1. I haven't played it in a while so I forgot about that length problem. Just saw that "Blues" tag myself when I e-mailed it you. The length isn't really a problem, on my player it just hits 4:28 then just ends, ending time says 5:35 the extra minute never plays.

One comment so as not to confuse people, the whole song is there. :)

Yes, the whole song is there. And I think my Winamp was incorrect with the 5:35 length. I think the 4:28 is actually correct.

God bless you guys! Thank you for both sending and hosting that song!

  2. I thought the Manga movie dubs weren't half bad. At least the casting was decent, unlike all the other Patlabor dubs(squeeky voice Noa and so on).

The OAV's have been subbed for some time by US Manga. I've never had a problem with them.

    361562

Were both OVA series done by US Manga. I saw one that may be an OVA set but it the text wan't specific.

  3. To this day I still think that Manga's dub of the first Patlabor movie is one of the best dubs ever. Overall, it's just very well done.

    361426

Whoops! I screwed up there. I meant decently subtitled (fair to decent translation).

The movies were excellently translated (Spatula I agree. Patlabor II is an anime masterpiece) but I'm looking for the OVA's not the movies or the television series. Someone has to have a decently subtitled version of those.

  4. Huh? Well, in terms of the first and second movies, Bandai Entertainment's re-releasing them remastered and whatnot. Good thing I didn't touch the old Manga Ent. release.

As for the OVAs, Central Park Media has released all of them, as well as the TV series.

    361270

Saw the television series there but not the OVA's.

  5. Mel Gibson is a much better filmmaker when he just directs versus acting and directing.

Personally I think each and every movie he has acted in since Braveheart is just his way of trying to recapture the Braveheart magic. But this isn't much different from Al Pacino going over the top again and again since it won him an Oscar in Scent Of A Woman. ( Hooooo Ahhhhh) I think nothing curses these actors more than actually winning an Oscar.

I generally don't mind Gibson's religious/political views since they don't change his storytelling. Now it might influence which story he ends up telling, but I'll give him credit for knowing how to show compelling drama and artistic flair in his movies. And honestly, if you listen to Spike Lee rant, hes way way more over the top and Anti Semetic than Gibson will ever be. But unlike Lee, Gibson can't hide behind being black to shield his racist oddball views.

Gibson just committed the unforgivable Hollywood sin of pissing off one of the Holy Trinity Of Marketed Martyrdom ( homosexuals, African Americans and Jews) If he pissed on rich white men, old people, the disabled or marginalized Asian Americans, then he would be a non story.

    354348

Heh. I agree with you that Spike Lee is a racist hypocrite. On the other hand I'm black and haven't been offended by anything Gibson has put out yet. What are you referring to in that last part of your post. People will cry bloody murder over a film that involves any ethnic or religios group whether the story is right (most of the) or wrong. Hell even if the flick doesn't invole some hot topic someone's gonna bitch. Back when SW Episode I came out some cheezballs accused G. Lucas of offending blacks and taking a stab at the chinese becuause Jar Jar's (Forgive me for mentioning the name) speach pattern and the Trade Federation was some sinister metaphor for the chinese. Oh yeah the Trade Fed guys seemed to talk with chinese accented english too! Pure B.S. They weren't mad at the fact that he pissed the new movie away but they found plenty of time to devine some strange racial and political B.S. out of a sci-fi movie geared largely towards kids.

  6. Weak prequels or not, I saw it recentley and I still like it especailly the scenes with Palptine/Sidious.

    342701

Yup. Ian McDirmid solidified this flick (it's a criminal act to have cut his other scene). Ewan was excellent as well. Especially when he confronts Vader after he had strangled Padme.

Despite all the sabre fights this movie had only one, the Windu/Sidious fight had any real passion in my opinion. Sure the Vader/Obi-Wan fight had a lot of flash and bang it was only toward the end where it seemed to draw you in. Mace and Sidious despite the relative slow pace brevity of their duel had some supense. Those two had a lethal chemestry that made the fight all the more interesting.

  7. Amidala was 14. Anakin was 8. You'd be amazed how many couples you can meet where the woman's age exceeds the man's by several years.

If Anakin was some dark, brooding character it would have been more obvious to the Jedi that he was evil. The dark side of the force is the passionate side of the force, where intense, inward thinking emotions give you strength. You see Anakin slowly over the course of the movies shift from being a compassionate force sensitive "chosen one," thinking of helping others all the way to the /vaderno. I like how George had Hayden play Anakin in both Episode II and III, especially considering that he is Luke Skywalker's father someone famous for being a "whiner."

Also, about the loose ends, iirc Lucas said for years it would be the one where all the mysteries are solved.

Anyway, that's how I feel about 'em. I'll have to pick up Episode I on DVD now to complete my collection. I don't think I like any SW enough to get much more than what's already been released (As far as DVDs go) but who knows, maybe the rumored television show will be worth watching. :)

    342711

I thought she was around twenty. Makes a little more sense.

  8. The general comments from people I know who saw it is that it seemed like Lucas did as little as possible in the first two movies, then tried to jam pack the third one with all the loose ends.

Other than the Podrace, not sure if Phantom Menace was all that necessary. Would have been nice to see Anakin start the series much older and then show a gradual shift to the dark side of the Force.

Years ago, Frank Darabont (Shawshank) was interviewed and he said he discussed doing some writing for the prequels with Lucas. And I wish that had happened. Even drag Lawrence Kasdan out of retirement. The writing for the prequels was pretty bad in spots. Particuarly the strange explanation that the Jedi order was based on a genetic condition.  Also outside of MacGregor and Neeson, the rest of the cast was pretty bland. I know Wes Bentley ( the camera psycho kid from American Beauty) was up for the role of Anakin, I could have seen him being the kind of brooding creepy guy that would end up as Vader.

While I don't think its a completely fair comparison, I think TV Smallville got the falling from grace effect much better than Star Wars did, albeit on a much smaller scale. Young Lex Luthor on the show is a guy who is flawed, but you can see there is basic good in him. But slowly his choices, many motivated by his parenting or lack of it, led to his fall from what was good and decent. Thats where I think the prequels really missed the mark, audiences weren't given alot of reason to care about the Anakin character, to see the kind of horrors that shaped his way of thinking and to see more insight into the insidious father/son dynamic with Palpatine. Now that might have been a really interesting look at the character, having both Obi Wan and the Emperor in a tug of war to see which would win out as the 'father' figure. Then again if it was up to me, I'd make Amidala as Obi Wans wife, now that would have been some really dark stuff. Imagine Obi Wan swearing to look after Luke and Leia, knowing full well they are the seed of his cheating wife.

I enjoyed alot about the new trilogy, I just feel like Lucas took the 'tragic' aspects out of a series meant to be a tragedy.

    341498

Padme and Obi-Wan would have made sense. Perhaps thats why it didn't happen. I mean Padme was in her early twenties when she met child Anakin and 12 or 14 years later she's still single, good looking, hasn't aged a day since EP I and has the hots for this young idiot over a wiser Obi Wan who is closer to her own age. I think a Macrosseque love triangle would have worked as well.

  9. Over the years, I've heard a lot of complaining about the PT, but I think a lot of that is that the OT has been placed on this pedastal, not so much that it's inherantly better.  At work, to promote Star Wars Battlefront II, we put a New Hope and Return of the Jedi in our TV towers.  From inside the store, we could hear but not see the films.  I can safely say that the dialogue and acting is most definately as bad in those films as any of the prequel trilogy.

Well I'm not exactly sure comparing the dialogue tracks between the old and new movies is exactly a good way to compare movies, since both and meant to be watched and acting is as much about facial expressions and body language as it is about annunciating lines from a script.

At any rate, my experience has been the exact opposite... I'd rewatched the trilogy a little bit ago to make sure that it wasn't just nostalgia that made me think the originals much better movies. It wasn't. The dialogue, while campy in a few places, was delivered in a much more compelling, convincing, and entertaining manner (then again the OT had the benefit of Ford's ad-libbing). The writing, while not academy award stuff, was simply tighter and better. It wasn't that much longer after that I saw Sith, and although I enjoyed it as Star Wars themed fluff, I ended up groaning and rolling my eyes in more places than I cared to. The two shouldn't produce such different reactions from me when they're see so close together and in context of each other.

I'd also shown A New Hope to a friend who actually hadn't seen most of the OT before and even he could see the differences and why I might enjoy one more than the other. The actual differences between the PT and the OT isn't illusion or nostalgia. Nostalgia and familiarity do make us react more strongly when we spot those differences... but there have been too many reasonable critiques and too many well-argued comparisions of the two films for the differences to be explained away glibly as being just a figment of our imaginations.

I concur. While I do enjoy the prequels the kiddyfication of the first three episodes greatly reduces movies that (with better direction) could have equalled or bettered their predecessors. The younglings bit I can get over. The lame dialogue is livable too(hey it's Star Wars) but battle droids making smart alleck comments when Greivous (funny how he was more intimidating in the clone wars series) snatches the sabers, or screaming in terror as two Jedi slaughter them, and R2 roasting two super battle droids (mercifully ending their tinny kiddy voices) these items served to weaken an already badly directed film which had the potential to be the best of all six.

  10. If he dosen't want'em I'll take'em! How much?

Yes, they are the original Japanese version of the CMS 1. I bought the full CMS Series 1 box set and I am keeping the colored hair versions, so instead of parting with it on eBay I rather pass it on to a MW member. Here's photos of the set and I also have the big ol' blue box the entire set came with if you want it as well. I'll PM you details.

    More photos added.

  11. As much as people (myself included) wanted to see Anakin prove himself as "the best starpilot in the galaxy" Aayla "blue chick" getting a better death scene and the Jedi posse enjoying a longer fight against Palpatine this would require a movie significantly longer than 2 1/2 hours. That wasn't gonna happen (unfortunately). How many of you would sit still for a three hour flick? Don't forget it's made with the kiddies in mind (a 2 1/2 hour commercial if you will). Hell if the movies good enough I'll sit for 4 but hopefully the deleted scenes will be worked into the full length DVD release.

  12. And I think the issue people had with his death, wasn't the Sarlacc - but the fact that a wild shot from a blinded Han Solo sent him to his relatively unimportant doom.

The slapstick in Jedi was the problem in general. The slapstick being used to kill a very dangerous (and cool looking) villain was even worse. And, then, the Sarlaac burped.

As Irvin Kirshner said about Empire: "I knew we had to have humor, but not gags." That fell by the wayside in Jedi. And Fett's death epitomizes it.

    'Nuff said.

    Amen.

  13. Just got to watch the 7 min trailer posted a few pages back. WOW!!

Does anyone know what music they used for the trailer? Was that the episode III sountrack? It was wonderful.

    Chris

All cuts from ESB. J. Williams finest Star Wars work. Based upon the clips I've heard from Episode III I don't think the soundtrack will be nearly as good. :(

  14. Hmm.. personally, I think the balance of the force thing has a lot to do with the way it is used, and not so much good and bad.. more like passive and active... sure, the force is powerful, can burn things up, lift things, choke people, shoot lightning... but it doesn't have to. Tim Zahn I think put this REALLY well in his Spectre of the Past/Vision of the Future books.. It's not a big spoiler for those books if you haven't read them, but Luke realized sometime during those books that the force can work two ways.. either you control it, or it guides you. Luke had been using the force for various random tasks in everyday life to make things easier, ie, lifting R2 out of his ship, floating drinks to people, etc.. not anything that would lead to the dark-side, but still really pointless stuff. But he also realized that he was rarely getting any sort of guidance on what to do from it. It wasn't until that he kind of laid back, and cut back on his usage of the force that he was able to sense what was going on in the universe (past present and future), and what he should be doing. It's like he was using up his force-quota on meaningless junk, and not for what was needed.

So, it's like you can use the force, good or evil, in two ways.. I'll just call them passive and active modes. Palpy lives in passive evil, planning ahead with the force, only pulling out his powers for special occasions. Vader's more active evil, choking people and generally using his powers whenever he feels like it. Luke was a good guy, but still uses his powers actively, ie the double torpedo hole-in-one and the lightsaber in the ice. Then, at the top of the heap is Yoda. He almost never uses his powers for anything except wisdom and foresight, and only fights when threatened. He only lifted Luke's X-Wing to teach him a lesson.

If we want to hold up Yoda as the epitomy of force-wisdom, then ideally, you would use the force ONLY for foresight. The actual usage of the force for telekinesis, strength, healing, etc should be like a backup plan, since, if you were really in-tune with the force, and knew how things would turn out, you would be able to plan ahead, and not have to use it at all physically.

So, the ideal setup is to use the force for guidance and knowledge, and only turn to it's actual physical power when it's unavoidable. It's like the universe is in balance when the force isn't being used selfishly to change the way the universe is spinning.

That being said, the force would probably be seriously out of "balance" as long as Palpy's in power. You've got a serious force-psycho ruling the universe, using the force to bend events and people to his will. If we define "balance" as having the universe running without being unnecessarily influenced by the force, then Palpatine was tipping the scale on its side. In that light, the prophecy was true. Anakin DID bring balance to the force when he killed him.

Note, I have no literature to back up what I'm saying, this is just coming out of novels I've read that do appear to agree with the movies.

    Very well spoken.

  15. I'm looking for the Gaogaigar Renais (Rune) figure by Yujin. The one in the skirt holding the volleyball if anyone is familliar with it. Can' seem to find one on evilbay. Thanks.
