Also what is with the awful encoding? Their release somehow manages to look worse than the Chinese POPGO releases, while having much larger filesizes.

How actually is Thora's encoding bad? The file size is big, but Thora's releases all compress as little as possible for the sake of "transparency".

Personally, I find that Thora's video (~600MB) look the same as the HDTV-ripped one (~300MB) -- well, I didn't pause to view fast-motion scenes, since that's not how I watch a show. So if you say Thora release is bigger than necessary, yes, possibly. However, the less compression, the better, and HD space is cheap.

I checked POPGO 720p release notes and it's around 1.5GB for 3 episodes? That's 500MB per episode, not much smaller.

I don't like the Ghost In The Shell / The Matrix type of powers shown by Grace. At times, I thought I was watching GiTS.

I also think the transition of Grace from meek manager to super-villian is too sudden. IIRC, the first obvious clue was when she was evasdropping on the meeting.

Internet allows you to externalize your hate. You feel you got to share to everyone what you hate about something and the worse part, always repeating it.

I just ignore the parts that I don't like. I don't think too much about them. After all, why remind myself of something I don't like?

Speaking as someone who has read a lot of Archies, from old ones (70s, I believe) to the early 2000s, I don't care. It doesn't matter whether you read 1 or 1,000 Archie comics. There is no overall plot. The characters can be smart, dumb, kind, selfish or whatever depending on the story. Every story is standalone and is too short. There's no depth at all. And the stories are reused over the years.

I would like the Archies better if there's a definite timeline / overall plot to let the characters grow. The series can be rebooted every few years, like Transformers.

Has Thora done anything past episode 18 yet?

I saw ep 19 and 20 on their IRC server. Apparently they enforce a 50kB/s download rate, so if you can achieve that, it's worth a try.

been watching the THORA BD versions and while they look amazing, i find myself preferring the gg subs translation, so combining the two would be double win for me. i heard though that i can't just use the gg subs file to go with the THORA release since the timings are probably different, and even if knew how to do script re-timing, i wouldn't want to go through that time-consuming method.

so what i was thinking was, if the THORA softsubs were editable, i would keep their timings and just cut and paste the gg script. i have absolutely no idea whether this is feasible so appreciate if you can enlighten me on that. thanks

I would think it's easier to swap a different script than just to swap the text. Re-timing should be just be a matter of shifting the start time?

I googled and found mkvtoolnix to create/edit MKV. You should download MkvExtractGUI as well for the GUI frontend for the extraction part. With these two, you will be able to extract the subtitles, edit it and merge it back.

I also found this pretty old page How To Convert MKV Files To AVI With Subtitles that describes using MkvExtractGUI to extract the streams, using Subtitle Workshop to edit the subtitles and finally using AutoGK to convert to AVI. Screenshots are provided, so it should be easy to follow.

How old's your PC? it could just be a codec issue.

It's more of H.264 at 3.8Mbps than MKV (which is just a container).

I thought it was Xvid before I downloaded (due to its huge size) and was surprised it couldn't play on my ancient P-III 850 MHz notebook. (Which handles H.264 at 600kbps fine.)

While i don't mind grain being stabilized in extreme cases like DYRL, I'm not a fan of DNR. It is too often used in the extreme (just look at the B-G release of DYRL or the screencaps coming out of the new Star Trek IV blu ray).

After I wrote that, I'm glad Gubaba left the grain intact so that we can do our own post-processing.

In the future, dual-layer BD should have enough space to store both versions!

To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with it, either at first...it looked really washed out. And then I noticed how much more detail there was.

I like the R2 muted colors more. It's just more natural. The R1 looks like a disney cartoon.

Good work on your R2 project! 4Mbps is an overkill, but the high bitrate also gives me a chance to filter it with a little DNR. While it's notable to try to preserve as much details as possible, I find that grain and digital displays just don't go together.

(I tried playback filtering, but it doesn't work very effectively.)

Sorry for digging up this old thread, but I saw DYRL losing out and I just can't ignore it.

I like DYRL because it tells a very tight story: concert to battle to being trapped to being rescued to a date to being captured to escape to Earth to... there's no useless nor redundant scene. Like others said, it captures the essence of the TV series. There's still a love triangle, although it's different from the TV series. Also, I thought it was self-contained (quite rare for movies of TV series, I found). You don't need any background info. (Even the questions in earlier posts are answered, or implied, in the movie. You just need to watch it more closely.)

Many a times, I told myself I would just watch the first ten minutes to reminisce. Right. I always ended up watching all the way.

Now, if there's a more tightly edited version of the TV series of 20 episodes, I may feel differently.

I know this is all late and wrong but I give it a 9. I just finished the series.

I went into this show thinking I was gonna hate it. Boy was I wrong. Im not going to break it down into categories. But the animation was great. The story was good. The japanese "actors" sounded right. But I do wish it was a little longer.

Oh and I really didnt like the music until about half way through then it really grew on me.

I didn't bother with Frontier because I just wasn't interested in it. And when I read it was a rehash of the original, it was enough reason for me to give it a miss.

I must say I enjoyed the show very much!

It resembles the original, but still has its originality (and threw fans many curves along the way). One thread mentioned that Hiroshi was brought in halfway and he changed the story. I couldn't tell (plot-wise), so it's not as bad as it seems.

3D graphics are well-integrated, unlike Macross Zero.

There were a ton of homage, but I thought most were quite well-done. (Surprisingly, the one I hate the most is in the last ep. Reminds me too much of DYRL.)

Fan service is a notch too high. Nothing out of place for anime, but it makes it hard to recommend to non-anime people.

At first I thought the music was the weakest link, but it grew on me too. In fact, I'm listening to the OST as I typed this!

I always thought it was a stretch to squeeze a city (as shown) into the 1.2km Macross. Why not admit the figure was wrong and that Macross was really 12.0km long?

Did Macross look 1.2km in the show? It looked much longer than that.

It doesn't matter how rare #6 is, because I'm not interested in it.

IIRC, #6 wasn't that difficult to find when I picked up #1 (blue), #3 (both) and #5 a few years ago, perhaps because it wasn't in demand! At that time, I felt it was harder to find #4 than #5.

Then again, the supply and demand is different on eBay and YahooJapan.

Yellow almost certainly knows about Aisha and hints are dropped by the rest of the cast but it's impossible to say they definitely knew. They certainly do seem to suspect it much more than in Robotech.

I've watched Mospeada very carefully and only Yellow and Stick suspected her.

Actually, Aisha herself knew she was an Inbit in one of the episodes, but she still gave a hysterical reaction a few episodes later when it became known to everyone.

Looking at both CM and MH's Mospeada, I realized that perhaps they have taken the anime too literally. Just think about it. Half the motorbike becomes the chest armour and the other half is carried on the back. Nothing goes to the legs and arms? Doesn't that mean the leg parts must be very strong and heavy in the first place? No, people walked normally.

I think to do a proper Mospeada transforming figure, part of the bike must go to the hands and legs. Won't this make the head and hands too small? No problem. That's what the helmet is for. As for the hands, there could be an extra layer of gloves.

There is a blanket answer for questions like that: Anime Magic.

If it's anime magic, I'll like to have the option to remove that part in the "robot" mode for better posability. MH is not perfect transformation anyway, right?

Isn't hiding half the bike behind the figure cheating? It doesn't look like that in the show. Where are the parts supposed to go in the show?

The campfire diorama is nice, but I'll rather have Ray and Yellow in civilian clothing than the ride armour. Stick is often in his ride armour, but not the others.

Waiting for the next generation figures that allow the ride armour to be taken off...
