Not to undermine his other cinematic works, but, like most Westerners, Chiba-san will always be known to me as Hattori Hanzo, swordsmith unparalleled from Kill Bill, my favorite Tarentino film. To be honest, I had no idea who he was when I first saw the movie, as I've not watched much in the way of Japanese cinema. But even in the brevity of his appearances, there was something genuinely likeable about him, and yet believable as this incredible swordsmith. Love the scene where he throws the knife back into its holder in the kitchen. Real or faked, I don't know, but given his many black belts in as many disciplines and lifetime of martial arts training, I'm betting real.

RIP, good sir.
