  1. AnimEigo attempted to get the 'DYRL?' license so they could release it alongside their HG sanctioned 'SDF Macross' DVD set. Unfortunately, they claim they were trying to track down the license and just could not figure out who actually owned it on this side of the pond. They eventually gave up because the paper trail was just too long.

  2. I remember this show. I rather enjoyed it at the time. I've seen part of an episode of the OVA sequel, it was pretty wretched. Barely connected to the original story, more comedic and fan-service based than anything else.

  3. I think my girlfriend's pretty much 'take it or leave it' with Macross. She likes it, but she's not huge on it. Just got through the tv series and the movie with her and a bunch of friends. Most of them are the same way on the franchise. My girlfriend did admit she liked the movie more than the series.

Strangely enough, she's one of the few people I know who absolutely adores Legend of the Galactic Heroes as much as I do...

  4. i'd always liked macross because its giant robots served a purpose: to fight giant aliens hand to hand.

Giant robots designed to fight other humans in giant robots for the sake of fighting in giant robots is lame.

Mac Zero is systematicly destroying my love of macross.

neat design, its just not for macross imho

Your logic escapes me. First you make a comment completely unrelated to Macross Zero, then say Macross Zero is systematically destroying your love of Macross. There's completely no connection between those statements and so your second statemement goes unexplained.

On an unrelated not I have to agree with Knight26's take on this Destroid. it looks like another Destroid, but not really any more advanced than it's predecessors, less advanced in a lot of ways. Of course Kawamori's design sense has changed in the years and that's going to reflect, but exactly like the VF-0 debate, it doesn't mean this really looks any more advanced. I'd take the good ol' Tomahawk over this one any day.

  5. I have to agree with those who have already pointed out several important factors:

1.) The VF-0 is much less streamlined compared to the VF-1. Sure, it's nopsecone, pointy feet, and sleek wings look more streamlined, but the body is bulky, with gas canisters blistering the fuselage in several places. Overall, the much cleaner looking VF-1 is the sleeker fighter.

2.) The one and only technology that the VF-0 has that the VF-1 doesn't is some form of active stealth (which is not neccesarily the same kind of active stealth found on the much later YF-19 and 21). When the VF-0 description says 'testbed for future variable fighters' you must remember that at that time the VF-1 counts as a future variable fighter. When the final VF-1 was delayed due to mass production issues with the nuclear engines, they took the jet engine based testbed and put it into combat. That's the way I read it, anyhow.

3.) The official stats, which you can find at the Macross compendium, clearly show that the VF-1 is superior in performance to the VF-0.

4.) The VF-0 looks better in the animation compared to 20 year old SDF Macross animation, this is to be expected. Making it look better with better animation techniques is not a retcon, it's simply better animation. I'd argue that the VF-1 in 'DYRL?' looks just as good, if not better. I also imagine that if the VF-1 shows up in M0, it will look every bit as sleek and nifty as the VF-0.

And to address another poiunt brought up, yes Macross Zero does have incredibly pretty animation, but it does not sacrifice the story for eye candy. I don't even know how that was brought up.

  6. It's not just the name, Harmony Gold has been claiming they own the exclusive rights to the designs, hance Yamato not being able to release their DYRL? Valkyries abroad.

Harmony Gold has backed off considerably since the court cases in Japan, though, so it's entirely possible all this is a mute point and that we'll see Macross Zero on DVD in US stores a year or so from now.

Also, saying that DYRL? wouldn't work even if everything was renamed, but something completely new using the same designs would work doesn't make sense. DYRL?'s story departed significantly from the tv series story. Enough, I'd say, to work under this possible loop-hole everyone is discussing, if everything was renamed. I just don't think it would work either way for the previous reasons.

  7. Probably too late, but as always if you could remind Yamato of a the steadfast, loyal, and somewhat fanatic following the VF-4 Lightning III has, we'll release the hostages as agreed...

  8. I'd direct you to the newbie questions thread, but there isn't one! So I'll just answer right here. Macross Zero takes place in like 2008. The Macross crashed in 1999. Work on variable fighters didn't start until a long while after the Macross had crashed. The Macross and it's proof of giant aliens is what caused the VF project.
