If Michael Bay was announced as a new director for a SDFM live-action movie.

That's about the worst case scenario... Macross in the hands of a director who doesn't understand subtlety, pacing, nuance, or character-based drama.

Transformers worked out for Bay because, true to the source material, it was a barely-there excuse plot for giant robots to smash each other to pieces while dispensing one liners in an action figure-friendly environment.

He's not a man you hire to direct a movie with an actual story.  He's the guy you hire if you want to film Things Blowing Up Part XIV.

I had to go back through his movies and was expecting my answer to be "Hell No".  He did direct Pearl Harbor and the romantic subplot in that was actually pretty good (and Kate Beckinsale) even though as anything approaching history it was a mess.  So my answer goes to "I'd actually look at reviews before shooting it down".

I wouldn't be excited or worried, I'd simply avoid the movie and ignore its existence.

From 30 different angles too!

Would Roland Emmerich be a better option?

I would suggest Director Alejandro G. Inarritu (The Revenant & Birdman) & Ronald D Moore as executive producer (Star Trek TNG & Battlestar Galactica).

You would have yourself as serious & honest of a Macross film possible with those two. Both would look at the source material (probably chat it up with Kawamori) and agree that overall that's what the film should look and feel like.

Roland Emmerich is an ok director, MIDWAY wasn't bad... then again anything is better than Pearl Harbor.

Maybe suggest a director who doesn't have nearly as many Razzie nominations as all other awards and award nominations combined?

"A better option than Michael Bay" is a bar set so low it's a trip hazard in Satan's sub-basement.

Richard Lester would be better than Michael Bay at the rate things are going...

I would expect something that was flashy and without much substance, with the focus on action and 'splosions and 'hero' shots and Minmay running in a halter top (in slow-mow.) Using Transformers as the example, it would make money, but resemble little of the source material, inspiring no desire to see what happens in a sequel - unless it was seen for free on TV. And then only while channel-surfing.

So, no.

In between infomercials, on Cartoon Network no less.

Lol, I didn't think that RT comic would come back and haunt us, yet there it is.

Michael Bay up top compared to what it's supposed to look like.

Yeah, I'd be concerned about the story somewhat, but I'd be more concerned with what a Vf-1 would look like under his rule.

put Michael Bay in charge of a Robotech movie, and I'd watch the hell out of it!

🤮

so don't let him produce, or have anyhting to do with production design.
Something along the lines of: "Michael, I want you to shoot badass action scenes, low-swooping telephotos left and right, and explosions out the wazoo, everything else is handled"

then when he's done, we can shoot [or re-shoot] all the non-action scenes with a director who knows how to do that...

... Are you telling me you don't want to see the epic Zentraedi Vs Supervision Army fleet action that ended with a nearly destroyed SA Gunship emergency-jumping away then smashing into South Ataria Island?

Sounds like a hell of an opening sequence.

That sequence sounds fine... just give me a competent director.

🤮

I don't want to be the one who defends Bay for a Macross movie, but if we are gonna talk about the horrible designs for the Transformers' movies, Hasbro is the one to blame, because is who managed them, not Bay.

I don't even understand why this is a question anyone would ask.

Some folks... still aren't clear on the narrative and thematic differences between between authentic Macross and what we'll call "the Macross [they] have at home". <_<

Authentic Macross isn't a gritty, action-packed, Things Blowing Up war series.  It's a love story and character drama set against the backdrop of a space war.  Some things do blow up, but it's a secondary concern to what's going on between the characters.

You hire Michael Bay if you want to make a mindless action movie full of Things Blowing Up.  He's no good for compelling character drama.  It's like hiring a coked-up Gary Busey to be maître d' at your fancy restaurant.  He's perfectly capable of showing up for work, but he's fundamentally incapable of producing the desired result.

The Macross would probably dance in tune with Lynn Minmay's (obviously the names need Americanisation) R&B song, behaving like some stereotypical African American rap dude showing off his big guns while thrusting his crotch. The Valkyries would look like horrifically mutated chimps in Battroid mode, set off HUGE EXPLOSIONS every five seconds, and talk back to their pilots. The Zentradi would all be rewritten as one-dimensional cartoon villains who get a send off in the most violent fashion possible because they would turn out to be androids that can be ripped apart with no consequences. The episode "Pineapple Salad" would also be incorporated into the movie, with the salad in question replaced by a Big Mac and Roy recharacterised as some standard B-movie action hero who chases skirt in the most misogynistic way possible.

The resulting movie would be praised for its awesome looking CGI scenery porn, be hugely popular with the common people, score really badly in reviews by movie critics, and induce suicidal thoughts in both Macross and Robotech fans alike.

Lol, there have been posts about who you would cast if Macross was made into a live action film.....

Wonder how it would look if Michael Bay did it......

Post your worst case scenarios here, lol!

That part isn't entirely inaccurate though to be perfectly honest.

Can any of us even hope to rival the nearly Lovecraftian horror that @Einherjar keeps reminding us already exists?

It'd be almost exactly like that, except everything would be on fire or exploding.

Well, he is a massive walking American stereotype after all...

Thinking on this (not too hard I assure you), Bay wouldn't be good for an SDFM but... what about M7? It has the rock music, a dense male lead and if we go for Barsara on the battlefield, lots of explosions. Plus his interactions with Sivil seem right up Bay's alley for female roles.

Just need some passable writing to make sure Mylene's character isn't gutted.
