  1. I doubt that is accurate, more likely they have reaction engines that are air breathing in atmosphere and pure reaction in space, which is exactly the same thing the VFs do. I suspect you misunderstood the meaning of air-breathing. It doesn't mean it is a conventional jet engine that using jet fuel but it means it literally takes in air and uses that for propulsion (via heating it to plasma with the thermonuclear fusion reactors in the engines). In space the reactors just push out direct plasma in large quantities instead since there is no air to use (which is massively inefficient and wasteful but the UNS/NUNS has a surplus on power generation capability, in other words "Screw the rules, we have power!")

EDIT: Looking at M3, I can see why it is confusing, and perhaps possible I might even be wrong here. Welp... Seto?

Looking at various line art and models of the Cat's Eye and from what it says on macross2.net the ES-11 does indeed have two pairs of engines. Two normal Air-breathing, located on the rear fuselage, its hidden somewhat by its radar dish in a lot of line art pics the exhaust ports are right on the sides of the tail with its intakes directly under its radome.

And its two reaction engines mounted in the wings.

  2. As for the destruction they caused, there's no mention of them having killed anyone (presumably the towers were evacuated when the attack alert came in, or the residents were away at the ceremony), and because Millard took the blame and the UN Spacy had to cover up the illegal hardware in the Ghost X-9, that kind of got swept under the rug. Isamu remained in the UN Spacy and served as one of the test pilots for the YF-24 program in 2057. As of 2059, he retired at the rank of Major and was flying for SMS.

I heard somewhere that the city they fought in was abandoned because all its residents left on the colonization ships though I dont know how true that is.

Makes sense given how deserted the city was and how little to no backlash there was for the destruction. Though Plus did sorta end abruptly before we could find out for sure but if Isamu being a Major with the SMS is any indication maybe just a slap on the wrist and a dock in pay was all that happened or maybe he joined the SMS to pay for the damages and is still paying for them to this day.

  3. Not sure why they'd need a battery, since the fighter's two reactors should be more than equal to the task of powering the gun... but what you've described is pretty much what deploying the ordinance container gets you in GERWALK mode apart from the size issue.

Well with how fast weapon tech is advancing I wonder what a state of the art gunpod the size of of the VF-27's would be capable of now?

I kinda want to see a return of a giant shell firing gunpod like the one Kinryu used with his armored VF-11.

I think the issue with Delta valks, as cool and awesome as all their integrated weapons are, is the lack in the accessories department and the accessories they do have are only seen at most twice more in passing in the whole series.

A Full Armored 262 would be pretty cool to see even if it was the more traditional B mode only affair though I guess it would defeat the purpose of playing in the anti-VF VF role.

Oh and I know this is off the current topic a little but what was the purpose of having normal air-breathing jet engines in conjunction with reaction engines on the ES-11D Cat's Eye?

Since it had two reaction engines wouldn't it be more efficient to just run on that all the time instead of switching to a gas guzzling normal turbine for in atmosphere use? And those normal jets would just be dead weight in space.

  4. If it makes you feel better, it is almost certainly a a Prius lookalike with absolutely nothing of the original powertrain preserved. Just retro styling.

Is it really retro styling when cars like the Nissan Rouge or the Honda Insight that appeared in ep1 of Delta technically didn't exist yet in the Macross universe because the Earth got blown to crap before they were supposed to be created. And the cars the surviving earthers had werent Prius's but these 80's style futuristic cars. The SDF-1 had them, Eden had them, Island 7 had them, I think Frontier had them to a certain extent, can't remember exactly but I think I recall seeing an RX-8 a few times.

I totally get Ozma's Delta Integrale because it is a car that existed before the ASS-1 landed on earth, but in order for the likes of the Rouge and Insight to exist in the Macross timeline they would've had to been manufactured at the same time those futuristic cars were in a post rebuild earth after the launch of the first Megaroads.

Another possibility is those old futuristic looking cars are a fading automotive era in Macross by the time of Delta and are being replaced by our real world cars which are actually contemporary to 2067.

Or it could be just Al-Shahal, being modeled after Dubai and having a planet full of fossil fuels.

  5. For the most part, handguns and other firearms seem to be one of the things in Macross that haven't really visibly benefitted from OTM. Outside of the original series, where we had caseless machine guns and other fun toys, rifles and pistols seem to be mostly the same as modern weapons.

She's in good company, since SMS seems to issue Glocks to its people, Frontier New UN Forces infantry use a clone of the H&K G36, the security forces in City 7 had AR-15s, and so on...

SDFM also had some other really cool original designs that weren't VF's like the those VTOL cargo and passenger planes and of course the good'ol Cat's Eye.

Macross 7 gave us space bikes, sports cars, and police mecha.

Frontier gave us a cool sleek looking interstellar luxury liner.

And Delta has given us a an interstellar Cargo ship, Walkure's Shuttle, and a boring looking transport that Messer took off on.

The older series had more original designs than later series, I guess using a pre existing CG model of something is far more efficient than creating something from the ground up.

And whats up with all the plain looking real cars lately, what happened to those futuristic sci-fi looking ones from DYRL and Mylene's car? Its like everybody said those cars a boring, I want a Nissan Rogue instead. At least the Aerial Knights have been given the cool car treatment.

  6. You're misremembering, I'm afraid.

It's the fighter you race him with BEFORE you get the YF-30 for the first time that suffers engine trouble, causing you to lose the race. (On New Game Plus, this is literally whatever fighter you're flying, even the YF-29.) The second race when you're using the YF-30 is then interrupted by Guld and Brera attacking you and dumping you into one of those trench runs.

Damn... I assumed it was taken from you/Leon because it needed repairs and given back to you at the end of the game.

Doesn't help I literally didn't understand 95% of the game.

Oh well thanks for the clarification.

  7. I just updated the gallery with additions such as the:

VF-0 Phoenix with and with out the Angel Ghost booster package

    VF-0D

SV-51y with and without its wing mounted boosters

A quartet of Ghost Fighters including the ones in Zero and Frontier and of course the infamous X-9 from Plus

    A Macross 7 P*L*U*S* style VF-14 Vampire

And last but not least the SV-262Hs Drakken III

As a bonus heres some Screenshots of a VF-171 Nightmare Plus dogfighting against two hard to hit, very small, and nimble drones.

  8. Speaking of Ace Combat. I'm reminded of (I believe) Ace Combat III. The one with the kid living in a town occupied by an enemy fighter squadron. Kid is the narrator of the game. The cut scenes have super limited animation. Might just be all still images. On the other hand the story within the cut scenes is engaging. A good story can make up for animation that is lacking. If there's good animation at least you can make up for a weak story by looking at the pretty pictures.

You're off by one, the Ace Combat you were referring to was IV. And yes the atmosphere around those "cutscenes" were fantastic.

  9. True enough, but transmission in Frontier was very mundane, through birth, blood transfusions, etc, the bacteria did not fold by themselves. Berger managed to take fold bacteria into a whole other level. This also makes me wonder why more people aren't dying now, because what makes the bacteria favor the gut instead of the brain?

You can thank Ranka for this one.

When she saved Sheryl from her Fold Microbe infection by somehow guiding the little buggers to her gut, Ranka basically taught the microbes to live inside of a humanoid's gut instead of their brain.

Now fast forward to the Vajra leaving the galaxy, the Microbes once living inside their Vajra hosts now folded their way into not only the gut of humanoids but apparently inside our cells as well.

Nah. Kaos gets their VF-31s from Surya Aerospace.

Well Berger did say he dealt in arms, so maybe a fresh supply of replacement arms for Hayate's Valk?

Y'know cause he keeps loosing his...

okay I'll let myself out now.

  10. Um... not quite. The "Philosopher's Stone" was the codename for the large, super-high purity fold quartz integrated into the fold wave system of the YF-29. AFAIK, the fold quartz insert panels on the dorsal hull are part of the fold wave projector system instead.

    Ah, duly noted.

I always thought that's just what they called those crystals.

So does that mean a Durandal is more capable in resonating with fold waves than a Seigfried or is it the size and purity that make it potent while the Siegfried and Chronos use a more efficient design without the need for such a large crystal?

  11. If anybody else saw the Macross Delta Short, I have a quick question.

That bit with Mirage at the end where she had to get an autograph from Mikumo for grandpa Max.

Where Kumo-Kumo was doing the hand motions and Mirage saying she couldn't give the autograph to Max anymore.

I guess the joke completely flew over my head but can somebody explain what went down between the two?

  12. Oh.. I see.

I thought the C/F/E/S is something like "performance-test" while A is the production model, akin to VF-25A vs G/E/S/F.

That makes sense since they have to provide "Ground-support" for Walkure.

It is interesting to see that while Delta's 31 is low-speed optimized, the rival Draken (with its' delta wing) is high speed oriented.

Another difference between the 31A and 31C/E/F/J/S's is that Delta Platoon 31's have two "Philosopher Stone" Fold Quartz crystals installed on the upper plate of their chest/upper fuselage that allow the Siegfried to resonate with something producing high enough fold waves unlocking a greater potential than the 31A Kairos.

Oh and the 31A Kairos has larger canards over the 31 Seigfried's to compensate for the Center-of-Lift being more rearward due to its delta wing while the Seigfried has it's CoL more forward due to the FSW's.

  13. I want Myung to be Lady M for the sole purpose of hearing Voices sung again. Its practically about the Windermerians singing about Wind, Wings, and Apples and struggling to reach somewhere within a single life and its english portion mentions calling out to someone through the wind.

But I know its a slim chance since Berger mentioned M has been researching the "power of song" since the end of Space War 1, but I guess pretty much everything counts as after Space War 1. Lady M is more than likely to be a new character, probably related to someone we knew.

Or it could be Kaifun for all we know, maybe he made enough money off parading Fire Bomber American around and using his family relations to Minmay to buy himself a private army we know as Xaos.

  14. As I've said before, I hope we get a season 2 of this with budget for more mecha combat.

Seems 7 episodes is gonna be a bit tight to tie up everything, unless we get a really rushed ending.

And more time really needs to be spent of developing some of the supporting characters as well. Chuck, Arad and Mirage have hardly had any screen time recently. Feels like we hardly know them.

Or they'll pull an Evangelion and it with a movie or two.

  15. As much as I don't like Berger, I want his pipe.

I was surprised that Mirage was surprised about that whole Fire Bomber thing. I don't really understand much of whats being said due to lack of subtitles so maybe she was surprised over something else? If not maybe Millia and Max both drove their children so far up a wall that Miranda left home and settled down at the edge of the galaxy to be as far away from her parents as possible and also in the process losing touch with her siblings. And Mirage probably not too interested in an old rockband but occasionally listening to their music never knew her aunt was a member because her mom never told her?
