  1. Hate to be the party pooper but I can't be the only one to notice the SEVERE lack of macross missile massacre on this show, while Satellights CG work keeps getting better (not just the models, look at the water effects on the crash landing after the block) the fight choreography is still mediocre compared to Frontier, which was my worry after learning that Itano's protege was out of the production. I held off on pointing that out after what was in my opinion the weakest ace vs ace showdown of the franchise a couple of episodes ago, but after watching this episode there's no redeeming the lack of originality of the dogfight choreography, it's all chase, shoot gun, close up, zoom out, repeat. There's no circus! .The production value of this episode is through the roof, yet all the missiles are MIA 13 episodes in, it's driving me nuts.

  2. That's one of the biggest things I noticed---the 2D and CG do NOT mesh well, not nearly as well as Frontier did it.

That's probably because the episode is not done 100% yet, some stuff looks great, and some stuff doesn't, IMO it's not that it looks worse, it's just that some of the inconsistency makes it distracting. The CG quality is actually better for the shots that you can tell are completed, the little cargo loader sequence looked gorgeous, and you can clearly appreciate not only the better renders, but the improved lighting, if you go back see the lighting on MacF, it looks flat in comparison.

I don't really understand why people are saying the animation is worse than Frontier... Comparing the animation in the first episode of Frontier with this and I clearly see a vast, vast improvement here. Especially character animation in Frontier, if you look at the frames themselves, the line thicknesses hardly vary at all, whereas in Delta they do, which makes a world of difference. Many of the character shots in Frontier were drawn rather roughly, in my opinion, whereas they seem to take more care to draw them in Delta. The way that Frejya moves is also notably well done.

The 2D animation is a clear, clear improvement, I'm also going to say that after watching MacF first EP back to back with Delta, I like the character designs much better in Delta.

Looks to me like it extends, you can see it moving outwards in the final scene.

The CG action was definitely impressive for 2008. The 2D animation, on the other hand... Well, Kyoto Animation had raised the bar so impossibly high with Haruhi, that there was no way Macross Frontier could compete.

The CG for 2008 was very impressive and also why the expectations for Delta are very high, I'll expend on this next.

The Valk animation was far better in Frontier.

However, as has been mentioned, maybe this will be improved a bit by the time the actual series is released

Yes for the sequence prior to the Aerial Knights showing up, it gets much, much better after that, I hated the presentation shot of the Walkure Valks, everything prior to the Aerial Knights fight sequence looked stiff IMO. Hopefully they'll improve this throughout the series, it's been my main concern since noticing the choreographer from Frontier is not working on this.

I looked at the CG from both first episodes of MacF and Delta, and from what I've seen it seems that instead of going cutting edge for Delta in the way Satelight did for Frontier, the production team has decided to go for volume instead -something they struggled with during MacF. The use of CG on the first episode of Delta is much more extensive than anything in the first EP of MacF, and while the CG for MacF looked gorgeous where it was used, it was minimal in comparison, so there's the trade off. This is actually good thing IMO since it could mean we might get more action per episode than we did in MacF.

As far as the show, I did not like the whole sailor moon thing, it was just too much for my taste, but the worst part IMO is the fact that the music is far inferior to anything that came out of the first EP of MacF if you give me something catchy it'll be easier to get thru the whole sailor moon thing but it wasn't the case IMO, Kanno's work on F is a lot better than anything heard on Delta, not just the songs, but the themes as well. The only track I felt was close to be on the same level as MacF music was the last song used on the episode, and again over the credits. I liked the characters much better in Delta than in MacF though, at least so far. I think Delta has a lot of potential, while not pushing the cutting edge as they did with F, it seems that they are going to be very ambitious when it comes to their set pieces as shown on the third act of the episode.

  3. Since I don't think this has been discussed yet, I'll bring it up.

The production staff on key roles lacks experience compared to people that worked on Frontier, the one that worries me the most is the CG Director position. This is an excerpt from a Ichiro Itano interview around the time Frontier was being produced:

"Whenever we interview Satelight’s Hiroshi Yagishita-san [*7], he always mentions your name.

Itano: Yeah, because he is a pupil of the Itano School. Man, I beat the hell outta that guy (laughs). The quiet, hard-working guy may be pulled up from above to eventually fulfill his potential, but once he reaches a high level he cannot talk back to a director or enshutsu. That’s why I showed Blassreiter to Yagishita-kun, to which he responded that he would work as hard as he could on episode 7 of Macross Frontier. I even gave him a handicap and told him, “Oh, and we’re gonna have robots and fighter jets from episode 12 onwards, just so you know!”

 So you were competing, and thus mutually spurring each other on.

Itano: Yagishita has been saying he wants to come over and hang out, but he’s been told not to until Macross F is wrapped up. Now they’re working on the Macross F movie, so he’s actually my enemy. So I’ve warned him not to come spy on us (laughs). I think it’s good to just compete with each other to make good shows and have sparring bouts, and as a result, animation as a whole should grow, right?"

Back when Frontier was announced some of us wondered/hoped for Itano's involvement, but of course didn't happen, Frontier still managed to deliver and this guy is the reason why, so in my opinion it is surprising to find out that he is not involved with Delta, instead we have someone with a handful of projects under their belt with the task of delivering one Macross's staples, it's fight choreography. I seriously doubt they would mess up something as important as this, but still, I would have liked someone from the "Itano school" still involved with Macross.

Hironori Morino will be taking over Hiroshi Yagishita's position from Frontier.

If I had to guess, the other two positions seem to have been recruited due to their animation experience in "Expelled from Paradise" -no directing experience, only animation credits, from a brief look at this movie, it does have some rather nice fight choreography in the same style as Macross, very dynamic. Directing experience comes from AKB0048 meh...

  6. The 1:1 VF-25 is interesting, but I find myself quite unexcited by all the other 30th anniversery activities announced so far.

    I mean a stage musical and a Miss Macross contest.....yawn! <_<

I was hoping for an announcement of at least a new OVA.

    Graham

    This.

Maybe they're saving the best for last? I'm still hoping for a new production announcement.

  7. I really hated the first Starship Troopers movie. It didn't even manage to meet the criteria for a good "summer blockbuster action flick". I know Verhoeven is all about the satire, and he can do it pretty well, too, but this just wound up being a hamfisted mess.

Neil Patrick Harris was hilariously campy and awesome, as he always is, but that wasn't enough to save the movie from being otherwise just bad. Even the special effects and costumes were bad.

    Special effects were bad?

  8. Couldn't have phrased my rebuttal any better. No matter what, haters gonna hate...

    OPEN RANKA!

LOL I agree, and like I said before, this sequence/song is one of the highlights of the movie, it's beautifully animated.

I forgot the "surfing Macross" scene, pathetic. It reminded me of a Megazord Power Ranger's attack.

I find it funny people have a problem with a surfing scene, but nobody brings up the giant kabuki-dancing battle fortress-alien queen hybrid cyborg.

  9. Not a surprise given the E7-Kawamori connection, but that does not make it any less of a ridiculous concept and execution. It's one thing to have a small Mech surf the air and another thing entirely to have a giant transforming battle carrier do it (granted it was “falling with style”, not flying); in E7 that concept was built into that universe's “physics” and an integral part of what made that show unique... it was never a part of Macross, in any incarnation, that I can recall. The thing is that I thought the beginning of that sequence was brilliant: the Quarter using that big piece of orbital debris to use as a reentry shield equals awesome and makes sense, but then turning the remaining chunk into a surf board equals slapstick inanity.

Overall, I'd say that both movies were decent in their own right (1st better than 2nd for me), with many cool visuals, battle sequences and musical choreography, but I thought the series was much better.

The whole concept of having a quarter sized Macross class ship was to make it faster and more agile but not as powerful, so in a way it was built into the universe, you never see the full sized ships do something like that, they're heavier, slower and more powerful. In general I would agree with you, I always liked Macross because it's more grounded than other stuff out there, but when it comes to something like this, executed so beautifully I really don't care (you can be critical of the surfing concept not the execution). If there's a medium that can get away with it, it's anime, especially in this case. The scope, concept and choreography of this sequence puts most multi million dollar hollywood productions to shame IMO. As a matter of fact, I liked it so much I'm working on my own edit of it, which I'll post in a few minutes :p
