Has the displeasure of handling a Toynami Beta again last night. Had been a while since I had taken one of mine out and tried to do anything with it.

Other than the chest, shoulders and arms -- this product is a fail.

MUST- HAVES:

• Locking mechanism for hips so they do not slide ( out, and in-and-out! ) constantly to their extended position

• Hip joints themselves are too floppy - so the combo of the floppy and the sliding (jokes inserted here) is horrible - just terrible - worst part of this toy

• Simple knee twist please - so that a proper a-stance can be achieved. Is that so hard? A twisting joint??

• Feet / toes need a twisting joint as well, so when a-stance is achieved they can be turned to touch the ground better

• The whole waist area SUCKS - its totally loose and needs a LOCKING pin or click to hold it in place in soldier mode - then unlock to change to bomber - second worst thing about it

• The cockpit joint BLOWS - does not stay up at all in bomber mode - I took the cockpit off last night to discover what Toynami thought would be a good hinge for that - : ( nice engineering there

• Chest cover that STORES RIGHT BEHIND the HUGE cockpit GAP in bomber mode - this would have locked the cockpit firmly in place in bomber, then when switching to soldier that piece goes over those big ugly fried egg eyes

AND this is all with a Beta that has been opened, transformed a few times and displayed - ZERO actual play or wear

The arms are pretty awesome though -- sheesh -- wish this could have been carried through the whole piece . . .

I'm just swearing off ALL TOYNAMI products unless it's a repackage like the Beagle Mospeada. The Beta and the Golion Voltron were toys I considered safe. My Voltron is crumbling though. Parts shear off just by touching it. The Beta I got rid of due to not having a decent Alpha to pair it with. Sold it it LSB for retail. But I also hated the 80s aesthetics... it's clearly bitten off the Lansay Tlead and the lack of articulation as you mentioned makes it feel so outdated. It's a sad day when you actually start to prefer resin's quality to actual plastic toys.

seriously? i have a red beta from around a few months after the release date. going by memory, all the joints are tight as good. nice and clicky etc.

I know it's got its flaws, but I'm still quite happy with the Big Burly Beta. Yeah, the hips easily slide outward. Yes, it's a bit gappy in solo bomber mode. And I would have loved for them to have added the pop-out shoulder missiles.

But it's got ratchet joints galore. It's got a decent A-stance in battloid mode. And it's a fun piece to pose.

If we're talking about a wider, splayed out A-stance in gerwalk mode, I could understand the benefit of having twisting knee joints.

But as is, it's got a decent enough amount of articulation to get some fun poses out of it.

And. . . . dogs are far superior to cats. :p

Now that Aoshima and CMs both took a stab at making a Beta, I really think another company could make an excellent Beta toy and learn from what they did. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure we've seen our last Beta toy... ever. I'm still pissed at CMs. They were probably the only toy company that knew they were going to make the Tread from the get-go and they did NOTHING to make it compatible with the Legioss toy they were building simultaneously. Seriously.. if ever a Legioss/Tread toy should have had the greatest linking mechanism ever that was it... and they made it have the worst linking mechanism ever. WTF?

Fully agree here. Their Legioss-Tread could have been perfect but they just left it half way. No locking ANYWHERE, weird leg joints and the most half assed connection you could imagine. Considering their slacking, CM's lasted more than it deserved.

my beagle is coming. i will be able to join the party late.

the anime says Tlead when Stick/Jim is reading the operation manual but that's a typo correct? anyways, all these recent projects are pretty cool.

Old notes for the show (like the IMAI files) said TLEAD is suppose to stand for something like "Transport Legioss Escort Armored Deadnaught" because that's what it is in a way.

Thanks, so Tread was a later official correction adapted by toy companies?

totally agree. personally i wish somoene would do them over as well..and make em bigger. the legioss in current scale of 1/55-1/48 (depending hwo you believe) is TINY. i don't think we need something like the original gakken in size but something like the 1/60 valks in size (i'm not sure what scale that puts them at...somehwere in the mid to upper 30s i guess) would be great. the beta/tlead wouldn't be THAT huge either. i wish we had 3P anime toys like TF fans do..unfortunately i doubt there is much of a mospeada or robotech following in china/SE asia.

I believe the old Gakken is 1/35. Nice hefty size, but still a bit smaller than a 1/60 Valk.

wait, no...the gakken is smaller than a 1/60 valk? maybe the larger valks lik ean sv-51 but not the 1/60 vf-1 (that i meant but i guess dien't specify) from waht i remember. i have an old gakken somewhere at my parents place and i can't imagine it's smaller than a 1/60 vf-1

Just checked. I actually meant the VF-1, but I stand corrected. The Gakken is much bigger than a 1/60 VF-1. Fighter mode is a bit longer and it has more overall mass. I'll attribute that mistake to having kept the Legioss in Gerwalk mode as it takes up less shelf space.

Mandarake complex took care of me. they saw my photos and 3 of their toy inspection/packing employee's were very honest and agreed that the pieces were packed out of order and they didn't check for the missing piece. And they saw and agreed that's how they packed it after looking at my photos of opening the box. so they offered me 4000yen or if not, they'll think of something else to take care of me. i asked for an exchange/refund as the part is long out of print and it's a high priced collectors item i'd like complete. i promised to be a returning customer. (i also ordered more stuff from the complex store while in dialog with them :) ) they offered 6000yen for the missing piece or offered to give me a full refund and cover return shipping if i didn't want the compensation. i told them i'll ship it back and will wait for another to post on mandarake. and they were cool.

i just shipped it back to them. so i'll be able to save and get another if it shows up.

That's awesome the way Mandarake took care of the issue, still sucks that you're back on the hunt.

I sold my Robotech Scott a couple of years back, kind of wish I didn't but desperate times sometimes call for desperate measures...That said I'm not actively looking for one but IF I happen to see one before you I'll shout.

Just so it sees some light of day, here is a colorized Mospeada Illustration I worked on a few years back.

With glane21's permission, I took his original Legioss pose and turned it into a red 1Z.

Was going to add Ray's ride armour and a host of other Bits approaching. Would need some reason to finish it as it has a long way to go still . . .

I think I saw Benson offering a Robotech MPC Scott Bernard Cyclone in his for trade thread. It says he wants Yamato V2s, and since you have like 4 of everything you must have something he wants. :-)

DarrinG, if you are talking about the massive big gun there at the bottom of the package, I can send you mine. I have one that I have no intention of using. Let me know.

Cool - thx Perrych. Hang on there I O -- if this does not turn out I will work with you to get the parts . . .

Picked up a new Ikea cabinet last weekend and finally got around to arranging it today. Got to add some old stuff that I couldn't have on display before. Might add a couple of more Matchbox/Gakken things as well. I'm gonna make some sort of cool Mospeada logo/pic base to go on the bottom metal part.
