  1. I remember renting that my local comic shop back in the early 80's. Or it may have been the Harmony Gold pre-robotech version. It was certainly more "pure" than Robotech, and I was pissed that's all there was until the Robotech came out (and befor I found the real thing, dubbed).

    I do remember the names not being quite so americanized. Misa's name was Lisa Hayase in the dub.

    Sorry everyone, didn't realize how far in the past that post was when I replied to it. :p

  2. It was never released on DVD, not even the bootleg DVD's have the English dub.

    But it was officially released here in the USA on VHS. The Japanese subtitles were even removed, so it's a clean video.

  3. Seems that way... Macross 30 seems to have been kind of a big deal, since the Bandai DX version of Leon Sakaki's YF-30 Chronos wasn't the only one they made for it either. IINM, they've also done Rod Baltemar's YF-29B Percival and the YF-29s flown by Ozma Lee and Isamu Dyson in the game.

    I loved Macross Frontier, and thought Macross Zero was pretty fine as well. Macross 7 was the only one that didn't really do anything for me (initially). I've warmed to 7 in the past year or two.

    I watched 7 a way while back, thought it was ok (good to see Max, Miriya and Exedor again. But It seemed like there was too much filler and repeated battles. I think it would have been way better if they tightened it up to perhaps 36 episodes, trim some of the fluff and concentrate on the the 2 or three story arcs that were intertwined in it.

    That said, I'm psyched to have more Macross, in any form, coming in. I'm rewatching Frontier again now (started after hearing the news of the new show). I loved Yamato 2199, with the updating and filling of logic holes, and would be totally up with a similar treatment, but I'll take new stories as well.

    I do think it might be hard to go backwards, timewise. People are all conditioned to VF-25/29 levels of performance...having VF-1's doing this stuff would seem a bit much for 2009 (and we can handwave a lot of the advances for the 25's 'cuz it's far in the future).

    I could deal with a chage of location from one of the island fleets, though. Shaking it up somehow would be good. I didn't see the 30'th stuff, I presume it was some sort of race concept? Being set on some colony world set up by one of the fleets would be fine, but might seem too similar to SDFM unless the "enemy" is different enough.

    But as long as it has good songs, a decent lover triangle and SOMETHING that goes in gerwalk mode I'll be happy. :}

  4. I can understand this if you're talking about some other comic...but this is Macross the First. You've seen SDF Macross, haven't you? If so, you know most of the dialogue from Vol. 1 already, and while the details differ in Vol. 2, the overall story doesn't.

    Anyone tempted to check the book out already knows the plot. So the whole "I can't read it" argument doesn't really wash with me.

    One can call it laziness, I suppose. I have seen SDFM (though not recently), so I know the story and the basics behind it. But there is obviously some differences and subtleties that will be lost if I can't read it.

    Like I said, I'm willing to put up with a scanlation as a stop-gap measure (with the understanding that the translation may not 100% accurately convey the meaning of the text, unless done by the creators), but I still want books in my hand that I can read, and am ready to buy them when they come out, despite possibly having read the story from scans beforehand.

    I have seen so many crappy titles that managed to end up with english versions in the book stores it just seems like a real crime that HG screwed us over with regards to Macross.

    Does the licensing only apply to the US? If there is a market, could they print Macross in the UK or Australia? I'd buy those too, even if Minmei ended up readling like she was from London. :}

  5. Well why "buy" it if it's up on the web for "FREE".

    Because that's how I am. I would prefer to have it to read in bed at some point later on before I go to sleep, and having the book is better than having a laptop in this case. Plus, I DO want to support the original authors, and fully plan to if it ever comes out in english.

  6. For my specific case, I can't read Japanese, so while I would enjoy the art, I would prefer to have art and english text to go with it. While I do search the net for english scanlations, I would most certainly be there at Barnes & Nobles to pick up an english book form if it were available.

    In my case, I want it, and am willing to pay for it, but not unless I can get something I can fully enjoy and understand. I'll put up with online scans, but only as a stop-gap for having the actual thing in my hands from the original creators in a language I can read.

  7. My nerdiest moment would likely be getting a round car magnet (1' across) with the UN Spacy kite on it ( I have a nice graphic I photoshopped up for it), but it's friggin expensive, an the requirement is usually to purchase 100+ of the things. :p

    But yea, I'd get that on the my jeep. :}

  8. Probably not high on many people's interest lists, but for those who got into Macross via Robotech it may have some importance. He died on April 17th of a Heart Attack. For all the hate directed his way, Rest in Peace.

    Now, with that out of the way, how likely is this to change the licensing of Macross here in the US? How much control or influence did he have at HG at this point in time?

    I've read in spots that the Robotech movie is likely to concentrate more on the Southern Cross/Mospeada material, so does this indicate a possible loosening up of the Macross line?

  9. ... It wouldn't be crazy... it would be impossible. COMPLETELY opposing goals. A tank should be super HEAVY, as the heavier it is, the larger guns it can fire and the more armor it can carry... Nobody ever put a howitzer on a plane.

    A plane has to be as LIGHT as possible in order to FLY. Also be as maneuverable as possible.

    I remember a Mekton game, a long time back, where my mech was basically that -- the flying gun. It was light, with a heavy BFG.

    I made the miniature by taking a stub-winged 25mm lead fighter figure and attaching a peice of 3mm copper tube to it. Looked awsome, hit like a bastard (in game), but I needed the high dodge or I was screwed.

  10. :angry: Bah. I have to wait until they get enough put together to put out a standalone manga.

    Question...does Harmony Gold's license preclude manga as well? So someone like Viz could not get the print rights?

  11. Add this:

    java script:var%20t=((window.getSelection&&window.getSelection())||(document.getSelection&&document.getSelection())||(document.selection&&document.selection.createRange&&document.selection.createRange().text));var%20e=(document.charset||document.characterSet);if(t!=''){location.href='http://translate.google.com/translate_t?text='+t+'&hl=en&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie='+e;}else{location.href='http://translate.google.com/translate?u='+escape(location.href)+'&hl=en&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie='+e;};

    as a new shortcut on your browser's bookmark bar.

    Whenever you want to translate a page (in any language) to English, just click it and BAM translated by the almighty wintermu...err Google.

    Cute idea,but how do you do that? I've tried several times and ways with firefox, but can't seem to create such a thing.

  12. Another thing that made me like macross? GERWALK. I mean there are transforming machines that go from vehicle to robot and back, but it is one of the first to incorporate 3 modes :)

    Oh yea, that's my favorite mode as well, always seemed the coolest. I have my VF at work in Gerwalk mode.

    Of course, seeing the quarter in MF go Gerwalk just made it all the better. :}

  13. I realized how cool Macross was the moment that I saw my very first episode of it as Robotech. I missed the first episode of it and found out about it from my best friend who had seen the first episode the day before.

    Macross became even cooler to me when I saw DYRL for the first time. This was about a year after Robotech came out. DYRL was also the very first anime that I saw in its original language.

    Fo me it was probably when I rented the proto-macross first two episodes from my local comic shop. This was the first one that Harmony gold did, and it was called Macross, before they merged it into Robotech. All the RT voice actors, but with the original macross music (not the RT scores). Most names were the RT ones, though I think Misa was sort of half-way as "Lisa Hayase".

    I was hyped for the rest of it, but nothing for months until RT came onto TV.

    Kind of meandered away from the series (and anime in general) after I was married and busy with work, but in the past few years have refound myself. I got a torrent of DYRL and got back in, finally got to see M7 (It had some good points, but song-repeat-overload was bad -- it would have been better had they trimmed about 1/3rd the fluff and repeats and tightened up the storyline). I also got and saw M0 (kinda meh for story, but the mecha visuals were excellent). I think I saw M+ a few years earlier through netflix and though it was ok. MII I only saw as the 6-episode compilation, so the love story bewteen the reporter and the Military girl (names escape me) seemed rushed...was there a full 26 episode season, of is the 6 all there is? I was not thrilled with the Macross getting nuked.

    Finally saw frontier this year and enjoyed it. There is still lots of room to play in this universe, so hopefully they can explore it with some additional series, or by following on MF with some OAVs

  14. I always like to think that is what really happened to the Megaroad-01, bad Jump calculation and ooops, there went 50+ years.

    (Which if I'm calculating right means it's 76 days or so for those doing the fold)

    Yeah, yeah, no cookie for me...

    It's doubtful that they would go this route, keeping the legendary mystery intact, but it does allow for Misa, Minmay and everyone to be found alive and in their prime. :}

  15. Considering the distance involved in SDFM, the faults were probably a non-issue. No one in SDFM was really observed/commented on folding more than a few light hours. The faults don't seem to come up in MF short of dozens or hundreds of light years. Bodol Zer might've came across some, depending where they were prior to attacking Earth, but who are they going to tell?

    There were no fold faults impeding M7 because the show's incredible obsession with music Basara's ego spiritia consumed all of the writers' attention neutralized them. Thus they were a non-issue. :rolleyes:

    Didn't Max, Misa, Hikaru and Kakizaki feel the fold took hours but in reality it was days? Considering how Michael told Ranka that any trip to rescue Alto would also be days (though the actual subjective trip was hours), it seems to be somewhat similar.

  16. Macross folds seem to be based roughly on 3 factors. The distance that needs to be traveled, the energy that can be gathered in the engines themselves, and the previous unknown (fold faults).

    Perhaps it's sort of like Saberhagen's FTL concept, where certain areas of space are "dirty" and make FTL more troublesome.

    Thinking this way, in the original series there was no talk of faults, since out in the spiral arms (near Earth) there is less mass and stars, so less fold faults. With MF more towards the core there is more interference and thus more faults.

    That would allow for a moderately in-canon reason why SDFM has no mention of it (by the Zentradi) and it's a constant topic for MF.

    It's been a while since I saw M7, so I can't remember if they mentioned fold faults, but they may also have been further out.
