  1. Since I live in the UK, I already knew about this DVD...and passed on it! Since the show (like quite a lot of classic 70s/80s anime) is basically an unknown quantity in the UK, there's no chance that all 52 episodes will ever be released over here (although it would be nice ). Since WEP have been busy in actually licensing the show in other countries, rather than just sitting on the rights completely, and given the fact that they have announced a major Voltron DVD release for 2005, I personally think the chances are good for a R1 release of Saber Rider. And naturally, any R1 release of Saber Rider would be bound to consist of more episodes (maybe even all 52) than the sole UK DVD!
  2. Well, the "next best thing" to that happened a while ago, when a HK DVD set of Space Runaway Ideon Part 1 was released, containing episodes 1-19 with English (and Chinese, obviously!) subtitles. Unfortunately, since that release, the HK DVD rippers are unable or unwilling to touch any 70s or 80s anime series anymore, and Part 1 of Ideon was all we got, with the rest of the episodes in limbo (for those who don't understand raw Japanese). It might be possible to track down some Part 1 sets for a very cheap price, since it's only half of the series, with the rest unavailable in that format.
  3. I dunno...that's what I was thinking when I first heard about the R2 Dorvack set being released. But since then, it's become painfully clear that the Taiwan/HK DVD "re-makers" have decided to concentrate their efforts elsewhere. I don't even remember what the last 70s/80s anime release from them was, and prospective releases of GE999, SPT Layzner and Dirty Pair TV all (as far I I know) came to a halt last year, with no sign of a resumption of those shows in particular, or a release of any 70s/80s shows that have subsequently been released on R2 DVD. I guess I'm going to have to continue saving for the R2 Dorvack set...
  4. I'd love to see this show too! Not only due to the TF connection, but also because what little I've seen from the show gives off a certain "early 80s mecha vibe" which automatically makes it a must see in my book! I believe the main reason that copies of the show were so hard to find, is that the show was (unusually) not granted a home video release of any kind, so any copies going around would presumably be from the original telecasts in Japan. However, the complete series was finally released on DVD in December last year, so finding decent quality copies is not necessarily as hard as before. The more cynical part of me wishes that the show had been released on DVD at least a year earlier than it was; it would have made for a very interesting HK set, before they gave up on older anime!
  5. As far as I know, Parasite Dolls is set in the same world as the 13-part A.D. Police TV series. One thing to make perfectly clear is that the A.D. Police TV series is set in a different world to Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040. Some sources at the time of the show's release claimed that the two were connected, but having watched them both I can safely say they are not. Of course, both TV shows are still based on the same shared universe comprising both the original Bubblegum Crisis and A.D. Police OAVs from the late 80s/early 90s.
  6. Well, I've only heard of them but never actually seen them firsthand since I don't believe they were ever reprinted. The Moon Knight manga was apparently drawn by Gosaku Sakurada and appeared in TV-Kun magazine, presumably at some point in the 1970s. Not too sure about the Hulk one though. I think it may have run at the same time as Ryoichi Ikegami's Spider-Man. The only reference I recall about the manga was a brief mention in an article one of the old UK Hulk annuals (which also contained UK originated Hulk comics), which talked about how the character was handled all around the world. Original strips in both the UK and Japan were mentioned, with an intriguing description of the Japanese version being "...more gruesome"! I liked some of the X-Men manga, but having yet another comic strip adaptation of the animated series (in addition to Marvel's US adaptations) did seem a little like overkill to me!
  7. Marvel's relationship with Toei lasted well into the 80s with many of their animated co-productions, including episodes of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends just a couple of years after this live-action...effort! Marvel were promoting themselves quite a bit in Japan in the 1970s. Apart from this live action version of Spidey, there were also mangas of Spider-Man (different from the live-action version as I'm sure many will know), the Hulk and Moon Knight. Not sure if Marvel had anything else made in Japan during that time, but it is interesting to know about!
  8. Yeah, I guess at the end of the day, he does have a right to do with his creations as he pleases. It's just that the changes he's making are probably flat out insulting the many special effects crew that originally worked on the films and helped them become the successes they were. The most hypocritical thing about Lucas' comments regarding this new Three Stooges DVD, is that he's still complaining even though the original versions of the film will still be available. Unlike the original trilogy, which I prefer since it's not only the version I grew up with, but since I also find a lot of the new blatantly obvious CG effects very distracting. As has been said, the best solution would be to make both versions of the trilogy available. Even Lucas' friend Spielberg acknowledged this with the disastrous new CG enhanced version of ET, the DVD set of which specifically included the original cut of the film along with the new one.
  9. That's a good point that holds up when talking about Star Wars, but I don't remember any stories of Lucas consulting with Irvin Kershner for The Empire Strikes Back. And since Richard Marquand has been dead for 17 years, I think it's pretty safe to say that Lucas probably didn't pass along any ideas for a revamp of Return of the Jedi before the actual director of the film passed away.
  10. Didn't ADV recently claim to be shortly announcing the release of a robot anime that fans would "lose control of their bowels over"? Would this not fit the bill quite nicely?
  11. Since I have both the R2 DVD and the UK tape called "Clash Of The Bionoids" (although it is the complete unedited English version of the film), I was recently able to burn a DVD+RW using the R2 DVD picture and the sound from the tape. I think it worked out pretty well, if I do say so myself! Using the R2 picture as a source does mean however, that my homemade version differs from the original English-language print in a couple of ways: 1. The English version has a different credit at the opening & English translated credits at the end (although since all versions of the film now end with the concert footage from Flashback 2012, this is a moot point) 2. All the Zentradi-speaking scenes originally had subtitles on the Japanese release. Since everyone spoke in English on the English-language release, these subtitles were actually removed from the prints. My original plan was to try and include both English and Japanese soundtracks, along with subtitles, but I gave up on that pretty quickly!
  12. Thanks for the info so far guys - it seems as if my observations were accurate, that only extremely recent stuff (bound to be licensed) makes it to boots of R2 DVDs, with the majority of the other releases being rips of R1 stuff, which is really annoying. therealfolkblues: I already knew about all these shows and importanime, and was very happy to get the last major release of Yamato myself (but not before I bought all of Star Blazers first!). Vinny: You're probably right about the clip coming from that DVD with all the openings, I didn't think of that myself. However, the only stuff I was expecting to see on DVD was stuff that would've been easy to source, since all the stuff I listed that hasn't been come out is in fact already (or at the very least, forthcoming) on R2 DVD anyway. I'm not looking for boots of really hard-to-get stuff (although that would be nice) since its rarity would make it an unlikely choice for a release anyway. I was just after stuff that's out on R2 DVD and thus, easily rippable Nightbat®: Thanks for the welcome! The thing about all this that's really annoyed me the most is the fact that the three series I mentioned before; Dirty Pair TV, Galaxy Express 999 & SPT Layzner were simply stopped partway through. It would've been nice if they'd at least have finished those series (especially GE999).
  13. Since Macross World is a well established forum that doesn’t shoot people for even suggesting the existence of bootleg DVDs (OK, maybe I’m exaggerating a little…), I’m naturally asking my questions here. I used to look forward to seeing just what would be the latest bootleg DVDs coming out of HK, and have been able to see quite a few shows that I would otherwise be unable to see completely AND understand at the present time, like Urashiman, Cat’s Eye, Mazinger Z, L-Gaim, Dragonar, etc… Now, it’s one thing to have bootleggers put out DVDs based on modern shows that are 100% guaranteed to get licensed in R1 anyway, and I think that this is a waste of time, money and resources. But it’s quite another thing when they were putting out sets (admittedly of varying subtitle quality) of old shows that are not very likely to ever be released officially (especially since a lot of highly sought-after old shows were made by Toei, who are fast gaining a reputation of being difficult to deal with). Something has obviously happened to the supply chain of booted stuff from HK, since series such as Galaxy Express 999, SPT Layzner and Dirty Pair TV have been stopped after one release each. Other obvious releases with potential that have seemingly been ignored would be the R2 Yamato movies, original Harlock series, Dorvack, other 70s Super Robot shows, the three Japanese G1 Transformers shows (I’m particularly surprised that no one touched these) and many more. I know that they’re unofficial, but for people who don’t actually understand Japanese there’s not many alternatives. If any of this stuff was available anywhere with subs, then I’d get them (like the official Galaxy Express movie DVDs from S. Korea). My questions essentially are these; exactly how long has it been since the last substantial release of an old show/movie on HK DVD (my guess is that it’s been about a year – I didn’t think too much of the longer gap between releases at the time) & does anyone know anything about why the supply chain has unquestionably stopped? Oh, just one more thing, after downloading the OP for an old show called Ai Shite Night (also known as Rock ‘N Roll Kids), I noticed a familiar symbol in the corner of the picture. Anybody know anything about this release, such as exactly what it’s called? I’ve naturally looked under all the alternate titles I could think of and came up with nothing, any help would be appreciated.
