  1. As an Old Macross Fan who found the non-Walkure aspects of Delta pretty forgettable, this second movie is fantastic. the robot fights are fun and well animated, but the plot and character development really shine. plenty of fanservice for all the fellow Old Guys here that finally set Delta more firmly in the rest of the franchise both in personnel and thematically. i would have loved to see what they could have done with the events of the movie over multiple episodes instead of the last ~13 episodes of Delta TV series we got instead. i know a lot of folks here look down on anything that came out after the Reagan Administration, but man this was a pleasant surprise.

Prices keep going higher for Macross original art..however, this cel is listed as a "buy it now" rather than letting the market figure out it's value.

Personally, I think it's worth at most half of the current listing price if not less.  I believe this one has been re-listed multiple times, so that also speaks as to what other potential buyers think it's worth...

Of course, as with anything of this nature...if a certain piece personally  interests you or has some sort of significance that cannot be easily quantified...then only you can place a price on it

Thanks for the input! The USD exchange rate is at a 5+ year low, which is a big reason I'm considering a multiple-listed item. I don't think the seller would give me a ~20% discount any other way haha

So the criminals are buying these high priced items and then selling it to themselves?  Otherwise, why would anyone buy "privately" when they could just bid on the items for themselves....the ones who actually want these items and have the cash to spend on them...unless they are re-buying them at much lower prices, as sort of a "fee" for helping with the money laundering schemes....

the article I linked has a short description of how it using money laundering through auctions work. they aren't selling items to themselves (that's a "wash trade" and is more common among NFTs and other sham assets), but selling it to others anonymously.

    LOL

i had the same reaction until a friend who worked for a pretty sizable auction house told me a "super-majority" of bidders on all art or collectibles auctions never took actual physical possession of the items anymore, and instead were sending them through freeports for money laundering purposes - even on "just" four and five digit auctions!

Yes, i followed it live with other french collectors, price are now far beyond we can pay as midle class employees, the end of the collection game for us... Cels are now pieces of art, so they enter the international market of millionaires...

high-dollar art auctions have long been a favored tool for money laundering. my guess is that it's finally trickled down into smaller dollar amounts, and i doubt Russian financial sanctions have helped.

  6. I bought the complete ADV/Harmony Gold DVD release of SDF Macross with the volume 1 box in 2008 (oh gosh, was it?), and it's been sitting on a shelf ever since. I've long upgraded to the superior blu-ray version, and doubt i'll ever watch any DVD ever again. I get the impression that these box sets are worth a few hundred bucks, and would be interesting in selling mine to fund a cel worth framing instead. Sadly, none of the ADV boxes are on ebay right now, so I can't get a sense of what mine is worth. Does anyone have any experience here? Thanks!

Yes, the seller was caught behaving badly on the cel thread here on MW, very bizarre behavior.  In short, his accounts were all permanently banned.

As for the cel, you can buy whatever you want, but know that he is also a cel scalper.  That cel, like the rest of his listings, most likely was bought straight from Yahoo Japan Auctions for 1/4 or less the current asking price on eBay.  You can probably go back and read up on his antics in this very thread.  SO buying the cel is basically just fueling his scalping of more cels, unless he gave up on his cel scalping scheme.

oof, thanks for the info! i figured the price was stupid high and was going to make a "reasonable" offer, but thanks for the warning. we'll keep an eye out for similar pieces on YJ. Who is a good US proxy service nowadays?

  8. My gf got curious about my framed Minmay I picked up in 2008 which you can find in my post history, which led to a conversation about cel collection and checking out a few auctions. She loves the art in this current eBay auction and she thinks it would look great with the rest of the art we have on display in our home. It's obviously just background characters, but I'm not saying no to girlfriend approval for more Macross on the walls.

My only concern is separating the cel from the paper backing for framing and display. I know it's theoretically possible, but I've never attempted it and the cel is quite old. How risky would it be to try to separate as a first-timer? Would it even be worthwhile to separate the cel from the backing? Also, do we know if the seller is a member here?
