http://tatsuhobby.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=page&id=28
Tatsu Hobby Anniversary Event #3 Northern CA Gunpla Competition!
Our last event for this anniversary is the Northern California Gunpla Competition!
We made this event mainly to express our gratitude towards our local customers and to show the builds of Gundam fans of the Northern California area.
In addition, we made this event in conjunction to the Southern California Gundam Model Competition that will be held on November 12, 2011 as the winner of the contest WILL be traveling with us to the SCGMC event to show that we at Northern California can build proper Gundam model too!
This event will start on July 18, 2011 and will close on August 31, 2011
To join this event, simply send us the pictures of your best model kit build to our email tatsuhobby@gmail.com
A couple of rules to observe when you're sending your entries:
- Please send us a new work of yours that has not joined any competition before to maintain the "freshness" of this competition. If any entry is found to violate this rule, the entry will be immediately disqualified.
- Open only to Northern California customers with Northern California address as defined by this Wikipedia county chart.
- Please limit the size of the picture to 1 Megabyte (1Mb) each to conserve our email space. There is no limit on number of pictures you can send us though
- Any model kits & garage kits, as long as they're from the Gundam series are welcome. Modded kits are welcome as well!
Your model kit will be judged based on the Gunpla Builders' World Cup judgement criteria as following:
Painting (0-100 points): Quality and execution of the painting, including detail, of the entry.
Technical (0-100 points): Includes build, finish and excellence of any modifications.
Creativity (0-100 points): Aesthetics of the entry, including concept, posing, unique painting scheme and presentation, including diorama.
As you can see, it will not be judged by the quality of pictures you've taken, so photo editing will not count in this contest.
Winners will be announced on our facebook page and will be contacted through email as well.
On the judges table, we will be joined with Mr Gamerabaenre, the owner of http://gamerabaenre.com/, a great Gundam modeler whom we're sure you're already familiar with to ensure the judging quality.
As for the prizes of this competition:
- Grand Prize: MG Char's Zaku 2.0 Clear ver San Diego Comic Con exclusive + paid trip and hotel stay for you and your model kit at Holiday Inn Fullerton, CA on November 12, 2011 to attend the Southern California Gundam Model Competition 2011

There's always the option of coming down here for a day trip? Ok, 2 day trip I guess. Again, we're hoping that this is successful, tons of models and such especially in our niche subject of model building. Sci-fi is already niche enough. But if a show like wonderfest in KY does what it does for garage kits and figure modeling; there's hope for this show to do the same with gunpla and other anime mecha models.

1st annual Southern California Gundam Model Competition presented by http://thosegundamguys.org is set for Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the Fullerton Holiday Inn. Full details are here: http://thosegundamguys.org/southern-california-gundam-model-competition/
We have open categories for all things mecha and anime related. So there will definitely be some Macross Representation. I was chatting with an old friend of mine from HS over at Frank & Sons and he told me that I should post this information here. So save the date, and if you guys know fellow modelers that are interested in the event, please help spread the word.

That second link didn't seem to lead anywhere but that first one was very helpful. I never really understood the other panel lining method before so it was nice to see a video of it. Only question I have is he mentions several times that wash method works better after you have clear coated it... I have heard this said many times but what exactly does it mean and how is that one done? (I figure I'll get better answers from the people here than google...)
Hi, this may better answer your question: http://www.gamerabaenre.com/panel_line_wash.htm And there is a larger scaled version of the video from the front page. Hope this is helpful.

I held a workshop that focused on building mecha and resin figure kits. It was held on 3 of the 4 days of the con. There was also a model contest, a little lacking in the mecha department. I didn't get to spend too much time in the exhibit hall, too busy running around between the damn art show and the workshop rooms. Only got to take pictures of folks while I was between places, so sorry for the lack of hotties.
Next year AX will be at LACC.

I had fun. Here are my pictures and little con review: http://gamerabaenre.com/ax_2007.htm

I'm trying to help promote the model contest this year to get more participation, so if you're local or hell, if you're going to AX and you build models, bring something and enter:
http://www.anime-expo.org/?q=professional/...t/model_contest
Additionally, I hosted a Gunpla/Resin Figure building workshop/panel/seminar thingy last year at AX and I will be doing this again this year. The schedules have not come out yet, but I have gotten confirmation that my presentation is on the schedule. I'll update this thread when I get more information.

I thought was pretty cool. The same guy built the Tachikoma reading the magazine. Granted, it's no Jesus statue built entirely out of chocolate, but pretty impressive stuff regardless

Ok, decided to post this here for a few reasons. I met someone from MW over there this past weekend, Nick. There where two Macross kits in the contest. And I have a picture of the vice con chair from the event dressed as Max Sterling next to Mari.

Enjoy!

Well the format of the workshop is mostly lecture style. You are more than welcome to bring your own kits. I was notified a little too late about the approval of the workshop as well as the time and number of workshops they gave me. I was expecting a 1 hour, 1 day workshop/panel. They gave me 3, two hour workshops to have fun with. But definatly bring a model with you so you can follow along on your kit while I do demos. I'll try to bring some more supplies such as glues, sand paper, etc.
I only airbrush, so I don't plan on doing a live demo of the painting process. I have created a couple of video clips that I had added to my presentation that will demo that part of the build.
The idea I have is to have some handout with areas for taking notes and folks can take what they learned and try it out at home and such. I will have other teachers with me so you will get some personal attention if you have some specific questions during the workshop.

Heh.. I remember going to an AX in 1994; the summer after I graduate from high school... you have a LONG time before you can claim the "I'm getting old" thing
Your avatar, is that your corgi?
I have a few of those... http://gamerabaenre.com/hugo/index.htm

The the future dry and cure for at the very least 48 hours before you even think about applying a wash. If you are applying a wash over future, then I do not recommend you use any acrylic based paint for your wash solution. Use an oil based paint such as an enamel paint. Typical thinning ratio for a wash is about 90-95% thinner to 5-10 % paint. Apply the wash with a fine tip paint brush, 0, 00, 000 sizes are perfect. Just dip the brush into the wash solution and lightly dip it into one of the panel lines. If you sprayed your future correctly, and allowed for it to cure enough, the wash solution will flow down the line very easily. Cleanup is easy, take a paper towel dip it into some enamel thinner then lightly wipe areas where you do not want paint.

Hi all,
I'm new here, but I've been building models for a while and I'll be going to AX as well. This year will be a little different in that I going to be doing a "model building" workshop. Here's the original post on the AX forums: http://forums.anime-expo.org/index.php?showtopic=2364
So anyone interested check out the schedule:
http://www.anime-expo.org/downloads/progra...amming_v1_1.pdf
So I'm set for the following times and days:
7-9 PM Saturday
6-8 PM Sunday
4:30-6:30 Monday
I'm planning on doing the same workshop three times. For those who can only go to one workshop, those only there for one day, etc.... If you're going to the Con, drop on by and say hi! Or if you want to learn some of the techniques I use, come on by and take a seat!

I didn't use any putty. I just used Tamiya Extra Thin model cement, pressed the two parts together, and the cement dissolves the plastic and forms a little bond with excess melted plastic oozing into the middle of the seam. Sand this seam down and you have a whole piece without the use of putty. I did however use Mr Surfacer 500, and just hand brushed the stuff into some of the fun little mold divots, holes, and uneven surfaces that are found all over the kit.
