Question on decaling Hasegawa VF-1J Millia

Hey guys,

I'm currently building a Hasegawa VF-1J Millia type. I'm just wondering....

Is it safe to lay the white trim decals over the red paint? (such as those for the wings & forward fuselage)

What I'm worried about is whether or not the red paint color underneath will seep through the white decals.

If anyone has experience with a Millia kit, please let me know.

Thanks!

Strictly from hearsay, so take this with a grain of salt, but I remember seeing some WIPs (from loooong ago, I don't even remember where now) use the white decals and being surprised at how well they worked. If push comes to shove, you can at least use the decal as a masking guide and paint over it. It wouldn't be ideal, of course, but it is what it is.

For my part, I'd probably ignore as many of the decals as I can, the stripes at the very least. I'd give the kit an undercoat of white, then mask the stripes and maybe the UNS kite circle, then spray the red on. But that's talking hypothetically.

Ideally, I/they would create a "DYRL" Milia VF-1 scheme. Maybe the VF-1EX Mirage pattern but in red.

I'd probably do as Kajnrig says and spray the kit white and mask those areas off first and then spray your solid colour (blue or red depending on who you are modelling). The only time I wouldn't bother is the round Macross emblem (too fiddly to cut round masks then again I have done it so if you want a challenge go for it).

Unfortunately, I've already started painting the parts red.

At this point I might consider going for a black trim rather than white. It'd no longer be Millia's ship but oh well.

Thanks for the help though.  Next time I'll do it right.

According to the art you'd be at least partially correct:vf-1j-mac7-milia-fighter.gif
