I’m sure they thought they had the next Lord of the Rings, in terms of spin-offs and merchandising that their devoted fanbase would eagerly snap up. Funny what happens when the writing tanks! When I had cable there was an hbo preview weekend that had the first season and a bunch of co workers were further along telling me I needed to see it . Watched a couple episodes and thought it was more like renaissance themed porn. My coworkers told me it gets better in the next season. Then everyone was saying the last season was crap and ruined the show entirely and that’s all they would say. Now I have hbo max and still haven’t watched it. It goes off the rails at the end, no mistake, but at least you’ll KNOW why everyone feels the way they do about it, and if you choose to see House of the Dragon, you’ll have the background you need. Lost basically taught me to simply walk away if a show stops being good....I did that with TWD....unfortunately, GoT was so good up until the final season that I felt compelled at that point to continue watching the train wreckfest... True enough. I think I enjoyed the last two seasons of GoT more than the Disney sequels. The prequels had some epic moments. All I'm saying is that GoT had a definitive end point, unlike Lost, and , like SW, the last chapters really weren't so liked as previous ones. I watched it Sunday night, I think I'll watch it again before having a full opinion. I'll say this, they spared no expense on the sets, props & costumes/clothing. Even though it's only the first episode these new characters don't pop out at you quite like in GoT yet I feel as the show goes on these characters will come into their own. I saw it with some friends on Sunday. I thought it definitely suffered from "first episode" syndrome; the first 15-20 minutes particularly were a slog. Picked up a bit as it went through. Overall, I was mixed; I found Daemon a lot more compelling than Rhaenyra. I thought it was a weird choice to cast people who looked so similar to characters in the main series (Rhaenyra obviously being very close to Daenerys, and Alicent Hightower kind of looking like an off-brand Margaery Tyrell to me). Also suffered from info-dumping a ton of proper nouns and lore while I was already struggling to understand the dialogue through the audio-mixing. It did finally push me to order a new center channel for my surround system, I guess, which I've needed to do for a while. Maybe that will help; I'm gonna see what else I can do on the equalizer front because as someone with auditory processing issues, understanding the first third of the episode was a struggle. Edited to add, it was pretty interesting that it was such a huge premiere in terms of viewers, but the conversation has been pretty non-existent it seems? A note on Princess Helaena: Spoiler In case you missed it between this episode and the last, she predicted Aemond's eye loss in the previous episode. She also had some more to say in this episode that seemed prophetic, but I need to watch again to catch everything she said.
