  1. I agree with JohnMc.

While re-imagining and remixing the series is fun, without a masterful overarching vision, the basis and underpinnings of the series begin to fall apart. J. Switzer has recently observed by making Minmei and Lisa so assertive in their Titan incarnations, the contrast between the two is lost. This muddles and diminishes Rick's romantic tension between these two love interests. Originally, Minmei and Lisa were illuminated against the backdrop of the other.

In 1982 the plot tension was generated by the dynamics between these character archetypes. As JohnMc observes, this contrast is now lost between Rick and Max. It is doubtful the Titan creative team foresaw these repercussions. Minmei and Max were the alpha female and alpha male of the original series. Max was the Anti-Rick and Minmei and was the Anti-Lisa. In Titan their character arcs and opportunities for growth have been squandered.

I would love for Titan to prove me wrong with reinvented plots and alternative plot conflicts, but it seems they will never get the chance to publish their intended material.

I do see some potential for Titan's Max and Miriya in an opposites attract and growing sexual tension plot line. But again, in support of JohnMc, Max seems stubborn and whiny in Issue 4. Miriya seems mentally and emotionally dominant. Also, she is illogically very maternal even though she has not fallen in love nor had children. In Issue 4 Miriya reminds Max they do have children in another space and time which seems to make her more wise and reasonable.

  2. Spoiler Alert for Robotech Remix Issue 4 February 2020

    Spoiler

    1. As Rick 481 chokes Dana he has a flashback which shows Bowie holding a smoking Mospeada gallant H-90 presiding over a lot of dead bodies including Lisa’s. Dana seems to be aware of this event and flashback Dana is confused while remix timeline Dana attempts to explain and deny Rick 481’s mistaken impression. Jack Baker aims a staple gun at Rick 481 which bears some comedic symmetry with the gallant H-90.

    2. Aurora Sterling knows intuitively this is not remix timeline Rick. She states he is “other.”

    3. Dana refers to the pollinator on Aurora’s shoulder as a cha cha which may be the name originated in the Robotech novels.

    4. Arminus Blanc returns to his ship and finds the Zombie Zentreadi wandering around. His superior technology is unable to identify the lifeforms.

    5. Max and Miriya arrive separately at the Baker home. Miriya calls Max a hajoca.

    6. Nova and Aurora greet their dad and seem to have a very close relationship with Miriya.

    7. Aahna and Lisa share a shuttle from the SDF-3 to Earth. Aahna seems interested in news about Rick almost as if she is Minmei or a spy for Minmei. The name Aahna means inner light and immortal one among other definitions. The shuttle is attacked by the Zombie Zentreadi and Lisa suggests Max utilize a “concert defense” using Aahna’s music.

    8. Aahna’s music is in English as well as some type of elvish alphabet like tengwar. The concert defense seems to consist of drones projecting holograms of Aahna.

    9. The Zombie Zentreadi have Invid Plasma canons mounted on their shoulders.

    10. Arminius Blanc uses his modified bioroid mecha to clear the timeline of the Zombie Zentreadi.

    11. Rick is seen meeting Roy, Claudia, and their child on a sailboat.

  3. I also alluded to this topic back on 2/18/2020.

Brian Wood wrote the first 8 issues of the last Robotech Titan series. He has a few accusations floating around google about his possible harassment of women. I believe there were even some quasi-articles written up prior to or just after Titan's Robotech comic book premiering indicating he was taking this Robotech opportunity to almost apologize to his accusers, right his past wrongs, or perhaps market himself to the latest fad of comic book plots.

On another topic, I am sheepishly a fan of both the RT franchise and the Macross franchise and there really is no discussion of the Titan comic anywhere. Unless, I'm missing something this thread is the most active and intelligent discussion of the comic I can find. Is it happening on Facebook? In YouTube comments? Maybe 10,000 comics are sold and how many of those consumers want to converse about it? The absence of activity is a pretty big indictment of the franchise.

  4. Spoiler Alert for a backup story in Robotech Remix Issue 3 January 2020 framed as a MBS TV show titled Pop Star Sleepover.

    Spoiler

    1. Aahna breaks the fourth wall and addresses the reader of this comic stating her Rick Hunter would never choke Dana. She states she is watching this comic series as a television show. In Aahna’s timeline she is hosting an after show or wrap up television show commenting on the Remix comic television show. This somewhat recalls Kawamori’s metafictional explanation of Macross canon as fictional in-universe portrayals of unseen non-fictional in-universe events.

    2. She explains Rick can see through spacetime and open portals to other universes. She explains Minmei died in a senseless accident that changed Rick’s life and unified Humans and Zentreadi. A portrait of Minmei’s funeral is seen showing full size Zentreadi and Rick in attendance.

    3. She suspects this murderous Rick is a third Rick. The first scarred and gray haired Shadow Chronicles Rick from Dana’s timeline sent the SDF-3 back to a Macross Island on which Zor’s fortress never crashed beginning events for the second Rick in this splinter timeline who has gone missing in Remix.

    4. Aahna speculates there may be multiple Ricks. One of them might be exploring Altira, but maybe his name is not Rick. She is not sure of his name because she cannot understand the movie as it never has any subtitles. (In her dialogue she makes a metafictional jump from in-universe Remix speculation to a DYRL? allusion by inconsistently blurring her Rick with Hikaru of DYRL? and blurring the Robotech franchise with the Macross franchise by sneakily swapping fictional settings in an attempt to achieve out-of-universe mockery.) Her television plays the final scene of Episode 36.

    5. The metafiction comments on its own metafiction by destroying the framing device of this being an after show or wrap up show when the cameraman sets down his equipment, sits next to Aahna, and eats popcorn. He upsets Aahna when he states Rick marries Lisa in every universe so Aahna beats him up and destroys the room because she has a romantic crush on Rick.

To summarize, at first glance this comic appears to be a comic book. Next, the panels are portrayed as a TV show as Aahna defines the readers as viewers and comments on the comic’s events as if they are a TV show being broadcast in a universe shared by both her and the readers of this comic. Then the panels are portrayed as comic panels again or the readers’ first person observation of events when the cameraman sets down his equipment acknowledging the out-of-universe readers. Then the panels are reframed as Aahna records from a selfie point of view reframing the panels as a broadcast TV show. The inconsistency is in allowing the readers access to the panels in which the cameraman set down his equipment unless this is a television set within a television set and Aahna’s selfie footage is an in-universe scripted stylistic choice. Without this set within a set the inconsistency would be the out-of-universe comic readers have access to panels not broadcast to unseen in-universe television audience viewers. This is similar to out-of-universe viewers viewing the hand of a nonfictional live-action Misa turning the pages of Hikaru’s photo album in the closing credits for Episodes 1 to 36. Unless, the nonfictional events of the Macross franchise take place in a live-action universe and this live-action hand was an actress portraying Misa for a non-fictional live-action in-universe audience sharing the same timeline and universe as the still unseen nonfictional Misa, the metafiction of Episodes 1 to 36 becomes inconsistent.

  5. Spoiler Alert for Robotech Remix Issue 3 January 2020

    Spoiler

    1. Karen Penn pilots the mecha of the inter-dimensional fugitive to save Jack Baker from the Zombie Zentreadi. Three Zombie Zentreadi chase the mecha but it has a shadow technology cloaking device which evades the Zombie Zentreadi. They land at Jack Baker’s house.

    2. Miriya recognizes Frudah Arminius Blanc but he knocks her unconscious before she names him (likely as Zor?). In an allusion to DYRL? he admires her bloodied and prone body and he utters the word beautiful.

    3. Dana is a captain.

    4. Vince and Jean Grant call from space to speak with Bowie but he is not home. Dana has a flashback to her original timeline in which Bowie references Musica.

    5. Bowie makes a reference to Joe Hisaishi who composed music for MOSPEADA.

    6. In the previous Titan series a character named Persy Satori replaced Ben Dixon after his death. The character cast page of this Remix series lists twins named Nova and Aurora Sterling identified as Max’s children. The mother’s name is blacked out. Aurora is female which is consistent with Robotech canon. However, Nova is a male. It can be suspected Max and Persy have had children and in this splinter timeline Nova is now male. An element of protoculture mysticism is implied as a pollinator is constantly perched on Aurora. However, with two human parents she should have no mystical powers as Miriya is not her mother.

    7. Dana arrives at the Baker’s house looking for Bowie. She finds Rick injured who musters the energy to attempt to choke Dana to death as he yells how Dana “killed them all.”

  6. Your hopes for the demise of Robotech Remix brings two visions to mind.

First is Peanuts' Lucy pulling that football away from Charlie Brown one more time or in this case publishing Issue 5 of Remix.

Second is that old saying about cockroaches being the most successful organism on Earth even after the apocalypse. Robotech is the cockroach of anime?

  7. All great points concerning the logic behind the Zentradi clones. The ethical point makes sense but prior to the Zentradi discovery of Earth, in all their cycles, why wouldn't Boddole Zer or Laplamiz have made squads of their best soldiers? Laplamiz could've made squads of Milia's and even exterminated them after a battle to avoid any personality issues. Is it possible to clone their skills or consiousness for insertion into each clone?

I am only familiar with SDF Macross, and I am ignorant of the Protoculture civilization so excuse my ignorance in the following. If the males and females self-segregated and became the Supervision Army, Meltrandi, and Zentradi, maybe the clones we now know are clones of the original Protoculture civilization. Perhaps their arrogance led to non-identical clones as they were proud of their individual clones. Could this be why the out-of-universe writers never considered identical clones? Is there an internal logic to the clones being non-identical?

You made good points about non-identical clones providing a richer storytelling experience from an out-of-universe perspective. It probably allows for more creative choices in the plots and subplots.

  8. Thanks for the answers. I see a plot hole regarding just making an army of Max's and Milia's and cloning their memories as well and piping over their memories into all the clones so they are all experienced pilots.  Maybe the viewers must assume this was attempted in-universe and it didn't work. Maybe Max and Milia work best alone or in a pair.

It's intriguing the out-of-universe creators utilized non-identical clones. I wonder if they considered identical clones in the early stages of writing or if it even occurred to them they used a diverse population of clones for their plot. Maybe it just came naturally to the writers.

  9. Hi there. Just a quick question. In the original SDF Macross, what kind of clones are the Zentradi? If Milia is the best pilot, could the Zentradi clone several copies of her? Is this a plot hole? Have any micronians ever been cloned in the Macross franchise? Could Max be cloned?

Is it strange the Zentradi are clones but not identical clones?

    Thanks

  10. This is a delicate subject and I wish to be respectful and even neutral in the matter. I just wanted to make an observation.

I possibly detect an intentional organized effort by Harmony Gold to market Robotech to females and minorities. The original 85 episodes contained these qualities inherently with the Lisa and Azonia characters, Roy and Claudia's relationship, Bowie and Musica's relationship, Lancer's lifestyle, and many other examples. These two Titan Comics may be attempting to update the series to further meet current sensibilities of 2020. As evidence Lisa and Minmei were more assertive in the last series.

Brian Wood wrote the first 8 issues of the last Robotech Titan series. He has several accusations of improper behavior so he may have written an updated version of Robotech to demonstrate his egalitarian views. Or maybe Titan hired him either with with or without knowledge of these accusations.

Somewhat related is Harmony Gold CEO Frank Agrama's association with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi who has been proven to exhibit certain interesting behaviors. In 2012 Agrama was found guilty of tax schemes occurring in 1988 which involved Berlusconi.

Just food for thought. These topics are probably too divisive to discuss here. However, this information may better inform the fans understanding of certain creative decisions.

  11. Spoiler Alert for a backup story in Robotech Remix Issue 2 December 2019 framed as a MBS public service announcement.

    Spoiler

    1. The new pop idol Aahna is a glamorous professor giving a lecture.

    2. She explains not only can the SDF-1 fold space for faster travel, it can also travel through time as well as space or distance. However, if you travel to your past you may alter your own future and create a splinter timeline.

    3. A scribbled Orguss mecha is shown in one panel.

  12. Spoiler Alert for Robotech Remix Issue 2 December 2019

    Spoiler

Spoiler Alert for Robotech Remix Issue 2 December 2019

    1. Rick has lost his protoculture powers and x-ray vision.

    2. Rick believes Minmei is alive and is searching for her.

    3. I believe this comic has confused a member of the Hayes family named Nicholas Hayes with Lisa’s father Donald Hayes. wink

    4. The Zor-like character Frudah Arminius Blanc buries his craft to hide it. The name Arminius implies the historical context of a German hostage raised by Rome to later lead Rome to victory in Germany but then betray Rome and lead Germany to victory over Rome. He was later assassinated by Germans.

    5. Sammie has been macronized and is the foreman of a construction site where a micronized Miriya is employed.

    6. Miriya stumbles upon Frudah Arminius Blanc stealing supplies to repair his ship. He wins a fight with her.

    7. Miriya has been in Dana’s custody since the events of the last series and Bowie is in Dana’s care.

    8. Jack Baker and Karen Penn are scavengers and head out to the inter-dimensional crash site of the fugitive Frudah Arminius Blanc was pursuing. (There is some graffiti in a panel referencing the Macross franchise song Zero-G love and a Wolf Pack Robotech reference. There is also an allusion to the Macrossnald’s fast food franchise from the Macross franchise.)

    9. The crash site has a malfunctioning shadow technology field causing the craft to sink into the ground. The ground is a Zentreadi burial site.

    10. Karen and Jack discover the injured fugitive who has identification stating he is Rick Hunter 481 possibly implying he is from the 481st protoverse splinter timeline.

    11. They decide to fly the craft back to New Macross City and bring the fugitive along for first aid.

    12. A giant Zombie Zentreadi hand comes out of a grave.

Note: These two Titan series take place in a splinter timeline of the protoverse. The last series began with the events of the End of the Circle novel and Rick sending the SDF-3 back to a version of the Macross Island in 1999 in which Zor’s ship never crashed. However, somehow the Zentreadi were still in pursuit of Zor’s ship in this timeline but have stumbled across the SDF-3 from the original timeline. The Regis is likewise still seeking revenge however she may be more aware this is a splinter timeline as she seems to be able to access all timelines. Thus, from an out-of-universe perspective, Lisa is in the SDF-6 and Max is in the SDF-3.

Another Note: There is an excellent article in the back of this issue written by Jennifer de Guzman titled Of Foot-races and Veritech Fighters. It contrasts the Greek myth of Atalanta with the Miriya character of Robotech.

  13. Here we go again. :)

    Spoiler

Spoiler Alert for Robotech Remix Issue 1 November 2019

    1. A pop star named Aahna is interviewing Dana on an MTV-like television show.

    2. The scene cuts to Dana's private quarters and Dana has a hologram locket from a married Bowie and Musica of her original timeline. Bowie and Musica play an ancient Trirolian song. In the hologram Bowie explains there are secrets to be discovered inside this alien song.

    3. In the main timeline of Remix Dana is now Bowie's guardian and he is a small child.

    4. Vince Grant is the commander of Vermillion Squadron.

    5. It seems an inter-dimensional fugitive enters this timeline and is pursued by pursuers from its own timeline. The pursuers seem like Zor and Tirolians. The Zor like character is named Frudah Arminius Blanc. He knows Dana.

    6. Lisa is Captain of the SDF-3 in space and Max is the Captain of the SDF-1 on Earth. (However, in the previous Titan issues Rick sent the SDF-3 back to Macross Island with Dana which 1999 inhabitants experienced as the SDF-1. Therefore, in this issue, form an out-of-universe perspective, Max is in the SDF-3 and Lisa is in the SDF-6. ??? What happened to Zor's original battle fortress? It should have crashed with the SDF-3 in 1999.)

    7. Bowie from this timeline stole the melody from Dana's hologram locket performed by him in Dana's original timeline. Bowie gives the melody to Cameron Baker, younger brother of Jack Baker.

    8. A pollinator is shown but the spores were never released on Earth in this timeline.

    9. The inter-dimensional fugitive crashes and his orders are to kill Dana.

    10. Rick Hunter is AWOL.

  14. Thanks. I really appreciate your expertise on all these matters.  Thanks for the AnimEigo recommendation. Interesting to know there are about 3 translations of SDF Macross.

You are a total Macross... (and RT) ...expert. It would be cool if the core group of experts here posted a thread of their backgrounds, their journey to becoming a super fan, real names, social media accounts, and stuff like that.

You are all like superheroes with all your knowledge. Sometimes I wonder who you all are. I kind of piece together the SpeakerPodcast guys and Jonathon Switzer.

    Anyway, thanks again.

  15. Are there any forums here discussing the most accurate Japanese to English subtitle translations of Episodes 1 to 36? Maybe even a sort of canon translation? Are there any episode transcripts in English? How many different subtitle versions are there? I watched SDF Macross using the current Amazon version with the English subtitles. It is by FilmRise.  There seem to be multiple VHS and DVD versions and translations over the years.  There are a lot of archived discussions across the internet which do not apply to this Amazon or FilmRise version. One example is the term "comfort woman" not being present. I have read archived discussions about Episode 15 when Minmay's father accuses her of being a "comfort woman" but in this current Amazon version it is translated as "entertaining the troops." I would be interested in purchasing the version with the most accurate translation or maybe officially endorsed translation. Thanks.

  16. Spoiler Alert for Curtain Call Part 5 of 5 appearing as a backup in Event Horizon Chapter 4 Issue 24 October 2019

    Spoiler

    1. The Minmei hologram ends.

    2. The hologram was a distraction for computer data theft.

    3. A note is left on the hologram projector reading “She’s Alive!”

    4. Rick regretfully decides to inform Lisa he wishes to stay on Earth and find Minmei.

    5. Lancer is shown speeding away from the SDF-1 in Macross City Lake. He was the computer hacker downloading files from the SDF-1.

    6. Dana hopes the unknown hacker can help Rick find Minmei and return her to her own timeline.

  17. Spoiler Alert for Event Horizon Chapter 4 or Issue 24 October 2019

    Spoiler

    1. The comic opens with a flashback to the first investigations of the crashed space fortress on Macross Island. It shows Captain Gloval, Admiral Hayes, and Roy putting a 45 year old Rick into a body bag. They hope to change the imminent future with this knowledge.

    2. Roy is injured and in a medical unit.

    3. Lazlo Zand has gone missing.

    4. Breetai is micronized and is part of a covert operation to penetrate the Regis’ hive. Minmei is also part of this team.

    5. Azonia arrives in Optera space to assist the SDF-1.

    6. Minmei uses pychic powers to stop Invid enemies.

    7. Roy arrives in a super veritech to assist the covert operation.

    8. Khyron also arrives to assist the SDF-1.

    9. Rick and Minmei face the Regis and use their protoculture powers to transport characters from across the Robotech franchise to assist them against the Regis.

    10. Minmei commands the Over-Mind/Invid Brain to provide its information about the Flower of Life and Shadow Technology. She commands the Over-Mind to send its forces to a distant reality.

    11. Minmei disappears along with the Invid.

    12. Roy seemingly saved Rick from his time loop destiny. Miriya was in a prison cell on the SDF-1. Rick, Lisa, Roy, and Claudia get married.

    13. The backup comic titled Curtain Call implies Minmei is dead. However, in a final panel of this comic Dr. Lang, Karl Riber, and Minmei are shown informing all the displaced Robotech franchise characters they have the option of returning to their timeline or joining the REF. Showing Minmei in this panel is most likely an error.

    (14. Merry Christmas!)

  18. Thanks for all the insights. I'm still undecided about all this. I am trying to wrap my head around 1985 television technology and RT being broadcast to China, Russia, France, South America, etc. There were no other real alternatives for distribution or viewing creating a captive audience. This audience would be pretty big but confined to the late 80's and now aged about 30 years older. This audience would have a lot of nostalgia and possibly passion and enthusiasm for RT. However, the active audience of 2019 with disposable income would be much younger, mostly Japanese, and focused on Macross... but today's Macross is just one franchise in an ocean of content compared to 1982. It seems difficult to judge.

  19. I know this is infuriating but does RT have the larger number of worldwide fans and overall viewership since 1985 due to all the licensing issues? Granted the Macross franchise has more media and material, but it seems the majority of the Macross content is confined to Japan? Would it be wiser to make a live action Macross film or RT film based on worldwide audience? The numbers would be interesting for comparison. How many humans worldwide have been exposed to RT versus Macross? Could it be like 500 million to 50 million in favor of RT? Does anyone have any educated guesses on this? Regretfully, I assume RT has the larger audience. Thanks. Just curious about this. I apologize for raising a RT related question.

  20. So to summarize, only SDF Macross, Macross II, and Macross Plus had official US releases which obviously had English subs or dubs.

Macross Frontier "shooting star", Macross Plus special edition, and Macross Delta were not released in the US but were released in Japan with either English subs or dubs. These are compatible with USA DVD players as region 1.

Macross 7 (all of it), Macross Zero, and Macross Frontier (series) have never had official releases with English subs or dubs.

What about DYRL? I own the 2 disc Perfect Edition of DYRL and it has English subs. It has English language on the DVD box. It is made and distributed by Crescent Media.

  21. Hi there. Is there an up to date thread or post here listing the entire Macross franchise by production order? Rearranged by continuity order? Is it still true only Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Macross II: Lovers Again, and Macross Plus have been released with English subs or dubs outside of Japan? I found an excellent post about this from 2003 over at RT dot com. It is titled "DYRL Question." Do the terms of use here forbid discussing fan subs of the media not available outside Japan? Thanks. Enjoy the holidays everyone!

  22. My apologies to those who do not find this worthwhile.

Spoiler Alert for Curtain Call Part 4 of 5 appearing as a backup in Event Horizon Chapter 3 Issue 23 September 2019

    Spoiler

    1. Max is captain of the SDF-1.

    2. Minmei is dead in this timeline. Dana from a future timeline is present in this comic’s current timeline. In the timeline Dana is from, Minmei is alive and about 38 years old. The Minmei from this streaming concert footage is about the age of the deceased Minmei from this comic’s timeline.

    3. Rick searches the SDF-1 and finds the source of the streaming concert footage. It is a hologram of Minmei. She acknowledges Rick’s presence.

  23. I apologize for upsetting anyone with these posts. Only one more issue to go after this. :)

Spoiler Alert for Event Horizon Chapter 3 or Issue 23 September 2019

    Spoiler

    1. The introduction summary at the front of the comic incorrectly states the SDF-1 belonged to the Zentreadi when it really belonged to Zor and the Robotech Masters. This introduction also states the Regess is using shadow technology to steal protoculture from multiple realities. However, it was originally the REF returning from Tirol who used shadow technology to liberate Earth. In this series I do not recall anyone weaponizing shadow technology. However, in the first panel it is explained the RDF developed shadow technology and the Invid stole it.

    2. Miriya appears from hiding to murder Max in the last comic but Dana knocked her out. The Invid have invaded and Miriya joins Dana and Max as allies in the face of the Invid threat.

    3. Dr. Lang had been containing the space time rift left by the missing fold generators using shield harmonics and now adapted it to close the Invid shadow portals. This mysteriously returned the missing fold generators.

    4. Rick and Minmei hold hands to generate a vision. They see cyclones, Praxians, Robotech 3000 soldiers, and E.V.E.

    5. The crew discovers Lazlo Zand’s secret dimension. Claudia finds Roy alive.

    6. Lisa folds the SDF to Optera using the recently materialized fold generators.

    7. Breetai implies he asked Exedore to request Azonia join them at Optera.
