Woohoo!!!  Finally got my LilDrakens - took over 2 months by Eco-SAL from NY (note to Canadians, Canada Post does not support tracking, so once it left Japan which only took 3 days there is no more tracking information for Eco SAL - it spent almost 2 months in Canada somewhere! - our postal system sucks!).  Never will I cheap out again on shipping - argh.  Yep slightly underwhelmed, might feel differently when I put it on the actual bird, but the drones are a bit bulky/fatter than I expected.  Like the RVF-25 drones better - designwise.

Yup. Canada Post historically sucks donkey balls. =) But you should be glad at least you received it in the end. I've had two shipments just disappear on me before. The shipments just leave USA, arrive in the Richmond BC sorting facility and it just disappears and never appears on my doorstep and I'm only in Vancouver!!

  2. Those pictures are great. I seriously think the Drakken 3 looks pretty amazing. I can't wait for the DX toy to be out but again it's going to be super expensive and hard to source.

  3. Ok maybe you long-time fans can help me out here. I seriously am not able to tell any differences between any of the VF-31 variants. Those close-up pictures of the different VF-31s all virtually look the same except for the colours. So that's all in plane mode.

However like other valkyries, is the only difference in the variants in their battroid heads (which we haven't really seen clearly at this point) ?

  4. Not to mention pulling back to in-between the tail fins, which is view you couldn't gain from a physical camera because the shot is above the YF-21. I had always assumed that the cameras and sensors were used to generate a virtual representation of the environment, not necessarily a direct video feed. The more camera and sensors you have to scan the environment the better. The sensors in the head could be more detailed/sensitive, and be used as the focal point/persepective for battroid.

That's what I thought too about multiple cameras and sensors. None of them are truly direct feeds but they all get fed into the onboard avionics which then amalgamate the images into the cockpit view to give you a full 360 degree look based on the pilots position. I think that was what was available in the VF-27 Lucifer.

According to one of the interviews Kawamori gave, he said the SV-262 Drakken III had a truly unique transformation scheme not previously seen on any macross valkyrie yet. I find that somewhat hard to believe given certain design and technical requirements on a plane and then in a robot (i.e. you need two legs). However the most I've been able to figure based on the plane mode and what we have seen so far is that in plane mode there is a single engine exhaust however the splits into two exhausts when you get into battroid mode and gerwalk modes. That perhaps is the "new truly unique" part that Kawamori is talking about? I do recall that there was some fan art once that hypothesised what a Boeing JSF-32 or F-35 would look like if it was a valkyrie and that too used the same 1 engine exhaust to 2 exhaust for legs concept.

  5. Thanks for answering this question. I too wanted to ask the same thing.

So I understand a little on the licensing for Macross, however which Macross license would the VF-5000G fall into? And hence what other valkyries could be produced if a company got that particular license?

  6. Ok so i did a quick search on Nippon Yasan for the YF-29 and i find two listings

    One for

    MACROSS F - DX CHOGOKIN YF-29 DURANDAL VALKYRIE (30TH ANNIVERSARY COLOR) = $258.14

    one for

    MACROSS F - DX CHOGOKIN YF-29 DURANDAL VALKYRIE (30TH ANNIVERSARY COLOR) (REISSUE) = $222.89

Given that they're almost identical, why the huge price discrepancy? Is the Re-issue going to get less stuff?

And the other thing is the pre-order says March2013 but it doesn't actually list when it will be released. Am i missing something here? Sorry this is my first time taking a look at Nippon Yasan so i'm just a bit confused.

If anyone could help me out, that would be much appreciated. Thanks

  7. Wow talk about shocking news but really not too surprised. Nowadays when we hear Yamato, the first thing we think of is Macross. I think that overall has hurt them. For example i never even knew Yamato made VM50 dolls at all. Whenever i saw the VM50s i always thought those were from Volks, so i guess as a company this makes sense for them.

Yes i too noticed that sudden rush of VF-19P sales from, HLJ. I guess HLJ didn't have to discount in the end. I've bought many Yamato Valks in the past and well, the've always been rather expensive.

Actually, does anyone know, those original Yamato 1/72ish Valkyries from Macross Plus ( you know the ones the originally started with), are those worth anything anymore? YF-19, YF-21, VF-11 etc?

  8. Received my first release 30th anniversery YF-29 yesterday from Nippon-Yassan.

Liking it much more than expected. Colour scheme looks really good. Just wish it had the skulls on the tail fins as well.

I know Nippon-Yassan has received some flak recently for their packing, but the packing on mine was fine. Sturdy enough shipping carton, with no damage and full of pink paper to protect the toy box from moving around inside the carton. Can't really ask for more.

One think I noticed is that the wing tabs seem to lock into the lower legs much more securely than my YF-29 Alto. One of my many pet peeves with the Alto version is that the locking between the lower legs and wings in fighter mode is not secure enough and the legs are always unlocking and droooping down. I'll have to compare the tabs on the two toys later and see if any improvements were made.

    Graham

Hey Graham, you're in Hong Kong and you were not able to buy the YF-29 in Hong Kong? I would think it would be at least somewhat available.

  9. Strange HLJ site seems to say this item is discontinued I thought they just released this in December maybe they are cutting back on their inventory so they don't have to do a Macross sale

Yeah i noticed that too. It went to discontinued status pretty fast. However at least it was available for order for a time unlike the Bandai YF-29 and VF-171 orders, those went into backordered status almost the moment they were posted for sale on HLJ, in fact i'm not even sure if they were ever available for order on HLJ. I've had zero luck trying to get the YF-29 and VF-171

I'm waiting for that one too, but I see Yamato cutting their numbers heavily. The 17D (standalone) and the super packs are sold out now (along with many products that where in back order) and discontinued at HLJ and NY. (17D and packs where in back order for some time a couple of weeks ago, I'm now thinking seriously on grabbing a 17D bundle before they sold out)

Grab the VF-17D in any way you can. As someone pointed out, for some reason the VF-17D is more popular that the 17S. Maybe because the 17S has a perceived larger noggin. Mine is on the way from HLJ, can't wait.

  10. The YF-29 is just amazing as a fighter plane and this updated one is awesome too. Too bad it's all sold out at HLJ where i normally buy from. Not sure about other retailers.

How's that Nippon Yasan? is it an actual store or is it some middleman? I did a quick search for YF-29 and their prices seem to be all over the place.

  11. Aargh just read and got caught up on the VF-17D news today. Delayed to december??? Damn, not awesome but my wallet does breathe a sigh of relief for this month and the next.

I already have something in my HLJ private warehouse and was waiting for the VF-17D to arrive before i ship it all out but i guess i should ship it out now since december would be way too long to wait.

  12. Man so HLJ has this for order now but the order page says "Order Stop"?

For the longest time i was trying to find out if this was a Tamashii web exclusive and couldn't find that info and i had been checking HLJ to see if it was available.

So what does this mean? i.e. i have to keep checking back every day to see if they will open it up for pre-orders?

  13. I was tempted to get the VF-19F but i already have a VF-19S, so 1 VF-19 should be good enough especially when the VF-17D w/ fastpacks is coming out in December. Got to save up for that particular one.

Sadly the Bandai VF-171, YF-29, VF-171EX all seem to be impossible to get. WHen i try to order them from HLJ, it's already "order-stop". i mean i couldn't have been that slow..... oh well.

  14. If i recall correctly air races were pretty popular back in the 30s before the war. But nowadays are there even air races anymore? I think Red Bull has some air race going but i don't know too much about it.

I think the best reference to air races was in that Disney movie The Rocketeer

  15. Well it's already marked as unavailable so better luck next time...

I'm glad i was able to pick up mine back in November last year in HongKong. But it was more of a consolation purchase since i was really after the YF-29

But now i have 2 VF-25S, the original and the v2. I almost feel like i wasted a bunch of money of the v1 VF-25S.

  16. Always love your pics, but when you put valks on that soft, fuzzy, white blanket it reminds me of a Playboy shoot. Throw down a few rose pedals and put the valks in more "suggestive" poses and you could have some serious mech porn going on.

Hahaha, that's a good one. So pardon my ignorance but other than the head and detail colour, the VF-17S and VF-1D are not different?

  17. Well i keep checking HLJ but so far no pre-orders. Aargh this year will be expensive for Macross.

    Just the basics

    VF-4G, VF-171, VF-17D, YF-29

And i already missed the pre-order for the YF-29! Aargh! Problem is Macross stuff is super hard to come by, they get sold out or pre-ordered out almost instantly.

  18. Consider me sold! I almost choked on my coffee when i first saw Graham's post about the VF-4. I've been waiting for these obscure valks for a long time. Hope they will do more. However being a web exclusive is kind of lousy but as someone pointed out, likely Yamato would jsut produce exactly to the number of orders. I guess it keeps their risk low. However isn't most of the risk in taking the R&D time to design and engineer this baby in the first place? Unless the Yamato engineers were doing this in their spare time.
