  1. Welcome! And your pics are incredible. How I wish I have such a nice display!

    Hi everyone.

After lurking around the forums for the past five years, I guess it's time I post some pics of my collection on the forums as well... I'm originally from South Africa, (the country) and as a kid I used to watch Robotech when it started airing on TV in 1985. It's been my favourite series of all growing up in the 80's $ 90's, even outranking classics such as Knight Rider, Airwolf, McGuyver, Star Trek, ect. ect... We never really had any RT toys or merchandice in SA, so we were stuck with He-Man, Thundercats, BraveStarr & Ninja Turtle figures for entertainment (...not really complaining ^_^ ). Later we picked up some Beast Wars transformable figures, but by then I had moved on to other things. I had discovered RT.com for the first time at work while still in SA, and I remember a few names including "Reflex Point" from those years. My addy was "FALCON 1", and some other hothead going by "falcon1" got pissed thinking I was trying to steal his name or something, lol. Anyway we ended up on eachother's good side, but when I saw the "masterpiece collection" valkyries for the first time... I about s#@% my pants!

  2. Calm down...

Personally, probably a longer nose would do. I understand if the canopy is shorter than that in the anime. But the shorter nose is because that Yamato decided "it would look better in battroid mode". While I know why they did it, I like the scale of the old 1D better.

BTW, I don't need an excuse to dislike a design.

Everyone keeps on bashing the length of the nose/canopy on the V.2 VF-1D, how its not line accurate or that its not long enough like the anime and because of it they are not going to get it.....

Honestly, that excuse is utterly ridiculous, I mean its still a pretty damn good rendition of the plane. I mean think a little here folks...have you ever wonder why or thought why they decided to keep it shorter? I'll tell you why, its cause the damn plane can transform into battroid!!....which means it needs to have a blast shield to cover over the canopy! It's impossible to make a longer blast shield that can cover a longer canopy in battroid and then have it slide/hide away in plane mode. Thats the reason why the cockpit/canopy/nose of the plane is/seems smaller than the actual anime design....the design of the toy just won't allow it. If they tried to make it longer than the toy would no longer be perfect trasformation, they would have to make a extra seperate piece for the blast shield to snap on when in battroid.

So before you go bashing a practically good design, think a little about how the toy is made/designed first and whether or not its even possible.

Just so you can compare yourself, here are two links below, link one is a hasegawa model of the VF-1D (anime accurate) and the second is yamato's v.2 version, as you can see, if yamato made the canopy/nose super accurate like hasegawa's model, it would be impossible to hide a long enough blast shield and the toy would not be perfect transformation.

  3. Yes... I was tempted to buy one when I first saw its pics on the web. Very nice model.

But then where I learn about the size, I decided to wait for a bigger version. Again, it looks nice, but weird if placed next to my valkyries. I am not asking an enormous model, but I expect something that is of similar height head-to-head.

I know it won't be cheap... But in that case I am more willing to pay.

Yes, totally... it is small and expensive.

However it looks very nice and details.

I hope Yamato or Bandai will do a bigger scale of it, like 1/3000 or 1/4000.

  4. I have reserved mine too, but it is sad that the old 1/60 looks better than the version 2.

I know many people love the version 2, but I am still not impressed... It's good, but is it that good?

Yeah, I hate to say it, but I preferred the old "mosquito nose" on the original 1/60 VF-1D. The new one looks a little stubby. But it's not terrible, I'll still get one because I luvs me some two-seaters. It's been said that the stubby-ish nose is actually more correct (which is why the 1/48 was also "stubby nosed" compared to the 1/60). The problem is, the long canopy on the -1D accentuates the shortness of the nose on the new sculpt where on the old one it looked "just right" while the single-seaters looked long and spindly.

  5. Just in case you missed... You can buy the fast packs separately.

Sorry if I misunderstood you. ^_^

Yeah, the side parts should have been included. But we have been begging them since we heard about it way before the release and... um... nothing... what?

One thing that IS bothering me is the GNU with the fp parts. Why must they have come out with an FP version now and not just give it to us straight from the get go. I really like the GNU figures. I like them much better than those cheap revoltechs regardless of their amazing poseability but I dont want to buy the YF-19 and YF-21 all over again for the fast packs. The revys at least came with the FP to start with. Problem is that I dont like the way they look.

  6. Let me do some calculation too!

The current exchange rate of HK dolalr vs Yen is 0.083

    A VF-1S SSP costs 13440 yen, convert to HK$1115.52

However, the local shop only charges for HK$788, that means 788/1115 = 70% of the suggested price. Convert back to yen, yen 9408.

As this is not an "overstock" price, this means even when selling at this price, the shop can make a profit (although I know their margin is not high, but there is a margin).

This is the price from the shop; on top of it, we have the HK distributor. Suppose they make a margin of 10% (including the transportation costs), they bought it from Yamato for around 8550yen.

This is just a quick guess. In fact, the price in HK is cheap maybe because the shipping cost is cheaper from China to HK.

When discussing whether Yamato is too greedy, one really needs to discuss this using Yen prices, not US prices, which are currently artificially high due to the crappy exchange rate. And of course you should not factor in shipping cost to you overseas as that is nothing to do with Yamato.

Anyway IIRC, a standard 1/48 VF-1 without FAST Packs cost Yamato somewhere between 4,500 to 5,000 Yen each to produce. This is what Yamato has to pay the factory in China.

The MSRP in Japan for a 1/48 VF-1 is 14,800 Yen, but this is of course not what Yamato sells the toys for.

Again if I remember correctly what I was told, Yamato will normally sell the toys to a wholesaler at about 50-60% off the MSRP. The wholesaller will then sell the toy to a retail store at about 25-30% less than MSRP.

The retail store then marks up to MSRP, or there abouts.

Yamato is only actually making about 1,000 to 2,000 yen per 1/48.

  7. I really have no idea how large is the Yamato Macross toys market. If it sells VERY well, I should have seen them in almost every toy shop, but I don't.

When compared to Bandai, Yamato does not enjoy the economic of scale - that Bandai can allocate the big fixed costs over large quantity of products - and so we can expect Yamato goods to be more expensive than Bandai's.

The scale is now so different between Bandai and Yamato, and you can imagine how much easier Bandai can manage costs.

    - It has more power to negotiate with suppliers (cheaper costs on raw materials and services). Losing Bandai means losing a lot of business.

    - It has more power to negotiate with distributors (higher prices to sell to distributors). Losing Bandai means your shops won't have items like, Gundam. What would a toy shop without Gundam like?

Now look at how Bandai and Yamato charges... I think Bandai is greedy, and Yamato is careless (in QC).

  8. Yes, it says they accept preorder before noon Dec 15 .

Sorry for the very bad translation. I just used an online translation site. Reservation due date: 2008/12/15. Hmmm does this mean you can early bird preorder on December 15 or is the release date on the 15th????

  9. According to the shop owner from whom I frequently buy from, there's no news on the Tomahawk OD yet. I mean, he hasn't received the price info to place orders on them.

On the other hand, the Defender should be released before X'mas.

Anyone heard if the Olive Drab Tomahawk is on time for a December release?

Also, it seems strange that none of the online retailers I frequent has put up a preorder for the Defender yet. (HLJ, BBTS, LAF Toys, etc.)

  10. I like his death in the TV series better...

He went back for the pineapple salad... So he died of a pilot, but died as a lover. :o

while my vote would go to Hikaru's VF-1S... Roy (the character) still is ace! His death in DYRL is more dramatic and heroic and let's not forget he taught Hikaru everything he knows from planes to women. B))
  11. Who is Focker in DYRL? For someone who watched DYRL before watching the TV series, probably Focker is just the old, careless guy who is rude, stupid enough to get drunk before flying, got ambushed easily and died fighting some nobody.

Not the ace pilot, charming and witty, mentor and big brother we know. :(

BTW, I like the Max TV-1A, Max 1J and Max 1S very much. I do like his DYRL 1A and Queadluun-Rau too, just not as much. He is so cool.

Oh yeah for the TV series Fokker wins, but Hikky 1J is hot on it's heels, Max TV-1A probably scores very close as well.
  12. I agree with your impact theory!

My fondiness (word invented) of Focker started from the days of TV series, it's Focker for the #1 to me.

Max 1S number 2, and Hikaru the third.

Maybe I am just jealous...

It's not what looks more appealing, it's what the particular colour of Valk did in the movie and what impact it left on the viewer. ;)

Hikaru 1S wins hands down out of all the DYRL? "fighters" (not trainers, i love the VT-1 equally to the VF-1S Hikaru)

    Max 1S 2nd place,

Roy 1S third, then the 1A's (Hikaru, Max, Kakizaki....)

  13. I deserved to be flamed. :p

Who am I to wish against so many others?

And I want it quite badly too! I used to like the Focker 1S more, but from the Yamato photos, the red 1S seems to be more appealing...

The color really changes a lot of the perception. For the 1/48 series, I have the three 1S: yellow, red and blue. For some reason, the observed chunkiness is as follows: yellow -> red > blue. But of course, mighty Yamato has used the same mold, it's the color that makes me feel the blue is the chunkiest of them all.

So I wonder if this time, the red color has made the sleek 1/60 model a "boarder chest" feel.

I should have experiemented with my Hikaru 1A and Focker 1S to switch the heads...

  14. I hope it would be delayed in fact! (no flames please)

There are too many things to buy in December! I prefer to collect one piece at a time to "prolong the pleasure".

Two in a month would be great; you have 2 weeks to get a bit bored (just relatively) and then get a new one. Now that's a perfect world.

If everything comes out as scheduled in December, I would have 7 units to pay for!

I cannot choose to "wait till later" as Macross toys are not abundant (shop-wise); if you don't pick it up in the 1st month when it's released, you have to wait for the re-issue that may take months or years or forever.

Of course items can still be found on the web, but the price is much higher (yen exchange rate is like 30% lower in the local shops), and there is the shipping (which makes up 30% of the total cost too). I'd better buy it right away.

don't doubt... HOPE! do keep me posted if it will come out this dec.... i will move heaven and earth to get it from CT.
  15. I suggest you to look at some photos of both lines of products before making the decision.

Personally, I am a big fans of Yamato, because their products are general beautiful - they are expensive, but you get what you pay for. I just feel satisfied to look at them.

But again, if you are a nostalgic person, you may find the Bandai models appealing. You are free to make the call for whichever you like more!

Excellent piece of advice. And no, I'm slightly past the whole "Come on Red Ranger, can you jump the CANYON OF DEATH!??!" stage. I'm talking more along the lines of slightly regressing and "flying with it" while I make it do flips and stuff, slow motion like :p

So it sounds like I need to find a Yamato. And something relatively cheap for Christmas. And preferably a VF-1 or something that I'm familiar with (Macross F, SDF, Macross Plus the Movie)

*wonders if he's starting to sound really picky*

Beyond this, is it in bad taste to want to collect the 2002 reissue Bandais? I'm just a cheap guy, my mother and father taught me to shop for price and I taught myself the way of quality through some "accidents" (Note to self, Rogue Squadron III was NOT a smart idea Napalm). They just look cool and seem to be really strong for what I'm doing.

*guesses he's partial to Bandai for all the years he bought Power Rangers action figures*

*really starting to like MW already*

Again mate, thanks for the info. I haven't collected anything like this since the Megazord days.

  16. Just for more information; the shop owner, from whom I used to buy my Yamato toys, told me that Defender would probably be issued before X'mas, and M&M Queadlunn Ruas after Christmas. As yet, for the other "December releases", such as VF-0S, Tomahawk OD, Hikaru VF-1S, there's no news yet. He cannot place orders on these as of yet because the price aren't known.

So I doubt if the Hikaru 1S can be issued within 08. We'll see.

HLJ put up a Early Bird Pre-Order for Hikaru's Strike VF-1S last week. And it says the release date is December 2008, this month.

  17. Very nice! I still do not have space for display myself. <_<

How many of them are new members from your latest trip?

just wanted to share my "relatively newbie"/small but growing collection. ^_^

the space behind the revos is for the much anticipated Hikky VF-1S and VF-1D  . Still trying to figure out where to put the up'n'coming v.2 VF-0S .
