    I just received mine.

    Here are my initial impressions.

Image--First off, I never owned this on HD 1080 blu-ray, so I can't compare this with that.  For this 4K version, to my eyes, any and all grain has been completely wiped away.  It does not look like film.  The picture is clear and stable, but a lot of the painted background details look kind of smeared.  Some shots, and even some parts of the image look out of focus which could be from the original film source.  This is a 41 year old film.  There seems to be less detail on the characters.  It looks softer to me.  I would've liked to have the film grain, because I think overall detail was lost when the grain was removed.  In my opinion, I think this could've looked a lot better, but I doubt they are going to revisit this.  So I have to be happy with what I got.  Beggars can't be choosers.  I've owned this movie in so many different formats, and this is probably going to be the last physical version of the movie.  Its not perfect, and I paid a lot for it, but I'm glad I finally have it.

Oh, and the bloody gore is intact.

    Sound--The DTS-HD 5.1 sounds great.  No complaints.

Subtitles--Available in Japanese and English.  They can be turned off completely.  They look nice.  The songs have also been subtitled and appear at the top of the screen.  The songs being subtitled is a pet peeve of mine, but at least I can turn them off whenever I want.

I have mixed feelings about the image quality, but I never ever thought this would be released with English subtitles. So I'm counting this as a win.

    Again just my thoughts.

Thanks for the initial review Steady! Can you confirm if the set comes with the original version of the movie? If so, have you watched it and compared the image quality with the re-mastered version?

  2. I have the 4k Remastered edition pre-ordered from CDJapan. According to the description, this includes both the original Theatrical Release and the 2016 Enhanced version:

"4K ULTRA HD Blu-ray release from "The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?" Includes two versions: the "1984 Theatrical Release Format" and the "2016 Complete Edition." Comes in a box with a newly drawn illustration. Comes with a 24-page booklet with interview(s)."

If this is accurate, then this is a must buy for any Macross fan. If I'm not mistaken, this would be the first time that DYRL will have proper official english subtitles on blu ray.

  3. Don't have any of the Bandai DX VF-1 series. I've kept myself from buying one due to the difference in scale. I'd like to keep my Valk collection at 1/60. If Arcadia does release a PF Super Ostrich, it would be in my to-buy list for sure, as long as its priced reasonably. And by that I mean it should not exceed the price of Bandai's DX VT-1. And it should definitely be much lower than the current market prices for the Yamato version. I can do without the tent. And nuclear fish over fire. Hehe!

Arcadia should still have the mold for the VT-1 correct? Which means the only issue is production cost and marketability.  The Bandai DX VT-1 is currently sold out in Mandarake. So I guess there is still interest among the collectors? Maybe Arcadia should take advantage of the fact that DYRL is coming out again on 4k blu-ray (with proper english subtitles) and ride on the wave of nostalgia that is sure to be generated. Just my two cents.

  4. Was going to pass on this. Until I saw an unopened one selling for retail in Mandarake. Couldn't resist Ozma's charm and snagged it while I could. They sell out fast apparently.

I had to leave my Valk collection back in the Philippines when I moved to New Zealand for work.  So having an Armored Ozma to play and display here should keep me from missing my collection too much. 🙂

  5. How about the Super Ostrich? Does Arcadia have any plans to re-issue that? They've done the Elintseeker after all. I need a 1/60 Super Ostrich in my DYRL collection. The secondary market prices for the Yamato  version is just too much for me...

I thought the point of this release is so that the bare plastic is covered with paint, therefore negating the plastic yellowing. At least that's what I like about the YF-29 Alto reissue, and (I think?) what they did with the DX VF-1 releases. But now looking at the WWM VF-25 release, it seems like it's bare plastic with matte coat. Hopefully it is a UV cut matte coat? A Ozma reissue wouldn't have the same issue since the base color is gray, and it's the glossiness that bothers me most.

I'm afraid even gray plastic is not immune to yellowing. I have Ozma's renewal, and some parts have also yellowed....

    I don't think you're a completionist. You forgot Arad's Supers. :spiteful:

I can live without Arad's supers, since he has the armored parts. I just don't like the idea that only Chuck's valk is naked in the Delta Platoon. 🙂

What about a new 171 (that was shown in the series), 262 Ba, Arad’s 31a, etc.. Did you also forget those @brouken:nea:

Ah, now we're going beyond being completionist into serious OC territory, haha! Of the ones you mentioned, the 262 Ba would be the most sensible for me to get. Arad's 31a would be the most attractive though. But then you would need their respective super packs...which would bring me back to square one. So, just Chuck's supers for me please, thank you! 😄

  8. While I'm a fan of the matte finish, I'm having a hard time justifying getting this considering I have all the Frontier Skull Squadron renewals and their respective super/tornado/armored packs (which MW member wouldn't? Hehe!) Considering also that my Alto has yellowed significantly, I'm afraid to invest in another one which will most likely yellow away too in several years' time. Unless Bandai used a different kind of plastic for this one...
