  1. I'd have to second the model choice if you're looking for accuracy. If you need help builing it, there's tons of threads here to help and you can ask us too ;) - MT

Models are for men. Toys are for little boys who think they are men, but like to vroom vroom vroom their little toys around their apartment staging renactments of epic battles from a kid's TV show aired almost 30 years ago.

  2. Sorry I was teasing you guys last week. Just meant it to be tongue in cheek. It's kinda a joke since we're all nerds by the mere fact that we're taking time out of our day to talk about anime. Clearly I thought the inter-site forum wars would be kinda amusing and clearly someone did not think that was funny at all. My bad.

  3. He mentioned he might tackle it after the Glaug, nothing is set in stone yet; something else may inspire him along the way and bump it to even later. I think you should aim for the range I mentioned and post in the sales forum, if that doesn't bare fruit, try a BIN or even a low starting bid regular auction on eBay.

How does that saying go? A thing is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it, or something... just look at the Auctions Of Great Absurdity Thread to see stuff go for what you may perceive to be ridiculous prices, but the buyer's perspective may be that those are normal, or acceptable, prices. And, to the risk of sounding like an a-hole, business is business, not everybody on eBay (or even here) knows that Cap't might, someday, maybe, get around to building a Cat's Eye kit. What if he never does it, and you gone and sold it for $50...?

I frankly don't care if I get an extra $50 for it, particularly if it goes to a friend on the board. HWR MKII was asking for it, and I'm inclined to give it to him... I'm just looking at my pile of "partially built" kits and it is really bugging me. Particularly since I know it will have to be majorly rescribed.

  4. $140 for an original Tanmen, or for Mike's cast?

I paid $115, S/H included, for Mike`s resurrection in '04, and I sold it 2.5yrs later for $230, S/H extra; maybe this can give you an idea of what yours is worth today.

I didn't know Captain America was gonna do one. I doubt I could get more than $50... I'm thinking of holding on to it. By the way, it is Mike's resurrection (I suppose this is a better "r" word than the other one).

It's the last rec... um, I mean resurrection I ever bought... and I don't plan on buying another one.

  5. How much do you think I could sell a partially complete Tanmen Cat's Eye for? The Fuselage and the wings are attached, but much of the detail is not. I'll upload pics tonight.

  6. Soon to be off my workbench... only took about a year and a half to complete. Not that it was all that hard... I blame it on the XBOX 360 and 4 kids. After I took some pics, I realized it still needs a fair bit of detailing to get rid of some of the problem areas. These are Jade Dark Hearts tiles. Thanks JDH! And thanks Mike for the rebel pilot and thanks Jim Botatis for the helmet stickers! Thanks Guy Cowen for the plaque. And thanks Ralphlee for talking with me about it on the message boards... true inspiration.

  7. Hi Guys

Well seeing as the macross toys are becoming so expensive (thankyou very much yamato and the AUD$) i've begun to look at the cheaper macross models kits. Now i use to make models a while ago now so i still sort of know how to make them but my question is are there 1/48 scale kits being made?

the reason i ask is that i like my big 1/48 yamato toys and i am worried that the 1/72 scale kits will be too small for my liking....

hopefully if i do start i can pick up some tip from the model maker on here

anyway thanks for the help guys

Toys are for kids, silly rabbit. You zooooooooom zoom zoom around the room and transform them for an epic battle against your teddy bears. Models are art meant to be admired. Each individual... not mass produced. You could argue toy customs that are painted are a form of art. I guess you could say the same thing about legos... but they just aren't in the same league as stuff like Master Cheng.

  8. Onezero over at SM is doing them. My own setup was very crude, and while I technically *could* have done them myself, it was very hit-or-miss and would have wasted too much lexan. I put the success of the project before my pride.

onezero generally doesn't do casting work. I assume he'll have one of his buddies like Blappy do it.

  9. You don't need two kits exactly.

What you need is to replace parts B7 and B8 with something else.

    1. Can use lots of putty to shape the exterior part of the leg and figure out how to install the aft landing gear door A10.

    2. Recast A3 and A5 with the internal attachments and the fins from B7 and B8.

    3. Manufacture A3 and A5 with polystyrene sheets.

    4. Find the B-club kit or a recast.

You will still need to keep B7, B8 (minus fin) and A4, A6 to make the SAP leg armor.

I hate shaping putty, do not have the materials to recast, polystyrene sheets are being shipped, do not have the B-club kit.

It boils down to the Time, Money, Skill formula. I am sacrificing money (cost of a kit that I already have) for the time it would take to do the other options.

On matter what the panel lines on the exterior of the legs will need to be carved or painted and the project will require Styrene and putty even if you had the B-club kit since it is for Battroid only.

Samurai Monkey made a recast. I was glad he did it, but it was one of his first. The quality of resin and the casting was pretty poor. He's gotten much better.

  10. I've had the thing laying around for years now and never did anything past making sure all the parts were okay inside. I searched on the boards but didn't really turn up too much info on it (could be my search skills just sucked on this one though). So how hard are these kits to assemble and do they require any extra parts not included in the kit? And this is probably the wrong place to ask this, but did anyone ever make re-casts of these?

I should mention that I've done tons of gundam kits and a few other kits, but never a resin kit.

Dude, why not just build it fixed? You really think you are going to play with it? If you are going to play with it, don't you think your time might be spent better building other kits? Seriously, who would ever bother to transform a resin kit? You work so hard to get it beautiful, but then they are so fragile that you break it and/or scratch the paint job trying to transform it. And why? Because you wanted to zoom it around your apartment? Seems silly.

  11. Hey thanks for the links, just made life of model building a little easier by having proper tools.

Dude... I feel like I'm giving you crack cocaine. It's a really fun hobby, but this stuff is addicting. I have a couple grand worth of tools and paint. And you don't want to know how much I spend on obscure resin kits. Remember I warned you!

  12. I don't have local store need to order most of those things. Whats a good online store to buy from? Tried Walmart didnt have anything I realy needed besides glue and of course tweezers and toothpicks.

My two favorites for everything are Micromark and Squadron. Hobbylinc has some nice prices sometimes. And finally, Hobby Link Japan has some great Japanese products that can make life easier. I'll make things easy for ya...

    http://www.micromark.com/

    http://www.squadron.com/

    http://www.hobbylinc.com/

    http://www.hlj.com/

and for airbrushes, you won't find much cheaper and better service than Dixieart...

    http://www.dixieart.com/

And while you're at it, you might want to pick up the Dremel Stylus. It has been a real time saver lately. I'm not sure where exactly to get the "I'm a model geek who is obsessed with a cartoon created 25 years ago" T-shirt. I think that came with my airbrush, but I'm not sure.

  13. Thank you Winterdyne that was alot of info I needed, this is my first resin model project. Heck my first model project in 15 years lol.

Welcome back to the hobby! First off, that is great news because toys stink and models are very cool. So build more models.

Now to answer your question. Sounds like you need to ease into the hobby before you tackle an expensive resin kit. That Moscato kit is a great kit, but it is still expensive. You'll be upset if you mess it up... and if you haven't modeled in 15 years you WILL mess it up. Buy some other cheap kits and practice on those.

I'd recommend reading some of the articles on Starshipmodeler.com and look around the forums. Aircraft Resource Center and Armorama are also good websites for building articles. I recommend SSM since it is where I hang out most and the community is really great. Ask any stupid question and you'll get a lot of well thought out responses.

A little glue lesson. Epoxy is usually stronger, but generally tougher to work with (since you got mix the two types together. CA (or superglue) is easier to use and comes in a variety of different viscosities (thickness). A trip to your local hobby store is in order for you!

Resin is tricky. First, it is hazardous to breathe so use water and wet/dry sandpaper to sand.

Normal enamel and acrylic paints to adhere well to resin, so you need to use a primer. You can use some automotive primer, but I'd recommend using Tamiya spray primer. It goes on smoother and less goopy.

For some heavier models, you may have "pin", which is a way of reinforcing the resin with metal rods (paper clips to metal hangers work well). But I don't think you have to worry on this kit.

There are a myriad of tools that will be helpful in your process. My top 10 are:

Hobby knife... with variety of razerblad attachments

    Emory boards (or other sandpaper)

    Hobby scissors/clippers

    Airbrush (dual action) and compressor

Glue... thin CA glue and thick CA glue. CA Accelerator makes things set quicker

Putty... bondo red automotive filler is cheap and great!

    Tamiya tape for masking

    Tweezers and/or hemostat

    Dental picks and/or toothpicks

    FUTURE!

Painting can be very tricky with an airbrush. You'll need lots of practice to get the hang of it. Might I recommed Tamiya tape to mask when painting. You don't know the frustration of using regular painters tape and seeing it ruin a great paint job.

If you are really serious about model building, there is a wealth of resources to start you on your journey. If you have unrealistic expectations about throwing this great kit together and making it look like John's stuff, then you are in for a rude awakening. Regardless, welcome back to the hobby! And once again... toys stink and models rule. Suck on that toy boys!

  14. Hey LTSO, haven't heard much from you in a while, and now here you are stirrin' the pot!

How is the little one? (ones?) I seem to remember you were part of the fairly recent baby boom here on MW.

Haven't been around in awhile... I figure my return would be to agitate the masses of toy boys on the board. What use is a message board if you don't have a little banter?!? Has grayson been around in awhile? He was my partner in crime against the toy boys.
