  1. I bought the first two eps on DVD yesterday and watched them.

The good: The aircraft designs are sweet, the graphics are sweet, the sound fx are sweet, and as a whole the production is visually quite stunning.

The bad: Why are all the main characters such PUSSIES? The NPCs getting vaped by the wayside are more interesting than these pansy-boys. What's more, no reason is ever given for their clinical depression. Another thing: are those two estranged gay lovers, or what? They sure act like it. Is that where the planet gets its name?

The ugly: No discernable plot so far that I can see, aside from the vague references to the Yukikaze being alive and conscious somehow. There is no background info on the plot or the characters, other than the antarctic warp thing. No information on the Jam or their motivations, and nothing on what the human forces are attempting to accomplish on the green planet. Who the hell would name a planet FAIRY?

Basically, so far Yukikaze looks like an excuse to showcase some killer CG work at the expense of a story, characters, or plot development. Hell, a plot for an OVA about ace fighter pilots in sweet looking planes battling aliens would NOT have been too hard to develop. Nice eye candy, but Macross it AIN'T!

    Visuals / Sound : 4/5 stars

Everything else: 1/5 stars and a big raspberry.

  2. I was looking for some good aerospace combat/ dogfighting anime, and someone recommended Macross Plus. That got me started.

I enjoyed M+ so much that I started to look into other things Macross, and wound ordering the SDF Macross series from animeigo, which hooked me on the storyline and characters.

Now I'm looking at buying my first Hase 1/72 kit. The addiction is deepening...

  3. Agreed. Watching the way guys like Fokker used the canyons and stuff in Macross Zero, it's hard to believe a trained Valk pilot couldn't sucker the Ghost into a tight spot and vape it.

It'd be fun to watch Hikaru duke it out with the ghost in an old fashioned VF-1.

  4. The whole thing with the Isamu/Guld dogfight near the surface used to bug me until I saw the original SDF Macross TV series. Here is a possible explanation:

When the two arrive at Earth, it is past nightfall in Macross City and the concert is underway. Guld and Isamu's low altitude duel happens in a city where it is still daylight. After seeing the devastation that Earth suffered in SDF-M, I now assume that this fight takes place near the abandoned ruins of a former city, where there are no people. The fight then goes back to high altitude, is resolved, and everything between Guld and the Ghost happens up high as well. Isamu then heads for Macross City and has it out with Sharon.

    Make sense?

  5. Sort of seems like they succeeded, too. Guld gets vaped in the prototype 21, and Isamu steals the 19 and tears up the Macross with it. They pretty much have to end the story right there and then, because after he finished hugging Myung I'm sure a great big shitburger hit the fan both on Earth and on Eden.

Probably not a coincidence that there is no mention of Isamu anywhere after plus, eh? :p

  6. Can someone give me a basic plot synopsis of the Macross 7 series?

I've watched the original SDF Macross and loved it, same for Macross Plus, both the movie and OVA versions. I've got DYRL on order but haven't seen it yet. I understand that the 'canon' view is that DYRL is a 'movie within a movie' remembering the events of SDF Macross. (I've seen Zero 1-3 as well)

I've heard bits and snatches about 7, but I'm curious as to what people thought about it. Was it a good series or not? Everyone seems to agree that Macross 2 stunk, and that it's considered an alternative universe or something like that.

So what's the scoop on 7? Edumacate me.
