  1. Actually, those stats only stand for the U.S. fanbase. 7 was actually the most popular series until Frontier arrived, and all across the board, II has been the most hated.

You know I knew that 7 fared better in Japan but I honestly didn't expect it to be the second most popular Macross title. Then again it does explain how something like Gundam Seed was so damn successful over there.

OP, you sound like you have the same basic mindset as me about Macross, the magic and hocus pocus stuff is garbage. The minmay attack goes from psy ops to `song energy`, wtf? I recommend you stop with Macross II and disregards 7, Zero, Plus and Frontier from the continuity. If you want more story get a PC Engine and a Saturn and track down the canon games.

You lost credibility the moment you threw out Plus seeing as how it has least amount of magic and hocus pocus garbage than any other entry in the series.

Well I guess I didn't quite know the can of worms I was opening when I posted this thread. I haven't seen Robotech in years now. HuLu has the english dub version of SDF:M available for viewing, which is what I watched a few days before ZERO.

I think maybe I should go back and say that I didn't totally hate ZERO, just that it was quite a shock to be confronted with so many "magical" elements in a show that I had always associated with technology and a "reality" based story. Kind of like some people hate the 3rd Matrix movie because it goes way too far into spirituality and heaven/hell parallels which is in contrast to the first movie, which has a few undertones but unless you really pay attention are very easy to miss.

Reading some of the posts here actually help to make more sense of the whole thing for me. When I originally watched ZERO it was late and I was very tired. Would you guys recommend Mac7 before an encore viewing of ZERO?

To be frank, the majority of Macross does flow closer to the "magical" elements in Zero than the "reality" based story found in the original. I personally don't care for Mac 7 or Frontier but those sagas account for the lion's share of Macross. I honestly couldn't recommend Mac 7 to anyone but the I also know I'm in the minority as far as Macross fans go.

  2. Did Guld survive at the end of the Movie version of "Mac-Plus" because they show his plane later having been thrown in to orbit by the explosion and his helmet is still intact?

I assume he was still severely injured by the violent maneuver could he have survived?

There is no way Guld could have survived, the Gs utterly destroyed his body.

  3. The show was gorgeous no doubt but what the hell was going on with a giant birdman who eats a young native girl and then kidnaps her into space? One of my biggest attractions to Macross originally was its plausibility, even if the entire show was fantastic with space dogfights against a numerically superior army of alien clones, it was rooted in reality. Now I'm not against "magic" and other such fiction but I just felt like I was blind sided, almost betrayed by the franchise when the story took the turn that it did. I've not seen Macross 7 but I plan on downloading it soon and I'm hoping that by having already been surprised by Zero that I can enjoy it. Frontier looks promising to me and perhaps a little closer in spirit to the original. Anyone else feel this way? I invite you all to pick apart my posting and show me where and how I'm wrong.

As others have stated, the biggest problem is that you went straight from the original Macross series with Robotech mindset to Macross Zero, a series which was suppose to help bridge the gap from Macross to Mac 7/Frontier. Macross Zero makes little sense as a strict prequel to Macross and by viewing it as such you get a royally ****** up story. Aside from Roy and the VF-0, there are no clear cut ties to the original series which would explain how a fan such as yourself could feel betrayed.

However when viewed as the first chapter to the entire Macross universe, Zero makes perfect sense especially after viewing Mac 7 and Frontier. Trust me the stuff in Zero is realistic compared to the over the top nature of Mac 7. As Keith said, you are dealing with a Super Robot Pilot in a realistic universe (more specifically, a singing plot device).

Generally speaking, the original Macross, DYRL, and Macross Plus are the most well received. Frontier is more geared towards the current anime crowd so it may seem a little juvenile for fans of the original series. Zero was, as you can tell, not met with universal praise but it does have it's share of loyal fans. Mac 7 is the most off the wall series in the Macross universe so it gets the most hate.

  4. i think there are a confusion i speak about the vf x4 that is a early prototype but different plane of the vf 4 until i know the vf x4 is not even transformable

Oh my mistake. If we are talking about a fighter only VF X4 then it is completely doable with spare VF-1 parts. While it would be feasible for Yamato to comes out with a VF-X4 kit, there is still the problem of consumer demand. Assuming that the VF-4 doesn't have a high enough demand to justify a new mold, would the much lower demand for the fighter only prototype even be worth the effort for a kit?

  5. i agree with each point of view that all of you mention but if check the list there are only valks that need a few parts (in some cases only made one piece) to give us new vf and i think in the posibility that no sell a complete toy maybe only a convertion parts and let us decide if want it i suppose that reduce the cost both companies and customers

vf 0d (wings, cockpit 2 seats, cover cockpit, spoilers and head)

reactive armor (the vf 0s is already)

vf 1dragon (all the body of plane but the nose cone and cockpit is the same that vf 1)

vf 1 lauch booster (the vf 1 is already)

armor for vf 1 gerwalk mode (the vf 1 is already)

convertion parts for made the vf 1ar, vf 1jr and vf 1sr (head, gunpod and fast pack)

vf x4 (in the image you can see that made it only with reorder the parts and conbined with the fast pack of the vf 1)

    vf 11target (cockpit)

    vf 22b (wings)

    yf 25 (head)

yf 27beta (nose cone and head)

and i missed the rocket launcher, weapon set for vf 0 and yf 19

That list is fine except for the VF-4. While the fighter mode is just a matter of rearranging a Fast Pack loaded VF-1, the battroid mode would require all new parts to complete. The VF-4 cockpit folds in like the SV-51 or the VF-25, it isn't just sitting vertically like the VF-0, VF-1, or VF-11. The hip mechanisms would also need to be radically different to account for the new cockpit and the arms would need heavy retooling.

In the end, the legs from the VF-1 are the only part that could be used for the VF-4 and even then they would need to be modified to some extent.

  6. I'd recommend the later release of the YF-19. The earlier releases were problematic too.

Generally it's a good idea to avoid eBay for Yamato stuff.

Amiami or HLJ. Others I checked are sold out.

I wouldn't completely rule out places like eBay or Amazon. Granted they should never be your first place to go for valks, they can be pretty helpful for accessories like Ghost Booster, Strike Packs, Fast Packs, and Fold Boosters.

That said, along with hlj and amiami, I found that angolz and over-drive are pretty good places to order from.

  7. While it may not be that difficult to create those valks, there is no guarantee that they'll be a high enough demand to offset their production cost. Yamato can't risk manufacturing a valk that won't sell and Bandai is content with the cash Frontier is bringing in.

  8. The anniversary DYRL VF-1S and most recent VF-1 valks are safe. For a comprehensive list of the older VF-1 releases you can take a look here.

    http://anymoon.com/blog/2010/03/01/yamato-160-v2-1-low-vis-vf-1s-focker/

As stated earlier, Yamato's VF-11 and Bandai's VF-27 are damn near perfect so if you want a safe valk those are your best bets. For the most part, all of Yamato's Mac 7 valks are pretty good though the original Plus versions of the YF-19 and YF-21 might be floppy. Anything from Macross Zero is risky and Bandai's VF-25 are floppy. So in short.

    Yamato

    SV-51 Ivan - Avoid

    SV-51 Nora - Slightly Risky

    SV-51 CF - Slightly Risky

    Early VF-0S - Avoid

    Recent VF-0S - Slightly Risky

    VF-0A - Fairly safe?

VF-1 - Recent releases should be safe

    Konig Monster - Really floppy

    VF-11 - Perfect

    YF-19 - Slightly floppy

    VF-19 - Safe

    YF-21 - Should be safe

    VF-22 - Safe

    Bandai

    VF-25 - Floppy

    VF-27 - Perfect

    Konig Monster - Safe (Perfect?)

  9. The answer lies in the reason why Guld is on meds, he's prone to extreme rages.

Wait I thought those meds had to do with piloting the YF-21 not his own personal health. The report highlighting Guld's aggressive tendencies was examined by Millard well after project Super Nova started so they couldn't have put him on pills to control an anger management problem nobody knew he had.

  10. Gulds flashback clearly shows him forcing Myung to the ground and ripping her clothes open exposing her breasts - maybe rape is too strong a word but its definatly a sexual attack. I would suggest that the only reason we dont see a full on rape is that its unnessacery to show such a graphic act in the context of the OVA but i always got the impression that the incident was more than what was shown, which was already pretty shocking.

If you dont think there was any kind of attack at all then i would suggest its you who is missing it... totally missing it...

Well Myung does throw herself at Guld later so I seriously doubt it was rape. He definitely assaulted her but given how Myung and Isamu treated him after the incident, I always got the impression that when he saw himself in the mirror he bolted out of the room. I just can't see Isamu and Myung behaving as civilly as they did around Guld if the guy literally raped Myung in front of Isamu back in high school.

  11. I agree about Macross Plus being the best example of what would make a better overall "feel". It seems like all of the anime shows that I see here and there are always putting in obvious forms of fanservice. Kind of gets me irked whenever I see them crop up in a show that I was just starting to enjoy.

So out of curiosity, was the last section of Plus a buzz kill for you? Plus felt like a great side story, completely detached from the original series then BAM...grand finale over the SDF-1.

Macross Plus isn't discussed much because it's universally praised. People post about what they hate--see Macross 7. :)

People like to argue---if everyone agrees, not much is said. Plus is great, and everyone agrees with that. :)

If that is truly the case, why is there discussion about the original series and DYRL? There is barely any venom out there for those two sagas yet they are still brought up more than Plus.

  12. I would say Takara is the major mold-milker. Bandai, not so much. Remember they had the Macross 7 licence for two decades and did not let go until recently, and yet only gave us four toys, two molds. They could have made more variations: a VF-19F, but no. A VF-19P, but no. A VF-17T, but no.

This is probably the only time I'll see the words "Takara" and "mold-milker" together in the same sentence without any mention of the word "Transformers".

  13. I pretty much share your opinion on Macross Plus and its still my favourite of the franchise. Thats why even though i like the look and colour scheme of the Double Nuts im wondering if it will scratch my itch to have the complete set of Macross Plus valks.

Yeah Macross Plus drew me back to the franchise as well, to this date it is still one of my favorite OVAs of all time. After Plus, I went to Mac II and DYRL, was driven away for a while by M7, pulled back in by Zero, and driven away again by Frontier :p . As for which flavor of YF-19, I'm going with BoP myself seeing as how the orange will look better next to the VF-0S and VF-1S :D .

  14. I've realized that the VF-0S I have is not tight at all. <_< At first I was happy about it, I thought the QC was good, but now after a few transformations, nothing seems to stick together. My VF-1S is super tight still, all the joints lock together nice. My VF-0S just seem loose, as if some kid had been playing with it for years. It holds together in fighter mode okay, but as soon as I put it down on its landing gear or move it around a bit, it starts to want to fall apart and sag. For example, not only does the nose sag, but the vents don't fit flush against anything. There are gaps everywhere. Ah well. Disappointed for sure, conidering my VF-1S and SV-51 are excellent. Pondering now if its worth it to spring for the Ghost.

Well at least you lucked out with an SV-51, Ivan's is now on back order on hlj and the thing wasn't even on sale. I can't say that I'd be comfortable with gambling $200+ on a potentially floppy bird with a history of exploding thighs <_< .

I will say that I am going to get a ghost booster as soon as one becomes available. I currently have my VF-0S next to my Fast Pack loaded VF-1S and I have to say that as good as it looks it feels somewhat off. The VF-0S actually looks smaller than the VF-1S because of the extra height the Fast Packs add.

  15. Short answer is: at your own risk. I got one, cracked limbs, got a second one, never transformed it except once when new to confirm everything is right, btw, that's how I found one of the legs on the first one was cracked. Same problem reported and illustrated years ago by fellow member. Just search old posts and you'll find the info you want.

Damn that sucks, I can't believe that it is still an unsafe valk. Well thanks for the info, I'll definitely start digging through the old posts.

  16. Well if you don't want to transform them maybe you could look into models, a lot cheaper and easier to find. As majestic as the toys can be I can't justify buying a toy I don't transform for the price they are selling at. That said I only buy transforming macross toys lol.

I know it sounds weird, but to me it isn't authentic Macross if it doesn't transform. Also just because I normally go with the hangar look doesn't mean that I won't have something in Gerwalk or Battroid mode standing around for a change of scenery every now and then.

  17. ivanov's sv has never been re-issued/fixed. it's a shame because it's such a beautiful mecha. sorry dude.

Seriously? Wow that sucks, I wonder if that is part of the reason why Ivanov's is the only available SV-51 that isn't currently on sale at Angolz or hlj. I swear it is as if anything baring a skull insignia is cursed to be defective. Barring the recent TV version release of the VF-1S, anything with a skull is a gamble :(

That said, is floppiness the only problem with Ivanov's SV-51? I don't care for displaying transformed valks since it feels somewhat tacky imo so as strictly a fighter plane does Ivanov's SV-51 hold up at all? Can anyone who owns an Ivanov SV-51 shed some more light on the matter?

  18. Well after branching out of the VF-1 line and picking up a VF-0, I've grown attached to the larger valks and I was wondering if Ivanov's SV-51 was ever improved from the initial batch like the VF-1S and VF-0S were. I know that Nora's and the mass produced SV-51s are relatively safe but I never ever hear anything about Ivanov's. Am I still chancing a floppy mess if I order one now?

  19. I would rather not have the next Macross project tie in with existing characters outside of vague references (Focker piloting award, a picture of Sheryl on some obscure magazine in the background, etc). It would be weird to break the Macross tradition of either seeing your favorite character violently killed off in a blaze of glory or simply never hearing from them ever again after the end of their series. So far Roy, Max, and Milia are the only characters to appear in different eras and I'd like it to stay that way.

Besides, I can't be the only person here who didn't like Frontier :p
