limiter release? the all weapons firing at once? all the Valks have that aside from the 1J
do correct me if i'm wrong...
not sure what yer speaking of
The limiter release is an upgrade for each of the mecha in the game. It costs 50,000 ACE points and can only be accessed after you've maxed out the experience points for the pilot (to the tune of 100,000 EP, which takes a while to get).
Once activated, the limiter release gives that mecha unlimited ammunition. Basically, I gave Roy an infinite number of reaction missiles to play with

NICE!! great tribute to one of the best games of all time!!
I wanted to do the whole stage but YouTube's time limit is 10 minutes
-
I did a video of the TV series finale in the game:

Did a video of me playing one of the Macross stages in ACE2:
Roy's VF-1S has the limiter release in case you were wondering.

Gameplay is a far more strategic and teambased version of MechAssault, the customisation is all Armored Core.
-
Singleplayer is mostly a glorified training setup. Online is very cool though. You play in a persistant war with three factions, so you capture and defend strategic positions.
They had problems with the servers but they've mostly been fixed now.

Mecha design is by Miyatake in case anyone is wondering.

I managed to complete the original ps1 game ages ago. It was a good game idea but the graphics were average. The best thing to do is get a bipedal mecha with a decent turning rate and a gun that has a fast rate of fire with powerful damage per shot.
At one of the last missions, the thing that allowed me to win was getting the last ace stuck in a corridor and mashing the fire button to wear the other guy down quicker than he could wear my mech down. (you end up having to take damage to do damage)
The only problem with the original is because the game is more sim than action, it didn't feel like there was as much skill in what you do and it is more a case of common sense. (controls are sluggish to give it that robot feel rather than being intense and responsive like Virtua On which is more close to my style) But there was a lot of variety in it and the customisation is fun.
I would love if from software could make a DS game like this. But use the bottom screen to put all the stats and indicators and have the top half for viewing. But instead of digital control pad for turning around, they use a system similar to what metroid prime hunters uses. (you have a virtual "mouse/look" mode to change direction and target)
there are some images of mechassault DS on ign here:
http://media.ds.ign.com/media/811/811691/imgs_1.html
something like that would be good as a spin off from the main series(include an online mode and stuff)
The original Armored Core was actually faster than the original Virtual On, if you had correctly customised the AC. Virtual On and Armored Core are also wholly different approaches to mecha gaming; Virtual On works around fixed length dashes with homing attacks, whereas Armored Core is more freeform in terms of movement and ballistics.
As for MechAssault...

It's a good kit and is a very faithful version of Evangel's AC from Nexus. Here's a picture of mine (unpainted) from a while back:
The upcoming kit is from Last Raven in case anyone is wondering.

Ouch! Even more reason to be careful with the toy.

Got mine today and I echo the sentiments about Shogo, the figure is awful and the elbow joints have big bits of plastic sticking out (as shown already). The Garland is lovely though and well worth the wait, interesting use of magnets too.

I don't speak Japanese, so I'm not sure if getting this game would do me any good. I don't wanna' get stuck with a game I can't navigate through at all. I bought the BERSERK import, but that's easy to figure out... you just hack things into bits and most of the menus are in english. So can anybody tell me the scoop on this game? Much appreciated!

Yamato's official blurb says May 31st.
-
There are a few about but they are mostly utterly false; there is a narrative connection between the two games something that is made patently clear in the second mission.
It doesn't suck.

I have tried and tried, as have others but to no avail.
As well as Tenjin, other artists I've suggested to them for Macross toy box art are Yoshiyuki Takani and Yuji Kaida.
Anybody who doesn't know who these two fine artist are and their previous contribution to Macross box art, shame on you for calling yourself a Macross fan.
Indeed, both Takani and Kaida are old hands to the industry. Both are still fairly prolific however but suitably expensive (I get the generally impression that Tenjin is on the cheaper side, hence why people like Konami can afford him to do the cover artwork for Gradius V).
Kaida has a very good website though and the following artbook of Takani's 80's portfolio comes highly recommended...

It's great, when you starting upgrading your mecha you really notice the difference in performance and weapon potency. The limiter release is nuts though, after all having Roy's VF-1S Strike Valkyrie with unlimited reaction missiles is more than a little crazy (there is fantastic special effect when one of those detonates though).
-
Those are all units that are especially well armoured in the game, particularly the God Gundam. Basically, if you upgrade armour more than the potency of your enemy's weapons then you take less or in some cases no damage.
Sazabi is an unlockable.

I'm going through the game right now
the VF1's become available around mission 50 or so...
so far, i got 4 of 'em. i'm still waiting on the FAST packs...
this is probably the 1 version of the VF1 where gerwalk's been VERY useful, more useful than fighter mode.
it's a big improvement over the 1st one, although the target lock-on is kinda stupid, it'll just lock on to anything close by. kinda annoying when you're after mission-specific targets
EDIT:
my copy's got some kind of bug where depending on a mission, & what machine you're flying, you stay invincible until you use a "super weapon".
for example: at a certain mission, the Nu gundam will stay 9999 armor for the entire mission unless i use the funnels wierd...
If you've even vaguely upgraded the RX-93 it has very potent armour. I agree on the target lock though, can be very frustrating.

I reviewed the first game a while back now, it's very good but quite a bit different from the sequel. The implementation of the Valkyries in the sequel is superb however, I'd say better than SEGA AM2's effort (GERWALK works as a playable mode, you can fire off missiles in battroid mode and you actually do melee attacks now). Plus, the stage where the Macross transforms around you is remarkably impressive.
The game only really caters for for the VF-1 though, but Miria's Queadluun Rau (from DYRL) makes an appearance as a playable unit.
Finished both games utterly just in case anyone is wondering (as in all unlocks).

Asked the missus about this and she said, likely many here have already noted, that Kawamori writes very messily. Basically, the one kanji that possibly denotes that they are guns is very badly written. However, it looks like a kanji that suggests "something shoots out" (hence a gun). Will get my artbooks from work and verify sometime next week.
Ps2 Game A.c.e 2

Both ACE and ACE2 have 2 player versus. Neither game is very balanced however, so if you want to do a tournament keep it to Valkyries.
A game save with all the mecha unlocked is here:
