Words are lies insofar as they always fall short of signifying the things they aim to describe and often times cover the chasm between the thing and the word. If we are conscious of this, then we are at least true in our lies. If we are not conscious of it, then we lie even when we tell the truth.

Yet how does introducing myself do just that? What you are saying makes no sense...

As to the idioms - thank you for clearing up their meaning. However, please note that in doing so, you only prove my point - which is that I am very interested in literal translations in order to uncover the strangeness of a different language and learn a new way of thinking that has been covered up by words which I use in my language. The fact that I never would have concieved such idioms in english, or would have trouble deducing the meaning of such idioms were they presented in english merely demonstrates that english language/grammar have burdened me and made it impossible to see things differently.

But you still fail to understand what I\'m trying to say... you shouldn\'t be FORCED to pause a subtitled line and look something like that up, or to ponder about it. This stuff is meant for entertainment, not for literary analysis. You yourself may like it, but had the subtitle of said \"oh he\'s nothin\' but talk\" instead of \"oh he\'s nothing but a meowing cat that doesn\'t catch any rats\", then there wouldn\'t be a problem. English isn\'t to blame here, I\'m pointing out how idioms of another language correlate into that in English... and in those cases, literal is not the best way to go because they are rooted in their culture, their language, therefore something that everyone in English can understand is necessary.

As for hajimemashite meaning \"this is the first time\" - I think that is a very beautiful greeting.

Well there ya go... classic example number one that a literally translated idiom doesn't work -- you don't know what a bonito is.

"A meowing cat catches no rats" ---> makes perfect sense - he catches no rats because his meowing lets the rats know where he is so he looses the element of surprise. Apply this to humans and it could mean something like: If all you do is complain, you will never succeed.

No, sorry but your inference here is wrong. This means "to talk a good show" or "be all talk".

"Have an injury on ones' shin" (shady past) ---> agan makes perfect sense - it brings to mind bad little boys coming home to mom, swearing up and down that they were good, but the injuries on their shins show that they were fighting/playing roughly/doing something that got them dirty/injured/something they shouldn't have done.

Again, you are incorrect. This is referring to a past you are hiding, not something that "just" happened. There's no way around that one.

Trying to figure out what idioms means has nothing to do with language, but with the thought presented in the idiom. As soon as you know the literal translation, you can begin thinking about what it means.

No. All language is a falsification of the original. Any language is always a falsification of reality to some extent. Words supposedly signify things, but often times the words cover up the things they are trying to uncover for us.

A falsification of reality? Can I get the number of your pot dealer? Words cover up things only if you are lying, the fact that I'm explaining things doesn't mean I'm covering something up. If I say "Hi, my name is Deacon. Nice to meet you." exactly what am I falsifying by saying that?

How am I supposed to learn anything if I don't pose questions and arguments?

Seriously, I don't know how old you are or anything, but if you can take a even a years worth of the Japanese language, it'll help just a smidgen.

And just out of curiosity's sake, since "hajimemashite" is translated as "How do you do?" the literal translation would be: "This is the first time." You think that sounds natural in everyday conversation?

I prefer "raining even though the sun is out...just like a fox becoming a bride" to "raining even though the sun is out...just like a sun shower."

Fine, I'll pose for you another idiom, one that will make no sense whatsoever when translated into English.

「そんな小さな子にコンピュータを買い与えるなんて、猫に小判だ。」

Buying a computer for a small child like that is simply a waste.

Literal translation: Buying a computer for a small child like that is like gold coins to a cat.

Does that make sense in English? No! Do you understand that the idiom means "like casting pearls before swine"? Hell no! I could give you a whole slew of other idioms (entrusting a cat with a dried bonito, a meowing cat catches no rats, have an injury on one's shin-- which is an idiom for having a shady past), and you can try and figure out what they mean, but you can't. It's just that simple.

If you want things translated literally, this is how they would read:

僕は行くつもりだ。

Literal: I TOP NOM go intend COP. (I go intend.)

Actual: I intend to go.

TOP = topic marker

NOM = nominalizer

COP = copula

The same can be said for contextual situations. If I were to say 僕はうなぎだ。I'm saying (literally) "I am an eel." That's your literal translation. But, given the context of the situation it's more of "I've decided on eel" or "I want to order eel." The translation range is vast an infinite when the sentence is stand alone, but in your situation you want literal, so you'll get "I am an eel." which does not fit into a NORMAL conversation if you are watching something subbed.

Translation is always a lie - it always falsifies. My whole point is not to be afraid of this conclusion and not to aspire towards the safety of "a broad consensus" of "dubbed works" which forever close us from the problem we are discussing. Much better to have a thousand versions of an anime episode then just one.

I suggest rereading what I said earlier since you seemed to have glossed over it. But then if translation is a lie then if I said to you 「お前は相変わらずアホだし」, then it wouldn't mean "And you're just as retarded as always" then would it?

b) Please notice - if we are going to start talking about the extent to which a translation (literal or otherwise) is a falsification of the original language - that the the original language itself is also a falsification of the thing.

See this is quite interesting... there is no such thing as what you just said. Literal translation is just wrong, plain and simple. I'll give you a perfect example: idioms. In your world of literal translations, Japanese idioms simply would not make sense whatsoever in English when translated literally. I'll cite an example:

「晴れているのに雨が・・・まるで狐の嫁入りだね。」

Raining even though the sun is out... just like a sun shower.

狐の嫁入り literally means "a fox becomes a bride". So your version of a "beautiful literal translation" would be something like... "Raining even though the sun is out... just like a fox becoming a bride." Hah, I think not. I suppose quite a few people are "confused" by the act of translation, so I'll clarify some things based on a recent presentation I did:

What is translation? Translation consists of producing in the target language, the closest natural equivalent of the source language meaning. First with respect to the meaning and second with respect to style. Translating is more than just replacing a word with its equivalent in another language: sentences and ideas must be manipulated to flow with the same coherence as those in the original so that the translation reads as though it originated in the target language. Some subjects may be more difficult than others to translate because words or passages may have multiple meanings that make several translations possible, this is natural. The success of a translation is nearly always dependent on the smallest words: prepositions, articles. However, nouns are also essential. Anyone can translate nouns, but not necessarily successfully. Nonetheless, translation creates a specific kind of distance: the reader never forgets that what is being read is a translation.

A common misconception that many people have is that translators very rarely “hear” or “are in tune” with their translation. A translator senses the original from the outside, but can never truly become one with it like the author had. This is mainly seen with poetry. A translator, as someone said, is “outside the language forest of the source, calling in.” Nonetheless, the translator can be and must be on the inside of his or her translation, and through time as a result, may begin to hear certain things in the original that were not readily perceived when they first started.

Fidelity and transparency are two qualities that have been regarded as ideals to be striven for in translation, particularly literary translation. These two ideals are often at odds. Fidelity refers to the extent that a translation accurately portrays the meaning of the source language. This also means that it does not add to nor subtract from it, does not intensify or weaken any part of it nor does it distort it. Transparency pertains to the extent to which a translation appears to a native speaker of the target language to have originally been written in that language, and conforms to the language's grammatical, syntactic and idiomatic conventions. A translation that meets the first criterion is said to be a "faithful translation"; a translation that meets the second criterion, an "idiomatic translation." The two qualities are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

The first thing to realize is that translators have their own way that they approach translations and they each bring with them a completely different set of experiences and ideas which will affect their translation in the end. But it's important to realize that just because translators will translate things differently does not necessarily make one more "right" or more "wrong" than any other translation. Once translators recognize that they have their own voice, they need to try and minimize the effect that voice has on the finished product. They shouldn't sacrifice the integrity of the translation just because their voice comes through in the translation. Instead they should use their experiences to help them come up with the best translation possible.

I highly recommend the book "Mouse or Rat? Translation as Negotiation" by Umberto Eco. That will clear up a lot of your misconceptions.

A show is much more than just a story. It's the sum of it's parts. The music is part of what makes a scene a scene. It wouldn't be as bad if the music weren't the focus of the scene, but in this case it was. I've seen the altered episode. It may be no biggie to you, but to a fan like me, it pulled me out of the show.

I agree that music is a major portion of the show, however it isn't the end all. If you are a true fan of the series, then you shouldn't have any problem overlooking this "flaw" knowing what is true. Otherwise, it just goes to show how shallow you are. It's all about what YOU want. Well, you don't always GET what YOU want. Welcome to the real world.

That's never a good thing. We're also not saying that it's life shattering, but is it so wrong to voice dissatifaction over something important to you? You once argued that there are worse things. Yes there are.

Still, it's a cartoon. You all make it sound like something apocalyptic will come about if it isn't changed. You spent a piddly $20 on it. It's hardly worth the fanfare and torches. You do realize that while consumers dictate a corporations direction, they don't have to bend into the will of their demands. People are still going to buy it even if people "try" a boycott. We're not even boycotting the release for crying out loud. We're not going to other boards saying, "Don't buy it, it's flawed". We're just spreading the word that Bandai covered up, and organizing some feedback campaign so Bandai will know to think twice in the future. If you look through the thread, this is the first time anything negative about the release came up. No one even coplained about the lack of the unmatted episode 6, a big feature on the R2. Quite simply, aside from this, we were all looking forward to it, and it looked like it was to be exactly what we wanted. One can't help but feel disappointment when perfection was less than a month away (a week to pre-orderers.) Heck, I'm buying it, if only for the booklet and other extras (and completest value). I' still glad I no longer have to tell people it's not available when they tell me they've never heard of it. I just wish they haven't messed with it.

Okay, wait... what? Bandai is "covering" things up now? What are they, the Bush administration? Things change from a con announcement to when something is released. Anime is never perfect. If the song had been in place, someone would have complained about the subbing style, or not having a certain extra, or how something was said in the dub. Seriously, Bandai won't care what you say. It's a quick series that they are releasing. If it were longer, perhaps, but otherwise, your fates are sealed. Bandai won't think twice, it's wishful thinking. And you said it yourself... it's a nuance, which means they won't care about it.

Watch, Episode 6 will change on the American release and Japan will be in an uproar. Oh I can see it all happening now...

Judging by what you've said, you should ignore yourself then =). Seriously, you are one of the fans that clearly complains and moans about every little thing with an anime release. They could very well not release the series here at all, then you'd have to resort to the wonderful world of innacurate fansubs and the like. It's a song. It isn't the end of the world. It has no bearing on the actual storyline, so what gives?

Actually, your are quite wrong there. When Evangelion was originally released on DVD, they screwed a lot of things up by removing the Japanese text from signs and such, and implementing their own captions therefore altering the original artwork. They also did this to the original release of Nadessico. There was such a roar from the fan base as to what had been done that ADV Films was forced to rework EVA's first disc as well as all of Nadessico and re-release them. Letters do work as a way of letting companies know what their customers are thinking. They can actually make or break a company, depending on how they are implemented.

I saw EVA a while back, but I really couldn't stand the show, so I never bought it. Then again, this was back in the day, so... yeah with ADV still being "young", I'd say they didn't want to cave early on. I doubt they'd do that again now. In addition, one thing that people may have overlooked is that this change was more than likely DICTATED from Japan. It's happened with Gundam, and it sure as heck has happened with other anime. They make changes to the American release thinking that they will do better, when sometimes they don't. Sure, Bandai rereleased Zeta Gundam with corrected subs, but the 10ep DVD pack was planned anyways. They make changes they think are applicable. There is no written rule that says we have to have everything carry over here into America.

Do you SERIOUSLY think they are going to care? The changes are in place and nothing will rectify it. Suck it up as a fan and deal with it. You should be glad that this is even being released. Writing a letter isn't going to make a difference because I can tell you that they will laugh at it and put it in the circular file...

There are plenty of anime releases that go off without a hitch and without complaint. The shelf in my living room is full of them. Totally unedited, uncut series that generated no fan backlash. These releases are unedited and uncut because because that's what anime fans want and we get pissed and cancel preorders when original animes are messed with. If we listened to you, we'd still have stuff like Robotech and Macron 1 over here.

Actually, there are probably very FEW, if any at all, that are released here perfectly. Perfection is impossible. Granted, I don't see the who hubbub about what is going on here, but people need to seriously lay off. You can't have an EXACT copy of something that once was anyways. Times change, ideas change, stories change and people just need to live up to it. Should we all start preparing for the Apocalypse when the Transformers movie comes out? :-/

Um, because if they don't release quality products, less people will buy them?

Zeta Gundam didn't live up to the quality that most people expected, yet according to video scan results (from what I recall having a rep tell me), they still managed to sell over 45,000 copies of the boxed set. I don't think that is too shabby of a number now is it?

So, for an anime company, an A level release, met with universal acclaim and high sales and a few minor gripes, is equivalent to an F level release with mediocre sales and and huge fan backlash.

Please reread what he said. He said that it doesn't matter whether it is a high-quality release or the scum of all releases, there will always be something in it that fans will complain about. Anything released, regardless of what is included or excluded will always be met with criticism. If you people are really that concerned with what is in this and what isn't, then buy the original from Japan and watch in its "untainted" form.

A NOTICE TO THE INDIVIDUAL WHO STOLE OUR RELEASE

I would appreciate it if you had the decency to credit the person and the team that has taken the time to translate the manga into English for the fans. I noticed that there was a thread on a certain chinese forum, and I decided to see what was in it... little did I know that there would be backstabbing individuals who would pass off other people's work as their own... That's just low, I don't care how you look at it. I've had work taken in the past and passed off, but this was just vile... the fact that you edited out the translation text file that contained notes on the release and missed translations was also very harsh.

As a result, you have now forced me to watermark all of the pages when it comes to releasing more. However, if you simply make it clear in your thread post who translated it (the two individuals in the text file), the site that it was from (Zeonic-Corps.net) and a small apology, I will be willing to over look this. It's things like this that make me so angry and want to discontinue translations. If you do not do as I have asked, I will speak with the administration of those forums, and will make sure that the members of the forums there are aware of what you have done.

Well, here we are. The first major release, and hopefully one of many more to come. When I first read about a new Astray manga appearing, my ears perked up, and I was adament about releasing a translated version of it no matter what the cost. So, basically my quest for Gundam ACE started all over again... however, I was able to find an english website that carried it! So, I eagerly ordered it (although it was a month behind the actual release) and tore it apart to scan it in.

Bah... anyways, enough of the nonsense... Zeonic-Corps is going to be committed to translating Gundam manga and novels (with the occassional radio drama too perhaps) all by fans, for the fans. These scanlations shall remain up until the event that TokyoPop (or another manga distributor) picks them up. Please note that the 100% accuracy of the translation isn't guaranteed. This is after all a fan-translation, so while we try our very best, we will still be off in some instances. If you have a major complaint about that, please see me.

The beginning of Gundam ACE offers us a nice little packaging of sorts for the newest Gundam show, SEED DESTINY. Following several pages with characters (the standard art that we see in the op), their voice actor listings, and a brief description, we are treated to a story guide (PHASE-01 to PHASE-07) and an interview with two stars of the show. The two actors are Kenichi Suzumura (Shinn Asuka) and Maaya Sakamoto (Lunamaria Hawke). Basically it comments on the series itself and opinions from the seiyuu's and what not. I'll scan it when I have the time.

This installment takes place right after the death of Zeon Daikun, and throws us right into the mix with the assassination of Saslo Zabi. Dozle escapes the bombing, and as you can see, he's clearly peeved and wants to act. The story goes on, and the public is made to think that the Earth Federation is the main faction behind all of this (Daikun's death) and that Jimba Ral and his family assassinated Saslo. Ultimately, Degwin, Kishiria, and Ramba all make their own moves. The Munzo colony is in complete disarray as citizens riot and set fire to many things. The Daikun family is allowed to leave as per Degwin a la Gihren, Ramba Ral (who has been in hiding) asks Hamon to help his father escape (Hamon is like a BEAUTY in this manga), and as such, Kishiria goes to meet with young Casval. She then handcuffs him! KINKY! =D

Although this is an alternative take on the UC era show, we get to see Jimba Ral, and how he's rather paranoid and what not about the recent turn of events. I hope I can backtrack to previous chapters! =D

GUNDAM SEED DESTINY ASTRAY

In this installment, we are introduced to Bernadette Leroux, a coordinator and journalist. Coincidentally, both her and Jess have the opportunity to interview legendary ace Alliance pilot EDWARD HARRELSON. Unfortunately, upon meeting the pilot, they are rather disappointed because he doesn't appear to be "ace pilot" material. As the interview begins to wind down, the base has received word that 3 Raider Gundams are on their way to attack Edward. So, he hops into the Sword Calamity and attacks. Jess, in the Gundam Astray Out Frame, takes some great shots of the action. As such, Bernadette airs her story, and Jess gets a little urked that it wasn't all what he had planned it to be. As the story concludes, we seen an Alliance commander briefing it's three remaining ace pilots, Morgan Chevalier (Moonlight Mad Dog), Jane Houston (White Whale) and Lena Imelia (Sakura Burst) to finish him off.
