On the original topic, I know that Macross II is probably the least respected chapter of the series, and that the Palladium RPG books aren't exactly spot on. However, in the Macross II RPG deck plans sourcebook, it says that Marduk ships, which are slightly modified copies of Zentran ships, start out as ovoid blobs of rough, silicon-like material that gradually morph into the shape of a ship. The highly organic appearance of both and Zentradi these ships seems to support this theory. An organic composition would have other advantages, such as the ablility to slowly 'heal', a must for the technologically inept Zentradi, who would otherwise lose their entire fleet to ignored malfunctions and deterioration.
