If we allow for errors in the romanization, it could be zorn, which means anger or wrath in German. That would make Panzerzorn a pretty cool name.

Gern means gladly, willingly, surely or with pleasure - it's actually a bit difficult to explain the usage in English, but it's just the same as the Swedish word gärna. I would interpret Zaubergern as something like "magic, please" as a request or someone that is happy to bring magic (but the composition of the word is a bit strange).

That’s what I thought of too, but the original Japanese text for “soln” is ゾルン / zorun, not ツォルン / tsorun. It would be odd if they correctly presented the German pronunciation of “z” in “Panzer” but forgot it in the rest of the compound word.

Still, “Zorn” would make a lot of sense since it’s an actual word.

(Also, very slight pet peeve... there's no "g" sound in his first name.  It's Jan - pronounced "Yon".)

Haha, I see that Sildani is based in North America but perhaps it is worthwhile to specify for the benefit of all members here that you mean “yon” in an American English accent.

(Yack Deculture I hate the stupid Great Vowel Shift.)

I finished watching Civil War last night, and that's the first time seeing it since it was in theaters I think... I couldn't remember how it was that Cap knew of the details of Stark's parents death.  Was that in there somewhere or in a different film?  Was it in the file Nat gave him on Barnes?

It wasn't clearly indicated in the movie how he knew.  This was an oversight on Marvel's part, I think -- though you could argue that for the sake of moving the story forward, it doesn't matter *how* Cap knew about the Starks being killed, just that he knew and didn't tell Tony.

It isn't said outright, but I suspect that file Natasha gave Cap at the end of Winter Soldier had info about the assassination/hit.

Hence, her warning about "You might not want to pull on that thread."

Mog is probably right. Don't forget that earlier in The Winter Soldier, one of the historical news headlines disembodied Zola shows is the death of the Starks, just before Zola highlights the death of Fury. Rogers must have obviously deduced that a S.H.I.E.L.D. leader's suspicious death had to have been HYDRA's handiwork.

Dark of the Moon, the scene where the Autobots are escorting Sentinel Prime on the DC Parkway.  There's actually three of them, and this Crowbar was the first one to transform before grabbing John Turturro's character and smashing into a freeway sign that the other two used as a ramp to launch themselves into the the air before Transforming.

For reference, here is a YouTube clip.

As far as I know, it's a reference to the sanskrit word for the Sun which is also the name of the Hindu sun god.

This may have something to do with one of the partners being "Bharat", which is the Hindi name of the country/region the west calls India.

Oh right, now I remember reading this before. Thanks, Seto Kaiba.

And on a different subject, what is the naming intent behind the (フェイオス・バルキリー) Feios Valkyrie? All Google gives me for "Feios" is some minor village in Norway.

And is that a typo on the MMM page where it says Timothy Daldhanton was a member of Vindirance?

Zeak probably comes from the zero in VF-0, as back in WWII the old A6M Zero was given the nickname Zeke by allied forces.

Until @ManhattanProject972 pointed out the A6M Zero connection, I would've said "I have no idea"... since they romanized it "Zeak" in the Visual Book, it just sort of slipped by.

That would make it the second VF in that story to have a World War II name reference, the other being the VF-22HG Schwalbe Zwei.  That one is a double reference to the Me 262 fighter version (Sturmvogel having been the fighter-bomber configuration) and Messerschmitt's Me 262 V9 Hochgeschwindigkeit (abbreviated HG, lit "high speed") series of test aircraft.

Oh wow, that makes a lot of sense.

Volume 1's cover is Hakuna Aoba's VF-1X++ Valkyrie Double Plus and Chelsea Scarlett's VF-19ACTIVE "Nothung".

Volume 2's cover is their respective "mid-season" upgrades... Chelsea Scarlett's YF-25 Prophecy w/ Paladin Pack (SPS-25P/MF25) and Hakuna Aoba's VF-0改 "Zeak", which is basically a VF-0 rebuilt with YF-25 parts.

What is the meaning of "Zeak"? I have never heard of this name before anywhere.

And that reminds me: if VF-19ACTIVE does not have "改" in its sub-model name, then are we to infer that there is an entire line of Nothung units?

Yes, that is Ogol 7312... self-styled as Naresuan after adopting Earth's culture in the wake of the First Space War.  Fun fact, he took the name of one of Thailand's most revered monarchs, also known as Sanphet II.  He's the leader of Fasces, and a former NUNS Special Forces squadron commander (of SVF-473 Etoile Filane - french for "Shooting Star") who mentored both Hakuna Aoba (right book left dude in the orange jacket) and Angers 672 (the one standing next to him).

Gotcha. What about the two fighters on the Vol. 2 cover? The custom VF-1 and the.....what the heck is the one on the right? Is that the "YF-25 Paladin Prophecy"?

  9. What is the naming intent behind the Fz-109 エルガーゾルン / Erugāzorun (Elgersorn? Elgerzorn?) and the Az-130 パンツァーゾルン / Pantsāzorun (Panzersorn? Panzerzorn?)? Are these some kind of German portmanteau?

Are we to assume that the Megaroad-13 / Varauta colony included many humans of German descent?

  10. What's the real-world naming intent behind the YF-29 Durandal? For a fighter that basically supplanted the VF-25 Messiah as the designated rival to the VF-27 Lucifer, I don't see how "Durandal" is supposed to thematically oppose "Lucifer".

Relatedly, why is YF-29B Perceval rendered in Japanese as パーツィバル / Pātsibaru? Where does that pronunciation come from?
