  1. I cannot speak as a certified psychologist on this but I have seen the effects of rape first hand... in a situation close to this one.

When I was in college I lived in a flat with 5 other people, three guys and two girls. One of the girls was a quiet, introverted fashion student who was with us only because we seemed like a well mannered group and she was friends with one of the guys. As the semesters went by we threw a lot of parties and we all got pretty close to each other. One night during a rather raucus party she was accosted by one of the other guys who lived with us. They had always had a sort of smoldering thing but they never went beyond that (and he had a girlfriend). Needless to say long story short we all woke up the next morning to find them missing. We thought nothing of it as we all came and went in the loft regularly. Later on that afternoon the guy comes back and goes over to his corner of the loft, gets some of his things and leaves. Once again, nothing too out of the ordinary or weird. That night the girl comes back to the loft and it is obvious she has been out all day who knows where and is very disheveled. I and another guy tried to talk to her but she would just ignore us. This sort of "ignoring" went on for a week. Then we all started wondering where "the other guy" went, he never came back to the loft and no one heard anything from him. We later found out from talking to some people in the building that they thought the guy had raped the girl on the roof of the building the night of the party. Needless to say we were all a bit skeptical but events were definately turning towards something not right having had occured. Another week later and "the girl" moved out of the loft and dropped out of school all together. That was when we found out it was true that she had been raped by one of our friends that night. It really puts the zap on you to learn that two people you lived with for a time had something like that go down. You find yourself saying things like "(guy's name) would never do that... would he?" and "(girl's name) wouldn't let that happen, she knew (guy's name) too well..."

In the end we found out that the girl (as of 1997 when I talked with my old roomates last) was almost an emotional wreck still, living at home with her parents. She never finished school and didn't even have a job. That one incident just derailed her entire life.

On the flip side of the coin I have heard stories of women that move on with their lives and somehow justify or cathardically purge those emotions and bad experiences... think of all the "Battered wives" there are in the world and how their husbands hit and molest them and they keep coming back. Human psyche is a weird area to tread, some people are resilient and let nothing effect them while others fall apart at the slightest rock of the boat.

Then again we are also talking about a fictional story written by some science fiction writers to flesh out a freaking giant robot story here folks...

  2. Does it have to be limited to anime? I currently have the 1/60 VE-1 and VT-1 plus 5 sets of FAST packs on order with VEX... that will be about $460.

Most I ever spent on a collectable ever: $780 for my 12" GI Joe scale Vietnam Huey

Some other items of note that can be considered "toys" that where quite expensive:

$14,000 over five years to restore my camaro...

    $1,200 for a pre-ban SP2 rifle...

$2,100 for my new home computer...

    etc., etc....

  3. I had to vote my mind, which was "I do not like any of them"

To me they are filler, background songs that illustrate and fill in what would either be silence or composed music. I myself enjoy a lot of macrosses' composed orchestral music but it is all very dramatic and heavy-handed... stuff you can't just "listen to". To me, you cannont remove the animation from the music or the music from the animation but together they make the show.

... then again I tend to dislike most movie soundtracks...

  4. You don't remember Runaway? :o

Gene Simmons and his pissy girlfriend Kristie Alley?

Tom Selleck disarming a trashcan house robot with a revolver?

The highway chase scene with the reomote controlled bombs and the cop cars with HUDs?

... actually, this movie sucked now that I think about it.

    Bug detected! :p

  5. I still think people hate Macross 7 do to their perceptions of what Macross should be (Macross Plus). Macross 7 attacks your perceptions so much about Macross that you can turned off by it. I believe Kawamori did not intend Macross 7 to be your typical mecha anime.

I myself am not a big fan of "robot" anime... I just like good storytelling. I have to also say that I am not a fan of Macross Plus either. I dislike it also. I dislike Macross 7 for a lot of reasons, most of them have to do with personal taste. I personally think most Japanese rock music is annoying, and to hear it over and over and over again as an integral part of the show was just nails on the chalk board to me. Couple that with a very touchy-feely no one really dies let's sing! storyline just put the nails in the coffin. On the other hand the heavy handed relationship melodrama of Macross Plus, coupled with the lack of a real "enemy" or "struggle" in my mind was just way too much to take for extended periods of time. The reason I prefer Macross Plus to 7 is because it gets to the point and tells it's story in 4 episodes... 7 just drags on and on and on... and the "side stories" that cause 7 to drag never really get resolved, they just contribute to the growing malaise of the show.

If Macross 7 had been a 10 episode OAV I might not have hated it as much as I do and if Macross Plus had been a sprawling 45+ episode TV series I would have died of boredom. Either way I watched them both in their entirety and gave both a chance... but I don't re-watch either of them. I think I should also say that I am also not so taken with Macross Zero at the moment either... maybee I just found pure macross in the form of DYRL and SDF TV to be the top of the mountian and see everything as a shallow imitator...

  6. For small arms, Mospeada is actually quite varied and complex. They have the ubiquitous Galant pistol which has three different configurations, the Wolf pistol which can be with or without suppressor, then they have those two larger rifle/pistol weapons that have boxy fronts (used by Ray in the "Inherit the Stars" episode and by Jim in the episode they are trying to evade the Inbits early in the show), then there is the Wolf SMG (the one Mint uses in episode two for two seconds till the mag runs out), the heavy assault rifle carried by Stick's mospeada, the rocket launcher carried by Houquet's Mospeada (and is man portable as seen in several episodes) and if you look even closer there are several other nameless one-off pistols and rifles that show up every other episode... throw in the limpet mines, grenades and a few other "made up just for the game" guns and you have a pretty thick arsenal.

Still, FPS is a bad idea...

  7. That's the reason I'm hoping someone will sell me their open figs. All I want is one normal Hikaru and one normal Minmay... If I buy them in the mystery boxes I'm liable to get 5 Mylenes... and that would bring about the deaths of many people at my hand. <_

  8. If you apply the principals of outdated Freudian psychology then that sequence can mean anything and everything from "he definately raped her" to "he wanted to rape her" to "he thought he raped her" all the way to "he really likes Isamu and wants to rape him".

How do we know that sequence is to be interpreted in the context of a dream in the first place? In my book it is a "revelation" or "flashback" sequence. Guld finally, through a bout of deep emotional stress, has a revelation as to the true events that took place. My father was a vietnam vet and he used to have very emotional flashbacks at times. Once I found him crying alone in the basement just saying "he's dead! he's dead!" and to this day I have no clue what he was talking about.

I would think if Guld had actually raped Myung the true horror of what he did would have come back him. His mind, having repressed it for so long, would have opened like a floodgate and shown him (and us) the true extent of the evil he did. On the flip side of the coin you can say that Kawamori took "Artistic License" and chose not to show something that graphic... but in the end something as vile and horrible as a rape would have had different emotional reprecussions to the people involved. "Japanese politeness" or not someone like Myung would not be so casual and forgiving to her rapist.

Either that or we are reading waaaaaaay too much into something that some writer wrote not knowing that a bunch of geeks would be debating it in a message board...

  9. New 1/48 VF-1s I'd like to see in the following order:

    - DYRL VF-1A Kakizaki (with fast packs)

    - TV VF-1A Brownie (CF) (with fast packs)

    - TV VF-1J Max and Milia (with fast packs)

    - TV VF-1A Max and Kaikizaki

and if they could eventually get around to it:

    - TV VF-1A Angel Birds

  10. But a torn shirt, a damn near rape, trying to kill a guy twice, and lying about it makes you a scumbag.

IMHO Guld Goa Bowman is a shmuck, I've never liked the character. But he is a very complex rival to Isamu. Macross Plus is one of those few outstanding animes that has complex characters who are neither good nor evil but just "real".

  11. But Kawamori went really far out of his way to show us Mylene almost getting raped in M7 Dynamite... I think if he went that far in M7 (what many see as a kiddie show) then if had intended for Guld to rape Myung he would have given a bit less nebulous of imagery. You don't have to show the act to get the point across but a torn shirt does not a rape make...

  12. I'm cash poor at the moment... both my car's insurance bills are due this month, I just dumped over 3 grand into office furniture and I still somehow have to come up with the cash to get my VE-1, VT-1 and 1/48 fast pack sets...

The Simpsons is a distant last on my list and will remain there, after all they are still on TV twice daily and new eps on Fox on sundays... I'll probably wait until they release all the season sets and offer them as one big boxed set in they year 2006...

  13. The facts of the matter the way I see them:

    - Max Jenius is captured in battle with hostile forces (the Meltrandi), making him a POW

    - Supposed deleted materials show that while a POW, Max "endoctrinates" the Meltrandi to the side of "culture"

    - Max then dons the Meltrandi uniform and flies a Meltrandi unit in combat against Bodolza fleet, presumably in the defense of the Macross

He is not so much a turncoat as he is an opportunist. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. His only option for helping the effort was to be super sized and fly a Q-Rau. My guess would be that if the UN Spacy was anything like a normal army they would hold an investigation to see if he did anything wrong while in this capacity, find him innocent and require he repatriate to the UN Spacy when it was said and done at the least. After all, it is just not propper to have a comissioned officer wearing the uniform of someone else and derelicting duty on an "allied" ship.

    EDIT: screwed up a sentence
