1. I don't know what would make an F-14 look goofy if it had one seat in it, but is it because of the shape of the canopy or where the seat would be positioned that would make it look odd? Because when I look at an F-14 from the side, it would look rather goofy, but I think that the canopy of the F-14 would be redesigned to look normal having one seat in it IMHO. Also, I heard that after several variants, the long-range concept ultimately evolved, providing Phoenix the capability to initially guide itself using the semi-active radar mode and the Tomcat’s AWG-9 weapon control system, and when close enough to its target, assume guidance control using the active radar system. In addition to this, I know that the Pheonix missle was designed for destroying airborne targets at long distances, but is it possible to "blind fire" a Pheonix to hit a ground target or what?

One of the prototype Tomcats was configured as a single-seater (it was their engine test frame I think). And before you ask, no it didn't look any different. They simply removed the seat and most of the stuff from the rear tub area.

And unless I'm mistaken, radar missiles generally won't fire unless they're locked on to something (I could be wrong about this, can't remember). Plenty of sidewinders have been "boresighted" in vietnam against ground targets, but if a sparrow hit anything on the ground, it's because the Phantom was too low to the ground when it launched it (sparrow is a "drop-fire" weapon) and it hit something on the ground before reaching the mig racing at tree-top level.

The Phoenix missile is the same way (it drops away from the aircraft before the rocket motor fires). Because of this, even if you could fire the missile without first aquiring a "tone", it would be difficult to boresight it simply because there's no telling for sure what the missile will do once it leaves the LAU-92.

  2. Also, to anyone who has played the game already: is Bartlett in Zero or not?

Yes, but not overtly. Hrtbreak 1 is one of the Allied aircraft in one of the missions. The carrier Kestrel is also in one of the earlier missions.

Because its been a sony brand for so long? Thats like asking why gran turismo didn't show up on gamecube or xbox

Not exactly. Sony owns Poliphony Digital, hence GT games only on Sony consoles. Ace Combat is a Namco franchise. And Ridge Racer, another Namco franchise that launched with the PSX, recently made the jump to 360...

In any case, who picked it up yet? I freaking love the game. It's like a subtle blending of 4 and 5.

Like 5 - Controls, including wingman controls, the fact that you have wingman with names and what not, the setting, missions where you shoot things around castles.

Like 4 - Computer briefing instead of fat guy, return line on some missions, Excalibur (think Stonehedge), return of the buying of special weapons, slightly less story than 5.

My one gripe? While replaying the game to earn all the planes and medals will add length, there are only 18 missions. While that puts it at Ace Combat 4 length, five kinda spoiled me. On the other hand, while there were some truly awesome missions in 5, there were some crappy ones as well (both of the ones were you had to fly in between radar balls, the one where you had to hit the targets in sync with the wingmen, etc), and so far, I've enjoyed all the missions in Zero.

I also like how this one gives you a little bit more in the way of choices. Like, in 4, you started with the F-4 and you liked it. In 5, you were flying the F-5 for awhile before you had the option to fly anything else. In Zero, you had three from the get-go, and I rather enjoyed flying the Draken for awhile.

Of course, I unlocked the Su-37 WAY to quickly, and ever since the other planes just haven't been worth it.

You get to unlock the 37 really early, but it's ages before you can afford the damn thing, so it kinda evens out I think! :)

  3. I'm with David. It might've been able to fly, but it would sure as hell need all the lift it could generate minus the outboard wing panels... hence the variable incidence wing-body would be in the raised position. (they just said it could fly.. they didn't specify how good. I'm wagering a pilot wouldn't want to go into combat like that.)

  4. It's also used that way on the vast majority of the websites that deal with Macross II, because of the prevalence of the Macross II RPG, which used the "Marduk" spelling.

*flinch* I figured you'd be above a fallacy like this one...

Nothing in the MacII RPG books should be accepted in any way as canon. Kevin Siembieda took a great number of liberties (lncluding a couple of mecha names) with the material he was given (a half-translated copy of the "This is Animation Special" book). Same goes for any kind of stats. They were mutilated to better fit in with his bastardized RPG system, he pretty much re-molded MacII to be compatible with his little world.

  5. The GFF GM Sniper makes me very happy.

    392865

Yeah, I wonder what's in this combo,, will it be the Orange GM or a Rx-79G gundam. I'm betting on the normal Orange GM this time since if its was a Gundam it would most likely would have been label that instead of GM sniper. I hope they comes with HoverTanK and both huge backpacks of thiers.

    392972

Well since all the GM sniper is is a Ground-type GM with a friggin huge laser rifle, I imagine that's what it will be... all they'd have to do is repaint the figure in the desert cammo, give it a shield and an autocannon (or beam-rifle) and they'd be good to go...

(unless they REALLY go out of their way and give you the Ez-8... which would hella rock)

  6. I'm not quite ready to shoot this one down yet. There's not enough info. I like most of the original movies (even most of the TNG movies were decent)... I believe one gets better mileage out of star-trek storylines if they're limited to 2-3 hours instead of an entire season (sounds bass-ackwards, I know, but TNG is the only ST tv series I've been able to stomach)

Others will disagree, I'm sure. I plan on watching this one develop.

  7. Boeing-Wichita has just announced a serious layoff here too. They've already sold half of their facilities to Spirit Aerosystems, all that remains is the military mod center. Pretty much all they work on here right now are the laser test 747s, Air Force One, and KC-135s (I did see a new italian 737 tanker variant in the hangar a while back though). This used to be a big site for working on B-52s, but that's evidently done somewhere else right now.

I don't think they intend to close the facility, it's pretty cheap to operate (they're only paying half the usual upkeep for the runway, the other half shared by McConnell AFB) but it's definately being downsized.

  8. meh, it's 1/144 scale, I can forgive that in such a small scale :), in fact I rather expect proportional problems. For example, the bases of the two tailfins are WAY too big in that scale.

I will say that the Vegabond stripe is WAY too far forward on the nose (the top should sit under the front of the canopy, not way up in front of the windscreen itself)

It appears to pretty much be a diecast replica of the Dragon 1/144 kit.

  9. Been meaning to post this for some time.

I recently bought a CafeReo Military Aircraft Series 1 JWings 1/144 F-14A. Here are some pics:

    F14Apic1.jpg

    F14Apic2.jpg

    F14Apic3.jpg

    F14Apic4.jpg

Just curious, how accurate to an F-14A is this?

    391749

Except for carrying the LANTIRN pod, it's pretty accurate for an early/mid F-14A. VF-84 never carried the LANTIRN pod, as it didn't really go into service until VF-103 became the Jolly Rogers. Otherwise, looks pretty accurate.

  10. Hey guys, do you think the F/A-18E/F would be a good F-2A/B replacement?

    390890

Moot point. The Japanese put mega bank into their F-2s, they're gonna be using them for a long while now so they can best get their money's worth. The first ones only just went into service in 2000, expect a good 20 years of service or more out of them (by which point something much better than the SH is likely to be available). Purely from a performance standpoint, the F-2 will walk all over the Super Hornet with or without a weapons load. From a radar standpoint, the Super Hornet pretty much out-performs the Viper Zero (although the Viper Zero's radar is adequate for the role it does).

  11. Retroborg, trust me... none of this trivia/information/pictures is anything new. Pretty much everyone here (for better or worse) has seen MacII and knows pretty much everything there is to know about it. Glad you're enjoying yourself though.

Designs and music were passable. The story blows dead goats. It's a sad, sick, pathetic copy of the original DYRL story. Same bullsh!t, different people, different day. It was fine enough in the original DYRL, but "Lovers Again" falls WAY short. Throw another mysterious alien into a love triangle, add a very trans-sexual hair dresser, a female valkyrie pilot with hair WAY out of regs, and an entire society too stupid to even consider the significance of the UNS Macross. Most diehard Macross fans spend the entire series pulling their hair out wondering why the UN and the people in general can't seem to grasp the writing on the wall. There would've been important lessons learned after Space War I that would not have allowed for as many fu(k-ups as these guys had. "Lazy and complacent" my ass. The plot for just about every character is way underdeveloped (you had to work twice as hard at that when you're working with a 6-part OVA), with the possible exception of Ishtar. The subbed version was definately the better of the two to watch, as the dubbed voices are easilly some of the poorest matches in dubbed anime history (this coming from someone who is an advocate of dubs)

I, for one, am glad Kawamori had nothing to do with this series. It might've been good enough in it's own right, but it's hardly worthy of the "Macross" name. (and before you go on about me being close-minded, I should inform you that I consider myself otherwise, and it becomes evident when one learns what anime I watch besides Macross)
