Just saw this blurbed over at ANN...

    https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2021-04-12/manga-entertainment-rebranding-as-funimation-in-u.k-and-ireland/.171632

So, will this mean that we FINALLY get the awesome Nadelman english-subs and Animaze english-dubs with Walter White on all the episodes for the suspected-to-be-US-released Macross PLUS OVA BD US-edition?

    Or not...

    :touche:

I wouldn't get too excited. Funimation owns Manga Entertainment UK, which split off long ago as a separate company from Manga Entertainment US, which is owned by Lionsgate. What this means is anybody's guess, but someone might have to do some negotiating with Lionsgate to do Macross II and Macross Plus.

  2. The failure of this project is a certainty, unless it gets a lot of mysteriously huge donations in the next week. However, I don't think this failure, even as high profile as it is, will change anything for Harmony Gold. For the last 30 years, they've been sputtering through failed project after failed project, whether it's the Megazone movie mash up, The Sentinels, Crystal Dreams on the N64, 3000, comics, Shadow series, etc. They'll just keep spinning their wheels with Robotech re-releases and try every few years to gin up interest with some new failed project.

  3. i wasn't aware of that. Though that begs the question of why the "Answerman" constantly gives ADV the credit for the restoration (twice!).

Just because Egan works at ANN doesn't mean he has influence over that sort of thing. He's listed as a news editor, whereas Answerman would be classified as a feature. As a reporter I can tell you that there's always a separation between news and editorial/opinion. This means sometimes that facts asserted in an opinion piece can directly contradict facts reported in the news of that same publication. Anyway, just an aside that I hope takes care of that question.

  4. Sorry for the bump, but there's a new episode with a Macross-related topic. The topic I mentioned back in December discussing Robotech, Harmony Gold and North America is covered in our newest episode. Special thanks to the users from MW who provided feedback. We probably won't be talking about Macross on the show for awhile, but the next time we do, I hope to solicit more input from MW members.

  5. With 2009 drawing to a close today, so too does Gundamn's Macross Roundup. In our last episode of the year, we did a double dose covering the 7 sequels and Zero. Top post has been updated with links. We'll be starting off 2010 with a full episode devoted to Legend of the Galactic Heroes. After that, we'll be covering the Macross/Robotech/HG topic mentioned earlier in this thread. Have a happy New Year!

  6. I mean I'd rather not have this thread become entrenched in that debate. If they want to post a talking point or leave comments, they should either PM you or in the Debate thread as opposed to in this thread since we don't want this thread to become a part-2 of the debate thread.

You may want to do a 2-part podcast, one to deal with you and your fellow commentators' talking points, and then a separate show for potential user comments. Just an idea.

In that case, I'll go this route: people should PM me responses to the question. I'll edit the previous post.

  7. Speaking as a podcaster who has already covered all the Macross shows/movies: Don't do this. You will not want to deal with the crazies this will attract.

I don't doubt that you've encountered crazies, and I know I run the risk of that with a controversial topic like this. But that's kind of the point - to discuss something people are uncomfortable with. I know it's a fine line to walk, but most of the people on MW are reasonable folk, so I don't expect the same kind of answers here versus if I were asking somewhere like 4chan, or Robotech.com.

  8. *tap tap tap* You may want to ask this in the HG/RT debate thread. I'd rather not bring discussion of this beyond that thread.

I asked it here because I didn't think it was proper to invade another thread to ask about things relating to my podcast when there was already this thread here.

  9. Here's an update on Macross-related goings on at Gundamn! This Sunday we will be recording the final episode of 2009. To end the year with a bang, we'll be doing a double roundup to cover both the 7 OVAs and Zero. The main reason I'm posting though is because I want feedback from MW users for a future topic that will be covered probably in late January. The Macross topic is part of a broader discussion on things American mecha fans will have to accept whether they like it or not. The Macross topic will be along the lines of this: "HG will always maintain an iron grip on Robotech, and no one else is going to ever release any other Macross."

Overly pessimistic? Perhaps. What I would like to see is some detailed thoughts both for and against this proposition. The people who come up with the best arguments on both sides will have their names and comments mentioned in the show. I hoping to see some good comments, but please leave out any HG flamebaiting or hate. Let's keep things reasonable.

EDIT: Please do not post your responses to this question in this thread. Send them to me in a PM. If you have any general comments on Gundamn, that's fine to post here.

  10. Hey Chris, how can we subscribe and receive email notifications whenever a new episode is up?

You can subscribe on iTunes if you use that, or subscribe to the RSS feed on Gundamn.net. You won't get email notices, but you can check the live bookmark in your browser. Unrelated - the first post has been updated to include the most recently released episode, covering Macross 7.

  11. I know some people here listen to Gundamn! @ MAHQ and have probably heard the extensive coverage we gave to Frontier last year. We also had a long-running series where we devoted a segment to each past Gundam production. With that mammoth project out of the way, we've turned our attention to doing the same with Macross. Each production is getting its own segment, minus Frontier (which we already covered). I'll toss out some handy links below.

EDIT: Roundup is done! Links added for 7 sequels and Zero.

Please share any comments you might have.

  12. they might as well delete x-wing, starship enterprise etc while they are at it

And therein lies the problem with science fiction articles on Wikipedia. You have all these deletionists running around always decrying the terror of "fancruft." So there's always someone who wants to delete articles about Gundam, Macross and anything else anime-related. Yet there can be a zillion articles of "fancruft" on Star Wars and Star Trek, but no one ever dares to try to delete them. I wouldn't bother trying to save them, honestly. Someone else will just come along to delete them again because this anti-anime bias at Wikipedia is persistent. And besides, who really needs to get Macross technical information on Wikipedia when we have the Compendium?

  13. Got a link for those wallpapers, I think I would like them..

    Taksraven

The only ones I ever saw were one for 0083 and F91. They're somewhere in my ginormous image folder, but I'm too lazy at the moment to look for them. Maybe I can find them after lunch and post them somewhere.

  14. go on and delete this cause its just my opinion.

I love it when whiny people post this exact comment to try to provoke an admin into doing exactly that and thus prove their stupid point. Seriously, if you can't see the charm of this place and why people come here, no one is forcing you to stay. As others have suggested, you can find all the spam or stupid things you want on 4chan or some other board.

  15. Well, I'm glad to hear it's not 0083. As far as Unicorn goes, I don't think anyone's asserting that it's getting animated, just wishing.

The problem is that some people are in fact asserting that an anime adaptation is coming, and that's where the confusion comes in. Just look at the first post in this thread:

Anyone... Reading some information, very limited right now, on the new Gundam Unicorn 0096. So far it is a novel base anime with the anime series in the works or in the process of being made.

Aside from a model kit promo video, there is nothing anime-related involved with Unicorn.

  16. Last thing I heard that would be a remake of Gundam 0083.

This is a completely false rumor. Bandai has been releasing a bunch of wallpaper of Gundam art with the 30th anniversary logo stamped on it. In the case of 0083, it's new art with "modern" character designs, which fans took to mean a remake. But it's just a picture and nothing more.

Also, since it has come up in this topic (including the OP), any claim that Unicorn is being animated is false. We won't know what the 30th anniversary project is until 00 ends, so any noise about Unicorn is at this point just baseless fan speculation.

  17. I've actually heard the reason why 0080 brought out so many variations was because Bandai insisted on them being designated as entirely new units to sell more kits, originally the design staff had just planned on them being retcons of existing designs. Not sure how true it is, but it makes a fair amount of sense.

Ultimately I don't think any of the spin-offs manage to get away without messing up the continuity in some way, but I think that has a lot to do with trying to make an "epic" story (the colony drop in 0083) or other outside pressures of development. MS Igloo manages to do a fairly good job of it though, but the flipside of that is that the stories are largely inconsequential. Which is actually a good thing, for the most part.

You're mostly correct. The new designs aren't 0080's fault because originally they were just modern renditions of old suits. However, Bandai went back and retconned them all into being variations. It's been this way for about 20 years now, but it's not how it was originally intended to be. This is evident in mechanical designer Yutaka Izubuchi's book from the same era that illustrates "photos" from different fronts of the One Year War. When you see what is supposed to be the regular Zaku II, it's his design from 0080, which Bandai later retconned to the Zaku II Kai.

  18. Was planning to go for Victory but even Tomino recommends not to watch it. That is kind of a warning.

If there's any one statement I can't stand on the internet about Gundam, it's this. This one thing has been blown so out of context by so many people (mainly, people looking for a reason to bash the show). Where does Tomino make this infamous statement? In the V Gundam DVD box set. Thus, if he's trying to warn you not to watch the series, it's kind of too late for that once you've bought the box set. He's a strange character, and not a single person on the internet has thought of the possibility that the might just be a smart ass with this quote. There's no reason for you not to to watch Victory Gundam. Watch it for yourself, and forget about Tomino's statement (which is probably out of context for us). If you don't like it after watching it, at least you verified it for yourself, instead of just going by that one statement.

  19. Since you are not interested in the complaints of the "raging fanbase", I wonder how I should rank your perceptions of said fanbases complaints in that era. I was quite active in BtVS fandom back then, and remember the flamewars well.

I recall there being complaints about season 6 when it was airing. There will always be complaints about any show. But you make it sound like there was a universal rejection of the show by "the fans" which is simply not true and something I don't believe.

To bring this back on topic with a Macross example, I think people on forums have a problem of scale when it comes to the reception of a show. Just because you visit a couple of forums where a lot of people are having flame wars about a show, it doesn't translate to a massive repudiation of that show in ratings/sales across the country or the world. With Macross Frontier as an example, you had 4chan's /m/ forum raging about the show constantly since the beginning. To hear it from some of those people, Frontier is the worst piece of garbage ever put to film and not worthy of any merit. I've seen the same kind of complaints from very biased pro-Robotech people. But the arguments of these two segments of fans hardly translates to a widescale rejection of the series.

  20. Yeah, the "amorphous blob" called fans also is necessary to maintain a show. But to be more serious, if you piss off one section of your fandom, fine. If you piss off several factions of your fandom, that´s trouble. If you manage to piss off *all* sections of your fandom ( like Whedon pretty much managed with season 6 + 7 of BtVS, if the boards at the time we any indication ), that´s career suicide. Did you notice that Whedon has pretty much dropped off the TV radar lately?

Again, I'm not sure what your point is supposed to be in regards to Buffy. I watched the show since it started in 1997, and I don't recall any massive outpourings of fan rage over those two seasons, and even then, I'm not interested in what the raging complaints of the fanbase are. And given that Whedon developed a huge following with Firefly/Serenity and Dollhouse starts next month on Fox, to say he's committed "career suicide" or "dropped off the TV radar" is completely off base.

  21. As for Kawamori not being influenced by the fans opinion ( that they want a concluded romance ), this, again, pointedly reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where Joss Whedon around mid of season six said the writers were giving the fans what they needed, not what they wanted. Yeah, well... the fans hated the second half of season six and the complete season seven. So sometimes the fans are right, it turns out.

I don't want to get off topic, but I didn't see anything wrong with the second half of season 6 or any of season 7 of Buffy, so I'm not sure what your point is supposed to be. Just because the amorphous blob known as "the fans" didn't like it, that makes it bad? If "the fans" decree something, that makes it right or wrong, good or bad?

  22. I made the Star Wars comparison because Lucas started a trend of going back and messing with films that were perfectly fine and adding unnecessary stuff to them just for the sake of change. That's exactly what GiTS 2.0 is... a bunch of unnecessary changes to an already great film. It's a waste of money and an insult to fans.

Unlike George Lucas and Star Wars though, this doesn't replace the original version, and no one is forcing you to buy/watch it anyway, so what does it matter?
