I agree with JsARCLIGHT. The death was necessary. When I firs read the Robotech books (my first exposure). I was conflicted whether it was Roy’s or Hikaru’s story. Hikaru could never be the main character as long as Roy was around. Roy had to be removed from the picture and what better way to do that than by tragedy, it forced Hikaru to grow up and be a main character. I do believe the situation in DYRL was better, but they were both good.
