I am in no way attempting to mitigate your concerns.  Merely approaching this from a biological point of view:

People of the far north (Inuit, Eskimos, and so on) also have darker skins, because of their diet.  (Apparently it's a vitamin D rich diet from fatty fish that are naturally rich in vitamin D).

Doesn't the high level of reflected light from the snow have something to do with that too?

Snowblindness was a real problem for them and that's caused by reflected UV from snow.

Of course, if the mermaids live at the bottom of the ocean, then they should have "skin" like the Blind Congo River Spiny Eel: https://www.jungledragon.com/image/59447/the_blind_congo_river_spiny_eel_mastacembelus_brichardi_lives_in_the_turbid_waters_of_the_congo_river.html

(but I don't think anyone wants to see a movie where the heroine has skin like that! )

It wouldn't be the weirdest romance we've seen in fantasy.

When things are whitewashed it’s completely acceptable to bash it. So why not the other way? Just saying. I’m not trying to debate but there is a double standard with things like this.

I don't completely disagree but I feel like the context matters more than the race.

Like, if it's a community theater production they have to make do with whoever auditions.  But in Hollywood they have a talent pool that's deep enough that doing it arbitrarily or because they're too lazy to cast a person who matches the author's intentions for the character it's wrong no matter what way it's going like casting ScarJo for Ghost in the Shell

If they're doing a reimagining of a story that changes the setting to a different location or time period it's more acceptable because the context of the story is different.  Like if Bollywood decided to do a West Side Story reimagining set in Kashmir about an Indian man and Pakistani woman or something, that would be more OK becuase the context is completely different even if the broad strokes are the same.  The Wiz is another good example since that one was set in more modern times with Dorothy being a girl from Harlem.

It's way too early to tell if they're going to make major changes to The Little Mermaid.  I'm a little worried we're looking at musical racial stereotyping in good old fashioned Disney tradition though.

I'm positive Hans Christian Andersen, Danish author (1805-1875), had a Nubian princess in mind as the inspiration for the character of Ariel...

It doesn't make a ton of sense biologically.  Not that mermaids make sense biologically anyway.

Melanin is natural insulation against UVB radiation which is why peoples from equatorial latitudes have more of it.  Mermaids live on the ocean floor.  In clear ocean water only 1% of light makes it down to 200 meters.  There's no reason for mermaids to have a high level of melanin because the water is already protecting them from UVB radiation.  Unless they live in shallow coastal waters less than 20m deep they should be like vampire levels of pale.  Ariel's family live in a freaking underwater castle so they're probably deeper than that.

As a black person I'm not sure I'm ok with this kind of casting decision.  Like I get wanting minorities to have more representation in Hollywood but randomly making characters other ethnicities for no reason except representation feels more like a step back towards blaxploitation but with a better budget.  At the time this story was written the Danish government was still kind of struggling with the idea that black people were people.  They didn't even completely abolish slavery until 11 years after the story was first published.  Don't even get me started on the problems that would cause if they decide to make the prince black too.

  3. After 5 episodes I'm dropping Domestic Girlfriend.  I'm all for drama in romance but this show doesn't have drama it has relentless misery.  Natsuo is miserable because he's crushing on his teacher Hina who is in a relationship.  Hina is miserable because she's the other woman to an unfaithful husband.  Rui is miserable because Hina is miserable and she's socially awkward.  Their parents are miserable because they don't understand why their kids are miserable.  And now there's a suicidal girl too.  This is daily soaps levels of messed up but without the camp it's just depressing.

I have higher hopes for Magical Sempai.  It seems like a fun little comedy after the first episode.  Nobunaga Teacher's Young Bride and To The Abandoned Sacred Beasts sound like fun too.

I put Servant x Service back into the lunchtime lineup as a pick me up after that depressing mess Domestic Girlfriend.

MUCH better than last season's premiere.

Well yeah. That's setting the bar awfully low though isn't it?

The season two premiere is the 2nd episode of Disco to actually feel like Star Trek.  If they had started like I might actually not hate Burnham.

I know, I know.  I just miss that mature style of story telling and intensity in the newer Macross world. And YES, I know why it is what it is.

For my money it doesn't necessarily have to be mature storytelling as long as it's effective storytelling.

If you can't get invested in the characters what's the point.  Like for Delta it's hard to give a damn about Walkure or most of the other characters because we barely know anything about them.

Again, the Eternity comics days don't look so bad anymore...

Isn't that kinda like saying "Next to ebola, terminal lung cancer doesn't sound so bad anymore."?

Everything about Titan's comic is horrible but the stuff that came before it wasn't better, just horrible in slightly different ways. If they can't go all in on hiring professionals to do a quality job why bother? This mess is just embarrassing to look at.

Nah, it's nothing against furries, it's literally Sonic himself. That fur looks... BAD. Like, it makes him look like he has terrible body odor.

    That'd be truth in television.

Small rodents smell pretty bad. Rabbits are so stanky that they sell dietary additives to make them stink less. Porcupines are even worse and smell like oily garbage no matter what you do. A hedgehog the size of a person probably stinks like a compost pile.

At least it's something NEW. You only have to screw away an IP once... besides, everyone will spam the review threads on other forums & social media posts with the Racist Mario video (unless its banned for "copywrite" BS...)

SEGA has been screwing that IP for decades.

I don't know why they would even try after what happened to Super Mario.

I would like to hear your thoughts about Academic Gender Studies and/or Female Character Analysis in regards to Robotech. ... Furthermore, I would like to critique Robotech as a work of art through the lens of Gender Studies and Female Character Analysis.  ... I am interested in your ideas about Robotech and its interpretation as it relates to Jungian Archetypes and Freudian Analysis. ... In the future I hope to analyze Robotech through the disciplines of Formalism, Structuralism, Ecocriticism, Post-Modernism, Post-Colonialism, Moralism, Marxism, and Psychoanalysis.

Um I get the feeling you really epically overthought this.  It's a toy commercial.  It was made to sell plastic model kits from Revell's flop of a Transformers mockbuster.  That's all there is to it.  All the actual substance is from the original shows.

You could probably get a good women's studies term paper out of the stupidly misogynistic writing in Southern Cross tho.  It's not every day someone is ballsy enough to try to pass off a girl who only wants to be a housewife as a strong female character.

Also that is a LOT of pretentious academic buzzwords.  Like woah.  It's been ages since college but aren't Freud and Jung both hopelessly outdated and unreliable psychological models?

I hope to answer the following questions with this post.  What are we responding to within Robotech?  What intrigues us about Robotech?  What resonates with us about Robotech?  Why do I like Robotech?

    1. The content of the original shows
    2. The content of the original shows
    3. The content of the original shows
    4. Medically speaking there's no accounting for taste

Well I must admit to struggling with the notion that giant armoured soldiers fighting mechanised insectoid hive aliens is somehow more boring than earth humans in tights.

You're really struggling with the idea that stories need to have actual characters and a conflict the audience can be invested in on their behalf?  That's the basics of storytelling.

You can't have any characters or character development when your entire cast is unthinking mooks with no personality and half of them are literally faceless.  There's no story to tell.  It's just literally mindless violence.

"We've ripped off everything else already, so what can we crib from Terminator?"

RT never could get anywhere when it was trying to be original anyway.

The less original it is the more RT fans like it.  Some of them even say that this comic changes too much from the TV series and is bad for that reason instead of because its writing and art suck.

As are most talking-head Youtube videos.

The Picard-series is still in Pre-pre-production stage so we are looking at 2020, at the earliest.

What's our ETA to the complaints about social justice casting like we had in Discovery?

I wasn't impressed by STD season 1 so my hopes aren't high for the Picard series.  Whenever Trek tries to push a social agenda in casting the writing takes a dive until they back off.  Like can we get a black woman character who isn't either a strong black woman who don't need no man or a sassy black woman?  I can't stand Michael Burnham because she's totally the embodiment of that one line Nichelle Nichols wouldn't say in Star Trek 6 about "would you let your daughter marry one".  I guess they figured that Burnham's racism would fly under the radar better if it came from someone who was a minority.

Also, the kickstarters killed all incentive to move forward with the franchise.

Personally I think that HG's loss of faith in the series happened a lot earlier than that.

Tommy Yune made a lot of promises to his bosses about what RTSC was gonna do to revitalize RT's prospects.  It was supposed to legitimize RT as an original series in the industry's eyes.  It was supposed to make RT into a popular mainstream anime title.  It was supposed to bring in all kinds of new young fans who would buy all kinds of merch.  It was supposed to make the world take notice of RT.

When Tommy's baby didn't deliver on all of his promises and even people who were already RT fans mostly hated it, I think TPTB there at HG gave up on trying to do new stuff.  They threw a mil at it and got no real result so why bother?  The fans buy HG's bad Macross knockoff toys and posters no matter what.  Everything they did since then was like a half-assed job to convince us that the lights were still on in the RT department.  I don't think they really expected the Kickstarter to get funded.  I think they thought they could just go "Well we tried!" when it failed and talk about how they're still working on it for years at cons without having to spend any money or actually do any work.  I don't think even that failed tabletop game was meant to succeed and go past doing the Macross stuff.  They picked a scale that made it impossible to do the next parts.  Even this comic is totally obviously written to milk nostalgia for some quick money.  They even set it up so they don't have to continue the story past the Macross part because this version is a stable Macross only time loop.

I think the goal now is just to shake the fans down for as much cash as they can using nostalgia for Macross before the end of their license.
