  1. You do realize that pointing out the obvious in a condescending manner while failing to answer the fundamental question destroys your intellectual credibility, right?

Gubaba and Azrael have done a lot more in clarifying the question. In summary: because it's based (wholesale copied?) on a 1984 Doujinshi that wasn't considered canon and despite having Kawamori-san's approval, it shouldn't be taken as canon at face value.

Wow...and I thought here we're having an intelligent discussion. It seems to me rather than focusing on the topic, you decided to make personal attacks on me just because you failed to understand what I was trying to explain. You do realize by attacking me makes you a bully, right?

Condenscending? If attacking my intelligence makes you feel better then feel free. Don't mince words. If you want to call me an idiot just because I state the obvious, do it like a man. All I can say is that you are the one acting in an elitist manner just because you know Japanese, not me.

It seems to me you don't welcome debates or dissenting opinion in this thread. You seem to have THE final say in regards to the canonical status of the book. Therefore I shall not contribute anything further to this thread.

    Enjoy.

  2. I do.

The reason why I'm asking is that a) it contradicts information contained within itself and b) it contradicts information published concurrently in a different publication.

Therefore, the question isn't "has it been retconned", but "why is it not consistant with other publications published at the same time?"

It's simple actually. A lot of anime made in the 80s don't have too much of an established source bible. Any new or additional info written and published by any number of writers may contradict each other because a) they may not have the same access to the source, b) there was no central authority to tell them what is correct or incorrect, or c) revisions were made based on newly revealed sources by the creator much later. Unlike other established fictional worlds like Lord of the Rings and Dune, Macross suffers from lack of a detailed background. What we know of the universe created by SK and gang are from later publications and I see the case of the contradicting info as a lack of foresight when authorizing the books.

But again, you already know all this.

  3. In fact, that book is listed as the reference for the Master File book. So I doubt the canon of the Master File.

I won't. This whole book is based on a doushinji. So.... (Really, does Kawamori even look at this stuff anymore)

Suit yourself. *Shrugs* Over the years anime info/technical/guide books etc. published will often introduce new materials to retcon stuff to cater to a new generation of fans or meet the changing fan demographic. The case of the horde of Gundam books will attest to that.

It is after all a fictional technical book for fans who enjoys nit-picking over the shape of the VF-1s nosecones or whether or not it has the correct amount of bolts and nuts during assembly. It's a rivet-counter's wet dream come true.

Canon or not, it's up to the individual until the Supreme Macross Deity decides to issue a final judgment. Then again, I know some of you fans will cry out and complain anyway. :)

  4. Does anyone know exactly how canon this publication is? I'm noticing a lot of little details that are "significantly different" from other published sources.

    For example:

Pg 079-080: the VF-1 is indicated as having thermonuclear turbine engines that go from 0 to Mach 2.5, which change to thermonuclear ramjet engines that go from Mach 2.5 to 7.2, which change to thermonuclear scramjet engines that start at mach 7.2, and finally thermonuclear rocket engines for out-of-atmosphere use. - the larger speeds being in excess of the mach 3.87 at 30,000 m that the book itself states on pg 020!

Pg 094-095: ARMD 01 to 14 were produced. Other sources state only 8+2 were produced.

Pg 117: what I think reads as until the VF-4G, the VF-4 couldn't change to battroid or gerwalk!

It's called retconning. You should know by now no fictional world created by man ever escape this fate. B))

I'm accepting this book's info as canon because SK approved it. That is until a newer publication supersedes it.

  5. I agree with what you just said, sketch. Turn A was one of the most memorable animes I've seen in a long time partly because it didn't feel like it was a Gundam anime at all. The music written for it was gorgeous. It had this sweeping feel of nostalgic and epic at the same time. It's good stuff.

About the mecha designs for Turn A (Mods: I know this is off-topic but I'll keep it short here before someone whines/bitches) they are perhaps the most refreshing and unique design in a long while. It polarizes the fans because it was a total departure from what most anime mechas are usually expected to look like. I'm a fan of Syd Mead's works so his design is my cup of tea and that includes Mr. Moustache himself, the Turn A.

  6. The main gripe people have about Turn A is the titular Gundam and its prominent moustache. You can thank Syd Mead for that. The anime itself is pretty good if you look past the aesthetic of the Mobile Suit designs. Go watch it if you get a chance and judge it yourself.

As for the music, it's one of the better ones out there and it certainly is of better quality compared to some of the contemporary anime soundtracks.

  7. I think it's okay. I mean, what role and what series is Mari iijima most associated with?

If it were, I dunno, the guy who played Soldier A in episode 3 of Macross Zero, I'd agree. But not for Mari.

To me, at least, news about what Mari is up to is infinitely more interesting than news about, say, Macross Ultimate Frontier...since I don't play games. There will always be some news you're interested in, and some you're not.

    QFT

You will never always get what you want in the news anyway. So why worry about it? *Shrugs*

I trust the mods to do the right thing when deleting inappropriate posts and pruning the threads because it's their duty after all. Whether or not members will properly label every single news they come across is up to the individual posting because not everyone will follow rules. You can't expect everyone to toe the line hence why you have moderators and rules for posting.

    Just my two cents.

  8. Again, it's not a colony fleet. Emigration and Immigration are synonymous, but colonization is not.

    And for those disbelievers: 超長距離移民船団

Okay. I get your point. Thank you.

Keith: Macross 7 was the 37th, not the 31st EMIGRATION fleet.

    Just making it clear. B))

  9. Yes, and this is why we have to be extremely careful with the terminology we use.

New Macross class = combined Battle class and City class ships.

Battle Class Variable Stealth Attack Space Carrier (shortened to Battle class) = which, if memory serves, is shortened to NMC in the series (New Macross Carrier).

Exactly sketchley. That is what I understood as well.

For Macross 13, since it has NO city-ship attached and it's not part of the official colony/emigration fleet registry, it is misleading when the carrier is also given the designation "Macross" except maybe to evoke the legendary vessel's name.

Like Gubaba mentioned earlier, Macross 13 could be a codename for the entire secret fleet tasked to defend the Earth. As to what and how many ships are in the fleet, that is still unknown.

  10. LOL... Well, for what is worth... the man has been involved on so many anime projects doing anything from the story to the mecha designs that I really don't blame him about it. Give the guy a break...

Btw... Wait until you see the Macross The First Manga... Just another Macross production with different uniform, mecha and situations on it...

That means more reason to make more toys, models or figures! What it translates to fans means a lighter wallet and a crapload of credit card bills.

  11. I'm not entirely certain that the Macross Galaxy Fleet is the 21st New Macross Fleet. It does have the 21st New Macross Carrier, aka 21st Battle (class) ship.

That's what Keith is getting at. The '21' he is referring to points to Battle Galaxy being the 21st Battle-class ship.

  12. Agreed. Let's not make any conclusions until we've got clarification from the Chronicles or other canonical sources.

Since sketchley has been kind enough to translate the stuff, let's read it to be informed before posting any speculations.
