreadnought's ventral hatch are likely the opening for the internal boats similar to Yamato's.

If they launch like those of the Apollo-Norm, then the ventral hatch must be to retrieve the fighters, as they would launch from the lateral domes. Each houses 6 launchers. Personally, I think it looks a bit ridiculous, especially the rate of launch of the fighters.

The hell are you talking about?  The Andromeda and Dreadnought launch and retrieve fighters the same way as the Yamato, ie through the ventral hanger door.  Are you implying that the Yamato launches her fighters from the side hanger doors even though they don't even connect?

Apollo Norm and her sister have all their planes in the big hanger everyone makes fun of.  They have 12 openings, so they can launch 12 fighters at a time.  Andromeda, Dreadnought, and Yamato can only launch one at a time.

I really don't see what's so challenging to understand.

I wonder how and where those fighters are stored, and how they are launched.  36 fighters are a lot of fighters for a BB, is the Andromeda supposed to be modeled after the Ise and the Hyuga.... well, why not, after all, the Yamato is like that, just no flight deck.

Same as the Yamato.  The 1/1000 models of the Andromeda and Dreadnought have an aft ventral hanger door.

That definitely caught my attention. Less powerful, but a much higher sustained fire rate. In other words, quantity over quality. Yamato's main guns may not have a high fire rate, but usually, they only need to hit once. Not only that, they can switch ammo type from energy to artillery shells too. Pretty confident the other ships in the EDF can't do that.

    Supplemental materials say they can.

That's nice explanation and all, but it still doesn't change the fact that this new Yamato looks like pregnant whale...

Face it, you wouldn't have noticed otherwise if someone hadn't pointed it out, especially on-screen.

By the way, did the Andromeda have fighters?  Was there a reason they weren't launched?

Andromeda has 36 fighters, the Dreadnought-class has 15 fighters.  They probably didn't launch because they weren't trying to sink Yamato, just scare them off.

The Murasame and Kongo class ships that make the bulk of the fleet don't have them. The E.Class is meant as a patrol cruiser, so there's no reason to assume that it has a WMG just because of the opening on the bow. And the similar ships in the original series didn't have WMG's. The emphasis on 2202 is on Earth breaking the promise of not using Wave-Motion Guns and using the Dance of Time to allow their proliferation. That is embodied in the A and D classes, which are the only ones we see being built inside the time anomaly facility, aside some Destoria-class battleships.

The Kongou and Murasame are simply upgrades of the pre-2199 ships; it can be assumed that restructuring the ship to allow them to use a WMG would have been more work than simply switching out the guns and installing a Wave Motion Engine.

All the resources I could find indicated the original series ships had WMGs; they just never got a chance to fire them.  The only ship that didn't have an opening on the front that had rifling was the EDF destroyer.  I could see an argument for the cruisers and such in 2202 using really big positron shock cannons for the bows, but the openings were never used as thrusters or whatever, which was what I was against.

If you're making your fleet based on the use of WMGs, then there's no reason to not put them on the cruisers and other smaller craft if you have the technology to do so.  Just because it's a patrol cruiser doesn't mean it will never have an opportunity to use the WMG; one could argue that as a patrol cruiser it should since it would be off by itself instead of with the rest of the fleet battleships.

Also, the Destroia is a heavy cruiser, not a battleship.

Saw the movie today and it was an enjoyable movie. However since it got this high praise from the critics makes me think that I should be grateful that I didn't watch BvS and Suicide Squad because these movies must be abysmal if Wonder Womand is miles ahead of the other ones. ^_^

Also what I didn't understand watching the movie was:

      Hide contents

Why did Ares support the spy mission to stop the gas attack on the allies when his whole deal is making it a success to keep WW1 going?

Also why was it more safe to fly the plane into the sky and explode it there compared to blow it up on the ground?

Ares at that point realized who Diana was.  His entire goal from then on is to corrupt her by showing the inherent evils of Man. He supported the spy mission so Diana goes to the front and learns how horrible humans are.

So does that mean that the Dreadnought class has an additional 5 Wave motion guns (2 on each side of the hull and another behind the bridge)?

    IMG_0136.thumb.JPG.9c6c0f91df57830e1bf39510e09c5e67.JPG

They are just lines...the side thrusters are painted bright red just like it and also have the same lines/rifling. So I came to that conclusion because of the same coloring and details. Yamato, and Dreadnought have no Red for their WaveMotion Guns and Andromeda's are a completely different shade. But the thrusters have the exact same color shade and detailing. If I'm wrong then I am wrong, no sweat off of my brow, but I don't see why it would be such a stretch to come to my conclusion.

    Chris

Because the entire point of the bew EDF ships is that they all contain Wave Motion Guns.  They had them in the original, and with the huge emphasis that has been placed on Earth using WMGs now there's very little reason to think that the cruisers and lesser ships won't mount them as well.

  8. 1 hour ago, Dobber said:

I was going to say no. The opening in the bow reminds me of the side thrusters on the Andromeda and Dreadnought. I guess we'll have to wait and see. :)

    Chris

I don't see how you can think that. With the rifling it looks a lot more like a Wave Motion Gun.

  9. Summary of chapter 2 from macdawson on Animesuki.

    Episode 3

Continues from what we see in the 12 minute preview, with Keyman explaining the nature of the mysterious shipyard facility. There is mention of a phenomenon called "Dance of Time" and presumably, even with those special suits, humans can only live inside the singularity for a maximum of one hour. Can't really give any more detail without subs. Sanada visits Niimi at the hospital and tells her Kodai has discovered the secret of the "Dance of Time" and has decided to take action over the vision that Yamato's crew had. He flashes back to Hijikata departing due to his disapproval of the UNCF's plans. When Sanada defends the need for Earth to arm itself, Kodai punches him (the aggression is inferred, as it happens after a fade to black, but we hear Tokugawa telling him to stop and Yuki screaming his name). Todo declines Kodai's request to investigate Telezart. But Sanada and the rest of the command staff support his decision and they decide to go anyway. Shima seems less convinced. Planet 11 comes under attack by Nazca's fleet. After a conversation in Yamato's elevator, Kodai tells Yuki he wants her to stay on Earth. Though she accepts, she runs off, leaving her engagement ring with Kodai. The colony is relentlessly bombarded. Saito and Nagakura barely manage to save Santa and the kids and run for cover. The episode ends with the colony being bombarded.

    Episode 4:

In Okita's quarters aboard Yamato, Kodai and Sanada go over the plan to escape Earth. Sanada relinquishes command to Kodai, making him the ship's captain. A strike force heads for the Yamato's dome but the ship is gone, having apparently been moved underground. Kodai is in the WMG's firing gate, asking Okita for guidance and sees the captain once again. The crew arrive at the site of the underground dock, using Kirishima as a submarine. The crew goes ashore and into trucks, which are then taken underground. This is watched by Shima from afar. Having finaly determined Yamato's location, Serizawa wants to move in on them but Todo wants to talk them out of it before any action is taken. Serizawa accepts but has the battle satellite readied just in case.

All the crew seems to have answered the call, except Shima. Ota is not thrilled to become the ship's navigator. Todo calls in and gives the Yamato's crew an ultimatum to stand down. Kodai has the message relayed shipwide, so the crew can hear it. He then urges everyone to decide what they want to do. Everyone stands by their decision and preparations continue. Kodai relieves Ota and takes the helm. Just then, the main dock control room is destroyed. Yamazaki tells Kodai that without it, they can't flood the dock or open the main sea gate. He offers himself to go up to the secondary control room and get it online to operate the system from there. Troops come in and begin their assault. Nanbu uses one of the pulse lasers to detonate charges placed in crates throughout the dock. Yamazaki, Kiryu, Hoshina and Mizaki manage to start the system but are cut off from Yamato by the soldiers and the rising water. Enomoto urges Saijo to close the access hatch, as water is coming in and the others will have to be left behind. Suddenly, one of the troopers comes out of the water. Yamato leaves the dock as the trooper reaches the bridge and reveals himself to be Shima. He takes the controls and Yamato takes off. The battle satellite is destroyed quickly and Yamato leaves Earth. Serizawa decides Yamato must be hunted down. Andromeda and her fleet are seen near Jupiter.

    Episode 5:

On the Moon, Makoto looks over an excited Tsubase, when she spots Kato. He tells her Yamato has left Earth but he can't go with them. The Andromeda fleet begins a massive exercise. Apollo Norm launches her fighters and the Dreadnoughts fire their cannons. Yamamoto, Shinohara and a few more pilots use this moment to abandon formation and fly to the rendaz-vous point to meet Yamato. Fighters from the Apollo Norm are sent in pursuit. Captain Yamanami is warned of the situation. Yamato approached the asteroid belt and Sanada asks Analyzer to search for an R&D file. On the Moon, Kato watches over his sleeping hailing son. Makoto tells him to go to Yamato, as he won't be happy if he's not flying. He hugs her and prepares to leave. The rogue pilots are under attack until a white Czvarke, piloted by Keyman, detonates a special jamming device which leaves the Apollo Norm's planes powerless. On the Moon, Ambassador Baler tries to convince Todo of the righteousness of Yamato's actions. In his cabin, Yamanami drinks a cup of tea and talks to a painting of Okita, wondering what the old captain would think of all this. He receives orders to pursue Yamato. Andromeda leaves the fleet to search for the renegade ship.

As Yamato dives deeper into the asteroid field, Sanada and Tokugawa find the devices they were looking for. Saijo spots fighters on radar and Yamato goes on alert. Yamamoto makes a close pass to Yamato's briddge and Kodai recognizes her style. The pilots are welcomed aboard, as well as Keyman, who insists on tagging along for the duration of the journey. Andromeda is spotted. Yamanami demands they stand down but Kodai refuses. The graviton cannons cause massive subspace detonations that rock Yamato. Sanada has the ship fire the devices which cling on to the nearby asteroids. Andromeda fires at the asteroids. From the smoke and dust rises a massive "asteroid ship". The defense system manages to divert the Andromeda's fire until they're close enough to try and make a run for it. Yamanami doesn't back down and the ships collide head on. The Wave-Motion Barriers are all that prevent actual contact, pushing each other aside. Yamanami is impressed. Before anything else can be done, Todo and the higher ups of the UNCF call off the pursuit. Convinced by Baler of Telezart's importance, the Earth Federation president has decided to authorize Yamato's mission. Yamazaki and the others are released and Kato leaves the Moon on a booster assisted Cosmo Tiger II. Andromeda sends fighters to Yamato to replenish its numbers, along with Okita's portrait, which is hung in Yamato's bridge. Kato catches up with Yamato and looking at his family's photo, swears to make it back. Yamato moves on. The long journey begins.

    Episode 6:

A ship float dead in space. Inside is Nagakura, injured. Suddenly, the noise of cutting tools wakes her from her slumber. We flash back to the attack on Planet 11. Needle Slaves have massacred civilians, wherever they find them. A young Garmillan girl cries as she looks at the street, littered with bodies. A Needle Slave spots her and prepares to strike but its shot down by Nagakura. They hide as more Slaves patrol. The little girl says she lost track of her brother. As they go down the wrecked city streets, she stops and says "Yamato". Nagakura looks and sees a Yamato model lying on the ground. Next to it, a hand sticks out from under the rubble. Its the girl's brother, unfortunately dead. Nagakura consoles her. As the sun rises, more Needle Slaves pursue a group of survivors. Gen, one of Saito's men, takes them on. A wounded soldier detonates and kills him, just after he warns Saito of the danger. Saito sees the explosion as he shepherds survivors to an underground shelter. On the command centre, Hijikata tries to reason with Nazca but to no avail. The roof collapses on him and his staff. Unable to call for help, due to the enemy jamming, Saito decides to use an escape boat to send someone off world and get help. Nagakura protests when she's chosen, thinking Saito is sending her for being a woman, but he says she's the only one that can operate the damned thing. She reluctantly accepts, as Tochiro and Kurata, the rest of the "Moon survivors", smile. They take on the attackers to allow Nagakura to take off. Once in orbit, the boat warps. Back to present time, the cutting is revealed to be done by Enomoto's men, and they take Nagakura aboard Yamato. The data she gathered before warping reveals a large fleet, blocking the planet. Todo refuses to authorize the rescue mission, as reaching Telezart takes priority. But Kodai decides that "that woman" deserves help, refering to Nagakura. They decide to make a warp straight into the planet's atmosphere. This will allow them to bypassthe blockade and mask their warp signature from the UNCF, at least long enough to avoid immediate trouble with command. The con is that the stress of warping into a gravity well on the system will cause them to lose shock cannons and Wave-Motion Barrier. Despite Kato's protests, Keyman joins the air group. Yamato warps to Planet 11.

Saito wakes up on a bridge. The woman we saw in episode 3 runs to him with the young Garmillan girl, as Needle Slaves surround them. Saito sees no way out. The oung girl says her brother told her Yamato would come if they were in danger. Saito is about to say otherwise... when Yamato warps out above them. Akira takes out the enemy bots and the air wing takes on the attacking ships. Yamato descends on the crevasse and anchors itself allowing the survivors to board through bridge 3. A Yamamoto damages a Kukulkan, but the ship splits its top hull from the underside and goes straight for Yamato. Yamato takes off and manages to avoid impact, but another Kukulkan positions itself above them and fires. Trapped in the crevasse, Kodai fires missiles and Type 3 shells and shoots the enemy down. When victory seems at hand, 6 Kalaklum-class battleships warp out in orbit. The ships converge and combine their attack rings. Commanded by Zordar, they fire a concentrated beam of energy that lights the skies, cutting across the crevasse. Yamato is seen flying right into the beam's path. Kato, Yamaoto and Keyman look at the destruction bellow and wonder if Yamato has met its end.

That's it. Sorry for the length. Some events are described as I currently understand them. Hopefully, subs will come soon. biggrin.gif

Specifically, it needs MANY MORE AA turrets. Fighters will have a field day with those ships, always was bothered by those designs. As far as I'm concerned, the Yamato is the most COMPLETE ship in the fleet, has virtually every contingency covered.

    30 minutes ago, Dobber said:

Agreed, as much as I like/love the Andromeda and Dreadnaughts, they al seem very under gunned/protected.

    Chris

The Andromeda has a total of 42 (16 on the bulge amidships, 10 on the underside, and 16 to the side of the conning tower) missile launchers that can double as AA duty.  Yamato only has 16, 8 in the "smokestack" and 8 on the underside.  It also has 4 pulse laser turrets (2 double-mounts around the bridge and 2 triple-mounts beside the conning tower) as well as a triple-mount dispersion pulse laser behind the conning tower (it's the bulge with 3 openings behind the bridge and in front of the 3rd turret). The Andromeda seems to be taking a more modern approach to AA, by spamming missiles as opposed to the Yamato's WW2 approach by spamming guns.

In addition to the positron shock cannons, the Andromeda has 8 anti-ship grenade launchers on the upper bulge in front of front turret as well as 6 beam projectors on each side of the conning tower (the grey openings).  The Andromeda also has 8 total subspace torpedo tubes (the bulges under the front turret with 2 openings) in addition to its 4 rapid-fire torpedo tubes (on the nose), 8 small torpedo tubes (above and below the fin), and 16 short torpedo tubes.  The Yamato only has 12 torpedo tubes (6 in the bow, 6 in the aft) and 16 short torpedo tubes.

The Andromeda also has the same fighter complement as the Yamato, minus the Cosmo Zeroes.  All-in-all, the Andromeda looks to be on-paper superior to the Yamato in almost every way.

Apologies for going back to an earlier question: Is the "new" Andromeda is different from the original series. I compared a model build of the old 1980s Andromeda Bandai kit vs. one of the "new" one and the new ship is much larger (I believe the official measurements  place it at 444 meters where the original was somewhere in the 300 meter range) since the original model is 1/700 and this one is 1/1000 and they are the same length. The proportions are actually fairly different in that the newer Andromeda isn't as thick or as wide proportional to it's length as the older version, leaving it looking leaner and "faster". Beyond that there are a number of subtle contour differences such as the suggestions of what in a modern submarine would be a pair of "pressure hulls" subtly rising out from the sides about 1/3 of the way from the front of the main hull as well as differences in the rear "scoop" and how it flows into the main hull. There are a lot more small curves and angles in the ship which may be from the modern series having a CG ship, allowing it to be shown from any angle without greater difficulty versus the original design being animated by hand, making the inclusion of subtle undercuts, projections etc prohibitively difficult to draw cost effectively in the original Yamato 2 series. I've worked professionally in 3d since 1995 and I suspect that the new Andromeda model may very well be a Solidworks (or similar) CAD/CAM version based on the 3d data set used for the actual show, allowing for a great deal of accuracy. I observed in one of the various Japanese hobby magazines that a project was done by an individual with access to the Mielda Dietz fighter 3d model data set to produce a 3d print based model that turned out beautifully in 1/72 scale. In ending, I should say that, having a kit of the new Andromeda, I've been able to look over the quality of the build and the quality of assembly and both are excellent. The VFX wave motion gun modules aren't as bright as I like but I'm a complete brightness fiend who would love to put some of the tri-Cree or Luxeon Tri Rebel LEDs I use when building lightsaber props into that area. One cool thing; however; is that the sound and light effect are synced up on the wave gun build up to firing moment and that would be tricky to due oneself unless one is familiar with Arduino or similar tools and having sound FX is always just cool from the word go. On a related subject, has anyone yet figured out why the Aldebaran is being released as a separate model? The only thing that would, at first glance, seem to different is that the Andromeda model only comes with decals specific to the Andromeda...

Bandai loves releasing variants, especially if they're simple color changes.  There's a market for people who want the new darker blue Andromeda but are unable or unwilling to paint, as Bandai does a fantastic job with color separation.

It's the age-old problem of following hubris, and ignoring the warnings.

I watched them on Kissanime and they were really good. Would be even better with better subtitles!

Westfall, what do these play on? Windows Media Player won't play them.

You need the raw video file (preferably .mkv) and a special video player such as MPC-HC (it's free).  You open the raw video, then drag the subtitles into MPC-HC.

Whatever you could do, would be greatly appreciated.  I'd compensate you for it too, if that even makes any sense.  In any case, for those of us who chose the dark side and watched the fansubs, I've got some points to discuss:

      Reveal hidden contents

    1.  The UN fleet seems to have better ships, but not with the technology or power that even the ancient Yamato has.  What gives?  Is this because of the informal agreement that Okita made with Starsha?

    2.  I think it was a mistake to reveal the Yamato so early in the story.  Unless I'm remembering it wrong, the Yamato came to life in the original Comet Empire series when Kodai and his people were desperate to try their own hand at defeating the Comet Empire.  Revealing the Yamato now will remove the dramatic effect of it being resurrected later in the story when things invariably get more bleak for Earth.

    3.  Can any of the characters be that surprised that wave weaponry not only remains but has been developed into something stronger?  Not to get political, but just because one man makes a promise with an arguably delusional woman on a distant planet, doesn't mean that the rest of the universe is going to follow suit.  The Gatlantians (sp?) clearly don't care, you could say that the Gamilans may not have cared either.  For the sake of survival, Earth has to carry the biggest stick possible.

    4.  I didn't get my wish of a redesigned Andromeda, bristling with more guns and weapons than the original, but dare I say it looks a lot leaner and meaner than the one I can remember from the original Comet Empire series.  Anyone else notice that?  Or is it just me.

Can't think of anything else as of now, but I'll post up more thoughts as I come across them...

    Spoiler

    1) The UNCF ships are merely refitted 2199 UNCN ships.  While they have a substantial firepower increase (going from amplified light cannons to positron shock cannons and a larger bow shock cannon) and better mobility, they're still behind the Yamato because they're smaller and streamlined for mass production.

    2) You're remembering it wrong.  In Farewell the Yamato was revealed 20 minutes into the movie when her crew decides to commandeer her after it's said they'll be separated.  In series two Yamato is there from episode one, returning from a patrol and running into the Comet Empire.  In either of them the Yamato plays a big role at the start and no fanfare is spent on "resurrecting" her.

    3) You're right it's a bit naive, but it's also the fact that the new government is using it willy-nilly as opposed to the Yamato who used it primarily in self-defense.  The floating continent and the Battle of Balun are the only two times it was used offensively, and the former was the first test fire while the latter the primary goal wasn't the destruction of ships, but the denial of an enemy asset.

    4) The new Andromeda has a ton of new weapons.  Here's the translated armament from yamato2202.net:

Prime weapon: Dimensional Wave-Motion radiation discharger (Dispersion Wave-Motion Gun)
40.6 cm triple-barrel convergent compression type shock cannon x 4
Quick firing torpedo launch tube x 4
    Gravity child spread launcher 4
    Four barrel anti-battleship grenade launcher x 2.
    Sub-space torpedo launcher x 4
Conning tower protection shock field cannon x 3
Six-barrel multi-launch lateral beam cannons for close combat x 2

The model's guide lists significantly more too:

Most of us didn't but that's what we were dealt with.

I've watched the fansub and... well, it's good enough to get the major points of the story but far from perfect. I've been making a set of subs for myself and a couple of friends, translated from the Italian subtitled stream. Given those are from an official legitimate release, I have deferred to them when I find diverging dialogue. The fansub did save me the trouble of having to make the subtitles from scratch, as it gave me a set of pre-timed files. episode 1 was already done when these came along but episode 2 has been fast-tracked thanks to this. The most annoying aspect of the fansub is that they didn't fix the Russian naming for Gatlantis of gatlantean (the English fansub was made using a Russian fansub as its starting point), resulting in Gatlantov and Gatlantic and such. Other bits of dialogue were a bit over simplified. But as I said, they get the point across. At least people can finally have a grasp of what's going on until Bandai Visual and Voyager decide to step up. Though I'm not gonna hold my breath on that...
