Wow, this discussion has been somewhat...sidetracked? lol

Personally I enjoyed the heck out of the movie. Even more so the 2nd time. But I got exactly what I was expecting.

Actually no, I retract that. In a way I got MORE than what I was expecting. I was expecting a clip movie, much like the 00 Gundam or Gundam Seed or Turn A Gundam ones. What I got was 50%-60% new footage, increased detail in some of the reused footage (ie, cockpit detail) and an entire mini-albums worth of awesome new songs (which made me change my mind about Mayn's Budokan concert in January and now Im desperately bidding in half a dozen auctions for tickets ^^; )

I got big explosions. I got eye candy on the big screen. And that was what I was expecting.

Seriously, anyone expecting MORE character development out of a 2 hr movie that covers half of a 26 (25?) episode series is just being unreasonable. Was a LOT of the character interaction and development cut? Yes, undoubtedly. It was cut to cram the basics into a much shorter format. But this is not DYRL, nor did it ever claim to be a similar sort of product. Its a repackaging of the story, not a retelling.

Who is it aimed at then? Easy question. The existing fanbase. Those who know the original intricately and are interested i seeing how it gets changed, what is added, what is taken away. Despite Kawamori's comment that he HOPED that the movies would allow those who had missed the series to experience Frontier (documentary on MUF bonus UMD) this is not who it has been made for or even marketed at. The fun of a show like this IS the changes and thats what the audience was totally digging both times I saw it. They know the characters and this knowledge is taken as a given. Hence the movie gets away with not explaining a whole lot of background stuff that it possibly should have. It still, however, manages to make better sense to a new viewer than trying to watch the latest Naruto or PureCure theatrical release without knowing any of those series respective backstories.

Once the first movie was revealed to be a clip movie, I expected way less than it ultimately provided due to many years of bad experience with other series clip-fests. It isnt meant to be a stand alone feature. And I think thats where a lot of opinion gets divided (although the split is USUALLY between those who see it in Japan along with all the marketing, tv coverage, concerts and tie ins and those who see it in the vacuum of watching it online...or anywhere outside of Japan pretty much).

For the record, I view the series as immensly superior to the movie, however the movie does add some very good stuff to existing scenes which needed some fleshing out as well as adding some eye candy and fan service.

Think of it less as DYRL and more like a cross betwen Evangelion 2.0 and the Z Gundam New Translations - a lot of pretty new animation on a story you already know and a few big WTF moments.

As for what happened to Nakajimas voice - she aged. Simple as that. She was 18 when she recorded the series and is 20 now. Her take on Ranka seems a little older now, but is still quite good (heck she was even doing a slightly deeper Ranka during the in character bits of the Budokan concert - check out the DVD or BR!)

Personally one of the biggest things about the movie for me was how they rerecorded ALL the dialogue. Some scenes came across quite differently and both Ranka and Sherryl had a lot more confidence (much like the Eva rebuilds). This is probably why I never noticed the pacing issues that some have been complaining about. Yes, the action DID all happen at the beginning and the end, but I was too entranced by the dialogue in the middle to really take notice. Or, maybe everyone else has ADD. Who knows?

Maybe the reasoning above seems like a copout to some of you, but I think its necessary just to enjoy the movie for what it IS. And the first step of that process is realising what it ISNT. It ISNT DYRL and it ISNT a substitute for the original series. IT IS a HELL of a lot of FUN though.

This is an extremely interesting take. Well I can't wait to see the movie myself but I'm curious, you mentioned that the first part of the movie has most of the action, does that mean the rest turns into a kind of slice-of-life version of MF? If so, I would probably enjoy the movie even more I don't think the movie should be judged so harshly considering it's the first of 2 movies and how much is being condensed.

Actually, now that I think about it, when the "liner notes" were first being released, I was curious as to why MW didn't have all this information already and why it was the Spanish community receiving it first. I'm not saying that the Spanish is incapable of receiving this information first but I found it strange that they were the only community that had received that information.

Alright everyone, I translated the most important part of the post which is everything after he says "Sobre lo de Ohnogi," which roughly translates to "About Ohnogi." Sorry I took so long but I just wanted to make sure things were in order and I was also juggling between a paper that's due

This post really did annoy me, mainly because he avoided the issue completely and kept making excuses rather then try and provide us with some solid evidence in which he never did. His explanation was weak and still doesn't excuse him for the false information.

Just a quick summary about the beginning which is just hot air considering all he talks about is how disappointed and disheartened he feels about Iker and Bau (other MG members and mods I believe) because they don't believe in him and how they didn't try hard enough to contact him in order to get his side of the story. Shaloom also pulls out the "we've even had drinks together" card and plays the sympathy role. Oh please, Shaloom is still in denial about how he was exposed and I for one won't forgive him at all for the fallacies he has spread.

Well enough of my rant and let's get to the good stuff, here's my translation of Shalooms response to Gubaba's great exposition (My translation is about 96% accurate aside from some typos and phrases unique to the Spanish language.) Also, whatever is in brackets and in red are my little side comments:

About Ohnogi,

I can write many reasons why I write these things. I wrote it because I believed it considering I listened to those web recordings, because I translated it without checking things based on my memory (and erroneously thought that he had written Macross Plus). In fact I wanted to make a new revision of the episodes and stuff, but I did not have time. My fault.

My mistake was that I published the info although if you go back and read my comments and the comments of others, we have always speculated and checked those speculations. (not to say that it's official) Many people have asked me to publish it on the portal [Portal refers to the front page of the site, not the forums.] and download PDF. I always refused (and multiple users should review their PM's) the reason I decided to omit this information was because it needed to be checked officially in the publications.

Many know that I've stopped buying printed materials, I suspended the purchase of Macross Chronicle and I have not even bought the novels for the cost of importation. Even I said several times on the forum, ignore the reason why the screenwriter's names weren't published.

My biggest fault is publishing things without a solid foundation and not being able to maintain my perspective of the official and speculated. I've already received 3 messages from people at Macross World (not Gubaba but other users) and I told them the same thing, that they were written for the community and the information was waiting to be checked in order to post it on the portal [Again, Portal refers to the front page of the site, not the forums.]. Actually, I was able to contact Bau via MSN who asked about the material for Macross Wiki. In which I refused (again) precisely because I wanted to make revisions of the same info.

In the portal (not in the forum for those that are doubting) everything that is published, it's physically possessed and that's why we manage the ISBN, catalog numbers for those that purchase and look/translate the source. Some people used this to take their frustrations out on me and took advantage of doing the same to the portal (this is where I applaud the attitude of bau and iker because they've published works there, as well as Axel Vant). Macross Frontier does not have their section published because there is no material on my part to make an analysis at the level of the other titles. Also because of my own laziness and bad time management, I have only finished the reviews for each episode. but there is no information regarding production or other information material because I don't have money at the moment to buy the material therefore, I've stalled it's publication.

To Gubaba (a huge fan of Macross), I would say that I appreciate your presence here and I am very sorry that he lost time to be following/translating this information. I personally admire him very much because since the old Macrossworld, he decided to be responsible for disseminating information to the community. And much of my years as a fan and how I disseminate the information is based on your methods. I'm very sorry.

And as things stand today. It is undeniable that people have already made their judgments, and they called me a traitor, mythomaniac, egocentric, liar, I suppose that in other forums they will have topics dedicated to me, and this can not be changed. Well I'll try to translate all that Shaloom's post to english, I'm argentinian and my english is somewhat decent I GUESS xD so, I'll give it a try, now.

And, Gubaba, the MG guys are looking at you with doubt, believing that you're some sort of "attention-whore" (couldn't think in a proper word to describe it), that's why some of them are saying that "let's get over this" thing, plus as you might know, in MG Shaloom is one of the most respected fans, super reliable with the info. Well at least now they'll think twice before believing everything he or anyone says.

So, I think you should stay cool and stop posting about it, because like you said, they're trying to minimize in some way the situation, like "this wasn't that bad you know".

Just keep Shaloom's response and be satisfied to know that you were right about all this.

This is great news, first 2 movies, then OVA and then for the 30th Anniversary we will have new TV series. Upcoming years will be very good for Macross fans ^^

that would be good fodder for the story, but I doubt it'll be the core. It strikes me as more logically being a new take on the second half of the show. Though it really depends on just how far "The False Songstress" goes. Still, two movies will cover the story a lot better than one.

Me too. They have a real chance to improve some of the more ignored characters here. Though movies are never known to handling chara development well... Still, who knows.

Although that is true, there's a first time for everything or as long as there's a chance, there's a possibility. I feel though that Kawamori is being kind of cautious with how he's handling these 2 movies and I have a feeling that we'll be in for a pleasant surprise

Ah, souka. I agree with you here, the ending to the TV series felt was ambiguous and I felt that Alto's feelings were the same. If they do resolve the ending to the LT in the movie then we better feel Alto's love

Well considering that Sheryl is on the poster, I would say that it is referring to her. Although a lot of Sheryl fans would be happy with the first part being more Sheryl-centric, I hope that is not the case. I like Sheryl and all but I would prefer if both parts had a nice balance to them rather than one part focusing more on the other.

From what I read in your post at Macross Generation, everything is perfectly fine Gubaba The only thing is that you're speaking in fragments but everything is grammatically correct and it's not a problem considering you don't speak Spanish. It's easily comprehensible. Although I think you should have taken a firm stance rather than apologize at the end with a sad smiley
